View Full Version : Do you do lyric substitutions on any Stevie songs?

On purpose? I do. I think some of my misheard lyrics sound better, or make the song more interesting. Here are some examples:
Real lyric-
"Well it's hard to be civil, and it's real hard to be nice..."
My substitution-
"Well it's hard to be civil, and it's real hard to be blind..."
Doesn't that sound cooler? Now she's saying "it's hard for me to be in the same room as you, and not only that, now I have to pretend I don't see what you're up to with her? "
Does anyone else do this? Or, just me..

Sometimes with HSML I say, "you go your own way" instead of "you go your way."
I don't make this substitution, but I always thought the better lyric would be in Goodbye Baby, if the first time she said, she went to sleep as two and woke up as one and then the next time she said, she went to sleep as one and woke up as two.
Then, the song could have both meanings, it could be a pregnancy ending, 2 to 1.
And it could also mean a love affair ending, the united couple (1) separating (into 2).
When I first heard Red Rover, I thought the lyrics were, "Christine you were dying and no one was crying," as a reference to maybe Christine's unhappiness during The Dance. But then I read the lyric sheet and saw the words were "could see".
Sometimes I say "thrown down like a hurricane," not because I think "hurricane" is better. It just comes more easily to my lips. If walls, obstacles and barricades are being thrown down, that's actually a good thing and I wouldn't stand in the way of that.

Wait Michele, I thought that was the lyric. That's how I always sing it. Oh, I thought of another one I do sometimes.
Real lyric-
"Well I know you are going, which voice..."
Substitution lyric-
"Well I know you are going, witch boy..."
I don't actually know what a 'witch boy' is. Probably 'warlock' or 'wizard' is more proper, but that doesn't rhyme.
Another..
Real lyric-
"Long nets of white cloud my memory..."
Substitution lyric-
"Moments in wine cloud my memory..."
That speaks for itself. What could cloud your memory more than wine? Or brandy and cocaine? Or Klonopin?? Yup, that's the lyric she really meant to write.
Does this count as a lyric substititution? I add "wells" even where their not supposed to go!

I do this a lot with more recent songs because I don't know the real words, like with GOODBYE BABY & DESTINY RULES & EVERY DAY.

Wait Michele, I thought that was the lyric. That's how I always sing it.
Maybe we just think Stevie, being a weather girl, would know more about hurricanes than barricades. But no . . .

Here is another one...with a twist.
For years I have been singing the following:
"My mind won't rest and I don't sleep...not even in my dreams."
and all this time I actually thought that was my own, cooler, more dramatic lyric. I thought the real lyric was:
"My mind won't rest and I don't see you...not even in my dreams."
Turns out, that wasn't the real lyrci at all! And all this time, I really was singing correctly and taking credit for a more clever lyric! I totally sold Stevie short...she really did write that interesting and perplexing lyric.
Think of that, "...I don't sleep, not even in my dreams." Well, if you can't sleep, how can you dream? Isn't that weird? Enigmatic?

Back in the old days when I wore out my vinyl copy of Tusk, which had no lyric sheets, I made all kinds of blunders:
Real lyric: "...and a black widow spider makes more sound than she"
My lyric: "...and a black widow spider mates, falls behind her cheek"
Real lyric: "...said you'd give me light, but you never told me about the fire."
My lyric: "...said you'd give me life, but you never told me about the fire." I think it's a bit more haunting if sung from the hypothetical baby's point of view.
Real lyric: "...some say illusion's... all her game..."
My lyric: "...some say I'll just... walk again..."
I still wonder whether she was popping 'ludes when she recorded "Sisters of the Moon," since she had such a mush-mouth on that song!

I tend to change the gender, examples:
Stevie's version: "One man walked away from me, first he took my hand...take me home"
My version: "One girl walked away from me, first she took my hand, she said 'take me home'"
Stevie's version: "You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you"
My version: "You'll never get away from the sound of me, woman, I love you"
Stevie: "Don't say that she's pretty, and did you say that she loves you, baby I don't want to know"
Mine: "I won't she was pretty, and did you say that he loved you, baby I don't want to know"
Stevie: "Doing all you can for me, they say you're not the man for me"
Mine: "Doing all I can for you, they say I'm not the man for you"

Doesn't that sound cooler? :
"So with the snow -
Graceful flow -
of age;
I have fought
with an angel's desire
to please
one the edge of -
seven-teen." :p
Also,
"He was just like a great dark wing
within the winds of a storm."
Somehow the double use of the word "wing" doesn't do it for me - - - How does a STORM have a WING!? "Winds" seems to fit much better there, for me.
By the way, I like the new format in here. I think it looks pretty cool.

it is ARE her game.
Real lyric: her black robes trailing, sister of the moon
my friend thought: her black rose tray lamp, sister of the moon
Real lyric: long distance winner where we survived the flight
I thought: come Mr. Squinard where we survived the flight

I thought this:
And the days go by
Doing nothing about them
Was this:
And the days go by
Doing noting up out there
And in I Can't Wait I used to think it was "Yes I know you, though we've been out of dust" LOL.

Well that's an interesting one.:lol:
I always knew the "she was dark at the top of the stairs" line because of the Inge play. But I always wondered how the Ingle play title got into a Stevie Nicks song.

And in Frozen Love, even tho I had the gatefold with the lyrics I never looked at em but once or twice and so for many years I was singing FATE gave me you for a lover. Then Michelle pointed out one day the real lyric was HATE gave me you for a lover.

Me too! I always sang 'Fate' instead of 'Hate'. And I also had the gatefold BN, but must not have studied it very hard, LOL.

For the longest time I thought Stevie was singing
"Damn my wild heart"
real lyrics. " dare my wild heart"
oh and i also thought she was singing
" the children lay hopelessly in chains"
real lyrics:
"where are the children well are they hopelessly enchanted"
silly silly me

I like "damn my wild heart" better.

I Do the EXACT same thing on this song! That's what I originally thought it was, and I do kinda like it better....
I also do "Well baby, I'm just thinkin' that the rooms are all on fire every time that you come into view that one I do on purpose, because I think the real lyric repeats the word 'room' too much...ha!

I used to think "Edge of Seventeen" had a weird lyric:
Instead of: "I went forth with an age old desire to please"
I thought it was: "I would fart with an angel, desire to wheeze."
I don't sing it like that, though!
The only "lyric substitutions" I know I make are in "Stand Back" when I do it at karaoke. The most noticeable one is when I sing: "No one knows how I feel or what I mean unless you read between my lines" instead of "or what I say unless you read between my lines." And that's because I like it when Stevie sings "mean" instead of "say" so much better.

I was in the supermarket just a few minutes ago humming 'Gypsy' and I suddenly remembered the mother-of-all-on-purpose lyric substitutions I used to do.
Flash back to 1982, when I heard 'Gypsy' for the first time, no internet back then and I didn't own the album or cassette so I couldn't verify the lyrics. But this is how I sang along to the radio:
Real Lyric-
"I have no fear
I have only love.
And if I was a child...
and the child was enough...
Enough for me to love...
enough to lovvvvvvve!
She is dancing, away...from you now..."
Lyric Substitution (which should actually be categorized as a mis-heard lyric, but I prefer my own version so now it really is a lyric substitution)
"Well have no fear...
have only love.
And if I had a child...
and the child was in love...
She doesn't need love...
she wants to, falllllllll!
She is dancing...in the rain, for you now"
Doesn't my version just make your skin crawl? The 'dancing in the rain' part is such homage to the 'Gypsy' video, and doesn't it sound like she is pining away for her own baby when she sings "And if I had a child...?"

I'm so embarrassed I'm sharing this with you guys. When Timespace came out my friends and I used to love to sing along to Sometimes It's A Bitch and always sing the chorus wrong. Just to be silly. Some of the things we'd sing...
Sometimes it's a bitch
Sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes you cough
And sometimes you sneeze
or...
Sometimes it's carrots
and sometimes it's pees
or
Sometimes mosquitoes
and sometimes it's fleas
or
Sometimes your elbows
and sometimes your knees
Oh, we were bad! But really, the possibilities are endless.

From Molly Snyder Edler, a writer at Onmilwaukee.com
http://onmilwaukee.com/family/articles/motherfest061207.html
Everyone has a story about a word or lyric they misunderstood as a kid. For me, it was "Second Hand News" by Fleetwood Mac. When I was six or seven, this was my favorite radio song. I would often belt out the chorus -- which officially goes "I'm just second hand news, second hand news, second hand news." However, I was certain Stevie was saying "I'm just sittin' here nude, sittin' here nude, sittin' here nude..." Whoops.

My lyric: "...said you'd give me life, but you never told me about the fire."
I always sing that too! Didnt even know that that wasn't right :o
What about this one of Gypsy:
instead of she was just a wish:
she was just a witch, just a wiiitch

I know. I can only reconcile that lyric if it doesn't mean, walk as in stride or step. If walk actually means perambulate, then it's too stupid for words.
In my mind, I have it mean "walk away" or "walk out the door. So, I have "one for the way you walk and one for the way you love me" mean something like, "one for the way you leave and one for the way you stay." I mean, maybe we're talking about tough love here, like Jimmy Iovine leaving because he couldn't put up with the cocaine or Joe Walsh leaving because he supposedly told Sharon he and Stevie would kill each other if they stayed.
So, I hear Stevie saying there are two different kinds of love, someone can love you if they stay with you no matter what or they can love you if they leave, even though leaving is painful, if they think leaving is the only way to save you or the love you've shared.

Here are some I found on a misheard lyric site:
Say .. Women ... they will come and they will go
When the right one comes you claim you'll know
You can go your own way
Don't go hungry
See that designer sissy/ temporary one, anyone
When the rain washes you, clean your nose
There's people in the larder
Who haven't even showered
(that one is really the "I'll speak a little louder, I'll even shout" part of everywhere! :] )
Don't stop thinking about your mama.
When the rainbow shaves you clean, you'll know...
Which is why the police have an airplane field
(Which is wide - at least half a playing field)
I took my love and I milked a cow
(what if Landslide really said this? LOL)
Give to me your liver, take from me my legs...
