View Full Version : Why does Stevie lean her head to the side when posing?

In many professional photos of Stevie she leans her head toward the side. For example the Behind the Mask CD promo poster. I'd never noticed it, but someone asked me after seeing my promo posters and photos that hang in my room. I know some people prefer to be photographed on one side of their profile, but Stevie's pose is sometimes awkward. Has anyone noticed this?

Well, you know what Stevie said about having probably been beheaded in a past life. She probably just has a weak neck.

I never noticed her leaning her head to the side, except in those poses where inclining the head added dramatic effect. But come to think of it, all through the Dance tour and even later when they went on the Today show in 2003, Lindsey would do this thing to Stevie where he would nuzzle her neck and she would always kind of clinch up, when he did it. I did wonder about her neck at those times. Michele

Makes the neck look longer and helps disguise a double-chin. At least, that's why I try to do it.

If you're to believe the pop. psychology books, leaning the head to one side exposes the neck and makes you appear more vulnerable and submissive. Apparently it's a good look for women because it fosters protective feelings in men.

Make of that what you will!

Everytime I had a portrait done, the photographer always asks to have my head slightly turned "this way or that" . That's been since high school ---many cough cough years ago.

It also makes the person look slightly like they are pondering something, in a dreamy faraway kind of a way.

Thanks for all the post. It's interesting to get everyone's take on this. Sahara I think you need to get in touch with Stevie and find out her reasons for doing this.

The Onion just had an article making fun of Obama's "Looking-Off-Into-Future Pose." They said:

To complete the pose, Obama must then open his eyes at an aperture of 1.43 centimeters, tilt his chin slightly upward, and rotate his head 37 degrees to the left. His advisers stressed that he must always look to the left. 'When you look to the future, you look to the left,' Axelrod said. 'Looking to the right is an I-am-sorry-for-the-mistakes-I've-made-in-the-past-but-promise-to-work-my hardest-for-this-great-nation-from-now-on pose. It's too early for that.'

Stevie may be employing a similar strategy. A person who holds her neck up straight, no-nonsense like, is probably not inclined to have many crystal visions.

Having been in the modeling business in the late 80s and into the 90s...we all had on file our "right side". This doesn't necessarily mean your head is usually showing your right side...it's more like "best side". Anyway, I could show you some old pics...some of you may have already seen. No one's face is perfect. Not even Stevies...haha. Most shots are NOT head on unless they film/gauze/filter/layer the shot. Alot of actual "airbrushing" goes on. Digital and by hand...so the finished product even surprises yourself...and Stevie I'm sure.
