So does anyone have any more information on this show, such as:

1) Did it really happen (considering I had never heard about it until it showed up on one of the tourdates Internet sites)?

2) Was it some sort of pre-tour tryout (considering her tour itinerary starts on Monday, June 20, in Knoxville -- almost 4 weeks later)? It could not have been the actual start of the WH tour because of the 4-week lag.

3) Who was in the band (considering her US Festival band was different from her tour band)?

I don't know, I tried to find old pieces about her from May 1983, but this is all I saw. Nothing from any Las Vegas papers. This one is about the Us Festival:

DATELINE: DEVORE, Calif.

BODY:
A sellout crowd of 300,000 partying to the roar of heavy metal rock turned the US Festival into a "zoo" that left one man bludgeoned to death over a drug deal and a security guard seriously injured.

James Dean Estell, of Pomona, Calif., died Sunday at San Bernardino Community Hospital, about 12 hours after he was bludgeoned in a parking lot at Glen Helen Regional Park, San Bernardino County Sheriff Floyd Tidwell said.

"He was struck in the back of the head with a pipe or tire iron, we believe over a narcotics deal that burned out," Tidwell said.

Sheriff's Capt. Philip Schuyler said a young security guard, whose name was not released, was hospitalized "in quite serious condition" apparently after being beaten by some of his fellow guards early today.

San Bernardino police, who were investigating the incident, said they could not immediately release any details.

Steve Wozniak, the Apple computer designer who reportedly put $16 million into the festival, hoped to attract 200,000 people daily, but said Sunday he feared long lines at concessions, toilets and other facilities.

"I'm worried, I don't like it," he said.

Thousands of the revelers, who paid up to $25 for each day of the festival, stayed overnight at the park. David Bowie, Stevie Nicks and The Pretenders were to perform today.

Estell, 23, apparently was beaten in a dispute as he was selling the hallucinogen PCP, or "Angel Dust," Tidwell said.

David Michael Planton, 22, also known as David Morgan, was booked for investigation of murder and held without bail at the county jail, Tidwell said. Authorities said Planton lives in Orange County.

A 17-year-old girl who was with Planton also was held at Juvenile Hall for investigation of murder. Her name wasn't released because of her age.

The arrests came shortly after the 3:30 a.m. beating, based on information from witnesses, Tidwell said. The violence wasn't surprising, he said, given the size of the crowd and numerous drug transactions.

"You could have a thousand cops in there and you couldn't control the narcotics," he said.

Tidwell said his deputies were concentrating their patrols outside the 54-acre amphitheater about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, which was covered by a sea of humanity.

He said the crowd was "an absolute zoo to us and it drives us up a wall," but added, "There could be riots and there haven't been. The mood is very good."

The concert bill, including Van Halen, Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne, drew a crowd that was overwhelmingly teen-age and male. Many came bare-chested.

Packed like sardines in front of the stage, several passed out after hours in the hot sun and were carried off by friends and medics.

Band after flamboyant band mounted the stage and filled the open-air bowl with sounds driven by 400,000 watts of booming guitars.

The Scorpions drew a huge roar for launching their twilight show by hiring five jets that flew overhead with a vapor trail and what sounded like a sonic boom. The crowd cheered even louder for an elaborate laser light display to the sound of Wagnerian-style orchestra music.

Vince Neil, of Motley Crue, a popular Los Angeles group, said the record turnout proved "heavy metal is not a cult following."

Authorities reported 89 arrests since Thursday. Most came Saturday when the three-day rockfest began with a New Wave program that drew 165,000, according to festival organizers, and 140,000 according to Tidwell.

Deputies made 22 arrests Sunday and 55 percent of the weekend total were for such offenses as assaults, drug sales and conspiracy to counterfeit tickets.

By today, 1,599 people had sought medical attention at eight first-aid centers and a field hospital, compared with 2,642 people last year. But medical coordinator Dean Grose said only 12 people required hospitalization out of 54 major injury cases, including fractures, drug overdoses and heat exposure, with "less than half a dozen" resulting from acts of violence.

Getting there was the biggest problem for most festival-goers. Until midafternoon Sunday, traffic was bumper-to-bumper on local roads and jammed on nearby freeways.

Wozniak, 31, predicted he'll lose $3 million to $5 million on the festival, which continues Saturday with a country music program.

The first US Festival last Labor Day weekend drew about 200,000 on its most crowded day. Wozniak lost a reported $5 million or more.

He said Sunday he doesn't plan a third festival without "outside input." He didn't elaborate, but most observers believe he meant other investors.

I'm questioning this "show" at the Aladdin on this date. Stevie & her troupe made no mention of any "kickoff" show in Las Vegas that entire year, & nothing in the newspapers ever surfaced.

So who has an original copy of the Billboard Boxscore tidbit? Did someone play a joke? This "gig" was never on anyone's trade lists in the 1980s.

The Penguin needs an ASK JIMMY (Iovine) feature!

He's probably the only one with enough brain cells left to answer such questions.

True ^^^^^^^^^^^Although someone apparently dug up some Pollstar data on it.

Very mysterious & very confusing, just like Stevie Nicks in those yrs.

At least we can justifiably say that it was not the kickoff date of the tour. Kickoff dates don't take place 4 weeks before the rest of the tour. Maybe it was a dress rehearsal with tickets sold to the public. But you'd expect to see something in the Vegas papers at that time.

But could it have been a "rehearsal" for the Us Concert, similar to the way she did a warm up show for Soundstage just a little while ago?

But could it have been a "rehearsal" for the Us Concert, similar to the way she did a warm up show for Soundstage just a little while ago?Well, perhaps. I'm willing to entertain the thought. But I was at the US festivals (on both final days only), & there was precious little I saw or heard that needed rehearsing -- by any band on the roster. It wasn't the sort of thing that bands would have worried about practicing for, to be blunt (whereas Soundstage was an important filming for posterity). It was nothing but a big, hot, sweaty, crowded party -- & that was just the people on the stage. I have often wondered who pulled that particular group of players together for Stevie for May, & whether the tour band formation had already taken place or took place simultaneously (or afterward). Why, for example, did Benmont not play with Stevie at the US Fest? Did he play with Little Steven earlier that day? How come Glaub got the US Fest gig & not the tour gig? Same with Kunkel: Why didn't he do the tour?

If we had info on the band at this supposed Vegas show, we might have a unified field theory of Stevie's tour world in 1983.

The reason I chose to cover this Tour like I'm doing with the Tusk Tour
is because I do have a bunch of original copies from Billboard Boxscore. In those days I was an avid reader of Billboard Magazine. I learned a lot from that magazine.
I was always under the impression that the Us Festival was her first night of the Tour until I saw the May 27th entry when I recently pulled out the photo album of this memorabilia. So no, this is no joke. It's real.

I used to collect old TV Guides too. I had a bunch from the 1960's at one point but during the 1980's I cut them all up and added those pictures and TV listings to my 1970's photo album collections of TV shows and movies. In the last two weeks I have been looking at them. Those and my Fleetwood memorbalia as well, hence the Billboard Boxscores.

DATELINE: SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., April 25, 1983

BODY:
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., April 25 /PRN/ -- Stevie Nicks,
one of the headliners May 30 at the "US '83" Festival, is now in a
Hollywood recording studio working on her new album and promises to
release a single from it before her guest-starring performance,
according to Unuson, sponsor of the festival.

The "US '83" festival will be held at the Glen Helen Regional
Park in Devore, May 28-30 and June 4.

Ms. Nicks, a longtime member of the superstar group Fleetwood
Mac, will be the only headlining performer to return from last
year's first "US" festival, where Fleetwood Mac gave one of
the standout performances, say the organizers.

Her solo appearance at the "US '83" Festival marks a new phase
in her career. It was only with the release of her first
solo album, "Bella Donna," in 1981, that she began performing
as a solo superstar as well as with the group.

Both the name of the new Nicks single and that of her album
are being kept top secret. Although releasing schedules in
the record industry are notoriously imprecise, Unuson says that
present plans call for the release of the single around
May 7, and for release of the album on the last Friday in May --
just before her May 30 appearance.

Her first solo album was a long time in the making, but as
Nicks says: "It took me a great deal of time and soul searching
to go out on my own; and even though I usually write three or
four songs for each Fleetwood Mac album, I'm not the most prolific
writer in the world.

"I don't write like anybody else. I can't just sit downn
and write a song on the spur of the moment. Mine are more like
running commentaries on my life./NOTE -- Tickets for the "US '83" Festival are available nationwide. For information, call 800-222-0533. In Southern

HEADLINE: Bowie's act worthy of $1.5 million tab U2 and Stevie Nicks make breakthroughs at the US Festival

BYLINE: LIAM LACEY; GAM

DATELINE: SAN BERNARDINO, CA

BODY:

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Until Monday, the US Festival was missing a
vital element - great performances. Except for the huge crowds and The
Clash's performance on Saturday, there was nothing to give the audience
the sense of being witness to something extraordinary. But on Monday, the
Festival's third day, there were three outstanding performances - from the
Irish group U2, from former Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks, and above
all, from David Bowie.

Traditionally, festivals have the ability to break new bands to a mass
audience, and for the US Festival, U2 was the new band that broke through.
The power of the Irish band's performance was largely a matter of lead
singer Bono's unusually beautiful voice, perhaps as clear and pitch-
perfect a male voice as exists in rock music. The stark clarity of the
music, from the mournful, liquid sounds by a guitarist known as The Edge,
to the propulsive bass and drums combination, was beautifully conveyed
through the Festival's sound system.

Bono made a point on stage of saying that songs such as Sunday Bloody
Sunday (about Belfast's infamous Bloody Sunday) were "not political,"
deliberately dissociating himself from The Clash's confrontation approach.

After the performance, Adam Clayton, the 23-year-old bassist for the
group, said the band was "pleased" by the enthusiastic response of the
crowd. "We've been making some inroads here now. This tour, we feel we're
coming to America as victors, and it feels a lot better."
The Clash, he said, "made fools of themselves. If you sign up for
$500,000 to play a date, you can't suddenly pretend you meant something
else."
The band has made a point of continuing to live in Dublin, outside the
rock music mainstream. "I imagine we're the last band Ireland will see in
a long time," Clayton said. "The kids in inner Dublin are living in a
ghetto. We've tried to do benefits and things to help them out, but they
don't really know who we are. If a kid is worrying about where to get a
slice of bread, he isn't thinking about electric guitars."

Nothing could have been more remote from U2's earnest concerns than the
second-last act of the day, Stevie Nicks. David Bowie, making his first
tour of North America since the mid-seventies, was the main draw, and it
looked as if Miss Nicks might have a hard time winning over the audience.
But she had a couple of things on her side: the California setting and
audience were ideally suited to the moody, melodic standards - Rhiannon,
Say That You Love Me, and Over My Head. Miss Nicks' band, which included E
Street Band pianist Roy Bittan, was superb.

Perhaps most important was Miss Nicks' striking good looks, and she was
the first performer of the Festival who benefited incalculably from the
huge video screens on each side of the stage. Miss Nicks, dressed in a
low-cut, black lace evening dress, had most of her audience in an erotic
reverie, but to her credit, she managed to maintain an intense aura of
vulnerability under the scrutiny of 100,000 pairs of eyes. The warmth was
obviously genuine, and Miss Nicks was the first performer of the Festival
to actually touch hands with the audience over the barrier.

By the end of her act she was almost emotionally overcome. "If you ever
think you don't matter," she told the audience, "I want you all to know
that you're the only thing that matters to me." And the audience watched
the video screen in respectful awe as tears began rolling down her cheeks.

By the end of her set, it was obvious the onus had shifted to David
Bowie to try to win the audience back. But the moment rock's Thin White
Duke sauntered out on stage, with a wan smile to the audience, the game
was up. As he has done so often in his career, Bowie gave a performance
that rewrote all the rules for rock music, and The Woz, The Clash, and
even Stevie Nicks - tears, black lace and all - receded into irrelevance.

Since Stevie's background vocals on OMH are out of the ball park, she actually should put this song into her solo act. Have Sharon somewhere in the shadows singing lead and then Stevie would just come in on the ethereal chorus.

One of the things I love about SYLM is the way that it's phrased "say that you love me" in the song. It somehow emphasizes the fact that the guy is just lying to her and using her. And the title itself could be a plea: say you love me. It's really got the same message as Little Lies. I love that.

I love Think About Me and the way she and Lindsey approach the vocals from two different angles, Christine asking, Lindsey demanding.

How can it be syrup, when there's such doubt and trouble underneath the top layer?

You should provide additional information for each of these gigs. For example, the Meadowlands show had an orchestra for "Beauty & the Beast," did it not? Who was in the orchestra? Where are they now? How was the plan for string support accomplished? Also, you should list the people in Stevie's band each show. You need to track this sort of stuff down, dude. :wavey: :]

SECTION: Style; Records; B8
HEADLINE: Pop: Open & Closed Cases

BYLINE: By Boo Browning

BODY:
Both Stevie Nicks (who performs at the Capital Centre tonight) and Rickie Lee Jones approach their music with a fervency uncommon in mainstream pop. Nicks' songs evoke a mystical, deeply romantic world that is inviting but ultimately inaccessible to the listener, while Jones opens up her interpretations in such an intensely intimate manner that the audience feels immediately privy to the experiences she describes.

Nicks, like Jones, shares a frankness and vulnerability made popular by Barbra Streisand, Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell, but she lacks the vocal skills and songwriting ability to elevate her expressiveness above sheer pop drama. Her second solo album, "The Wild Heart" (Modern 90084-1), is animated but far from eloquent.

Part of the problem is her persistence in playing the quasi-mythological Welsh witch that defined and limited her participation with Fleetwood Mac. In a typical Nicks song, images from the occult are slung together willy-nilly with romantic fantasies to create billowy but incomprehensible themes. Hers is a style that lends itself better to a visual context than to vinyl, and her studio albums seem only to draw attention to her narrow vocals and formulaic compositions.

The most embarrassing example of Nicks' actressy pretensions occurs in "Nightbird," in which she laments the state of her eye makeup and summer footwear while lamely attempting to cast herself as a metaphor for mysterious love. "Beauty and the Beast" is a better attempt, anchored on a real story; a softly swaying waltz, it's also the album's best cut musically.

Elsewhere she rambles, especially on the title track, which contains some four-plus minutes of chorus repetition. Dedicated to a friend who died, it's a pretty, rocking song with some catchy phrases and good melodic hooks, but Nicks gets carried away in her expansiveness of emotion and overstates the tune.

On "Wild Heart," Nicks' voice is in its best form since early Fleetwood Mac--less thin and raspy, more rocking and self-assured. Determined to remain a solo artist, she is nonetheless at her most beguiling in the company of other vocalists, as past collaborations with Kenny Loggins, Tom Petty and others have shown. Her duet with Petty on her debut album, "Bella Donna," proved a durable, engaging rock hit.

Perhaps in an effort to repeat that success, the two perform another Petty-penned piece here, "I Will Run to You." Unfortunately, Petty sounds cranky and unmotivated on this one, as if it represented more an obligation than an opportunity. The guitar phrases are stale leftovers from his "Damn the Torpedoes" album, and the lyrics rival Nicks' own for inane sentimentality.

Nicks continues to be one of the most passionate female vocalists in rock music. What she has yet to acquire is the ability to strike a more universal balance between fantasy and reality, to invite her audience to some common ground where they might share the source of that passion.

Rickie Lee Jones' most recent release, a seven-song EP titled "Girl at Her Volcano" (Warner Bros. 1-23805), demonstrates her considerable skill at exacting emotional involvement from her audience. In addition, this album, which contains only one self-penned composition, shows Jones getting as much emotional mileage from other artists' material as she has previously gotten from her own. Her range and technical ability are as awe-inspiring as ever, but here they become formidable tools that she uses to manipulate texture and tone from one moment to the next.

On the two live tracks, "Lush Life" and "My Funny Valentine," the audience responds by hanging onto every nuance, cheering or even shouting replies at a phrase here, breathlessly silent within a pause there. Particularly on "Lush Life," Jones uses their enthusiasm to draw them even deeper into her interpretation, thus weaving her audience into the context of the song.

Jones has a knack for making the most familiar standard emphatically her own. Leaping from a tristful whisper to a chill-raising shout, she breathes a jazzy new anguish into the 1966 Left Banke hit, "Walk Away Renee." And on "Under the Boardwalk," she weaves through the male voices of the chorus with such spontaneity and verve that the old Drifters favorite is transformed into a tapestry of youthful joy.

Of course, Jones' highly stylized approach has its perils, chief among them the risk of overindulgence. On "Rainbow Sleeves," a Tom Waits tune released earlier this year on the "King of Comedy" soundtrack, she slips from heartfelt nostalgia into a weepy childlike pose that does justice neither to her womanly soprano nor to the intent of the lyrics, which concern renewed strength through companionship. Yet even "Rainbow Sleeves" has its thrilling moments, as does her own "Hey, Bub," a ballad sketch that captures the whimsy and tenderness of a remembered friendship.

Jones has taken great pains to assert that "Girl at Her Volcano" is not the "next" Rickie Lee Jones album, but merely a sampling of favorites she has enjoyed performing in her scattering of club dates over the past few years. Still, it will do just fine to hold over those who've come to regard her as the most impressive pop vocalist since the young Streisand.

Thanks for everyone's post and thoughts in this thread also. I didn't start collecting Stevie/Fmac til '88/'89 so I missed everything before this.....I wish someone knew about her show at Joe Louis Arena for the Wild Heart tour.....no soundboards or audience tapes for it either....same for her RAL show which I think that was at Pine Knob/now DTE in '86 too. If anyone has info or went to those shows....heck we might as well add the Mirror show in '89 since I couldn't go to that one either.....I'd love to hear about it.....Thanks much:thumbsup::shrug:

Just a quick add to the 5th show on this tour. The Meadowlands show. This was my first Stevie show, and as I graduated from the 8th grade that June, my parents bought me front row tickets for this show. Diana Ross and Prince were also at this show. I also saw Nina Blackwood, old school VJ on MTV back in the day.

No, I am usually not transcribing them. I'm cutting them from an electronic news service and pasting them here.

Also, although I didn't do it this time, because the article fit into Mark's theme, I usually do a Yahoo search and see if the article is already online on one of the FM websites before I paste it here. I want the stuff we haven't seen before online, but not a repeat of all the stuff we already have. Since so many periodicals are gradually digitalizing their archives, we get more old news articles available all the time.

BODY:
Stevie Nicks, the homecoming queen of old-school rock, made last night's Capital Centre concert worth every penny of the hefty ticket price.

Nicks missed cues, suffered feedback problems and miscalled a few tunes, none of which seemed to matter in a performance as richly textured and multilayered as her trademark witch-princess threads and ringleted hair. The exuberance reached such a peak that in the middle of one song she reached for a pigtailed child in the audience and danced around with her.

With backing instrumentalists from the E Street Band, the Heartbreakers, Billy Joel's group and perennial studio ace Waddy Wachtel, all she had to do was open her mouth and spread her wings, and the audience took flight along with her. From Fleetwood Mac favorites such as "Crystal Visions" and "Sarah" through "If Anyone Falls," from her new album, "Wild Heart," she showed control of voice that equals her balletic motions pirouette for pirouette. Surely an act to be appreciated visually as much as musically, Nicks gave her audience gratifying amounts from both categories.

Walsh opened the show with some especially deft Ravel licks. Shouting, "Eat your heart out, Mozart," he took it breathlessly from there, pausing only long enough to announce his renewed presidential candidacy. Corporate rock it may have been, but after such a spectacular double bill, capitalism never looked or sounded so appealing.

REVIEW MUSIC THE YIN AND YANG OF STEVIE NICKS STEVIE NICKS - IN CONCERT WITH JOE WALSH AT THE WORCESTER CENTRUM, WEDNESDAY.

Susan Wilson Special to The Globe

WORCESTER Understanding the ancient Chinese principle of yin and yang, the universal opposites, provides a clue to a question that has haunted Fleetwood Mac fans for years: Just what is it that makes that mystical and mysterious Stevie Nicks tick?

The talented singer and songwriter - who packed the Centrum Wednesday night in a wonderfully successful solo concert - has admitted her see-saw sensibilities and dual personalities in recent interviews. There is the yin half - passive, light, idle, "feminine." Then the yang - active, dark, dominant, "masculine." Nicks is aware, and in tune, with both these sides of her muse. And with that in mind, the cryptic Nicks image begins to coalesce.

Visually, the yin-yang pull is manifested in outfits like the breezy, white gown she wears on the cover of her 1981 debut solo album, "Bella Donna." The contrast? A dark, velvety cloak - augmented by some double exposure photography - on her newly released "Wild Heart" LP (both on Modern Records). Conceptually, she flaunts it in lyrics that skip from solidly stated love songs to elusively worded, ethereal jaunts into her private Never-Never Land. Spiritually, she admits an affinity for fairy tales like "Beauty and the Beast."

You get the idea.

Balance, of course, is the essence of effective dualism. And balance was the key to Nicks' emotionally moving and exceptionally hard-rocking performance on Wednesday night.

Wafting on to a stage bathed in eerie blue light, the strikingly beautiful vocalist took firm hold front and center, a spot she rarely relinquished in the course of her 90-minute show. The fact that Nicks' active, take-charge side was visible, and that she made regular eye and gesture contact with audience members was compelling and rivetting. It was a far cry from days when her preoccupied personna lay rampant, as in the 1979 Garden appearance which found Nicks fluttering around the stage, wandering and wilting like a lost Isadora Duncan.

Shaking out her golden, lioness locks, then shifting a white shawl over her lacy, black, Gothic-gaudy gown, Nicks and band dived headlong into a rocking opener of her snakey "Gold Dust Woman." Once in control, the sensual and self-assured vocalist never let up. Her voice was strong and soaring, continually expanding and experimenting around the songs' original melody lines. She periodically dipped out to switch outfits - sometimes black, sometimes white, and always wispy and witch-like.

Highlights of her harder-rocking originals included Mac classics "Dreams," "Gypsy" and a poignant, raw-edged re-interpretation of "Rhiannon" that provided a chilling encore. Ace guitarist Waddy Wachtell - accompanied by other top-notch session players including keyboardist Roy Bittan, percussionist Bobbye Hall and drummer Liberty DeVitto - bouyed Nicks' wood- grained vocals from the start. But beginning with two "Bella Donna" hit singles, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and "Edge of Seventeen," Wachtell in particular broke loose into the evening's finest, funkiest and most majestic pyrotechnics.

Faster paced numbers from the "Wild Heart" LP fared better in live performance than in their largely lackluster album versions. In fact, only one cut off the new LP - a melodic and melancholy mood piece called "Beauty and the Beast"(!) - had the strength and breathless charm of earlier Nicks ballads like "Sara" and "Leather and Lace."

The unlikely opening act for Nicks' magical evening was former James Gang lead guitarist, Joe Walsh. Backed by a soulful horn line and hard-driving percussion section, Walsh mixed lush harmonies with his trademark heavy driving boogie. Walsh's reputation as an innovative musical artist were proven via his searing guitar work in "Everybody Must Get Stoned" and a bluesy, guitar-vocal duet in "Shadows." Though Walsh's appeal was clearly to a tougher, heavier metal crowd than Nicks' softer rock following, the combination seemed to work, at least in the energies and excitement generated.

ECCENTRIC NICKS GIVES DELICATE CONCERT

Ken Tucker, Inquirer Popular Music Critic

Stevie Nicks , who performed at the Spectrum last night, is a very unusual pop artist: an intensely mannered and eccentric performer whose mannerisms and eccentricity yield good music.

Nicks usually performs as part of the band Fleetwood Mac, but she has just released her second solo album, "The Wild Heart" (Modern), and her show last night concentrated on material from that new disc.

For this tour as a headliner, she has assembled a first-rate band consisting of players from other groups, including keyboardist Roy Bittan, from Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band; Benmont Tench, keyboardist from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, and drummer Liberty DeVitto, the best thing that ever happened to Billy Joel. Together with lead guitarist Waddy Wachtel, this band played a lot of harsh, loud rock 'n' roll that was a nice contrast to Nicks' reedy, delicate voice.

Nicks' entire style of performance can, in fact, be described as delicate. In her wispy gowns and in the fluttery, flyaway dance steps she executes onstage, Nicks plays up the dreamy aspects of her music. The songs she writes are full of wise, young witches, bold princes and glowering monsters - this is fairy-tale rock 'n' roll, delivered with roiling melodrama.

What keeps it all from becoming too coy, however, is Nicks' penchant for creating firm, commanding melodies that bolster her woozy lyrics. At the Spectrum, she gave bright, unsentimental readings of hits such as "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "Leather and Lace" and the current "Stand Back." In the end, Nicks skittered along the lip of the stage, accepting bouquets and squeezing the hands of gawking admirers, and as always, her apparent sincerity and guilelessness was impressive.

Preceding Nicks this evening was singer-guitarist Joe Walsh, whose billing on this tour is bigger than an opening act but smaller than co-headliner.

Walsh is a man in the midst of change: His old group, the Eagles, has disbanded, and so he's testing his solo wings by touring to promote his new album "You Bought It, You Name It" (Full Moon/Warner Bros.). This record is a desultory affair that doesn't begin to hint at the tough-guy good humor and sharp guitar-playing of which Walsh is capable.

Walsh's performance last night was charming but slight, with one exception - a terrific, extended version of his finest composition, "Life's Been Good," probably the most honest, and certainly the funniest, life-of-a-rock -star saga any musician has recorded.

What was the reason for the cancellation?

I don't know, I can't find anything saying why the shows did not go forward.

I don't know, I can't find anything saying why the shows did not go forward. That's very weird. In my tour itinerary, the Toronto gig was originally scheduled for July 19, & the bookend shows (July 18 at Rosemont & July 22 at Blossom) took place as planned.

There were several switcheroos & other scheduling mysteries throughout the tour. The Greensboro NC show at the Greensboro Coliseum was originally scheduled for July 10, but was postponed to the tail end of the tour, in late November. The Tempe AZ Heart Association benefit was originally scheduled for August 28, but that was pushed back to September 25, & she allegedly played Baton Rouge on the 28th. Some gigs in the third week in October were apparently postponed a month.

Originally, the tour was supposed to end November 20 in Ames, but that gig (which took place as scheduled & is on tape) wound up preceding some postponements tacked on afterward.

That's not correct. I was at the Greensboro NC show--and it was held in the summer. The COLUMBIA, SC show was cancelled (the afternoon of the show as a matter of fact) and then rescheduled for late November, I had tickets for the show and got to Columbia only to find out that it had been cancelled. It was then rescheduled for late November, at the tail end of her tour (and I was there for the rescheduled show.) The story given at the time was that Stevie was suffering from bronchitis or some similar ailment. Urban Legend has it that she actually stayed in Columbia for a couple of weeks, recuperating at the city's nicest hotel at the time, a Marriot if I remember correctly.

So what we have is that Greensboro NC took place as scheduled on July 10. But Columbia SC (University of South Carolina) was postponed from October 21 to November 24.

Did you go to the Charlotte NC performance on November 23? I think that's on tape (either that one or Columbia the following night).

Hard to beleive it's been 25 yrs since then. That's a long time ago. I was getting totally psyched up for Stevie Nicks on her Wild Heart Tour! Don't blame it on me, blame it on my young, wild heart! :woohoo: I bought the gray t with that slogan on it and the heart with wings on the front. STEVIE NICKS SEES WORLD IN A BLUR

Walter Berry Associated Press

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- For singer Stevie Nicks, her success as a songwriter could be attributed to her failing eyesight.

I definitely perceive the world differently than most people do," said the most visible member of the rock group Fleetwood Mac, who was in Phoenix to promote a coming benefit concert and her second solo album, The Wild Heart.

I have really bad eyes, and I never wore glasses, you see," Nicks explained. Then all of a sudden, I got contact lenses -- soft ones which don't make you see great but make you see better. Now I'm completely confused. I used to see nothing. Now I see sort of.

Everything is either a blur or it's psychedelic or more acidlike. Street
lights sparkle, colors run together. But because I can't see the world clearly, I look at it differently. I see it like in a dream."

Most of her songs reflect a reverielike quality, as in Gypsy," Sara," Rhiannon" or Dreams." And whether they're for a Fleetwood Mac album or her own, all her efforts sell well -- in the millions.

Her first solo LP, Bella Donna, was released in October 1981 and rose to the top of the pop charts. A 35-city tour through August coincides with The Wild Heart. The Modern Records album was No. 5 and climbing on the best-selling chart of July 30. Her single, Stand Back," was No. 13 and climbing on that date.

The Wild Heart is wild," Nicks said. It's Bella Donna, only less fragile.

It's me being stronger with who I am and what I have to say. I just sang what I wanted to and did it the way I wanted to, as crazy as it was. It's my masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. It's very much a story."

An avid reader, Nicks based another of her new songs on author Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast.

It ends the album. It's an orchestrated piece -- a string arrangement -and it's a beautiful, beautiful thing," she said. It was at A&R Studios in New York City, where they do all the Dionne Warwick and Frank Sinatra things.

Neither Fleetwood Mac nor Stevie had ever used a string arrangement in their lives. So it was very strange to walk in to sing for these 30 little old men with their violin cases who had no idea what in the world I was doing there in a long black dress, with champagne.

These guys hadn't done a session like that in 10 years. But for two hours they played this song, and it's just beautiful. It's very fairy tale."

Tom Petty and Prince also contribute to The Wild Heart, but Nicks says she'll shy away from such collaborations in the future.

It causes me a lot of grief to work with men who love to come in and sing on my albums because it's cool," she said, referring to Petty and ex-Eagles drummer Don Henley, who sang backup on the Bella Donna hits Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and Leather and Lace," respectively.

I'll be out on the road, and everybody will be saying, O'Where's Tom Petty?' and O'Where's Don Henley?' It causes me a lot of arguments, and it gets to the point where I just want to do my own record and not hassle anyone."

A WEIRD YEAR FOR ROCK STARS ON THE ROAD

Ken Tucker, Inquirer Popular Music Critic

Although the overall quality and diversity of pop music these days are a cause for rejoicing, the reports of a resurgence in the music business have been rather premature in one area: So far, 1983 has proved to be an uneven year for the rock-concert business.

David Bowie, the Police and Willie Nelson sell out concert halls all over the country. But equally big names, such as Linda Ronstadt, Rick Springfield and the Australian sensation Men at Work, have had difficulty in filling concert arenas in some major cities, including Philadelphia.

"Apparently what is disturbing concert-promoters across the country is that everything is so unpredictable," says Paul Grein, the music research editor at Billboard magazine, the music-industry trade publication.

"One platinum-selling act will sell out 50,000 tickets in a matter of hours; the next act with a major hit single will have trouble selling a third as many tickets. There doesn't seem to be any way to predict which acts will succeed in drawing a big audience anymore."

Here in Philadelphia, Greg Benedetti of East Coast Concerts agrees with Billboard's assessment.

"It is much more difficult to gauge the public's current interest in bands that were in the past automatically considered sellout attractions," notes Benedetti. "Despite the news from Washington that the economy is on the upswing, we're finding that the poor economy - specifically kids without much spending money for shows - is still affecting our business."

No pattern emerges when you look at examples of big winners and losers in concert halls in Philadelphia and elsewhere in the country. East Coast Concerts reported a very poor showing for its July 3 Atlantic City Pier show with British rocker Dave Edmunds. Rick Springfield was riding high on the record charts with his hit single "Human Touch" when he filled less than half the seats at the Spectrum in July. And the Ripley Music Hall had a dismal turnout in May for Mutabaruka, the most widely praised reggae artist in recent years.

Similarly, the current "Budweiser Superfest" concert series - featuring a revolving lineup of such big-name acts as the O'Jays, George Clinton, Kool and the Gang and the Whispers - has had very uneven audience attendance as it travels around the country, making its Philadelphia arrival next Saturday a commercial enterprise to watch.

A rock legend like Eric Clapton failed to fill the Spectrum to capacity in February, but ZZ Top, considered a "regional" band with its strongest appeal in the Southwest, sold out the facility in July. (Depending on where the stage is placed in the Spectrum, seating capacity ranges from 16,000 to 18,500.)

Throughout the country, the drawing power of pop acts continues to seesaw. Marvin Gaye sells out seven nights at Radio City Music Hall, but watches his audiences dwindle as his tour moves into the Southwest, and the combination of two stars, Stevie Nicks and Joe Walsh, on one nationwide tour produces only sporadic sellouts. Yet supposedly offbeat acts like Talking Heads and Neil Young find themselves playing to capacity crowds.

One thing suggested by this situation is that the music business is in a process of radical change. The most popular trend of the 1970s, for example, was the pop audience's fondness for introspective singer-songwriters - performers such as Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell. Nowadays, in the midst of up-and-coming trends such as "new music" (rock music influenced by black dance music), such acts find their power as a draw to be inconsistent to the point of sometimes being seriously strained.

For instance Browne, whose "Lawyers in Love" album is currently in Billboard's Top 20, sold out New York's Madison Square Garden a month ago but only managed to fill about half of Pittsburgh's 12,000-seat Civic Arena. Then he rebounded on Aug. 3 to do standing-room-only business at the Spectrum.

On the other hand, a band like the Police, which only a few years ago was labeled a "punk-new wave" act of limited commercial appeal, is now the hottest rock group in the world. The British trio's recent appearance at New York's Shea Stadium sold out - 60,000 seats - in an astonishing five hours. And their SRO performance with Joan Jett, R.E.M. and Madness at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium on Aug. 18 grossed $1.15 million, according to Variety statistics.

In general, there is an increasing acceptance among music fans for the sort of rock 'n' roll that until very recently seemed too eccentric to attract huge numbers of people.

A prime example of this occurred locally last Wednesday when the British band Culture Club filled Upper Darby's Tower Theater to capacity. Culture Club, fronted by the odd, androgynous-looking singer Boy George, is exactly the sort of rock act that industry experts used to dismiss as a cult act.

Meanwhile, Billboard reports that a veteran band like the hard-rock Aerosmith - once a supergroup that could easily sell out a large arena - has been having trouble filling seats throughout the country. The band recently sold only a third of the capacity of the San Diego Sports Arena, for example.

And current supergroup Asia, despite a Top 10 album titled "Alpha," earned only slightly more than half of the Spectrum's potential gross when it played that facility Aug. 27, according to Variety figures.

"The acts themselves are becoming more conservative about all of this," observes East Coast's Benedetti. He points to the example of Eddy Grant, the pop-reggae star whose recent hit was "Electric Avenue." Grant was scheduled to appear at the 1,000-seat Tower Theater last month but, Benedetti says, "ticket sales were slow."

"We at East Coast Concerts were willing to take a chance on the fact that he'd get a lot of last-minute ticket sales, but his people (Grant's booking agency, record company and management) decided they didn't want to do that. So, complying with their wishes, we moved the show to the Ripley Music Hall," the South Street nightclub that holds 440 people for a seated concert and 550 for a dance concert.

It would be a mistake to depict the summer concert situation as another indication of pop music's imminent collapse, of course. For one thing, record sales are up for the last year. For another, the popularity of "video" - the short promotional films showing pop stars in action - continues on both cable and commercial television. But Billboard's Grein thinks that the popularity of videos may be cutting into live-concert business.

"Increasing numbers of kids are undoubtedly thinking, 'Why pay to see a band perform when you can watch them in the comfort of your home for free or for the comparatively small price of a cable-TV subscription?' " he theorizes.

On a local level, Benedetti observes that "there is no major outlet for new-wave acts, a place for new acts from all over the country to come in and show Philadelphia what they've got.

"The radio stations here in town don't do enough to expose the new music that could in turn help the concert business in town, for us and for a place like the East Side Club. WIFI (a local FM station that recently switched from a "new-music" to an urban contemporary format) helped satisfy a need for us in that respect. Our key to success is breaking new acts, and they were playing a lot of adventurous music. But since their format change, there's been no one to take up that slack.

"No one has taken the time or the patience to educate that young audience out there, to let them know that there is exciting music being made that they're not hearing. And if they don't hear it, they won't pay money to go and see it."

I believe this was the only show on this tour that Joe Walsh was NOT the opening act.
A friend of mine went to this show. She told me Stevie threw a pineapple, which was a stage prop, at a drunk guy in the front row who was yelling sexual sh** at her while she was performing. My friend was drunk too, so who really knows. No one else seems to have heard about this. I can't imagine it being true.

Ok, yes, I just googled it and it was broadcast live December 10th.

I was at this show. This was my third Wild Heart concert that I attended and the best of the three I saw. I originally found out about these two shows in a Connecticut newspaper I picked up in August. Without that paper I never would have known about these shows. Three tickets were purchased for me, my brother and my friend Adam. My brother was the one who got me into Stevie's music in the first place. He really didn't want to drive that far because it was a work night for him. He agreed to drive us if I agreed to drive us home so he would be able to sleep. He had a little Toyota and one of the rear windows was broken. I was very skinny then and the wind coming into the car from the highway made me freeze to death. It was a three hour drive from our home to NYC.
(Years later another friend of mine drove us to NYC from here to there in 90 minutes, but that's another story altogether)
Anyway I remember when we got there we lucked out in finding a parking spot just one block from the theatre. We got out and strolled around outside the David Letterman Studios and took pictures of ourselves with the Radio City sign behind us.
We had smoked a ton of weed on the trip there.
Earlier in this story when I was talking about my bro wanting me to drive us home, I forgot to mention that his only condition on me was that I stay awake so he could get to work ontime the next morning. I agreed it would be no problem even tho I knew deep inside of me I was only saying what he wanted to hear. I know me and I knew I was gonna be exhausted from all the partying we were gonna be doing.
Once inside the theatre we were very impressed with its beauty. The walls were red, the ceilings were high and a long staircase with red carpet brought guests up to the balcony seating. I saw Stevie's friend Injun leaning up against the wall in the lobby but was too intimidated to approach him.
We went to our seats which were like row 26 or something and when the lights went down and Stevie emerged we went nuts. The whole audience went nuts. We barely sat down at all. I remember us screaming at the top of our lungs in our admiration for this woman and her music. In those days smoking was allowed indoors so we had no problem lighting our cigarettes and our joints. We nearly fainted when her suprise guest came out. Mr. Tom Petty, who joined her onstage to sing I Will Run To You and Stop Draggin'.
When the show was over we walked back to the car and I bought a large B/W pic of Stevie from a street vendor. We were all exhausted and my bro reminded me of my promise to stay awake and drive us home. Somewhere along that drive I couldn't take it anymore. The two of them were fast asleep and I was ready to crash as I was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tired, so I pulled over at some rest stop and slept for three hours. My brother didn't figure it out until we got back to town. That's when I woke him up and he was pissed cause he was gonna be late for work. But when it comes to seeing Stevie guys, you gotta do what you gotta do. You know what I mean?
Years later when I got a bootleg tape of this show and listened to it, I wasn't all that impressed with her singing. But while we were there it was so exciting and we were so in love, we didn't even notice it was just a so/so show.

[Wish I had been there to hear Stevie sing Over My Head]

Globe and Mail (Canada) June 1, 1983

Nothing could have been more remote from U2's earnest concerns than the
second-last act of the day, Stevie Nicks. David Bowie, making his first
tour of North America since the mid-seventies, was the main draw, and it
looked as if Miss Nicks might have a hard time winning over the audience.

But she had a couple of things on her side: the California setting and
audience were ideally suited to the moody, melodic standards - Rhiannon,
Say That You Love Me, and Over My Head. Miss Nicks' band, which included E
Street Band pianist Roy Bittan, was superb.

Maybe I don't have the whole show, I don't know but the DVD I have of her US Festival performance does not have Say You Love Me or Over My Head. I doubt she would do Chris's material in her solo show.

Perhaps most important was Miss Nicks' striking good looks, and she was
the first performer of the Festival who benefited incalculably from the
huge video screens on each side of the stage.

That's a sexist comment. I guess her actual songs/voice have nothing to do with her appeal. That's not to say that Stevie isn't "strikingly good looking, she is but that's not all.

An erotic reverie? lol. She has always had a genuine love and appreciation of her fans.

She was so cute and having so much fun. Great show.

[Sorry, I missed this for June]

Philadelphia Inquirer (PA), June 28, 1983

Section: FEATURES PEOPLE HOME ENTERTAINMENT

I was at this show, my second concert ever, the first was FM the year before. I still have all my ticket stubs. My girlfriend's dad drove us to Philly and went to a bar while we were at the show. The show was awesome but I had already been seduced by Stevie the year before when she did "Sisters of the Moon" so anything she did after that was ok by me. I can say that her hold on me hasn't waned much since then either. lol.

They actually are but they were released to the public as Wild Heart shots. I did this on purpose to make a point. And that point is, even then(1983) Stevie would use older photos of herself as if they had been taken recently. These hit the magazines in 1983 & 1984 and most people seeing them and reading the articles they accompanied would've thought the photos were current.

This was the 1st time I saw Stevie. What a great place to see a show - right on the ocean. The wind was blowing and Stevie came in on a helicopter. It was magical. I don't know about the pineapple as I too was quite drunk and sitting on a blanket pretty far back. There was some commotion at some point coming from the stage and some crowd activity, but a pineapple? Why ever would there be a pineapple on stage? lol. Maybe, who knows? I'll ask a friend who was there with me if she remembers.

Actually this was the first time I saw Stevie live as a solo act as her San Diego show in 1981 was cancelled ..Great show ..she was so wild and energetic it really was the end of an era to me for Stevie ..that last tour before the coke and partying really started to take away much more than they gave. The pics on this one are Bella Donna era BTW.

Maybe a fan brought it to give to her in hopes it was weird enough that she'd remember him or her.

I can see her going across the edge of the stage, mentally tabulating the stuff people hand to her, "Snoopy. Snoopy. Unicorn. Snoopy. Flower. Flower. Snoopy. Pineapple. Snoop - wait, what?"

Or maybe Stevie just enjoys a refreshing tropical fruit break between songs - when she's back there forever changing clothes, she's also snarfing a pineapple. :blob1:

That's when they were taken, but they weren't used in any magazine articles from 1981. So at the time in 1983 or 1984 when one was reading the latest, greatest Stevie article, THESE were the photos used to accompany the articles as MODERN DAY pics of our Goddess. I will show more examples of this later. Isn't it neat to have someone like me who can remember back that far?
There is the possibility that some of these photos appeared in 1981 or 1982 publications. But none that I was aware of. I was very on top of the situation back then, in my collecting everything available on Stevie/Mac.

At some of the outdoor concerts Stevie has performed at over the years, either she or the promoter makes sure there are decorations on the stage to create ambiance. In the photos from Stevie's 1981 Compton Terrace Concert I can see several Palm tree plants on the stage. Perhaps that day at Colt Park Amph. in Rhode Island the stage had props to make it look like a tropical island.Afterall it was an outdoor show right next to the ocean. It probably had fake Palm trees with fake Coconuts. I'm sure the guy didn't get hurt. Stevie was prolly trying to make a point.

Probably, but my fake explanations are more fun.

I would like to see Stevie huck a pineapple at someone even if it was a fake pineapple. She'd be like Axl Rose, only with fruit. And then Waddy could take a page from his friend Keith Richards' book and whack a fan with his guitar. Good times, good times.

Yeah I kind of was as well .Plus in spite of all the booze comsumed by myself in the 1980s I still have a great memory.the photos first appeared in a Creem magazine article in late 1981 I cut one out and carried it in my wallet then.

I was 21 years old and I was at this show. After viewing the Stevie HBO Concert a thousand and one times I was excited for a whole new show with this Tour. You know how dissapointed we get with her current set list? Well this was my initiation to the basic same ole same ole with the setlist. It was the same basic HBO show with three new songs added in. But being there that night felt magical. It was my 4th time seeing Stevie. The 1st time was for Tusk and the other two were Mirage shows.

I attended this show, and it was awesome! After the show, while walking back to the car, Stevie's limo passed us in the parking lot, and she was standing up in the limo w/ her head outside of the sunroof, like in the movie, "Big". The limo stopped right in front of me & my Mom, and I blew her a kiss, saying I Love U Stevie, she winked, blew me one back, and said I Love U too! We then ran to the car, and got behind the limo and followed them on the freeway (until they figured out we were following, and they losy us)....Took a while to get out of the parking lot as well, all the cars stopped, and was honking their horns at her while she waved....she cause quite a ruckus in the parking lot......great memory, something she'd never do later in yrs.

I saw a very early-in-the-tour'Wild Heart' show, when Stevie played solo at The US Festival in '83. It was magical. I've written about it many times, I'm sure at least once here, but it was life-changing for me. The first ever live performance of 'Stand Back', she said. Amazing energy, in really fine voice, and she for sure had a good buzz going, not to any detriment at all. Awesome version of 'Angel'- which I'd never heard live before, and everything she did that night seemed spontaneous, fresh, and from the heart. I loved when she had a wine glass in her hand and got back to the mic late during 'Stop Draggin' and how she yanked on Waddy's hair, and sang that song with the most fire I've ever heard her put into it. A killer 'How Still My Love'--- I have tons and tons of great memories of the show, and have had it for years on vhs then dvd and still watch it, remembering how sweltering hot it had been all day long, with planes flying over the grounds spraying water on the crowds to avoid anyone dying of the heat, and then how bitterly cold it became when night fell and we were all jumping up and down and hugging strangers to stay warm. Stevie was the next to final act- Mr. Bowie closed the show. He was great. Stevie was greater.
It was my first time seeing U2 who performed in the afternoon and I knew I was witnessing a band about to become huge- Bono was amazingly, amazingly, good. Lots of great music, The Pretenders were excellent that same day, and it still makes me proud of her that Stevie was the greatest performer of all at that extraordinary event that was The US Festival 1983.

But she had a couple of things on her side: the California setting and
audience were ideally suited to the moody, melodic standards - Rhiannon,
Say That You Love Me, and Over My Head. Miss Nicks' band, which included E
Street Band pianist Roy Bittan, was superb.

Roy Bittan? For some reason I remember it being Billy Payne.

Ok...I know I'm several pages late for this post, but, I live in Indiana, and Market Square Arena, unfortunatley, was demolished in 2001. Many great performances took place there (even Elvis Presley's last concert, I hear), but, as in most situations, a newer model took over...Th Conseco Field House...I know, not near as cool as Market Square Arena!!!

The photo was taken somewhere along the tour. Not this night. Maybe the US Festival? IMO Sanne is the expert on when a photo was actually taken. This looks like the cape she wore while singing Outside The Rain.

I was at this show, at the Hollywood Sportatorium actually - it used to be so far out west and undeveloped out there - it was practically in the Everglades. Stevie arrived and left in a helicopter! It was a little two lane road out there and I'm assuming she didn't want to have to wait in the traffic jam like the rest of us! Blame it on her wild heart.

The photo was taken somewhere along the tour. Not this night. Maybe the US Festival? IMO Sanne is the expert on when a photo was actually taken. This looks like the cape she wore while singing Outside The Rain. This definetly looks like Us Festival...if you ask me.....even her hair was very flat that night from the wind.

Yeah this was one of the first posters I bought back when I became a fan in 1983...this along with the close up of Stand Back video pic and the Magenta Maroon Mirage one...but yeah this was taken in 81 and the magenta one was an 82 pic...but 83 and 84 was when they were all out in the stores and popular.

Better than the best, I consider Sanne the world's master of identifiying what year a picture of Stevie Nicks was taken.
Here's a bunch of pic of Stevie and friends from this century.Sanne will tell me if I'm wrong.

Those pics all look like this century cept maybe the 2nd one...I usually go by the looks of Stevie's hair... Lol! Those bangs look a little puffy kind of like "Dance era" bangs...not 100%...but that's what they look like to me.

Also, yes that was rude of your mom to show you the ad and then say you couldn't go. Could be Mirage...you're right...looks like the black thing round her neck which was a Stevie staple during Mirage and I can see another mic right next to her which probably was Lindsey's...the hair? Looks like the hair could be either tour...the black top? Maybe Mirage? I don't remember this this little black coat!:(

Invaluable information, many thanks for compiling the stats here...

This was my very first Stevie concert, I was also 21...drove 3 hrs each way, didn't care that I had nosebleed seats. I had been a fan since I first heard Rhiannon on the radio back in '76 and I always wanted to see the Mac (never seemed to have a chance for one reason or another). So, I was clearly 'on board' for this magical night. I do remember her singing 'Happy Birthday' that evening and the person who sat next to me was kind enough to allow me to use their binoculars throughout the evening. I picked up the grey sleeveless tee and program which I gazed at for months afterward. I was completely entranced and began wearing my hair up and dressed as Stevie-ish as possible everywhere I went! Unfortunately, I hit a deer on the way home - coming around the bay...it was so dark and it literally jumped out in front of me...scared me to death! Luckily I made home alright with one headlight...Since I was driving my father-in-laws' Ford pickup he was not too happy with me the next day...Seems like a hundred years ago...

Hooray for Madison! If only I'd lived here in 1983! I feel like I should go and light a candle and the Coliseum (now the Alliant Energy Center) in honor of Stevie's presence here 26 years ago. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it was a great turnout that night.

Well Mark, another show that we were both at, but did not meet yet. with CRS and all, I do remember being insanely excited about being there-I slept out on the streets of New Haven in front of Cutler's record store in the heart of Yale University-I ended up with nose bleed tix-My nosebleed luck lasted until 1998. Glad to have really met you Mark! It only took like 28 years!

I was there too, and 14 years old. I used to live in Wallingford too. It was a fantastic show, and she was so energetic, and I loved the painted screen backdrop. I also remember how I thought all the older girls that went to the show looked so beautiful and bohemian in their skirts and dresses and flowy hair. And many of the fans brought roses and stuffed animals then. It was so dreamy and I didn't want it to ever end. Funny how the next tour had a harder edge to it.

STEVIE NICKS' NEWEST ALBUM IS FILLED WITH ROMANTIC SPIRIT
Ken Tucker Knight-Ridder News Service

Knight-Ridder News Service

Stevie Nicks inhabits a world of sprites, gnomes, fairies and handsome princes. The songs she writes and sings all seem to be set in an evergreen glade where unicorns peep around trees and rainbows shade the sky.

To say that Nicks is a romantic is putting it mildly. She's the Swinburne of rock, and her music is laden with the thick, melodramatic beauty that effective romanticism can convey.

Her detractors think she's a flake, while many of her admirers seem to worship the platform boots she teeters upon. Nicks inspires strong feelings, which is one sure indication that she's not a fake or a sham.

As one-fifth of the superstar group Fleetwood Mac, Nicks has often had her engaging spaciness held in check by the verve and pop-song discipline of the rest of the band. Anyone who has attended a Fleetwood Mac performance knows that Nicks is both essential to this group and totally disconnected from it.

Her cool, reedy voice complements the hot, dense guitar-and-drum sound of the band perfectly, but it often seems as if the band's tales of difficult love affairs fly over Nicks' head. In the midst of Fleetwood Mac's realism, she twirls around the stage in wispy dresses and pulls at a stray lock of hair, listening to the voices in her head.

Two years ago Nicks released a solo album, Bella Donna, that surprised many people both for its resolute levelheadedness and its spectacular commercial success. Bella Donna sold millions of records and contained one of the strongest, angriest pop songs in years, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," a
duet with rocker Tom Petty.

Now comes Nicks' long-awaited second album, The Wild Heart (Modern), and it's a very pleasurable, if more problematic, piece of work. Working again with producer Jimmy Iovine, Nicks has fashioned a dense, lustrous sound that is an apt metaphor for her lyrics. Sandy Stewart on synthesizer and Roy Bittan, pianist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, provide Nicks with icy sheets of keyboards that drench the music in the kind of splashy emotion the singer revels in.

By contrast, however, old-pro Los Angeles guitarists Waddy Wachtel and Toto's Steve Lukather play terse, ringing melody lines that prevent the songs
from becoming unduly sentimental. This tension between keyboards and guitars gives The Wild Heart the sort of stormy, crackling background that suits Nicks' tales of dark romance -the musical equivalent of the misty, moody atmospherics of Wuthering Heights.

A recent review of The Wild Heart in Rolling Stone magazine condemned the album for the incoherence of its lyrics, but that's silly. The whole point of Nicks' act is that she has become completely addled by love, left gibbering about how her wild heart has been broken beyond repair.

To look for clear-eyed lucidity in her lyrics is as foolish as hoping to find feminist polemic in the words of Ozzy Ozbourne's songs. It's much more rewarding to listen to Nicks' songs without pondering the lyric sheet that accompanies the album. That way, odd fragments of phrases float up out of the musical ether, and you are left free to appreciate her voice, which can sound hoarse and plaintive one moment, ethereal and commanding the next.

If the best songs on The Wild Heart are the tough-sounding ones -- the snappish hit single Stand Back" and her duet with Tom Petty, I Will Run to You" -- the album also builds to a logically grandiose climax, Beauty and the Beast," a seven-minute epic dedicated to the surreal Jean Cocteau film classic of the same name.

Backed by a 22-piece string section and featuring her most delirious vocals, Beauty and the Beast" is a triumph of campy pop in its woozy, excessive, decadent fun.

Anyone who can plan an album as cagily as Nicks has overseen The Wild Heart isn't the flibbertigibbet she likes to seem; she's crazy like a fox.

Stevie Nicked

Stevie Nicks, the wispy sprite of Fleetwood Mac, will make her solo concert debut at the Spectrum Monday, backed up by a stellar cast of L.A. studio musicians and sharing the bill with Joe Walsh.

With her haunting, crystal visions of gypsies and white witches, and her ''seduced and abandoned'' sagas of disllusioned love, Nicks surely has pumped lots of life into the Big Mac, lo these past eight years. And her growly voice and hypnotic, jazz-flavored incantations surely have sparked adult rock to grow in sophistication.

I've been entranced by Nicks' sound and look (the best nose in rock) ever since stumbling upon her largely ignored debut album with (future ex-husband) Lindsey Buckingham, ''Buckingham Nicks.'' One of my proudest picks-to-click as a weekend disc jockey was a song called ''Rhiannon,'' which became Nicks' first hit for Fleetwood Mac six months after I introduced it on the Philly airwaves.

And yet, in the same breath, I must confess a growing disillusionment with Nicks' numbing sameness. Her perpetual fascination with her own reflection is her biggest shortcoming. Introspection does fit her self-image as a white witch and translates into some useful stage theatrics: Check out the shadowy lighting effects and the tracks of her tears that involuntarily pour forth during Stevie's readings of ''Sara,'' ''Dreams'' and ''Edge of Seventeen.''

But a little confessional melodrama goes a long way. Isn't there a world outside her own to explore? Moreover, Nicks' self-absorption inadvertently causes a very serious problem in communication. She has absolutely horrendous, mushmouthed pronunciation that makes her lyrics impossible to grasp in totality. And from what I've seen, the woman is such an emotional prima donna, that no one close to her dares point out the flaws.

The May 27, 1983 Wild Heart Tour Show at the Aladdin Theater in Las Vegas did happen. I attended this show on my 12th birthday as a gift from my cousin. I was visiting my family who lived in Las Vegas at the time. I'm assuming that it must have been some kind of "warm up" show for The US Festival which would take place a few days later.
It was a fantastic show, basically the same set as the US FEST. At one point in the set, someone tried to jump onstage to hug Stevie. A security guard pulled the crazed fan back, which resulted in a mini scuffle. After the song, Stevie scolded the security guard and told the audience that if anyone tried to mess with them to tell them to "F**K off". She stated sometime to the effect that she was on stage for the fans.....etc.....
I couldn't believe my eyes, as I had never heard Stevie use curse words before. Then again, I was only 12.

Spectacular audio quality. Such a shame it always seems to be the weaker nights for Stevie that surface with spectacular audio. Imagine if that year's Dallas or Los Angeles concert showed up on ConcertVault.

Yes, it's the Wolfgang Vault show. When I first got it, i wrote them asking what happened to Edge of Seventeen and Rhiannon tracks from that show and they said something about poor tape quality...blah, blah, blah.

However, I read somewhere that someone jumped on stage and knocked her down either during Edge or Rhiannon and she simply stopped the show that they ruined the moment. Just hoping for more details here.
