Excerpt from a Menomena interview

NUVO: If you could play some romantic songs what would they be?

Seim: I wish I would have done research. Okay, two love jams that we're going to cover, huh? Well I just was told about this Fleetwood Mac re-release and it's one of my favorite albums of all-time. So I've been reading a lot about the recording of that. So how about two Fleetwood Mac songs? How about 'Dreams?' If we could play or sing or do what they did, I probably should do 'Dreams,' then. I guess 'Second Hand News' is about laying down in the tall grass and letting me do my stuff. That's kind of molesty, actually. We'll just pick any two random Fleetwood Mac songs and I'm sure they're probably about love. I'll just make sure to do as much cocaine as possible to replicate the era in which they were played.

Queen voted top band to spend 15 minutes with

Queen have been voted the top band the UK would most want to spend 15 minutes with.

The 'We Are The Champions' rockers topped a survey conducted by Virgin Media, who announced the launch of their new channel Vintage TV, after receiving a majority of votes from the British public.

Richard Wheeler, head of content acquisition at Virgin Media, said: "Queen still proves the show must go on as the UK continues to enjoy some of the best songs from the last century on Vintage TV."

Shortly behind the music legends - fronted by the late Freddie Mercury - comes David Bowie, who recently released his first album in a decade, 'The Next Day'.

The top five is completed by soul sensation Stevie Wonder, whose hits include 'Superstitious' and 'Isn't She Lovely', 'Little Lies' musicians Fleetwood Mac and British rockers Oasis.

Vintage TV will show a range of original music programmes and concert footage, as well as full-length interview features, 'rockumentaries' and music news bulletins.

Virgin Media's top ten bands Brits would most like to spend 15 minutes with are: 1. Queen 2. David Bowie 3. Stevie Wonder 4. Fleetwood Mac 5. Oasis 6. Bryan Adams 7. ELO 8. Joy Division 9. Don Mclean 10. The Undertones

A four-game winning streak and five-game points streak evaporated quicker than the thick haze in the mezzanine at Saturday's Fleetwood Mac show. The 4-1 loss killed any momentum the Flyers had gathered over their near-miraculous march through the schedule with a roster full of names we barely recognize.

Falmouth reporter's Notebook: Thinking about tomorrow

The concert was meant to be a diversion. When I ordered Fleetwood Mac tickets last December, I never could have imagined the climate in Boston during the third week of April.

The city was attempting to return to normality on Thursday the 18th, three days after the Marathon bombings, so I left my safe haven of Cape Cod, tentatively crossing the Bourne Bridge. Outside the TD Garden, SWAT team officers were positioned along the streets, and I got a tiny glimpse into wartime life in Belfast or Baghdad. “We know how strong you are,” Stevie Nicks told the audience. “You are Boston Strong and you will make it.”

After the show, my sister, Courtney and my friend, Mary and I decided to take a cab back to my family’s house in West Newton and as we climbed in, a line of police cars sped by. At the house, I learned of the shooting at MIT and wondered if they had been en route. I went to bed thinking about officer Sean Collier and woke up early the next morning to the sound of sirens. I was baffled by the text from my husband. “Lock the doors. You can’t leave the house. One suspect dead, the other on the run. Could be in your area.” Unable to head back to the Cape, I spent Friday watching coverage with Courtney, my brother, Seton, and his girlfriend, Megan, as fire trucks and ambulances whizzed down Auburndale Avenue and Blackhawk helicopters circled above.

Later, when the shelter in place order was lifted, the reporter in me wanted to write a story, thinking maybe that was the reason I got stuck there, so we headed over to Watertown. On Arsenal Street, people were seeking respite from the lockdown, grabbing pizza at Domino’s, walking their dogs, and chatting with strangers, as familiar faces from television news paced around with cameramen in tow. Heads were bent over cell phones, fingers scrolling for the latest updates. The police officer directing traffic was controlled but polite to the confused drivers attempting to continue down the road. “I’m sad and angry and I just want to know why,” said Jenilee Haber of Watertown.

Darkness fell and an MBTA bus sped down the road beyond the barricade with what appeared to be passengers but was packed with police. Soon after, we heard the crackle of gunshots coming from the standoff about a mile away and later, a second round. For some reason, I was more frightened by the barking of police dogs breaking the ensuing silence as a cruiser transported them to the scene. Finally, a ripple of applause slowly floated down the road with building intensity as the news broke and the crowd began to cheer.

The next morning, I headed into the city and the T was packed with families in Red Sox gear on their way to a Saturday afternoon game. A man got on at Lechmere carrying his dog, Ava, a whippet/Chihuahua cross, who was wagging her tail excitedly, and I swarmed in asking to pet her. “She loves riding the T,” he said and passengers nearby laughed. On the Boston Common, people were enjoying a typical day, eating pretzels on park benches, watching the swan boats glide by. Dogwoods were in bloom under a brilliant blue sky. “I can feel the collective relief of the whole city today,” said Kimberly Thorpe of Dorchester.

At the Public Garden, tiny signs were placed in the grass and the most prominent read, “We are all affected by violence, no matter who we are or where we are from, we stand together for PEACE.” It was then that I finally broke down. A few blocks over at the corner of Boylston and Berkeley, the city sounds ceased as a crowd gathered in front of the memorial, leaving flowers and notes, running shoes and candles, sports memorabilia and stuffed animals. The brightly colored display was contrasted by the vast gray expanse of a deserted Boylston beyond the police barrier. There were audible sobs and parents attempting to offer explanation. “The little boy who was at the Marathon loved the Bruins, so that’s why someone left that shirt for him,” a father said delicately to his inquisitive son.

Therapy dogs and their handlers were out in numbers, as people of all ages bent to greet them. Helen and Tom Davis of Therapy Dogs International had arrived earlier that morning with their two Golden Retrievers, Liberty and Independence. “Our job is to hold a leash. They provide the relief,” Tom Davis said. “With a dog, there is no judgment. They just offer unconditional love. They don’t care about race or religion, whether you’re rich or poor,” Helen Davis said. “Right now, the adults need the comfort just as much as children do.”

Bailey Marcus, a senior at Northeastern University from Newark, N.J., was still feeling the effects of the chaos on campus during the lockdown. “No other city could have come together like that,” she said. “It was eerie but amazing.” I approached three police officers, not authorized to comment, so instead I simply offered my gratitude and inquired about their well-being. “We’re changing shifts soon so we’ll be able to get some sleep,” one officer said and smiled warmly. I smiled back through tears. On the way to pick up my car at the Woodland T station, the train was now filled with slightly dejected Bruins fans but the characteristically uncommunicative passengers were still friendly and engaged. “How did they do today?” someone yelled from one end. “Terrible,” the man next to me responded in that lovably inimitable accent. “A lotta penalty minutes.”

I have relied on rays of light in this time of darkness –stories of selflessness and bravery, such as that of Falmouth’s own Andrew Daley, who along with his friend, used a belt and quick thinking to save a woman’s arm. I was buoyed by the news that officer Richard Donohue, seriously injured in the Watertown shooting, is expected to make a full recovery. I am in awe of our hospitals, first responders and law enforcement. And along with the rest of Boston, I was touched by the public outpouring of support from our various sports rivals. I mourn for Martin Richard, Lu Lingzi, Krystle Campbell and Sean Collier, who lost their lives. I mourn for those who lost their limbs, their innocence and their sense of safety.

In the days ahead, I will continue to take comfort in Mick Fleetwood’s reminder to the crowd in Boston. “Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow.”

In the days ahead, I will continue to take comfort in Mick Fleetwood’s reminder to the crowd in Boston. “Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow.”

I just love how music really can bring people together, and help us heal. What a powerful force it is. Got extremely choked up when they played "Don't Stop,'' in Boston. I think that's what people needed to hear - tomorrow will soon be here. I feel like the band was pretty sincere about the words they were singing, .. and you could feel it during the show!

With plans for a debut album set for later this year, their first EP set for June 10, and a free show at The Yardbird late next week, Evil Alien are certainly a band that have been keeping themselves busy. And it’s not just their music that’s occupying their time. “I’ve said it a few times; we’re a bit like Fleetwood Mac with all of the line up changes – but without the love interest, or hair do’s!”

[article about Baby Boomers clinging to their old music, references FM]

April 29, 2013 in Features

Boomers haven’t strayed from music that helped define generation

Rick BoninoThe Spokesman-Review
http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2013/apr/29/familiar-refrains/

Almost 40 years ago, in one of its biggest hits, Fleetwood Mac sang: “Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow. … Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone.”

Today, fans of the band – which hasn’t released any new music in the past decade – are still happily looking backward.

Tickets for the June 29 show at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena are selling much faster than when the ’70s supergroup last came to town in 2004, said Matt Gibson, the arena’s general manager.

“It’s going to be sold out,” Gibson said. “Part of it is, you don’t know if this band is going to be back, ever.”

While its creators creep past retirement age, the music the baby boom generation grew up with keeps on trucking.

Northern Quest Casino is scheduled to announce its outdoor summer concert lineup this week, and it’s likely to be loaded with boomer favorites. Last year, the majority of the casino’s shows featured boomer acts, including Ringo Starr, Earth Wind & Fire and John Fogerty.

“I worked with guys who listened to Boston every day on their boombox,” said KPBX-FM radio host John Johnson. “This was 2005, and they were still listening to the first Boston album (from 1976) every day.”

Don Adair, program director for KREM-FM in the 1970s, and a former Spokesman-Review music writer, said: “The refrain I hear is, ‘They don’t make music like they used to.’ Maybe they don’t, but that doesn’t mean it’s not just as good.”

Having a special attachment to the music of one’s youth is nothing new, said Johnson, whose “Johnson’s Improbable History of Pop” is in its 19th year.

“My parents were like that with their Sinatra, their big band music, stuff that I thought was pretty square at the time,” said Johnson, 61.

When you’re young, he said, “A lot of important things happen. You might get your first girlfriend, take your first sip or two.

“It might be the music you listened to at your prom. It might be what you went out and listened to with your buddies who didn’t go to the prom.”

But as people get older and become busy with careers and families, “they may only be listening to music in their car on their way to and from work. They don’t have friends over to listen to music and hang out.”

The events of the boomers’ formative years were particularly intense, said Adair, 66. Those years included the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King Jr., the war in Vietnam, the free speech movement.

“There was a lot for this generation to rally around,” he said. “We took ourselves pretty seriously from a pretty early age.”

The arena’s Gibson, 41, said: “Music means something to every age group. But with the baby boomers, it really seems like it was a soundtrack to that generation, not just entertainment.”

And there’s certainly something to be said for the quality of the music that came out of that time, said Bob Gallagher, owner of Spokane’s 4000 Holes record store.

“You can be snobbish about the ’60s,” said Gallagher, 61. “The music got so much more sophisticated, so much more serious.”

Young people today continue to pick up on older sounds, he said: “To see a 17-year-old buying an Aerosmith album isn’t that unusual.”

But you’re less likely to see the reverse when it comes to boomers and more recent artists.

“Some of my friends got into Talking Heads and Elvis Costello,” said Adair. “Some of them were into The Clash. But it was really hard to get anyone my age to listen to Nirvana.”

The rise of hip-hop was “a real dividing line,” said Johnson. “That was as different as hearing electric guitars must have been to my parents.”

And it can be hard for older listeners to relate to younger musicians’ messages, he said. “You’re not so much rebelling against society when you’re trying to decide whether to take your early Social Security.”

Hearing aids

Theoretically, the Internet should make it easier for baby boomers to find new music if they’re so inclined.

“It’s a big listening station out there,” said Gallagher. He used to be the one to tell his customers about up-and-coming artists. These days, it’s the other way around.

And with downloads, he said, “People are listening to music who never would have in the past. If you have to get up and go to the store to buy it, some people just don’t do that.”

But with the vast sea of information to navigate online, it helps to have some idea what you’re looking for – particularly for a generation more attuned to radio, where the demise of progressive, album-oriented stations like the old KREM-FM has made it more difficult to find anything beyond the hits.

“It’s kind of hard to know where to hear new music these days,” said Johnson. “Young people have all these mixes of different styles on their iPods, and that’s great. I wish I could hear their music as well as they can hear mine, but it takes me more work.”

Some websites have stepped forward to fill the gap. At Valslist.com, founder Val Haller provides picks and playlists that promise to “introduce you to music that is a new twist on your old classics.”

In 2011, AARP Internet Radio ( www.aarp.org/music) launched with the tagline, “If you have a hard time finding music you love, or you miss the days when radio turned you on to great new sounds — we’ve got a radio player for you.”

Two original channels that focused on contemporary tunes – Fresh Sounds and Modern Hits – have since been discontinued, though newer music continues to be mixed into the Modern Rock and Coffeehouse selections.

Even boomers who bring themselves to listen to current artists aren’t necessarily comfortable going to see them perform live.

“People my age say, ‘I don’t want to be the only old person there,’ ” said Adair, who still goes to concerts by younger bands. “Why not? It’s about the music, it’s not about age or fashion.”

While he was once told to “get out of the way, Grandpa,” for the most part, he said, “Kids have been unfailingly polite.”

Diana “Dyno” Wahl, executive director of the Festival at Sandpoint, is among the youngest boomers at age 50. Intrigued by the acts at the annual Sasquatch Festival at The Gorge Amphitheatre, she asked her 19-year-old son whether she would like it.

“He said, ‘Oh, Mom, I don’t think that’s for you.’ ”

One of the reasons? “You’re camping out for five days and you maybe get a shower,” Wahl said.

The Sandpoint festival will announce its lineup May 16 for the Aug. 1-11 concerts. It books a mixture of boomer-era acts, like last year’s Kenny Loggins (“I saw people everywhere from five years younger than me to 10 years older who were singing every word,” Wahl said), and current artists that lean to the more approachable.

“If we are going to do something younger, we want it to be something that won’t chase our older patrons away,” Wahl said.

She cites Michael Franti, who blends hip-hop with genres ranging from funk to folk, as a “perfect example” – a hit not only with her son but with her 81-year-old mother, who proclaimed, “What an entertainer!”

It doesn’t hurt that typically eclectic Sandpoint supports a progressive, independent station, KPND-FM. Wahl remembers talking to her booking committee about bringing in a newer artist whose name they didn’t recognize: “I started humming a few bars, and they said, ‘Oh, I’ve heard that on the radio.’ ”

Changing tunes

Back at the Spokane Arena, Gibson, whose job involves constantly thinking about tomorrow, doesn’t see too many Fleetwood Macs in his future. The trend is more toward multiple-act shows, and smaller venues, like the arena’s self-contained Star Theatre.

With so much music to choose from, audiences are more fragmented these days, Gibson said. The availability of live performances on YouTube and television has stripped some of the mystique from the concert experience. And in the download age, it’s more about individual songs than albums.

“There are a lot of one-hit wonders out there, but not a lot of artists who have collections of music that people want to hear,” he said.

Boomers, Gibson said, “felt something very real about their music. It wasn’t quite so packaged as it is today. For that to go away, it’s kind of a sad thing.”

Why “Games Without Frontiers” was the perfect theme for the finale.

By June Thomas|Posted Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at 11:00 PM

One season in, The Americans’ visual signature is the crosscut montage set to a classic '80s soundtrack. In the pilot, an epic chase scene was propelled by Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk”; Episode 10 had the beautifully choreographed “To Love Somebody” shootout; and we head into the hiatus breathless from “Games Without Frontiers.”

Johnny Marr Discusses his New Album, The Messenger
Home Is Where You Plug In May 06, 2013

I hear you ran into Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood while trying to get into a Fleetwood Mac show without paying when you were about 15. Is that true?

[Laughs] That's true.

A mutual friend from northern England suggested that I throw that question out to you, by the way.

I never would have thought I'd be asked that question. Well, there's very many cool things about that situation. First off, me and my friends used to go to every concert in town. I don't think there was ever one that we didn't actually get into, even if it took us three or four attempts, because I don't remember ever being unsuccessful in getting in. Sometimes, having seen a band and their first few numbers, I realized I probably shouldn't have busted in so much. I'm thinking of when me and my friends got to see Uriah Heep; I had no [idea] that was a band.

What was interesting about that for me was that we used to hang out in a youth club and it had a really cool jukebox. There was a couple of Fleetwood Mac records on there, "Green Manalishi" and "Albatross" or something. When I heard that this band Fleetwood Mac were coming to town I assumed that it was a bunch of very old guys with long hair and beards. So when we were hanging around the stage door, ready to sneak through, this big old Bentley pulls up and out gets these two utterly beautiful, blonde '70s rock girls on either side of Mick Fleetwood. Yeah, I was 15 and I was three feet away from Stevie Nicks in 1977 or whenever it was, so that worked for me on a lot of levels. But Mick Fleetwood recognized me from having walked by. He gave me a nod and a smile, as if to say, "Yeah. This is as cool as you think it is, son." I already was pretty committed to the life of a musician but that definitely helped to swing things, I can tell you. I remember thinking, "That looks like a good job, John boy."

And I bumped into Mick Fleetwood in 2005 and I told him this story, and he was kind of knocked out by it. I didn't hold it against him that he didn't remember me. I let that one go, but hey, what can I say? It was a great concert. I saw them on the Rumours tour, and that was amazing that I got in there before the show started because usually I had to wait for the band to come on. I saw the band's opening song and off they went. It was quite evident that it wasn't a bunch of fat old guys with beards. It was an amazing, exotic California band playing these really great tunes, so that was a really good night. And it's nice to remember that. It's funny.

And if you happen to be ready to walk onstage and notice a really tall, older fellow lingering around backstage at your show, maybe you can have a similar moment.

I should be so lucky. Hey, hope springs eternal, man!

Rolling Stones face pay cut as poor sales force them to slash US ticket prices
The rock giants are taking desperate measures to ensure full houses for their anniversary US gigs

Edward Helmore in New York
The Observer, Saturday 4 May 2013 08.46 EDT

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/may/04/rolling-stones-face-pay-cut-ticket-prices-slashed?INTCMP=ILCNETTXT3487

The Stones playing a surprise gig in Los Angeles last month: they had been demanding $20m for five shows on tour in America. Photograph: Luis Soto/AP
Could it be the tour too far for the Rolling Stones? Insiders are even speculating that the band will have to renegotiate the huge guaranteed fees for their American tour, which opened on Friday, as ticket prices are radically reduced in light of poor sales. A perfect storm of management hubris, fan indifference and technology change is threatening to turn the tour into a disaster.

Last week the band said it was dropping the price of thousands of premium seats – "flexing" in industry parlance – rather than play to half-empty arenas. The situation was so dire, one insider revealed, that the band's own allotment of tickets was released because of a lack of requests.

"Total disaster. Too expensive and no vibe on the shows … it's a terrible way to go out," a source said. He added that the band could hardly refuse if their reputed $20m fees for the tour were revised. "What's the band gonna do? Say we're not going to play if you touch our gross?"

In the UK, by contrast, tickets for the groups's two Hyde Park shows, priced from £95-£300, quickly sold out, although £750-plus hotel package tickets remain. The , and they are also headlining the Glastonbury festival.

Although there was widespread grumbling about ticket prices after the Stones played in London and New York last year, it is since this tour reached the US west coast and heartlands such as Chicago that outright hostility has emerged towards the band and its promoter, the giant AEG Entertainment.

"I have to give them respect for what they have done, but now they seem like an embarrassment," fan Cameron Bowman told the San Francisco Chronicle recently. "Seriously, how much more money do they need? I feel like they are in Donald Trump or Gordon Gekko territory – just money for money's sake."

By setting prices at $170 (£110) for a cheap seat, $635 for a top seat or up to $2,000 for a VIP ticket, the band alienated blue-collar fans who have kept their tours profitable through the decades. Their 2005 tour grossed £350m.

This year is a different story. The Stones are playing in arenas holding from 10,000 to 15,000 people, not stadiums. In theory that should be more profitable – if fans will pay more for a closer view.

But the plan has backfired. The band has no new material to tour behind and its new management has allowed ticket prices, not the show, to become the story. By contrast, bands such as Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty are selling out, but their tickets are a fraction of the price.

Playing in only a few cities – Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto, Boston and Philadelphia – means it is less expensive to tour. But that plan relies on hardcore fans willing to travel – and they may not want to sit in an upper tier that's within their budget but is farther from the stage. So they are sitting out the tour.

"They did everything backwards," said one tour veteran. "It was a last-minute decision to celebrate their 50th anniversary. A bit more thought should have gone into it because now they are up against all this summer competition."

The Stones have a history of pushing the boundaries of ticket prices; they were one of the first bands to adopt multi-tiered pricing. But now legitimate secondary ticket sellers such as StubHub.com allow artists to see exactly what people are willing to pay to see their show.

The escalation in prices is partly testing the top of the market and partly an effort to squeeze touts out of the business. But touts may be a necessary evil. They took the risk in buying tickets for resale and priced that into their business. Now the Stones are taking on that risk, they also take the chance of getting burned.

"Price does matter," said Gary Bongiovanni, editor of the concert industry publication Pollstar. "The market is speaking."

I suppose the tickets aren't really that expensive, when you consider face value. It's only if you pay extra to try to get a front seat that it feels like a fortune.

Right. And I think I read the cheap seats at the Stones are something like $175, I think the cheapest at FM was around $60 with fees wasn't it? Theoretically, you could get front row FM for $175. I know it wasn't really possible everywhere, but I did pull up front row for Kansas City at face value.

Tell Me Lies: A Republican Songbook

Tell me lies,
Tell me sweet little lies

...goes the refrain from Fleetwood Mac's elegiac love anthem, "Little Lies," never envisioning it would someday become the default anthem for the Republican Party.

The verse, innocent as it seemed at the time, goes on to threaten eventual public exposure...

Oh, no, no you can't disguise
(You can't disguise, no you can't disguise)

Well, the Republicans, bless their little hearts, have resolutely ignored the import of the second two lines of the refrain, as they continue to cling to the first two lines as a strategic response to whatever they find unlikable in our shifting political landscape. In fact, they've been so successful in elevating lies to a status where they've become worthy of discussion, we are often placed in the unenviable position of defending reality or a political position against the onslaught of either (choose one) gross stupidity, willful misrepresentation, or extremist religious ideology.

(If you chose " All of the Above" consider yourself smarter than most people who vote for Republican candidates.)

What songs must echo through your mind when you vote for the party that angrily shouts "Death Panels!" in response to a proposal that seeks to help the elderly prepare for their end of days.

Tell me lies,
Tell me sweet little lies...

And what refrain do you sing to yourself when you deny global warming and minimize it as a liberal conspiracy to hobble industry and waste taxpayer dollars? Even as you're forced to shout, rather than sing, to be heard above the 100-year storms, once-in-a-lifetime floods, and record-breaking droughts and wildfires that are suddenly multiplying on the planet like Pharaoh's plagues?

Tell me, do they really believe God made Adam from dust, and Eve from Adam's rib bone? Or that Darwinism is heresy, evolution an atheist's revenge? Could anyone with higher than a fifth-grade education truly believe that?

Tell me lies,
Tell me sweet little lies...

But the biggest, balls-of-brass lies are the ones they sing about George W. Bush and Barack Hussein Obama (yes, the "Hussein" must be kept silent because lying Republican extremists regard the name as proof positive that Barack Obama is not only a Muslim but an Islamic terrorist out to destroy the American way of life).

And, of course, it's also final proof -- if any is needed -- that our president wasn't even born on American soil!

Oh, no, no you can't disguise
(You can't disguise, no you can't disguise)

Then there's the question of their wholesale ransacking of government programs. Programs critical to the upward mobility of the middle class, programs crucial to the very survival of the social safety net. The Republicans blame it all on Barack Hussein Obama and his policies, as if he were responsible for the size of the national debt, as if he chose to conduct two wars at once, as if the country's financial sector collapsed on his watch instead of his predecessor's, as if his policies somehow led to the recession he inherited!

As Bill Clinton said about the Republicans at the Democratic convention, "They made the mess, then blame him cause he hasn't cleaned it up fast enough."

So, why suddenly do we need to throw out the character and conscience of America, as illustrated in the warp and woof of 80-plus years of humane, socially progressive legislation? Why should financial scarcity brought on by the excesses of a Republican administration -- an administration so unconcerned about the public treasury its prescription drug bill prohibited the U.S. government from bargaining for better prices? Why should Bush's many over-indulgences, managerial incompetencies and financial missteps be allowed to kill off programs that were the work of many administrations and the combined will of the American people in the modern era?

There was no need to defenestrate government programs, no need to tinker with Medicare benefits, no push to reduce the Social Cecurity cost-of-living adjustments before George W. Bush embroiled us in two unwinnable wars and looted the treasury with two rounds of tax cuts. As was often remarked, no previous president had ever called for tax cuts in the midst of a war -- let alone two wars!

That was only one of George W. Bush's many firsts. Like being the first president to initiate a preemptive war, the first to make torture an acceptable means of interrogation, the first to attack a foreign country on trumped-up evidence, the first to cripple his own war effort by starting a second war before finishing the first, and the first ex-president who can't travel to foreign countries for fear of being arrested and tried as a war criminal.

Oh, no, no you can't disguise
(You can't disguise, no you can't disguise)

By the time the Republicans -- following the dictates of their millionaire and billionaire masters -- finish dismantling assistance programs for the poor, eliminating food stamps and Pell grants, crippling Social Security and Medicare, killing off public sector jobs, there won't be an America left to celebrate as the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

We'll think of it instead as the Land of the Rich and the Home of the Poor.

And that's no lie.

[Learning she was in love triangle with Mick's daughter drove Emily Lloyd to suicide attempt]

Daily Mail, April 27, 2013 (excerpted)
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/event/article-2314774/Emily-Lloyd-Hollywood-giant-sweet-shop-Steven-Spielberg-warned-sucked-in.html

The last thing I expected after my breakdown on Chicago Joe And The Showgirl was to fall in love.

One night my friend Sacha Puttnam, the son of film producer David, arrived to take me out. He brought a musician friend of his called Gavin Rossdale. With Gavin and I there seemed an instant connection. Around this time I became friends with Amy Fleetwood, the daughter of Mick, the founder of Fleetwood Mac.

Gavin and I grew closer. This was in the days before he formed his band Bush. We were in a nightclub and he hinted he had feelings for me. We had our first kiss and I could sense the fairytale beginning.

A few days later I was out with Amy and I told her I had met someone I liked. We got chatting and Amy then told me about a man she was keen on. Suddenly it occurred to me that it was the same guy. It was Gavin.

Gavin admitted that, yes, he was involved with Amy but that the relationship was new and that he had developed strong feelings for me and didn’t know what to do. Neither did I. The inevitable happened. It was the first time for me, but Gavin made it clear he wasn’t going to give Amy up.

One evening while I was waiting for Gavin at his flat a desperate state of despair overwhelmed me. I searched the bathroom cabinet and found razor blades and aspirin. After taking the tablets I slashed my wrists and arms.

It was Gavin’s friend who found me. The Charter Nightingale Hospital in London was my home for the next six weeks.

50 Albums To Play After A Breakup

Whether you’re distraught, angry, or feeling sorta numb, these are the records that are there for you when you need it most. Some will cheer you up, and others will just let you wallow.

1. Fleetwood Mac, Rumours

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/enhanced/webdr06/2013/5/14/16/enhanced-buzz-3300-1368563107-21.jpg

The ultimate breakup album, and the rare collection of songs to offer both sides of the story, since the record largely documents the dissolution of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks’ long-term relationship with each other. As an added bonus, Christine McVie’s songs are about the aftermath of her split from her husband and bandmate John McVie. Every song on the record deals with some aspect of heartbreak, but Buckingham’s “Go Your Own Way” stands out as possibly the most passive-aggressive rock anthem of all time.

Promoter takes on Dunedin stadium over 'wrong' fee
By Nigel Benson of the Otago Daily Times

The promoter of a Fleetwood Mac concert whose Dunedin date was cancelled says he has taken legal action over a $50,000 cancellation fee from Forsyth Barr Stadium.

McManus Entertainment managing director Andrew McManus told the Otago Daily Times from Melbourne yesterday (WED) he had taken legal action against Forsyth Barr Stadium over the fee.

Mr McManus said he agreed a deal with Dunedin Venues Management Ltd in January to bring Aerosmith and Fleetwood Mac to Dunedin.

"We agreed to a contract for $200,000 for Aerosmith and $200,000 for a Fleetwood Mac concert later this year. When I did the initial deal, I honestly believed I had both tours."

These are amounts paid by the stadium to the promoter.

Aerosmith played at the stadium on April 24 and Fleetwood Mac was to perform on December 17.

However, Fleetwood Mac subsequently committed to United States promoter Live Nation, ruling out a Dunedin concert.

The concert cancellation activated a $50,000 cancellation fee, which Mr McManus disputed and said he would fight.

"I've been a promoter for 27 years and I've never encountered anything like this before. It's morally and professionally wrong.

"The whole experience with Dunedin and the stadium has been tarnished. I guarantee you I will never, ever bring another show to Dunedin while those people are in charge."

Forsyth Barr Stadium chief executive Darren Burden said yesterday the terms of the contract were "explicit".

"We have a contract with McManus for Aerosmith and Fleetwood Mac. It was a two-show deal," Mr Burden said.

"We were formally informed on Monday that the Fleetwood Mac concert would not be proceeding, so we therefore began working through the provisions of the contract in respect of cancellation."

"It is all in accordance with the contract. It was very explicit that it was Aerosmith and Fleetwood Mac."

Mr McManus has previously toured Fleetwood Mac twice and solo tours by Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood.

[Excerpt from Marc Cohn interview in Charlotte Observer]

"I think all of us, not matter what our arc has been over the years, we're all kind of faced with the same reality, which is, it comes down to playing live," Cohn says in a telephone call from his New York City home.

"I mean, if Fleetwood Mac is having to reassess how they release their music, that tells you everything you need to know. It's like, those of us who are going to keep having careers, have to deliver on stage. That's the end, that's it."

[excerpt from a rugby article] Taranaki Daily

http://www.ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=1093259

New Plymouth's Yarrow Stadium will tonight host 23,300 rugby fans when the All Blacks play France in one of rugby's most fickle and celebrated matchups.

The All Blacks have already sewn up the three-match series, so who wins is largely irrelevant, but the rare provincial test has already been an economic victory for Taranaki.

New Plymouth's 700 or so hotel and motel rooms are booked out, bars are rolling in extra beer kegs, and restaurants and cafes are bracing for an onslaught.

"We've had extra staff on all week," says Kerry Vosseler, of New Plymouth's Chaos cafe.

"And it's been justified. We're expecting to be as busy as we were during Fleetwood Mac, and that is the busiest we have ever been."

[Keith Morris from Black Flag doesn't seem like much of a fan. Here is an excerpt from an interview]

The Washington Times Communities, June 27, 2013 by Kevin Wells

KW: How did you come to start Black Flag with Greg Ginn?

KM: Greg, who is the guitar player and one of the major song writers, one of the major driving forces behind Black Flag, we were friends through him coming into a record store with his younger sister. His younger sister was going out with the guy that owned the record store. The guy that owned the record store, at the time, was into sappy, limp, lifeless, like Laurel Canyon folk. He thought the greatest thing going on at the time was Lindsey Buckingham – Stevie Nicks album. He was a big of stuff like Joni Mitchell. I’m not dissing that stuff because it all has its time and its place. You’re gonna hear it somewhere or keep your fingers crossed, you won’t hear it. Basically, the majority of the stuff that he was playing in the store was not stuff that interested me.

My brother does a weekly radio show and I told him he should use a Fleetwood Mac song as bumper music this week because of their upcoming show in San Diego friday. He agreed, and wanted me to pick a song that didn't get a lot of airplay. So I sent him "Paper Doll" and "Thrown Down" and let him pick. He chose "Thrown Down" and just played it. :) Thought it was interesting he chose that one.

Fleetwood Mac offered two concerts but challenges behind the scenes surfaced each time. When the band arrived late at the Cedar Falls Holiday Inn, workers had already cleared away food laid out for the band.

On their return show, the concert was re-booked from a Saturday to a Monday because singer Stevie Nicks had a throat ailment. Fox and his staff faced the prospect of refunding tickets.

"It was just not a fun concert to do," Fox added.

Rock N’ Roll Diary: August 7

On this day in 1970, Fleetwood Mac welcomed its first female member, Christine McVie. What was the first full album she was credited on as being a member of the band?

Answer: Kiln House

Here’s the rest of the Rock N’ Roll Diary for today:

1970: Fleetwood Mac welcomed its first female member: Christine McVie, wife of Mac bassist, John McVie. Prior to joining the group she recorded solo under her maiden name, Christine Perfect.

1974: Peter Wolf married Faye Dunaway. The two later divorced.

1979: A crazed Marshall Tucker Band fan in California stole a car from the parking lot outside the Long Beach Arena and drove right into the building, smashing down two banks of metal doors and one concrete wall in the process.

1987: A Fleetwood Mac band meeting turned ugly when guitarist Lindsey Buckingham announced plans to strike out on his own and then resigned from the band.

2002: Ozzy Osbourne rejoined Ozz-Fest in Clarkston, Michigan after taking a few weeks off from the tour to be by wife Sharon’s side as she began chemotherapy treatment for colon cancer. That therapy was successful in forcing Sharon’s cancer into remission.

1981: Tom Petty played the Boston Garden.

[Excerpt from an article on Keith Morris. I'm just surprised he says that SN and LB were playing and not FM]

http://www.vice.com/read/black-flag-anatomy-of-a-lawsuit

Black Flag: Anatomy of a Lawsuit

The way that I met Greg Ginn was through his younger sister, Erica, while I was working at this record store, Rubicon, on Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach in 1975. The gentleman who owned the record store, Michael, had a mad crush on Erica. So Greg Ginn would walk down to the record store with his sister—and Erica and Michael would go off to do whatever young lovers do—hold hands and watch the seagulls fly or the surfers on Hermosa Beach. You know, they’d get lunch or beer or cigarettes, and I would be left to run the record store while Greg Ginn hung around, waiting for his sister.

They were always playing Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles and the first three Springsteen records and Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in the record store, and I wasn’t real excited about listening to them. What was happening, as this music was being played, was the seeds of my musical rebellion were starting to come to fruition.

In Rolling Stone's annual readers poll from 1977, Mac beat out the Eagles for artist of the year and band of the year. As Marc Eliot writes in "To The Limit": "The British-American group would always have a broader if less intense following. Quite simply, the presence of Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie was what separated the men from the boys ... If Mac also 'aged' more gracefully, it was because the music it made came from the real-life drama of its romantic relationships, while the songs of the Eagles seemed by comparison to come from loners, not-so-young men acting like teenage boys still on the sexual make."

Rockin' the Music World "Fleetwood Mac"

American Nationalist Network [it's a racist show, so if you want the FM documentary with a large dollop of bigotry . . .]

This is a good one for this week as Robert Lloyd brings us the true story of one of the sexiest and talented bands ever in the history of music. This group was formed early on as a blues band and yet with a few personnel changes came an explosion that took the music world for all it's got. We ask:

1.
Who is Peter Green and why all the fuss in starting a blues band?

2.
Where did the name Fleetwood Mac come from and why?

3.
Did you ever hear of a drummer 6'7” tall? You have now.

4.
The talented Christine Perfect shows up one day in the studio.

5.
Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks enter with a historical bang!

6.
Does this band escape the drugs and turmoil of rock and roll?

Their beautiful music will be heard. Contact Robert at [email protected]

Wow, not so mild this article. But in my opinion it's true that Eagles, a great band, is a bit overrated. It's a questions that personally stands right for two factors: musical offer and success. But that is the good thing of music: in some ways is pretty subjective.

Yes, not a mild article. It is very bias. I love the Eagles; I also love Fleetwood Mac - but personally? The Mac will beat them every time for me, not necessarily because the music is better. But just because there is a larger back-catalogue of Fleetwood Mac tracks than there is for the Eagles. Eagles have produced one double album this century called Long Road out of Eden, and a live album in 1994 or thereabouts called Hell Freezes Over (playing on the fact that they had a reunion after 25 years apart musically/professionally).

So why would I go for a boring blokey band like the Eagles when their songs are so ... few and far between...albeit most Eagles songs I really like...

I like Fleetwood Mac because there are women in the band, and I like that band chemistry/dynamic. Also a contralto singer and an alto singer - Stevie and Christine - sound very good together when harmonising. Stevie's voice is very deep for a female. Christine's is moderately high, not soprano but still very beautiful. My own voice sounds like a boring baritone to me

Yes, their vocal harmonising is magnificent. I like the attention given to the vocal parts, in every single part: for example their choruses were not so bland, boring, but perfectly made.
Stevie's voice was getting deeper after Tusk I guess, vocal stress and many, many factors.

Ten Facts about Warren Zevon

Ten years after Warren Zevon's death, we still find the singer-songwriter underrated – and fascinating. For proof, we offer ten unmatchable facts about the life and career of the man who deadpanned his way through "Werewolves of London" and other classics.

1. Zevon wasn't born into a musical family. In fact, his dad was a bookie, and one of his most notorious customers was mobster Mickey Cohen.

2. Zevon himself was musical from a young age. By 13, His junior high school band teacher introduced him to Igor Stravinsky, who encouraged his interest in classical music. At 16, Zevon quit school and ran away to become a folk singer.

3. Before his solo career took off, Zevon wrote songs for The Turtles and toured as keyboard player for The Everly Brothers.

4. Zevon once roomed with future Fleetwood Mac members Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham – before any of the three were famous.

5. BBC Radio 2 listeners rated the opening line of "Werewolves of London" the best opening song lyric of all time: "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand, walkin' through the streets of Soho in the rain …"

6. Zevon only cracked the Top 40 once, with "Werewolves of London." Linda Ronstadt reached No. 31 with her cover of his "Poor Poor Pitiful Me."

7. Not one but two of Zevon's songs are about the death of Elvis Presley: "Jesus Mentioned" and "Porcelain Monkey."

8. In the 1980s, Zevon joined members of R.E.M. to form the supergroup Hindu Love Gods, which had a couple of minor hits on the modern rock charts. R.E.M.'s Bill Berry, Peter Buck and Mike Mills served as Zevon's backup band for his 1987 album Sentimental Hygiene. -

9. For two decades, Zevon was a frequent guest and substitute bandleader on David Letterman's late night shows. He called Letterman "the best friend my music's ever had." The day after Zevon's death on September 7, 2003, the Late Show with David Letterman band played his songs throughout the show.

10. After Zevon's diagnosis with cancer, his friend Letterman asked if he had any wisdom to share about living and dying. Zevon's response was his oft-quoted mantra: "Enjoy every sandwich." -

Excerpt from an interview with Haim

http://www.987fm.com/articles/real-questions-474067/real-questions-with-haim-11696795/

You guys are often compared to Fleetwood Mac. Growing up, who got to be Stevie?

Danielle: I think I really vonnected to Christine McVie. I feel like when you listen to Stevie, it’s out there and you feel it, and Christine has a more subdued voice and I always felt like I did too. I think I connected to that.

Alana: You’re the Christine and Este’s the Stevie. Can I be the Lindsey?

Danielle: Yeah you can be the Lindsay.

Este: You can be the Lindsay. But then I also get to be Mick Fleetwood.

From an Esquire article on Haim

http://www.esquire.com/blogs/culture/haim-band-anyone-can-love

Haim are like Fleetwood Mac in another way. Many credit Fleetwood Mac with the birth of "adult contemporary," that most hated of genres that takes from other genres and makes it palatable to the masses. But Fleetwood Mac also made something unique and beautiful. Lindsey Buckingham's guitar thrashing didn't fight with Stevie Nicks's wistful singing; they resolved into something we can all agree upon. One of the best things about Fleetwood Mac, aside from the harmonies, is that you can walk into any bar in America and put one of their hits on the jukebox. No one will complain. Quite a few people will get that familiar rush of pleasure from a song that never gets old. Haim haven't proven themselves as timeless as Fleetwood Mac, but they pass the jukebox test. Sit down anyone you know and play them the new Haim album — your mom, your grandma, your uncle, your friend who hates everything, your twelve-year-old. If they have a pulse, it's a safe bet that soon enough they'll be nodding along.

Ten Bands Who Got Better (Or Still Ruled) After Their Lead Singer Left

Oct 11, 2013 by chris hampton

Mick Fleetwood and the McVies had recorded nine studio albums before they brought in Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to replace Bob Welch (who was himself a replacement for Danny Kirwan and Peter Green before him) for Fleetwood Mac's 1975 self-titled album. Instead of plunking down "Rhiannon" or "Landslide" from that album, let's pluck "Go Your Own Way" from the cornerstone of any record collection, Rumours (also one of the best-selling albums of all time) to really demonstrate just how Buckingham and Nicks made this band synonymous with cocaine, L.A., and the self-indulgent maximalism of the '70s. Somehow, I mean each of those things in a good way.

They have fans in high places:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/why-friends-call-sec-chair-155344581.html

In the week's issue of The New Yorker, Nicholas Lemann profiles Mary Jo White, with friends and colleagues describing the SEC chair " as the most competitive and driven person they have ever encountered."

Lemann charts the career of the "plainspoken" White, who loves Fleetwood Mac, tennis, and requiring Wall Street bigwigs to acknowledge wrongdoing in SEC settlements.

As he introduces GYOW, this DJ plays a clip of Stevie saying that LB was the romantic love of her life and thinks if they hadn't moved to Los Angeles, they'd have gotten married.

The DJ says he thinks they're secretly living together in Arizona or something.

[QUOTE=Tango;770289]Believe it or not, it's called Stevie. I don't know if it's been released with Brian singing it, but I found a cover of it on a tribute album:

http://www.answers.com/topic/caroline-now-the-songs-of-brian-wilson-and-the-beach-boys

The cover is on iTunes.

I just snoped around a bit. Nancy says it's unreleased (by Brian), but she has the lyrics up here:

I cannot believe how intensely powerful and far reaching her effect on men was.. I just read the song Magnet and Steel was about her too.

Album That Has Nothing On Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ Wins Grammy Award
NEWS IN BRIEF • Entertainment • Music • ISSUE 50•03 • Jan 26, 2014

LOS ANGELES—Recognized with one of the ceremony’s most coveted awards, an album that doesn’t even begin to stack up to Fleetwood Mac’s quintessential musical achievement Rumours reportedly won Album of the Year at the Grammys on Sunday night. “Wow, what an honor,” said the recipient of the statuette, an individual who sources confirmed could never create anything even remotely on par with what is indisputably the finest and most well-honed artistic statement in rock music, and, furthermore, who isn’t one-tenth the songwriter that Lindsey Buckingham is. “I just [don’t deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the brilliant musicians behind Rumours, a record that since its release has captivated millions with its ingenious yet playful compositions, flawless production, and sheer emotional resonance. The Mac’s 1977 masterpiece is truly without parallel, and modern-day pop acts such as myself can only dream of ever of creating anything that begins to approach its unsurpassed brilliance]. Thank you.” According to ceremony attendees, the presentation of the Best Album award followed the evening’s previous announcement of the winners of Best Pop Solo Performance, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist, not one of whom wrote or played on “You Make Loving Fun.”

This may be one of the first factual articles The Onion has written;)

Five Great Musical Duos-In-Waiting By Jesse Sendejas Jr. Mon., Feb. 3 2014

Shakira and Trampled by Turtles
Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood Mac

Before they were rock legends, the founding members of present-day Fleetwood Mac performed with John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers, so roots-rockers Trampled by Turtles isn't that far a stretch. The track I'd really love to hear them take on from the album is "Landslide"; Dave Simonett would kill, singing lyrics not too distant from the TBT norm.

Among the pantheon of women singers who sound goat-like, it's Stevie Nicks at No. 1 and Shakira a close second. So you are practically getting Nicks, only with a bitchin' accent. As a bonus, we'd get her alternating Nicks' twirls with her own sexy belly-dancing gyrations in the "Rhiannon" video.

Which, I don't know why it didn't happen sooner given how much of their music was in the show and that Stevie ****ing Nicks was in it. So. [From an article about the Grateful Dead, arrested on Bourbon Street Drug Raid in 1970]

http://www.nola.com/music/index.ssf/2014/02/set_up_like_a_bowling_pin_a_lo.html

Rolling Stone magazine picked up the news of the arrests and their aftermath with a piece titled "New Orleans Cops & the Dead Bust," the cover story for its issue of March 7, 1970. It made reference, in fact, to The Times-Picayune's coverage: "'King of Acid arrested,' the local press bubbled."

The piece noted that the band played a third night at the Warehouse, with Fleetwood Mac, which became a benefit concert for a "bust fund for both themselves and out-of-town bands." (The Rolling Stone story reported that the Dead had spent the take from the first gig of their Warehouse stand posting bail for the 19 arrested.)

From an article on Graham Colton, Alternative Addiction by Neil K. Warner:

http://www.alternativeaddiction.com/musicnews/article/3660/Graham-Colton:-Being-Uncomfortable-Never-Sounded-So-Good

"Summer to Me" is the song that Colton said he’s received the most feedback on but what makes this record worth spending buying on iTunes is a song called "Arms" which is a bass driven song that he co-wrote with Brine Webb. It includes a heavy dose of guitar rifts that help this track stand out. Colton calls it his tribute to Fleetwood Mac because he thinks it’s a groove that Mick Fleetwood would come up with.

It almost sounds like Stevie Nicks joins Lindsey Buckingham on the chorus and sings, “You run away, you run away you run away from me.”

“That one was totally about trying to capture a sound or a mood. I wanted to write something that’s kind of Fleetwood Mac-ish, feels good and kind of hypnotic,” Colton said. “Arms maybe the only song that started with the rhythm. I thought let’s just jam to this and see what happens. I really credit Brinee for establishing that kind of groove. That was an important song for us. Once we got that one it was like we’ve got a record.”

[This is from a Guardian article on the Olympics. Hey! I don't think comparing skating to Rumours is stupid!]

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2014/feb/21/sochi-2014-britain-ice-skating

Barker did remark, apropos of the wonderfully graceful Carolina Kostner, that "she knows how to sell a programme", immediately evoking 50s images of young women in cinema aisles with torches and trays of ice creams. But there was nothing remotely as stupid as this remark from one of the halfpipe commentators, about a competitor in the women's event on Thursday: "She's skiing the equivalent of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours – a seminal album!"

Carl Wiser (Songfacts): How did you end up in Derek and the Dominos?

Bobby Whitlock: I was with Delaney And Bonnie and them. I was the last one to leave that organization. Everybody else did (Joe Cocker's album) Mad Dogs & Englishmen. I stayed with them and helped them do a couple more albums. Then the pressure got to be too much and Steve Cropper suggested I go see Eric and see what he's doing. He actually bought my ticket to England. I called Eric and said, "Hey, what are you up to," and he said, "I'm just getting my hair cut." I said, "I need to get out of here, is it all right if I come visit?" He said, "Sure, come on over," so I was over there 2 days later. I was just hanging with him, we got around to picking and singing, and the next thing I know, we decided to put a group together. He and I were writing, it just happened real natural for us because we already had a friendship developed through the Delaney And Bonnie thing. He went on the road with us. We already had a friendship going, so us sitting around writing, playing and singing was not uncommon. I was staying at his country house at Heartwood Edge in Surrey. I knew George. George went out for a couple of dates with us when we were on tour with Eric. George, Paul and them had broken up. I was friends with George when all this was happening. He was playing me the songs he wanted to do on his record. Eric's ex-wife, I used to go with her sister, so that's another way I was hooked up with George. I spent a lot of time out there at Friar Park. George plays me all this stuff. He wanted to do his first record after The Beatles - he never got to do his own stuff, just one song on each album. He wanted to know what Eric and I thought about putting a band together for his album. Eric and I were already talking about it, and we had already talked about having Jim Keltner come over and be in our band. Keltner was the original drummer, and Carl Radle. They were out on tour, they were still doing Mad Dogs. It turns out Jim Gordon and Carl come storming in from the Mad Dogs & Englishmen thing. We started right in on the session. I made a call, I called Carl Radle and Jim Keltner. Keltner was on the road with Gabor Szabo, and Carl Radle was on the road with Leon and them. I talked to Keltner, and Keltner was going to come over when he got finished, but Jim Gordon got finished with that Mad Dogs thing and he stormed right on over and was in on it right away. The availability was there for a drummer, and Jim Gordon seized the moment. Keltner said Jim Gordon's been taking some pretty important gigs from him in Derek And The Dominoes and All Things Must Pass. He was there and the need was immediate, so he filled the slot. The Dominoes were formed during the recording of All Things Must Pass. Carl and Jim wound up coming out to Eric's at Heartwood Edge and we stayed out there and rehearsed. That got to be too much, so we got the Domino flat in town on 33 Turlough Street. We got out of Eric's place and the 3 of us were in downtown London raising all manner of hell and unrest.

Well, hmmm...

Even more Hmmm is that Bobby Whitlock's wife is CoCo Carmel, fka Kim Carmel/Kim Carmel-Bramlett (Delaney's second wife; Bekka's former step-mum).

At 51, Monahan knows he can’t hang his hat on the past. The big question is how to keep Bluesfest relevant after 20 years.

“Look at the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac; to me their run is pretty much done. People who wanted to see them, have seen them.

“For me, to see someone like David Bowie, that’s exciting. The mystique of the guy makes him interesting.”

That’s Monahan, stirring the pot one more time.

Does your dog howl every time he hears Neil Young? Or is Carrie Underwood more of your pooch’s thing?

The Winnipeg Humane Society launched its first Celebrity Dog Bowl Auction today. Visitors to its website, winnipeghumanesociety.ca can bid on 20 autographed bowls signed by the likes of Young, Underwood, Rihanna, Fleetwood Mac, Joan Rivers, George Takei or even the dog whisperer, Cesar Millan.

Funds raised from the auction will go to the Humane Society. Those interested have until March 23 to submit their bids.

"This is a huge gesture, as it helps raise awareness and much-needed funds for the thousands of animals that come through our doors," said Bill McDonald, the Humane Society’s CEO.

The bowls were donated and decorated by Winnipeg’s Brush Fire Ceramic Studio.

Wow. That's brave of Miley. Braver than getting naked on a demolition ball anyway. On the subject of covers, I recently covered Gold Dust Woman, stripped back acoustic. I'm amazed at how many people have told me they've never heard this song before! Obviously not crazed Fleetwod fans, but still, people who claim to like like them were surprised by it. Was it such an obscure choice for a cover? After Hole? (awesome version in my opinion)

Anyway here's mine and my bands version, if you want to check it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbO_xVPmrBM :-)

In the film, where a fired colleague takes his radio station hostage, Partridge (when not introducing Fleetwood Mac as “soft-rock cocaine enthusiasts”) effectively hosts the siege, performing for news cameras and onlookers.

Or albums that you were maybe listening to or perhaps are important for you. Personally, I hear some Elvis Costello in the first song and one song sounds like Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams." I wondered what your take on that was.

Yeah, I would say Rumours was a big influence. This is weird, but it was something that I was listening to a lot: Hot Buttered Soul [Isaac Hayes' 1969 album]. "Hurt So Bad" was kind of a take on that. But I was thinking about classic musicians and bands. Another weird one was Blue Oyster Cult. I was listening to that and thinking, "Wow, this is awesome. I just want to make a badass rock album." And I think I kind of accomplished that.

The musical evolution of cool: from heinous to hip

Whether it's Phil Collins or Fleetwood Mac, acts that used to be a joke are now being hailed as gods, says Paul Lester

***

Inspiring covers is one thing; but actually exerting an influence is quite another. Queen have been newly accepted by the criterati but they haven't – pace the Darkness, and maybe some of Muse's output – influenced any bands. Who sounds like Queen? On the other hand, Fleetwood Mac have had the double-whammy seal of latterday approval: they've had journalists fawning all over them, and countless groups (Haim being the most successful example) striving to replicate that deathlessly immaculate west-coast-pop sound. I've been writing the New Band of the Day column for six and a half years and I'd venture that the most frequently cited influence – way more than the Beatles, Stones or the Velvets – would be the Mac, although I'd concede that this might be because I seek out purveyors of deathlessly immaculate west coast pop.

[The record companies sue Pandora. FM is among the artists whose music royalties are at issue]

U.S. music labels sue Pandora over royalties for golden oldies
By Joseph Ax - Reuters

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/17/us-pandora-lawsuit-idUSBREA3G2F920140417

NEW YORK Thu Apr 17, 2014

(Reuters) - Several major U.S. music companies sued Pandora Media Inc on Thursday, accusing the online streaming service of cheating them out of royalties by playing thousands of pre-1972 recordings without paying royalties.

The music in question, from musicians such as the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Marvin Gaye and Fleetwood Mac, is "some of the most iconic music in the world," the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit, filed in New York state court in Manhattan, seeks unspecified damages and an immediate halt to Pandora's "massive and continuing unauthorized commercial exploitation" of older songs.

The plaintiffs include Vivendi SA's Capitol Records Inc and UMG Recordings Inc, Sony Corp's Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group Corp and ABKCO Music & Records Inc.

Pandora did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Federal copyright law does not apply to pre-1972 recordings, but the plaintiffs say New York state law provides copyright protection for such recordings.

"Pandora's refusal to pay plaintiffs for its use of those recordings is fundamentally unfair," the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit is not the first to seek fees from digital music companies for pre-1972 recordings.

Last year, for instance, a U.S. nonprofit that collects digital royalties for musicians, SoundExchange, filed a federal lawsuit in Washington, D.C., against satellite radio company Sirius XM Holdings Inc that includes claims of underpayment regarding pre-1972 recordings. The lawsuit remains pending.

Royalties represent a major expense for Pandora, currently amounting to approximately half of its annual revenue, and keeping them from increasing is crucial to the company's business.

"If we are required to obtain licenses for pre-1972 sound recordings to avoid liability and are unable to secure such licenses, then we may have to remove pre-1972 sound recordings from our service, which could harm our ability to attract and retain users," the company said in a regulatory filing in February.

In an unrelated case in March, a federal judge in New York declined to alter the rate that Pandora pays to songwriters to license their music, following a nonjury trial that pitted the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers against Pandora.

The case is Capitol Records et al v Pandora Media Inc, New York State Supreme Court, New York County, No. 651195/2014.

Another way of saying they don't mind stealing music from artists to promote their own website. If they can't secure the licenses, they shouldn't be allowed to play or sell the songs.

[This is an excerpt from a metaphysical book. Ok, how does this writer know what level of reincarnation you are at? Personally, I can't imagine that Mick is at a very high level of incarnation. I think he has a lot of improvements to make through the generations. I guess Mick is just considered a leader]

http://www.briefingwire.com/pr/21-incarnation-levels-winning-involves-injury-to-a-victim-someone-who-has-to-be-the-loser

21 Incarnation Levels : Winning involves injury to a victim, someone who has to be the loser.

See "The Great Book of New Jerusalem" written by David Joseph Brideau for further details regarding this new discovery no one has ever revealed before.

***

David also said, "Not one of them is good, for God alone is good."

Sachiel, Astarte, Baal, Nehema, Sandalphon, and Beelzebub are level 7-12.

Samael, Gabriel, Lucifer, Michael, Asmodeus, Belphegor, Adramelech, Cassiel, and Lilith are level 13-21.

Marlon Brando and Stephen Segal are Adramelech for example, in hell these are 'the warden'.

Samael is represented best by Cheech Marin, Robin Williams, and Ronald Reagan.

In heaven, Melchizedic functions as a sort of university head, or dean of a college. You will notice Mr Hand from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and George Carlin, who will go on to become Joe Cocker, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac; are Melchizedic.

Stay tuned for more regarding this interesting topic...

I am well aware that Fleetwood Mac existed before Buckingham/Nicks but I can't say I've ever heard any "early years" pre 1972 songs on the radio...On rare occasion "Hero's are hard to find " or "Sentimental Lady" but that's a bit later...It would be nice if the band would play some of the pre-B/N songs...Since the blues really isn't LB's thing maybe they should bring Billy & Rick out for "Black Magic Woman" "Oh Well" and "Rattlesnake Shake"...

Lindsey can play the blues. He just chooses not to. Billy and Rick should never step foot on a FM stage again as a lead guitarist while they still have Lindsey around.

Everything that Fleetwood Mac have ever done I love.

And I just love, love, love Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac are a part of me on a cellular level but tragically I’ve never seen them live.

STEVIE NICKS AND LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM: Buckingham Nicks

(Import)

I don’t know how I found this album as it is pretty rare but I discovered it in around 1984 and played it over and over.

The cover is absolutely beautiful and they’re both in their prime and the songs are really romantic, really beautiful and really simple.

Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood filed for bankruptcy today in 1984. The band had been on hiatus, and while Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, and Christine McVie had all released solo albums…well, Mick was the drummer, and had somehow managed to blow a mind-boggling amount of money, though he did manage to pick up little extra cash acting.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/05/29/4939967/matrimony-returns-home-in-wake.html

Of the new tracks, “Lucky Man” and “A Different Kind of Loving” play up what Irvine jokingly calls their hillbilly Fleetwood Mac nature, with Brown’s bombastic delivery channeling Lindsey Buckingham against Hardee Brown’s softer harmonies. It’s refreshing for anyone who’s been longing for Fleetwood Mac-style pop music.

“I heard Stevie Nicks say when she played Charlotte, ‘Whenever you write a song, don’t worry about the arrangement, just go with the feeling.’ I got goosebumps,” Brown says. “Music is just emotions. ... If it just takes you somewhere you didn’t know you were going to go for three minutes or an hour and a half, that’s awesome.”

Fleetwood Mac - Paper Doll

"Directed by Peter Conn in 1992, this video was a lot of fun to make. Dealing only with Mick Fleetwood who wanted the video to this song to be made from all their old videos for the retrospective album "25 Years - The Chain," I came up with the idea of projecting the old videos on bodies covered in white makeup then rephotographing them.

One interesting fact is that this video had the easiest approval of any FM video ever done at Warner Records. The reason for that came from the original design that there would be two levels of approvals, the first being an edit of the song using the old videos. This was circulated among the band members including Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie, who saw themselves and of course approved. The edit was then transferred to 16mm film for projection.

The other interesting fact is that the girl cast to be the human projection screen was the voluptuous Julie Strain, Penthouse Pet of the Year and famous B movie actress. Although never revealed fully in the video, she made for quite a screen."

http://www.laweekly.com/2014-06-05/eatdrink/superba-food-and-bread-review-an-exciting-addition-to-the-original-in-venice/

Hibler has expanded the Superba brand, with a large new restaurant a few blocks away on Lincoln, at Marco Place. A former auto body shop, Superba Food and Bread has been opened up and glassed in so that it feels as if the building is made of pure air and light — an accomplishment made all the more impressive by the jumbled urban streetscape just outside its door. The bones of the building and the materials used for infrastructure provide almost the only decoration, though presiding over the room is an image of Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood — the photo from the cover of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album, which takes up an entire wall.

For the Record: How I Saved My Vinyl Album from My Cat

Consider yourself warned: Cats are insidious—and they insist on being adorable at the same time. So you can’t even get mad at them. What jerks… fluffy, adorable jerks.

The other day, I came home, walked through the door, and found my feline friend sleeping on my couch. He yawned and sat up—and underneath him I spotted a vinyl record. And not just any vinyl. My Fleetwood Mac Rumors album. The album that I listened to over and over again as a teen. The album that sang me through countless hours of physics homework and hopeless teen love.

Apparently, my cat’s butt puts out heat roughly equivalent to the forges of Mt. Doom. Because when I lifted Nimbus away from my album, I discovered that his butt shape remained in the vinyl. It was warped.

I won’t lie. I was upset. Sure, I was the one to leave it on the couch after a late night nostalgia session. And sure, my cat has no idea what vinyl is or any idea of the importance of classic rock and roll. But that album was part of my adolescence. This was part of my thirteen-year-old soul.

But, it couldn’t be that bad, right? I placed the album on the turntable. The pitch of Nicks and Buckingham waivered out as the record wobbled through the song. It was the day the music died.

Regaining my composure, my fixer spirit kicked in. I had to fix it—I just needed to know how. So I rang up a friend of mine (who has an awesome vinyl collection) and he told me just what to do. Turns out all you need to un-warp a record are some glass plates and a stove. So, I grabbed my vinyl and got to work. Along the way, I took some photos. And I made a guide, which is now publicly available on iFixit.

I did it for everyone who has ever commented on how much warmer vinyl sounds. I did it for everyone who knows every word to “Second Hand News.” I did it for every person who has a crate of old vinyl just waiting to be rediscovered. I did it for you—because if we keep fixing, yesterday doesn’t have to be gone.

Top Ten Macs, Columbus Alive

By Brad Keefe & Jesse Tigges From the July 17, 2014 edition

http://www.columbusalive.com/content/stories/2014/07/17/the-list-top-10-macs.html

With Canadian singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco coming to Skully’s this week, we’re counting down our favorite Macs ever. (We had to disqualify our editor Justin McIntosh due to professional conflicts, but he knows we love him.)

10. Big Mac

The iconic McDonald’s burger is more than 40 years old, but everyone, every now and again, gets an odd craving for this two all-beef patties, special sauce slathered monstrosity.

9. Macintosh computers

Let’s settle the Mac vs. PC debate. For ease of use and great product design, once you go Mac, you never go back.

8. Little Mac

As your avatar in “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out,” Little Mac — despite his diminutive stature — held his own with the world’s top fighters. We always got special enjoyment out of kicking Soda Popinski’s ass; he was a total tool.

7. Mac’s Café

The Short North haunt has been slinging suds and pub grub for years. If you haven’t had their scotch egg, drop everything and go to Mac’s now. No seriously, drop everything now.

6. Fleetwood Mac

Rumours. That is all.

5. Cindy “Mac” Mackenzie

Veronica Mars’ computer-hacker bestie proved to be a valuable part of the mystery-solving team and a great friend.

4. R.P. McMurphy

The protagonist of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” — indelibly portrayed by Jack Nicholson on film — was known as Mac to his friends when he led the insurrection against Nurse Ratched.

3. Bernie Mac

This Chicago-born standup comedian was truly one of the best of all-time. You’re missed, Bernie.

2. Mac ’n cheese

The term “comfort food” may be obnoxious and overused, but the best example still hits the spot every time, especially if you’ve moved on from the boxed Kraft stuff.

1. Mac from “Always Sunny”

To become the muscle in the gang on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” Mac had to reinvent himself — wearing a duster — after being stuck with Ronald McDonald as his true name. And let’s give Mac credit where credit’s due — he invented the Dick Towel! Pure genius.

It Was All Downhill After Fleetwood Mac, by Brian Shapiro

Attended: Tues. Sept. 9, 8 p.m., Paris Wine Bar; closes Sat. Sept. 20, 2 p.m.

My father was catapulted into the center of the L.A. entertainment industry universe, and I was taken along for a ride.

WE THINK: Much of Brian Shapiro's description of Life with Father is fascinating and fun, albeit a little sad. It's "my story about the stories my father told and sold," he explains, "not just to those around him, but to himself." Shapiro the Elder achieved fortune and notoriety managing the historic rise of Fleetwood Mac, but never reached that level again, despite desperate-stab projects with hair bands, Carrie Wilson, Pat Boone and a (thankfully) failed effort to televise Texas executions.

Growing up spending weekends in Dad's jet-fuelled world and weekdays at Mom and Stepdad's house, where "life was lived at a slightly different pace," must have been dizzying and depressing.

Unfortunately — despite a program note assuring us that "what's missing will not matter" — Shapiro leaves out a lot of personal material for unclear reasons. His mother gets only that one mention, and his father's personality never emerges; he talks about learning from his failures, but doesn't explain what they were. His program bio, which I read afterward, reveals an adulthood of success that's never hinted at in the show — the last we know, he was a failed roadie in his early 20's. And what happened to Dad, where is he now?

Nevertheless, it's a fun 65-minute romp, with a performance smartly sculpted by director Kelly Jennings, who varies the pace and expertly blends song snippets and a Power Point presentation into the monologue. A section we're told is better read than heard is especially fun, because Brian is free to wordlessly comment with sounds — "mmmm," "aaahh"— and arched eyebrows as we scan each revelation. Here too, though, what's missing jars: a few pictures of young Brian, but none of Dad or his four wives (the last three, young trophy wives whom he promised he would make into stars — I'd love to have seen them). For a show detailing the fact that the speaker lived an extraordinary life, generic pics of the Hollywood sign and the Golden Gate Bridge are less than compelling.

Shapiro tells his story with a microphone, which seems unnecessary in a 35-seat venue but aids the high-energy smarmy Hollywood persona that he uses to describe Dad's excesses — but then smartly drops the artifice, and the mic, at the end, finally becoming a real person in the room with us. The time seems right for open confession, but Shapiro stills leaves us wondering, and wanting more.

[from an article about the tv show Friends, uh the guy refers to Friends as the tv show that was famously about nothing. You've got your NBC sitcoms mixed up buddy]

Sep 27 2014 03:26:06

Sept. 27 (The Herald) -- FAMOUSLY a show about nothing, Friends took a whole lot of nothing and turned it into something: something enduring, sentimental, ingrained and loved.

Despite the modest hoopla about the show's latest milestones - the 10th anniversary of its final episode and 20th anniversary of the first episode - it's not something I've watched in a long time. Sure, the last three of my own friends I've been to visit have had full box sets nestled on bottom shelves, but it's a show perched in the recesses of my mind - Rachel's hair, Ross's marriages, Phoebe's evil twin, who on earth were all those people in the party scenes?

It turned out Friends and I were just on a break. To mark the anniversary, one of the Sky channels began running the show from pilot episode right through to finale. I was hooked.

Watching Friends as a Lanarkshire teenager gave life a little bit of promise: one day we could live in New York City, one day we could have a steady income without seeming to actually work, we could be glamorous, we could drink coffee. And friendship would give us all this. One's 20s seemed impossibly far away and so all that was realistically impossible, or at least improbable, seemed attainable. With 10 years to play with we could absolutely have a chic apartment and a handsome date every other weekend.

Watching Friends as an adult, an adult who never made the move to Greenwich Village, the show still resonates: Rachel is no longer an aspiration but a peer, exploring relationships, carving out careers, settling down - all things that resonate and will always resonate, and perhaps which explain the 77,700 Friends DVDs sold in the UK last year.

Rewatching Friends, I remembered something about the show: it's really funny. In that way, it's the Fleetwood Mac of television. A collective with a cult fanbase large enough to keep it touring and, while it's touring, allow new fans to discover its quirks and foibles and that it's surprisingly good.

It was good at representing those weird and unexpected moments in life. The unexpected comments from friends who should know better, life's many tiny embarrassments that no one's there to see (Rachel: "I sat down where there wasn't a chair."), the moments help comes from unusual places.

Yes, it's sentimental, but for a country practising its stoicism, sentimental is good. Yes, it's innocent - no swearing, no sexting, no nudity - and fairly twee but that makes it comfortable. Co- creator Marta Kauffman said of the

show: "Friends was about that time in your life when your
friends are your family and once you have a family, there's no need any more."
I wonder if that's the key to its success: that comparable television now is about relationships, not friendship and friendship is where real interest lies. There's a million and one representations of love but where do you go to learn the secrets of friendship?

Romance only runs so far. Successful romances do not successful television make - the thrill's in the chase. Viewers want to see successful friendships but we don't care much for happy couples because, be honest, happy couples are boring couples.

Friends, making this point, sends its characters into a more mature phase of life, happy marriage and delighted parenthood, and ends. Friends is still the bellwether depiction of being twentysomething. Hitting its own 20s, it still holds up for telling the universal story of the incremental successes of your 20s that carry you on to your 30s - working hard, scraping along, working harder, scraping less, falling out, falling in, loving widely, getting sacked, owning a pet monkey.

But then, as aspirational as it is, it's only a television programme. As Joey would say, it's a moo point.

Fleetwood Mac – Wells Fargo Center, Oct. 15

Though it featured four-fifths of the “classic” lineup, the Fleetwood Mac that toured and recorded sporadically beginning in 2003 was really Fleetwood Mac in name only.

Minus singer/keyboardist Christine McVie’s graceful and hopeful songs, there was no balance between Stevie Nicks’ ethereal witchiness and Lindsey Buckingham’s tightly-coiled intensity.

Back with the band after a 16-year absence for this “On With the Show” reunion tour, McVie has been the star of the early shows, grabbing the spotlight with her songs like “Little Lies” and “You Make Loving Fun.” Though the absence of “Hold Me” from the show so far is a borderline-criminal omission.

[from an article on Leonard Cohen] By Garry Brown | Special to The Republican on October 19, 2014

http://www.masslive.com/living/index.ssf/2014/10/garry_brown_rock_on_leonard_cohens_new_album_is_proof_its_best_to_keep_on_keepin_on.html

Why should that master of the jazz world have to retire from what he loved to do – writing and playing music? Instead, he continued to lead his orchestra until he passed away at the age of 75.

By the way, to answer my own question – Leonard Cohen celebrated his 80th birthday on Sept. 21. He was still touring as recently as 2013.

Some time later, as I had morning coffee with my edition of The Republican, a Page 2 headline grabbed me. It said, “Fleetwood Mac’s ‘dream girl’ is back.”

Wow. Seventeen years after Christine McVie “retired” from the band, there she was on stage at Madison Square Garden, back at her keyboard. With her return, a band that had formed 40-something years ago had its five key members together again as she teamed with Mick Fleetwood on drums, Lindsey Buckingham on guitar, John McVie on bass and Stevie Nicks, doing her dreamy vocals. They rocked the house for two-and-a-half hours.

You want to talk about old age? Well, Christine McVie at 71 qualifies as Fleetwood Mac’s “senior citizen.” The other four band members are well into their 60s, but they still can deliver such great hits as “Don’t Stop.”

A.L.: Yes, but being in business long enough, you realize that just because you dislike someone, it’s no reason to take a bad picture. You can show dislike. Actually, I didn’t really like Rodney Dangerfield’s personality, but that picture was a turning point for me because I was able to express my dislike with a crying baby. I learned something from Richard Avedon. He did a shooting with Fleetwood Mac for the cover of Rolling Stone and he had said it was the worst session he had ever had in his life, they were the rudest people, they wouldn’t sit long enough. Then I saw the picture, and it was a great picture. I learned there was no reason not to get a great picture, you’re a professional. I find that professionalism leaves more room for creativity. The more disciplined I am with my working relationships, the more productive I can become. -

Interview with director Russell Mulcahy about the "Gypsy" video:

The big-budget video features a shot of the band's Stevie Nicks dancing on the edge of a cliff, created using a matte painting. A matte painting is where an artist paints a background on glass, and then the camera films action through the glass, creating the illusion that the actors are part of the painted background.
However, Mulcahy says "someone forgot to bring the piece of glass" for the shoot, which he recalls took place at the former A&M Studios (now the Henson Soundstage) in Hollywood. "So … someone took a window pane out of a makeup room and we painted on that, and put the window back, with the painting still on it. I'm not sure whether the paint is still on it [today]. But if it is, I should get it onto eBay."

During an interview Monday to promote O'Reilly's new book, Killing Patton, Le Batard started the Fox News anchor off with a few softball questions. They covered O'Reilly's days as a pitcher, growing up with Billy Joel on Long Island (really), what kind of music gets him to dance (Fleetwood Mac, if you were wondering). But when Le Batard asked O'Reilly what moments in his career bring him "shame" or cause him "unrest," O’Reilly had a minor meltdown.

Eagles members sue 'bootlegger' for allegedly screening unlicensed footage

William Shelley, who apparently held ticketed screenings of films featuring the Eagles, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd, is accused of violating copyright

Members of the Eagles are suing a man who has spent years showing rare bootlegs of some of the world’s most famous musical artists. William Shelley, who has held public events screening unreleased footage by acts like the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd, is accused of violating copyright and breaking US anti-bootlegging laws.

Don Henley and Glenn Frey filed their lawsuit in Brooklyn federal court, seeking unspecified damages from Shelley and his company, Shelley Archives. They allege the Long Island resident used his collection of films to falsely “bolster his reputation as a purported music industry ‘insider’ with close connections and ties to many classic rock greats,” the New York Daily News reported, and accused him of becoming rich from the unauthorised use of their work.

According to their official bio, the Shelley Archives owns more than 100,000 reels of 35mm and 16mm films, amounting to more than 10,000 hours of rare concerts, television shows, promos, interviews, outtakes and home movies. “Preservation of films and music clips is the main focus of the organization,” they said. Shelley himself began shooting concert films in the 1970s, filming acts such as Twisted Sister and Joan Jett. He claims to have befriended members of Public Enemy during their early days as Spectrum City, earning the nickname Dollar Bill.

More recently, Shelley has presented events like Fleetwood Mac: Rare Performances 1960s-1980s and The Rolling Stones 1964-1975: The Brian Jones and Mick Taylor Years. These ticketed screenings usually combined unreleased music footage with Shelley-hosted question and answer sessions.

Lawyers for Henley and Frey say they sent Shelley a cease-and-desist order regarding an October screening where unlicensed Eagles footage was allegedly shown to a Connecticut crowd. Shelley purportedly “refused” the musicians’ demands, prompting the federal lawsuit. They are now asking the court to seize Shelley’s entire film archive.

Henley and the Eagles are notoriously litigious when it comes to their music copyrights. In the past five years, Henley has sued or threatened to sue Frank Ocean, Okkervil River and a Republican candidate for the US Senate over their unauthorised use of his songs. “They don’t understand the law,” Henley told Sydney’s Daily Telegraph.

The Eagles have sold more than 150m albums worldwide, making them one of the richest musical acts of all time.

Let me show you this one accessible track you might like but no biggie if not.” Instead of being all like, “The Story So Far are ****, The Descendents invented pop-punk. Dolly Parton sparkles on top

Our Dolly’s still got it…

The sparkling, pint-sized, country queen Dolly Parton was voted your favourite pop music moment of 2014. Beating the likes of bright young things Taylor Swift and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Parton’s terrifically camp performance at this year’s Glastonbury festival has come out on top.

Parton’s set on the Pyramid stage which involved a shed load of rhinestones, multiple cans of hairspray and a whole lot of “can I get an amen?” simply whipped us into a frenzy. We couldn’t get 9 to 5 out of our heads for days...

The poll, commissioned by blinkbox Music, also reveals the legendary Fleetwood Mac’s reunion was voted the second best musical moment. Sam Smith’s emotional rendition of Stay With Me at the MTV Video Music Awards wins third place, and Kate Bush’s comeback gigs at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire lands her the fourth spot on the poll.

But the U.S. and Cuba's government have been building cultural bridges for years. Kornbluh points to a 1999 independent cultural exchange program: "The Cuban government hosted something called Puentes musicales, 'musical bridges,' in which a whole bunch of artists went down," he says. "Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac was there. Bonnie Raitt was there."

2015 A-Z Classic Rock Preview: Part One
by Nick DeRiso

A new year promises plenty of new music, from the studio and out on the road. Here’s part one of our comprehensive, alphabetical 2015 forecast for your favorite classic rock artists — detailing what they’ve been up to, and what’s next. In this edition, we survey AC/DC through Fleetwood Mac.

AC/DC

AC/DC have already confirmed 22 dates in 2015 in support of their new album 'Rock or Bust,' with shows beginning in May. The record, AC/DC's first since 2008's 'Black Ice,' arrived amid news of Malcolm Young's retirement. Still unclear, however, is drummer Phil Rudd's role in these upcoming shows. He said he plans to return to the group, despite some serious legal issues. Also up in the air: whether AC/DC will perform at Glastonbury. Their tour schedule leaves room for an appearance.

Aerosmith

Between touring behind 2012's 'Music From Another Dimension!' and various outside projects -- from Joe Perry's autobiography and Christmas EP to Steven Tyler's multi-year stint on 'American Idol' -- it's been a busy period for Aerosmith. This year promises some down time, as Perry confirmed in an exclusive talk with Ultimate Classic Rock. There are loose plans for some summer dates, he said, but so far only one July concert has been confirmed. Perry could possibly squeeze in some solo shows late in 2015, too. Meanwhile, Joey Kramer had a health scare in 2014, forcing the cancellation of some summer shows, but he's since returned to full strength.

Gregg Allman

The Allman Brothers Band said goodbye with an epic Beacon show in October, drawing four decades of music to a close following the departures of guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. Still, leader Gregg Allman remains a stalwart figure on the concert trail, and has more than a dozen confirmed dates for 2015, with 10 of them in January alone. Meanwhile, Haynes just celebrated 20 years with his band Gov't Mule, releasing a Pink Floyd tribute album, and Trucks is promising more music from his Tedeschi Trucks Band.

Jeff Beck

Jeff Beck has already given fans a taste of new, never-before-released material as part of November's 'Live in Tokyo' set, and his first studio album since 2010's 'Emotion and Commotion' is set to follow in 2015. Beck will also return to the road with ZZ Top, after their 2014 tour was put on hold after Dusty Hill was injured on his tour bus. Beck already has nearly 20 shows lined up for 2015, beginning in April.

Black Sabbath

A rejuvenated Black Sabbath, fresh off their 2013 smash hit '13,' plan another studio album and tour -- with both slated to be their last. Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler have spoken openly about their hopes to finish on a high note alongside Tony Iommi, who's rebounded from a cancer scare. Osbourne hinted that producer Rick Rubin would be on board again, as well. Not much is known beyond that, though Osbourne -- who will also tour without Sabbath alongside Judas Priest and Motorhead -- says sessions will begin "sooner rather than later."

Bon Jovi

We know one thing Jon Bon Jovi won't be doing in 2015: owning an NFL team, after his controversial bid to purchase the Buffalo Bills fell short. Meanwhile, if he hits the road again with Bon Jovi, it will almost certainly be without the departed Richie Sambora. A disagreement that led to the longtime guitarist's sudden departure in 2013 apparently remained unresolved late into 2014 -- with both camps saying it's time to move on. Sambora played a series of summer dates in Europe while Jon appeared in Vegas with the Kings of Suburbia. Keyboardist David Bryan also saw his stage production 'Memphis: The Musical' debut in London in 2014.

Boston

Boston didn't slow down after releasing 'Life, Love and Hope' late in 2013, playing an astounding 68 shows through summer 2014, and even teaming up with the Doobie Brothers on a series of well-received dates. Boston hadn't released a new album since 2002. Leader Tom Scholz spent the interim rebuilding Boston after the death of singer Brad Delp, whose final Boston sessions appeared on 'Life, Love and Hope.' A live, perhaps career-spanning, concert film could be next. "I still have countless recordings of Boston playing every possible song with numerous different arrangements live," Scholz told us. "It’s a very tantalizing thing to do."

David Bowie

David Bowie included a pair of new songs on a 2014 retrospective release, solidifying a stirring comeback that began with the unexpected release of 'The Next Day' in 2013, and hinting at a larger project to come in 2015 ... maybe. Not so fast, Bowie's camp cautioned, as 'Sue (Or in a Season Of Crime)' and ''Tis a Pity She Was a Whore' were part of the ‘Nothing Has Changed’ set. A new tour is just as uncertain as more new music -- though, as longtime producer Tony Visconti notes, you never know with the Thin White Duke. "I don't know and I couldn't predict that, it's up to him," Visconti says of Bowie, who hasn't appeared onstage in a decade. "It's whatever takes his fancy."

Cheap Trick

Fresh off a December appearance at the Vallarta-Nayarit Classic Rock Festival, the always-busy Cheap Trick have already announced 15 dates for 2015. "We play as much as we can," Rick Nielsen said in 2014. "No record? We go on tour. New record? On tour. Hit record? Flop record? Always tour." While there's been no mention of a new album from Cheap Trick, Nielsen appeared as a guest on the Foo Fighters' star-studded 'Sonic Highways,' and then joined them for a performance on 'The Late Show With David Letterman.'

Chickenfoot

The wait for a follow-up to Chickenfoot's 2011 album continues. That's the nature of having Sammy Hagar (who has a busy schedule of solo projects) and Chad Smith (also a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) in one lineup. They've often been ready to get back to work, but guitarist Joe Satriani has been elsewhere. And so it goes, save for several concert pairings of Hagar and Michael Anthony -- and a notable appearance of the full band at Hagar's birthday concert in October. For his part, however, Satriani isn't ready to give up on Chickenfoot just yet. "We're trying to get our priorities straight, and we probably never will," he says. "But I do think there's a couple more records in there somehow."

Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton announced plans in 2014 to quit the road, even though he still intends to record. Up next? Perhaps a second tribute project to friend JJ Cale, some all-new material or, he says, perhaps both. Unfortunately, any hopes for a rerun of 2005's Cream reunion evaporated with the death of bandmate Jack Bruce last year. Clapton led a musical farewell in his honor; he also released a song called 'For Jack,' Clapton's first new music since 2013's 'Old Sock.' As for performing, Clapton says he might do one-off shows, but he doesn't plan on any more major tours.

Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper continued building on his own towering legend with a series of 2014 dates opening for Motley Crue ... and he occasionally one-upped the main attraction. He'll stay on the road into the new year, having already announced a dozen dates in the U.S. and Europe for the Raise the Dead tour. Cooper hasn't released a new studio album since 2011's 'Welcome 2 My Nightmare,' though he contributed an update of the Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby' to the recent tribute album to Paul McCartney and released a terrific concert DVD. And his long-awaited 'Hollywood Vampires' covers record could finally see the light of day in 2015.

Crosby, Stills and Nash

As with Alice Cooper, CSN's covers project might finally come to fruition in 2015. But get used to seeing Crosby, Stills and Nash without Neil Young. A sprawling 'CSNY 1974' set, released in 2014, served as a stirring reminder of their success as a quartet. But then Young and David Crosby had another falling out, this time over comments Crosby made about Young's love life -- and that appears to have severed their musical partnership for good. That said, CSN have been touring without Young consistently since 2006, including a string of well-received dates this past fall. They've already confirmed seven concerts in Japan, beginning in March.

Deep Purple

Deep Purple spent the year consolidating momentum after storming back to relevance with 2013's 'Now What?!' That meant scores of live shows -- including a rare set of U.S. stops -- and the release of a live DVD. Next are more than 20 European concerts set for 2015. They've also begun work on a follow-up to 'Now What?!,' and plan to once again work with producer Bob Ezrin. "He really enjoyed making the record with us, so it’s a no-brainer really that we’re going to do it again," Roger Glover tells us. "I think that will probably be out sometime next year." Deep Purple also took part in an emotional farewell concert for late member Jon Lord. The show was released as a deluxe set in September.

Def Leppard

Def Leppard wrapped up 2014 with the elements of a new album in place, despite a difficult period of health problems for guitarist Vivian Campbell. Singer Joe Elliott was expected to put the finishing touches on the project early in the new year, with a release date for Def Leppard's first album since 2008's 'Songs From the Sparkle Lounge' to be determined. Meanwhile, Def Leppard toured with Kiss and performed in the opening ceremonies of an NFL game in London, with Trixter's Steve Brown filling in for Campbell. They'll begin a string of Canadian dates in April, then hit Europe beginning in May.

Doobie Brothers

The Doobie Brothers will once again team up with some big-name guests in 2015, beginning with String Cheese Incident at the 2015 Lockn Festival. The appearance, called the Doobie Incident, arrives on the heels of 'Southbound,' a multi-artist collaboration featuring some of country's top stars. The album included Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald and Patrick Simmons' first appearance on a Doobie Brothers album since 1978's 'Minute by Minute.' New tour dates begin in February, and include bills with Alice Cooper and War.

Bob Dylan

A career full of surprising twists will take another surprising turn in 2015 as Bob Dylan issues an album of standards associated with Frank Sinatra. Set for release in February, 'Shadows in the Night' features a cover of 'Full Moon and Empty Arms,' which Dylan began streaming on his website in October. He's coming off another busy year of touring, which unfolded even as 'The Basement Tapes Complete' -- a comprehensive look back at his fabled 1967 recordings with the Band -- arrived in stores. Dylan completed his 2014 run with five-night stand in early December at the Beacon Theatre in New York City; no other dates have been confirmed yet.

Eagles

The Eagles stayed busy on the road in 2014 (well, when they weren't filing lawsuits about this or that). Nothing surprising there. But Joe Walsh revealed that the Eagles might be inching closer to their first studio release since 2007's 'Long Road Out of Eden.' "We've got some stuff in the can," he said, before reeling off his own plans for a blues-focused solo effort. The group's 'History of the Eagles' tour heads to Australia in February, followed by questions about how many more of these globe-crossing jaunts they have left in them.

Electric Light Orchestra

Jeff Lynne reignited Electric Light Orchestra for a September performance at London's Hyde Park. Despite some pre-show jitters, he now says there are bigger things on the way. There could be both new music and a full-fledged tour in 2015. “I’m working on a new album, and that’ll be involved in the new times when we play,” said Lynne, who returned to the stage with ELO keyboardist Richard Tandy.

Fleetwood Mac

For fans of Fleetwood Mac's classic-era lineup, 2014's return of Christine McVie was a dream come true -- and 2015 promises still more. Putting aside a lengthy retirement, McVie began working on new music with Lindsey Buckingham before returning to concert halls with the group. This as-yet-unnamed new project, slated for completion in 2015, will be the first to feature the complete 'Rumours' lineup since 1987's 'Tango in the Night.' Stevie Nicks also released the solo '24 Karat Gold', new recordings of some of her old unrecorded songs. Fleetwood Mac have at least 30 more shows lined up for 2015.

2014 Tour of the Year – 4th Annual Ultimate Classic Rock Awards
by Dave Lifton January 7, 2015 5:01 PM

The 4th Annual Ultimate Classic Rock Awards for 2014’s Tour of the Year features many of the biggest acts ever to grace a concert stage, like Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and the Allman Brothers Band. Some of them, like Kiss with Def Leppard or ZZ Top with Jeff Beck, offered concertgoers double the firepower for the evening. You can vote below for Tour of the Year.

Aerosmith / Slash

The Let Rock Rule tour paired Aerosmith with Slash, which recalled the time Guns N’ Roses opened for Aerosmith in 1988. In the days leading up to the announcement, Joe Perry teased the tour by spray-painting several walls in Los Angeles. Together, they played 21 dates in sheds across North America over the summer.

Allman Brothers Band

Rock’s definitive road warriors, the Allman Brothers Band, decided to call it quits shortly after guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks announced that they would leave at the end of 2014. But they went out in style, with a string of dates at their second home, New York’s Beacon Theatre, concluding with a three-set show that was broadcast over satellite radio. Their final tour also took them to Mountain Jam, where they performed their first two albums — ‘The Allman Brothers Band’ and ‘Idlewild South’ — in their entirety.

Fleetwood Mac

One of the most welcome sights of a classic rock tour in 2014 was the return of Christine McVie to Fleetwood Mac for the first time since 1998. The reunion, which was sparked by her sitting in with the band in London in 2013, resulted in 34 shows at the end of 2014. It has been so well-received that they have extended the tour through spring.

John Fogerty

Perhaps it was a way of making up for all those years that he refused to play Creedence Clearwater Revival songs, but in 2014, John Fogerty embraced his past like never before. He spent much of the second half of the year celebrating the 45th anniversary of the band's most productive year. He toured the U.S. and Canada, focusing on material from the three albums Creedence released in 1969, ‘Bayou Country,’ ‘Green River’ and ‘Willy and the Poor Boys.’ He has announced plans to bring the same show to the rest of the world in 2015.

Foreigner / Styx / Don Felder

The Soundtrack of Summer tour, which packaged Foreigner, Styx and former Eagles guitarist Don Felder, crisscrossed the U.S. from mid-May through late-July. Felder opened each show, with the other two switching spots on a nightly basis. The tour gained national headlines in Philadelphia when two of the tour buses caught fire while in a parking lot. They thanked the Philadelphia Fire Department by donating $10,000 to the department’s Widows Fund.

Sammy Hagar

Never one to sit around for too long, Sammy Hagar grabbed old buddy Michael Anthony, Waboritas guitarist Vic Johnson and drummer Jason Bonham and took fans on 'A Journey through the History of Rock.’ The show touched on Hagar’s entire career — Montrose, solo, Van Halen and Chickenfoot — and, thanks to Bonham’s involvement, a handful of Led Zeppelin tunes.

Judas Priest / Steel Panther

Judas Priest’s first album in six years, ‘Redeemer of Souls,’ saw them replace longtime guitarist K.K. Downing with Richie Faulkner without missing a beat. Along with NSFW metal band Steel Panther, they spent October and November bringing what Rob Halford called an “incredible metal night” to more than 30 cities across America, including a stop in Brooklyn that we caught. Priest already have dates booked worldwide through Aug. 1, 2015.

Kiss / Def Leppard

Once again, Kiss’ summer tour saw them bring another heavyweight band on the road with them. With Def Leppard opening, the nine-week, 40-date jaunt across North American found Kiss, as they’ve done in the past, donate one dollar from every ticket sold to assorted charities that benefit military families. We saw them in August at a show that also included the Dead Daisies, a band comprised of veterans of such bands as Guns N’ Roses, INXS and Whitesnake.

Paul McCartney

After a handful of spring shows in South America, Paul McCartney’s 2014 hit a snag. A virus landed him in the hospital, forcing him to cancel an entire week of dates in Asia and postpone the start of his U.S. tour. But he rebounded by repeatedly delivering marathon concerts with his customary enthusiasm. The tour reached a poignant note in August when he played the final event at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, the same spot as the Beatles’ last-ever concert on Aug. 29, 1966.

Motley Crue / Alice Cooper

Motley Crue began 2014 by announcing their ‘Final Tour,’ complete with tombstones, a jazz funeral procession and even signing a legally binding ‘Cessation of Touring Agreement’ at the press conference. As befits the macabre tone, they invited Alice Cooper along as their opening act. Tommy Lee unveiled a new drum roller coaster, the Cruecifly, that was so big, it couldn’t even be performed at some venues. We’re not sure exactly when it will end -- we’ve heard New Year’s Eve, but then Vince Neil said he hopes that their last-ever show will be Jan. 17, 2016, which will be their 35th anniversary.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers / Steve Winwood

‘Hypnotic Eye,’ Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ first album since 2010’s ‘Mojo,’ was supported by a nine-week tour from early August to early October in cities across North America, including a late-August stop at Boston’s Fenway Park. Opening up for Petty on all dates was Steve Winwood.

Queen Adam Lambert

After years of one-off dates and shows in Europe, Queen + Adam Lambert finally brought their live experience to North America. This past summer, they played 19 shows in 18 cities in the U.S. and Canada over the course of a month. They ended 2014 by playing a high-profile New Year’s Eve show at London’s Westminster Central Hall that was broadcast on the BBC.

Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones weren’t kidding when they called their 2012 return to the road 50 and Counting. Their 14 on Fire tour took them to three continents. Unfortunately, the Australia and New Zealand leg was twice derailed, first with the death of L’Wren Scott, Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, and one of the rescheduled dates was canceled when Jagger picked up a throat infection.

Bruce Springsteen

After spending the first part of the year in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Bruce Springsteen brought his tour in support of ‘High Hopes’ to the U.S. It was a brief run for Springsteen, with only 15 shows in five weeks during the spring. But the concerts, one of which we saw in Nashville, still blended newer songs and old favorites with his trademark intensity. He also threw in plenty of covers by acts as diverse as the Clash, AC/DC, the Bee Gees and Lorde.

ZZ Top / Jeff Beck

Another tantalizing tour for classic rock fans paired ZZ Top and Jeff Beck. Their shows became noteworthy when the two acts combined forces in the encore for some guitar-based fireworks. Unfortunately, an injury to Dusty Hill forced ZZ Top to bow out of the last 13 shows, but they rescheduled several of those dates for 2015.

These are the nominees for 2014 Tour of the Year. Voting ends Feb. 3, 2015, at 9AM ET. You can vote once per hour, so be sure to come back and make sure your favorite wins.

John Aniston of 'Days of Our Lives' sells Bell Canyon house

John Aniston, a mainstay of “Days of Our Lives” for decades, has sold a house in the gated equestrian community of Bell Canyon for $1.42 million..

He bought the 1988 Mediterranean-style home about a decade ago from bass guitarist John McVie of Fleetwood Mac for $1.399 million.

The 1.52-acre property affords a sense of privacy with mature trees, an expansive lawn and unobstructed city, canyon and mountain views.

Inside, a two-story entry, topped by a beamed ceiling, contains a floating-style staircase. Among living spaces in the 4,466 square feet are a formal dining room with a coffered ceiling, an entertainment room with arched windows and a family room with a wet bar and fireplace.

The master suite includes a sitting room with fireplace and a built-in entertainment center for a total of five bedrooms and five bathrooms. French doors open to a wrap-around balcony.

The grounds include waterfalls, a grotto-style swimming pool and a stone deck.

Aniston, 81, started on the daytime soap opera in the mid-1980s. He is the father of actress Jennifer Aniston.

[From an article on Jill Focke, fashion designer]

Click to Houston, January 25, 2015 by Dominique Sachse,

http://www.click2houston.com/news/houston-women-make-designs-for-celebrities/30889264

Houston fashion designer Jill Focke is living every girl's rock and roll dream. Currently on tour with Fleetwood Mac, Focke's fashion career started with a call from Bette Midler's costume designer inviting her to join Midler's tour in 1993. From there, her career took off.

"I'm a traveling wardrobe supervisor for different rock and roll bands. I've worked for Bette Midler, Fleetwood Mac, the Backstreet Boys, Miley Cyrus, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Lenny Kravitz," said Focke.

Focke's job is to prevent wardrobe malfunctions from happening while the performers are on stage.

"There was a time where I was working for the Backstreet Boys and the designer had picked out this beautiful Armani shirt for one of the guys, but it was a very light-weight gauze fabric," Focke said. "So six shows a week, sweating profusely, the thing was just in shreds. I just went and bought some fabric, made him a couple extra shirts.

"He goes, 'You made this?' I'm like, 'Yeah, that's kind of what I do,' and he goes, 'Can you make me some for my own life?'" So that was a nice compliment."

Freede knows all about those "compliments" from celebrities can actually translate into sales. One of her other fans is Rihanna. Freede even has a chain necklace with crystals that is now affectionately dubbed, "The Rihanna Necklace."

"They can have a piece that Rihanna has for under $50," said Freede of her mainstream customers who too enjoy the same designs as celebrities.

Freede's work has appeared in the pages of Vogue, O Magazine, Glamour and In-Style, but she has not forgotten the mainstream customer either. Her items can be found on her website LisaFreede.com and at NeimanMarcus.com, and also in store at Tootsies.

"It makes me feel just as excited when Sue Smith or my mother call me up and say, 'Lisa, that's one of my most special pieces,'" said Freede.

When asked why she prefers to live in Houston over Los Angeles or New York, Freede said there's something familiar about Houston.

"I compare it to my life in Detroit where I was relaxed and I could be creative and be me," Freede said. "I didn't have to get dressed up and I don't when I'm here. And as a designer, my ideas are in my head. So, I chose to be here."

Freede plans to expand her brand over the next few years to include hair accessories, hand bags and belts. She is also very excited about two new upcoming projects, including one with Martha Stewart to create a line made in America.

The other upcoming project will allow her to join forces once again with R&B star Tionne, of TLC. The two met years ago when Freede worked as stylist for the group and have remained friends over the years.

With the recent announcement of TLC's tour with New Kids on The Block and Nelly, there was no question about who would style Tionne's jewelry for the tour. Of course, her old friend, Freede.

For more information on Focke's designs, visit her Facebook page at J. Ellen Designs.

Omaha-based Acass Systems is revolutionizing staging for live music

Co-founder Cass designs staging components to custom specifications for artists. For example, Acass Systems was responsible for the riser on which Mick Fleetwood’s drum kit was set up for Fleetwood Mac’s tour that stopped in Lincoln on Jan. 17. The firm also designed the support structure on which the stage-width LED display was mounted.

Who Should Perform at the Super Bowl Instead of Katy Perry?
by Nick DeRiso

We can now definitively say that The period between 2001-10 was the golden era of Super Bowl halftime shows. After all, a whopping seven out of 10 performers were drawn from the classic-rock era, starting with Aerosmith and continuing through U2, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and the Who.
Since then? Not so much. Katy Perry, who’ll perform this week during Super Bowl XLIX at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., continues a more recent trend toward pop music that’s included artists like the Black Eyed Peas, Bruno Mars and Beyonce.
Who would you rather instead?
Legacy groups that have recently put out new material like AC/DC, Kiss or Van Halen? Or what about someone with local flavor like Alice Cooper — who went to high school, and started his music career, in the area? What about Judas Priest, whose frontman Rob Halford has been a resident of Paradise Valley, Ariz., for three decades? Yes and Poison also have members with ties to Arizona.
Or would you go bigger, with long-hoped-for reunions of the remaining members of Led Zeppelin or the original lineup of Guns N’ Roses? Maybe Fleetwood Mac, whose Stevie Nicks used to live in Arizona? Something more patriotic, like heartland rockers Bob Seger or Bon Jovi? Or sentimental, like Rush or Motley Crue — both of whom are apparently winding down their touring days?
The choice is yours. We picked some of our favorite classic-rock artists who’ve yet to play the big game. Vote now for which one you’d rather see on Sunday Bowl Sunday.

Howard Stern played The Chain on his radio show yesterday. He then spent some time talking about how I think Gary and somebody else went and that it was amazing and how he saw them a few years ago at some private gig. Robin asked him if he met any of them and he said it wasn't the type of thing where you could just go up to them. Howard said there was a Stevie song that really gets him emotionally but he couldn't remember what it was said it was a solo song. Robin read him a lot of solo song names and he was like nah that's not it and then mentioned it was a b side. I am sure it was Silver Springs and he got confused -ha!
I would love for Howard to interview Stevie. He is such a great interviewer and has a way of getting information out of his guests without being obnoxious and he has toned it way down as well.

I'm part of the leather community here in Los Angeles. We have a bunch of contests during the year that are like, well, if you can imagine a gay leather version of Mrs. America. Occasionally I am an emcee for some of the contests. Yes, I am the LA kinky gay Burt Parks. Anyway, last Saturday night I was co-emcee for a contest in a bar out in Long Beach called Pistons, it was the Mr. Pistons Leather contest. A good friend of mine was in the audience who is also a huge Stevie fan (and how lucky am I that I have another Stevie Fanatic to geek out with) so I told him that at some point during the night I was going to throw a Stevie lyric into the show somewhere. So during the first section I looked at my co-emcee and I said, "you know, all five of these guys are too good. I'm glad not a judge because I just can't pick a winner. Why can't we give them all medals, I mean, why does someone always have to win?"

And out in the crowd one person laughed and I knew my friend got the joke.

Next month I'm doing an even bigger contest, and my friend will be there. So now I need to figure out a way to sneak in a really good line just to see if he's paying attention. :)

You could sneak it about a really good contestant that doesn't deserves to lose but have to lose anyway because you already chose the perfect Mr. Pistons (I love this name).

Hear Rockabye Baby! Version of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Don’t Stop’ – Exclusive Premiere
by Jeff Giles February 5, 2015 9:11 AM

<iframe width="630" height="354" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/fk0kVj1RqWE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Fleetwood Mac could reach a whole new generation of fans this month without even trying.
The band is being honored with their own installment of the wildly popular Rockabye Baby! series, which has soundtracked nurseries around the globe with gentle instrumental versions of hits by artists as varied as the Beatles, Kanye West, Madonna, and Guns N’ Roses. ‘Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Fleetwood Mac’ arrives Feb. 10, and you can check out the new, toddler-approved version of the band’s classic ‘Don’t Stop’ via the video embed above.
The Mac’s ‘Lullaby Renditions’ disc leans heavily on the group’s blockbuster ’70s period, which brought Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks into the fold and produced the landmark ‘Rumours‘ LP — but instead of that album’s layered, immaculately produced sound, it relies on what a press release describes as “a soothing palate of xylophones, marimbas, wood blocks, bells and more.”
Check it out above, and take a look at the complete track listing below. The album is available for pre-order now for the budding Fleetwood Mac fan in your home.

10 Bands that Influenced my Life

Fleetwood Mac. I don’t remember the first time I heard that sound but the voice of Stevie Nicks has always taken hold of me and drawn me near. I have had many discussions with others over the years, Dave Schmidt being one. We all agree that Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks is one of those bands that covers all generations. Their sound is a one of a kind jam that makes you want to sing and let loose. Nick’s voice is the bar that all other female singers try to reach. A smoky, soulful sound that makes any song better.

I find it really amusing that a Fleetwood Mac song is present both in the best Love songs and Anti-Love songs:

Top 10 Love Songs
by Michael Gallucci

Love songs have been around ever since people starting writing songs. After all, it’s a universal subject. But to make our list of the Top 10 Love Songs, cuts had to, well, cut deep into our hearts, saying things that might be a bit difficult to put into our own words (and you don’t even want to hear the melodies we’d attach those words to). And it just so happens that some of our all-time favorite artists are behind these eternal love songs. So cuddle up next to your sweetie and check it out.

10
‘You’re My Best Friend’
Queen

From: 'A Night at the Opera' (1975)
Queen bassist John Deacon wrote ‘You’re My Best Friend’ for his wife, but its heartfelt message of love makes it one of the band's most enduring, and universal, songs. It's also one of the most straightforward songs in the group's catalog, featuring a winning vocal by Freddie Mercury and a bouncy Wurlitzer (played by Deacon) driving the melody. It followed 'Bohemian Rhapsody' into the Top 20.

9
‘You Make Loving Fun’
Fleetwood Mac

From: 'Rumours' (1977)
Fleetwood Mac's monumental 'Rumours' album was brimming with relationship problems. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were ending theirs, and the marriage between John and Christine McVie was also on the rocks. It all made for one of the greatest breakup albums ever created. But there was some hope in Christine McVie's 'You Make Loving Fun,' written about her affair with the band's lighting director. John probably loved playing this one night after night ...

8
‘Just the Way You Are’
Billy Joel

From: 'The Stranger' (1977)
Billy Joel wrote 'Just the Way You Are' for his wife, who was also his manager at the time. After they divorced, he resisted playing the song in concert and insisted he never really liked it. Hard to believe, since it helped break Joel commercially after he spent the first two-thirds of the '70s struggling as both a live performer and a recording artist. It ended up as one of the decade's quintessential love songs.

7
‘In Your Eyes’
Peter Gabriel

From: 'So' (1986)
Even before John Cusack lifted that boombox over his head in 'Say Anything ...,' Peter Gabriel's 'In Your Eyes' was a pretty great love song. On an album filled with sweeping, timeless tracks, 'So''s original side-two opener stands out for a number of reasons. It features one of Gabriel's best-ever vocals, for starters, and its hook builds over a graceful five and a half minutes. Plus, Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour provides some soaring relief on the chorus. One of the '80s' best love songs.

6
'Thank You'
Led Zeppelin

From: 'Led Zeppelin II' (1969)
The mere thought of a love song written by the guys who delivered the hammer of the gods to hundreds of groupies sounds ludicrous. But there, buried on their great second album, is Robert Plant's lovely valentine to his wife. "If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you / When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me" -- pretty heavy stuff, even if it's not quite as epic as the Tolkien fantasy worlds he often got lost in.

5
'Wild Horses'
The Rolling Stones

From: 'Sticky Fingers' (1971)
Even though it didn't crack the Top 25 as a single, 'Wild Horses' remains one of the Rolling Stones' most popular songs. It's certainly one of their greatest love songs, a mournful country-influenced number penned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The song showed up on the Stones' 1971 album 'Sticky Fingers,' but it wasn't the first version released. Richards' pal Gram Parsons covered the song on his band the Flying Burrito Brothers' album a year earlier. It's pretty good too.

4
‘Maybe I’m Amazed’
Paul McCartney

From: 'McCartney' (1970)
Paul McCartney's debut solo album from 1970 is filled with weird, fractured moments. Recorded while the Beatles were still a band, 'McCartney' plays more like a set of skeletal frames and early-stage song ideas than a collection of real tunes. The exception is this terrific ballad, which McCartney wrote for his wife Linda. Six years after its release, the song was issued as a single in a live version from the album 'Wings Over America,' becoming a Top 10 hit. One of McCartney's greatest (and least silly) love songs.

3
‘God Only Knows’
The Beach Boys

From: 'Pet Sounds' (1966)
Brian Wilson's greatest ballad anchors 'Pet Sounds,' the Beach Boys album that helped set the stage for both their creative rebirth and Wilson's descent into madness. It's a glorious love song that cascades over one of the most gorgeous melodies ever written. No wonder so many artists have covered 'God Only Knows' over the years. It's one of the 20th century's most remarkable musical achievements.

2
‘Your Song’
Elton John

From: 'Elton John' (1970)
Even with a few lyrical bumps ("If I was a sculptor, but then again, no ..." -- um, no), 'Your Song' is one of the purest expressions of love ever committed to song. Reportedly, John and Bernie Taupin wrote the song in less than 30 minutes, but its timeless appeal makes it one of the era's most enduring hits. It also became the first of John's long string of Top 10 singles.

1
'Something'
The Beatles

From: 'Abbey Road' (1969)
The Beatles' greatest love song, and one of their all-time best, 'Something' wasn't even written by the two guys responsible for most of their hits. George Harrison was inspired by fellow Apple Records' artist James Taylor's 'Something in the Way She Moves,' which gave the Beatles' song its opening line. Harrison claimed the song wasn't written for his wife at the time, remaining cagey about its subject throughout his life. Whomever it's about, 'Something' remains one of the greatest declarations of love ever written, and one of the most covered love songs of the past 50 years.

Top 10 Anti-Love Songs
by Annie Zaleski

New Line Cinema
As this list of the Top 10 Anti-Love Songs proves, Valentine’s Day is either a day to celebrate your significant other, or it’s your worst nightmare, if your relationship situation is not what you’d like it to be. The following songs are sympathetic to the latter scenario, whether they deal with scorned lovers, terrible breakups or anyone simply unlucky in love.

10
‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right’
Bob Dylan

From: ‘The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan’ (1963)
This oft-covered song is a folk classic -- and it’s also an early example of that classic biting Bob Dylan wit, making it one of our Top 10 Anti-Love Songs. Throughout the tune, the title phrase is interpreted as passive-aggressive, resigned and sad. By the end, however, Dylan delivers the phrase with more than a little bitterness: “I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind / You could have done better but I don't mind / You just kinda wasted my precious time / But don't think twice, it's all right.” Hell hath no fury like a bard scorned.
Hear 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right'

cover
9
‘So Lonely’
The Police

From: ‘Outlandos d'Amour’ (1978)
Look up the phrase “self-pitying” in the dictionary, and chances are the protagonist of this reggae-tinged song from the Police will be pictured. Need (melodramatic) proof? How about lyrics such as, “In this theatre that I call my soul / I always play the starring role, so lonely”? Or how about Sting’s anguished vamping on the titular phrase near the end of the tune? Either way, one (obvious) thing’s for sure: There’s no love present in the world of ‘So Lonely.’

8
‘You’re Breaking My Heart’
Harry Nilsson

From: ‘Son of Schmilsson’ (1972)
Harry Nilsson remains one of the most influential singer-songwriters around, and it’s easy to see why, judging by ‘You’re Breaking My Heart.’ The anger is palpable in this throes-of-a-breakup song, judging by the jarring profanity and descriptions of a violent breakup (e.g., broken glasses). As with other Nilsson tunes, however, this ire is delivered cheerfully, with rollicking piano and almost whimsical instrumentation setting a deceptively sweet tone.

7
‘I Hate Myself For Loving You’
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

From: ‘Up Your Alley’ (1988)
A Billboard Top 10 hit, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' ‘I Hate Myself For Loving You’ oozes with self-loathing. See, the main character is ticked because although her man is a flaky cheater, she “can’t break free from the things” he does. Even better are the song’s roaring arena riffs, splashy hand claps and wicked contributions from ex-Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, which combine for a bubblegum-rock gem.

6
‘You’re No Good’
Van Halen

From: ‘Van Halen II’ (1979)
Made famous by Linda Ronstadt in 1975, ‘You’re No Good’ turned into a hard rock creeper in the hands of Van Halen. The first track on ‘Van Halen II,’ this cover smolders with stoner riffs, ominous harmonies and David Lee Roth squeals. While it’s inarguable that the person discussed is a dud as a date, Van Halen’s sleazy version clearly wants to make sure listeners realize just how bad this person truly is.

5
‘Love Stinks’
J. Geils Band

From: ‘Love Stinks’ (1980)
J. Geils and Co. are pragmatic about romance -- after all, it just “stinks,” not anything more serious, and it’s ended up that way because the protagonist is pining after a lady who doesn’t even love him back. That approach meshes well with the song’s loopy organ, pub-drunk harmonies and rather cartoonish intonations of the song’s title, “Love stinks.” In the end, Geils isn’t heartbroken -- he’s merely shrugging his shoulders.

4
‘What It Takes’
Aerosmith

From: ‘Pump’ (1989)
Steven Tyler spends this spawling Aerosmith song trying desperately to shake off the dogged memory of an ex. “Girl, before I met you, I was F-I-N-E, fine / But your love made me a prisoner, yeah, my heart’s been doing time,” he moans in the second verse, which is tame when compared to the pleading chorus: “Tell me what it takes to let you go / Tell me how the pain’s supposed to go.” ‘What It Takes’ hits the mark musically as well, between its bluesy bar-band swagger, sorrow-wobbled solo and tiny dab of pop glitz -- making it one of our Top 10 Anti-Love Songs.

3
‘Go Your Own Way’
Fleetwood Mac

From: ‘Rumours’ (1977)
The Lindsey Buckingham-Stevie Nicks romantic drama was well in progress by the time Fleetwood Mac's ‘Rumours’ came out. One of the best -- if not the most enduring -- documents of that saga is this Buckingham-penned tune, ‘Go Your Own Way.’ The song’s lyrics capture the bittersweet push-pull of a relationship that’s not quite balanced - a situation made all the more poignant (and complicated) by the fact that the doomed pair are bandmates.

2
‘Love Bites’
Def Leppard

From: ‘Hysteria’ (1987)
Def Leppard’s only Billboard singles chart-topper is an emotionally conflicted power ballad. On the one hand, the song describes irresistible magnetism: “I don't wanna touch you too much baby / 'Cause making love to you might drive me crazy.” But if you read between the lines, ‘Love Bites’ is actually a fatal attraction: “Watch out, love bites /Yes it does / It will be hell.” Mutt Lange’s gigantic production only magnifies the song’s drama, from Joe Elliott’s tortured vocal turn to the gargantuan guitars.

1
‘Love Hurts’
Nazareth

From: ‘Hair Of The Dog’ (1975)
Love shouldn’t be painful, right? Wrong, say Nazareth in this monstrous 1975 hit, which tops our list of the Top 10 Anti-Love Songs. Love is a total bitch: It hurts, it scars, it burns, it’s a lie -- heck, it’s even a rain-filled cloud. Frontman Dan McCafferty underscores the emotion’s putrid nature with his agony-twisted vocals, while the song’s understated guitar noodling and drumming get out of his way - as if intuitively understanding that this catharsis is something McCafferty needs to achieve on his own.

Rock Stars Who Dated

Rock has always dealt with the complexities of love, but as our gallery of Rock Stars Who Dated shows, sometimes, it gets personal. Click through for a sampling of couples that turned their passion for music into a passion for one another.
In some cases (as with Blondie, Wings and Pat Benatar), these relationships provide a foundation for every success that followed. For others (Fleetwood Mac, for instance), the act of breaking up seemed to work as a creative catalyst. Some stood the test of time (John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Talking Heads‘ rhythm section), while others give us hope for making it work in a modern era (Bruce Springsteen). Then there are some that never made any sense in the first place (hello there, Gregg Allman and Cher).

Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, friends since high school, were dating when they joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975. Their subsequent breakup helped spark the band's biggest-ever album, 'Rumours.'

[interview with Jorma Kaukonen]

http://www.boulderweekly.com/article-14004-putting-down-another.html

“But really for me,” he continues, “the exciting stuff as a band — aside from the hits that got us into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — was what we did on stage. We were all experimenting, a lot of stuff was happening. To be able to [continually] create that excitement was hard. No disrespect to anyone, but we didn’t have a string of hits like the Eagles or Fleetwood Mac. They got to just play their songs. To me, our [Airplane] songs were about the interaction. There’s the personality of it, and I believe that can’t be replicated.

From an article about romantic mixed tapes:

DIY Mag, 2-14/2005

http://diymag.com/2015/02/14/the-romantic-mixtape-from-hell

The Beatles have the same effect – there’s not a single Beatles song you could put on this that wouldn’t be ultimately wrong, and that’s not because they’re bad, it’s just because it’s super predictable. They’ve gone from being obvious, to being sort of hip again, then back to being obvious. It’s the trajectory Fleetwood Mac are on just now; they’ll be back in your Uncle’s record collection, gathering dust, by 2016.

[Lady Antebellum on why they won't be FM]

by Alison Bonaguro 2/27/2015 CMT

http://www.cmt.com/news/1751038/why-lady-a-will-never-be-fleetwood-mac/

At one of the many panels at this week’s Country Radio Seminar in Nashville, Lady Antebellum had chance to share their secret for getting along. The presentation was titled “How 3 Become 1: Lady Antebellum.”

And one of the biggest lessons they’ve learned in their nine years as a successful country band is how not to end up like Fleetwood Mac.

Lady A’s Dave Haywood admitted he, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott decided early on that this kind of infighting wouldn’t happen to them.

“We’ve all seen that on Behind the Music, but we decided we’re not gonna do that,” he said of Fleetwood Mac’s reputation for their members’ tumultuous relationships on and off the stage. “If we’re gonna do this, it has to be where we love doing it, we love each other, we respect each other.”

Kelley added his perspective on how they all stay so conflict-free.

“Everybody has different backgrounds in how they approach conflict and communication,” he said. “I tend to say what’s on my mind. Dave soaks up everything, and after everybody says their peace, he says something clever. Hillary’s somewhere in the middle.

“If you’re working as a team, everybody has a different process. Let people be who they are.”

And Scott, who doesn’t seem like she has a mean bone in her body, talked about the way she stays calm, cool and collected even when she might be a little fightin’ mad.

“In any work situation, there are parts of you that you have to temper down every now and then,” she said. “You don’t want continuous flare-ups. You have to be together a lot. Do you want to be right or be happy?”

TMH: Do you have any fun behind-the-scenes stories from filming that you can share?

NF: No not really, we just have a laugh. It’s not like there is one thing and we all have a laugh. Literally everyday we have just great fun. We got taken to see Fleetwood Mac one night in Berlin only because they did a four hour set and I know only one Fleetwood Mac song. About an hour in I whispered to Dave Franco ‘maybe we should leave,’ but Vince caught us trying to leave and we had to stay there for the rest of the concert.

London Grammar's new music is "a cross between Pocahontas and Fleetwood Mac"

Australian tour favourites London Grammar are currently doing another lap of the country in support of debut album If You Wait but revealed to triple j they've been plotting a follow-up.

Speaking to Matt and Alex on Breakfast today, vocalist Hannah Reid revealed there's fresh tunes in the pipeline.

"We've got some new music; we've got quite a lot actually," she said.

"We can't really play it right now but you guys will probably be one of the first to know, I'm sure."

So what is the lush London trio's new stuff sounding like?

"A cross between Pocahontas and Fleetwood Mac," according to Hannah.

"This is genuinely what Hannah said to me the other day," guitarist Dan Rothman added.

"She's like 'I've been thinking about the new songs we've been doing and what we're going to be doing when we get home and I really think it's going to be like a cross between Pocahontas and Fleetwood Mac."

Fleetwood Mac 16 seed a mirage?

http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/letters-editor/2015-03-16/fleetwood-mac-16-seed-mirage.html

Mon, 03/16/2015 - 7:00am | The News-Gazette

As we all know, this time of year, everyone is filling out brackets, and everyone is picking their seeds.

But I have to massively disagree with some of the seedings that The News-Gazette has come up with. In the March 12 edition, the staff made Fleetwood Mac a 16 seed in its Music Madness Bracket!

I was at that concert, and I don't know how any other concert could have filled so many seats.

But to make them a 16 seed and pair them against Farm Aid, which should have been disqualified by the NCAA (National Collegiate Artistic Acts) as being more of a showcase "event" and not really a concert, and using a range of players who had long since gone legendary and used up their collegiate eligibility, is beyond me.

Farm Aid was of course going to win. It was the best and should only be compared to Woodstock or Lolapalooza or the like.

But to put Fleetwood Mac at a 16 against Farm Aid guaranteed them a loss. At least Bruce Springsteen was able to go a couple of rounds, as were The Moody Blues.

But where was Heart? Do they not even rate now? Or Crosby, Stiills and Nash? Did they lose their Conference Tournaments or what? (At least you kept Jethro Tull in there somewhere.)

Q. I saw that you went to Fleetwood Mac with your dad. How was that?

It was amazing, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen in my life. We’re huge fans of the Mac. We both really like their catalog and they played fantastically. My dad and I were running back and forth to the men’s room to rip a bowl, but there was one moment where the band started playing “Rhiannon,” which was one of the songs we wanted to hear. He got flustered and ran into the bathroom, dropped the pipe and it broke on the bathroom floor. So he scooped up all the pieces and the little bowl was still intact, so he ripped it from the broken glass end. Then we went on with our evening.

[Excerpts from a Salon article on battling drug addiction]

Sunday, Apr 5, 2015 05:00 PM PDT by Ashley Zlatopolsky , Salon

http://www.salon.com/2015/04/06/my_road_to_hell_was_paved_with_xanax_and_klonopin_and_ativan_and_halcion/

My road to hell was paved with Xanax (and Klonopin, and Ativan, and Halcion)

The pills were a release from my crushing anxiety. But the more I took, the more I struggled with a new pain

The Rolling Stones’ “Beggars Banquet” and “Let It Bleed” were the soundtracks to my addictions. I’d play the two records over and over, downing pills with a bottle of wine. Sometimes I’d get so high that the record would skip for an hour and I wouldn’t even notice. In rare moments of hopefulness, I’d listen to Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours.” I found Fleetwood Mac, especially Stevie Nicks, to be highly inspirational when nothing in my own life inspired me. Nicks conquered a Klonopin addiction, and though she didn’t write “Don’t Stop” (Christine McVie did), the lyrics convinced me, however temporarily, that maybe one day I could conquer my own addiction, too. I’d play the song over and over, dreaming of a day with no anxiety and no pills.

“Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow / don’t stop, it’ll soon be here / it’ll be better than before / yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone…”

* * *

Stevie Nicks said getting clean from her Klonopin addiction was like somebody opening up a door and pushing her into hell, but what she forgot to mention is that getting clean from a Klonopin (in my case, Klonopin, Xanax, Ambien, Ativan and Halcion) addiction is like somebody opening up a door, pushing you into hell, locking you in, and throwing away the key with a smirk. You become disassociated from everything real, tinkering on the edge of insanity as depression and anxiety creep up behind you and dare to push you over the edge.

Quiz: Songs With Women's Names In The Title

Let's face it: music would suck if women stopped breaking men's hearts.
Women are the subjects behind countless ballads in every genre; we find ourselves singing about women every time we turn on the radio.

Some artists shamelessly reveal the inspiration behind a song--or entire album (like Robin Thicke's Paula), while other musicians conceal their muse behind a phony name. Eric Clapton famously wrote his song "Layla" about Pattie Boyd, the wife of friend George Harrison.

Inventing a character is common too: Courtney Love worked with Billy Corgan and Linda Perry to create "Samantha," a rock ballad about a self-destructive woman. Love's motive: to create a song as popular as Sting's "Roxanne" or Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon."

Now it's time to test your music knowledge: can you ID these songs with women's names in their titles? Good luck; the answers are on page four. If you answer more than 10 correctly, feel free to brag in the comment section below.

14. Both Fleetwood Mac and Bob Dylan have a song named _______.

A. Lola
B. Sara
C. Rebecca
D. Diana

Peaked at #11: Iconic Pop Hits That Missed the Top 10 by One Notch

Rhiannon Fleetwood Mac, 1976
Inspired by the legend of a Welsh witch, it took Stevie Nicks ten minutes to write Rhiannon in Malibu in 1974, three months before joining Fleetwood Mac. Rolling Stone lists it at #488 in the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Fleetwood Mac's next single Say You Love Me also peaked at #11.

Edge of Seventeen Stevie Nicks 1982
Bella Donna established Stevie Nicks as a solo superstar and this iconic rocker with its chugging 16th note guitar riffs and its white winged dove symbolism is a big reason why - so why didn't this take full flight into the Top 10? Who knows - all we know is we love it.

Fleetwood Mac was most popular among four MLB fan bases: the Cubs, Indians, Blue Jays and Nationals. Practically a landslide.

But what about FM's recorded music? Too mellow? Depends on what music of theirs he's talking about. I can't believe he heard the EP. SYW wasn't mellow. Is he talking about The Dance? He makes it sound like something that happened to their sound recently, not 18 years ago. And personally I like my music intense, but I don't like it to seem like it's "acting."

On the other thread I moved the White Album thing. It wasn't a double album so, not sure why I thought.... I think Chili always told us to stop calling it the White Album anyway.

the interview was a re-print of their interview with him in 1978. So he's talking about Rumours-era FM. And I suspect as a Brit he knew the McVies and Mick when he talks about knowing them … and he was probably comparing the Peter Green era band with the then-current Rumours-era band, and I could see how he would think Rumours was mellow in comparison to that.

[Wikileaks posted Sony email in which Cameron Crowe listed Rumours as 21 among his top favorite albums]

http://www.musictimes.com/articles/36188/20150419/cameron-crowe-23-favorite-albums-revealed-wikileaks-beatles-nirvana-radiohead.htm

The Sony hacks revealed many salacious e-mails and details about celebrities in the film and music world, however one bit of information is just as enticing without damaging anyone's reputation: an e-mail where director Cameron Crowe lists his 23 favorite albums of all time, including bits from The Rolling Stones, Nirvana and Radiohead.

Everyone knows that the director has a soft spot for rock 'n' roll: Almost Famous was a very loose interpretation of his time interning for Rolling Stone, while Singles mirrored the rise of the grunge movement. If anyone in the film world is able to give us an interesting list of must-listens, it might be Crowe. The odd rankings come from an e-mail to Sony Pictures chair Amy Pascal, although there's no context as to why she asked.

Those expecting new revelations will be disappointed however, as Crowe takes a fairly vanilla approach: There are no repeat bands, and most of his selections are already accepted as classics. As Billboard notes, he doesn't choose any albums post-Radiohead's OK Computer (1997).

If you want to take some scandal from this list, you can argue that he might be in trouble with his ex-wife Nancy Wilson, as he didn't choose any albums from her band Heart. Perhaps this is at the root of their split?

Probably not, no.

Anyway here's his choices from no. 23 to no. 1:

23) Back in Black by AC/DC

22) Madman Across The Water by Elton John

21) Rumors by Fleetwood Mac

20) Innervisions by Stevie Wonder

19) Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

18) Gonna Take A Miracle by Laura Nyro

17) Live At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers

16) Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie

15) OK Computer by Radiohead

14) Off The Wall by Michael Jackson

13) Nevermind by Nirvana

12) Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen

11) Exile on Main Street by The Rolling Stones

10) Dark Side of The Moon by Pink Floyd

09) Quadrophenia by The Who

08) Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin

07) Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis

06) The White Album by The Beatles

05) After The Gold Rush by Neil Young

04) Blue by Joni Mitchell

03) Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys

02) Blood on The Tracks by Bob Dylan

“When you see a band, like Fleetwood Mac, especially, who went through it and came out the other side and reconciled and forgave and fell in love all over again, that gives people a lot of comfort and a lot of joy. It’s very interesting"

- Bette Midler

[From an article about Pride Cooking Parties]

San Francisco Weekly by Peter Lawrence Kane, 5/18/2015

http://www.sfweekly.com/foodie/2015/05/18/drag-queens-cook-for-a-cause

Pride month rolls on with other collaborations between Kitchit and prominent LGBT chefs, among them Café Rouge’s Rick DeBaord and Shakewell’s Jen Biesty. Suddenly, home entertaining doesn't look so daunting. If your last few dinner parties broke down as guests began arguing vehemently over Stevie Nicks versus Christine McVie, Armageddon versus Deep Impact, or gold versus bitcoin, and you’re beginning to wonder if maybe your decision to tickle their palates with fermented skate was possibly a factor, there is hope!

[From an article about Danielle Antonio]

http://www.pr.com/press-release/618348

Her father, Pete Antell, was a chart-ranking Pop music artist that performed on national tours with Fleetwood Mac, The Doobie Brothers and others. Pete was a part of the Brill Building community and worked with greats such as Ike and Tina Turner, The Four Seasons, Tony Orlando, Jackie Wilson, Count Basie and Cab Calloway. Once while accompanying her dad on tour, Danielle was standing backstage next to Christine McVie's piano and thought "this is what I'm going to do someday." And so the journey began.

[From a Stephen Holden Review of Lauren Fox's cabaret show in the New York Times on May 22, 2015]:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/23/arts/music/review-lauren-foxs-nostalgic-tribute-to-groupie-muses.html?_r=0

We hear the story of Lori Maddox, who had an affair with Jimmy Page while in her teens, and the British model Pattie Boyd, who married George Harrison and later Eric Clapton. Ms. Fox untangles the romantic histories of the Rolling Stones and their women, and the internecine hookups among members of Fleetwood Mac.
