When I was invited by Stevie Nicks’ guitarist, Carlos Rios, to join them on tour in St. Louis, MO as a special guest of the band, it was like a dream come true. I’ve been a big fan of Stevie’s music for such a long time, and I even had the chance to watch her in concert during 2001’s Trouble in Shangri-La tour. I arrived in hot and humid St. Louis, MO yesterday afternoon and was greeted by Carlos in the hotel lobby. After getting settled in, Carlos, Jana Anderson (Stevie’s background vocalist) and I took a tour of the city and visited the Science Center and watched an IMAX film “Sea Monsters.” The zoo was walking distance away, so we decided to pay a visit as well. We all haven’t been to the zoo in such a long time, so it was nice seeing all the different species of animals from around the world.
A storm was about to move into the St. Louis area later that night, but there was an open window of clear skies, so we decided to take Carlos’ NexStar 6 SE out into a open lot near the hotel. Carlos is such an avid amateur astronomer, he couldn’t think about going on tour without one of his Celestron telescopes on hand! After setting up the telescope and catching a fleeting glance of Saturn sinking into the West, additional members of the band, came over for a view. Nearly all of the band members never had the opportunity to look through a telescope and saw stunning views of Saturn, Jupiter, the Moon and other celestial objects. The views blew them away! The clouds started moving in with a vengeance, so we decided to call it a night. Not a bad first night of viewing, but it’s always great to share the night sky with people and show them why we like this hobby so much. The “Star Party” will continue on at addtional tour stops.
Tonight, I’ll be watching the concert backstage at Chaifetz Arena at St. Louis University. This is going to be awesome! Stay tuned.
