View Full Version : Tusk (25 Years: The Chain) vs. Tusk (Album version)

For the first time, I played the version of "Tusk" on 25 Years: The Chain back to back with the album version and the version that appears on Very Best of Fleetwood Mac. I had always thought there were slight variations between the three (I chalked it up to transfers to/mixing of the cds); however, this time I noticed that the 25 Years: The Chain version contains a wildly different intro. So... I go home... look at the credit in the liner notes and it simply attributes this to "From the Album Tusk"! It's not listed as an alternate version, or possibly as the version released on radio/as a single (is that was distinguishes the album version from the Very Best of version?).

So what is the true nature of this version on 25 Years: The Chain?

On the four CD version of the Chain, it does suggest that the version of Tusk is the standard album track. However on the 2 CD version of the Chain it is listed as the USC Intro Mix. Both versions are the same so I can only assume that it was a printing error on the 4 CD version:shrug:.

Interestingly (for me) Brown Eyes on the 4 CD version is listed as the standard album track but it sounds different to the version on Tusk to me. And more different than just a bit of remastering. Maybe a McVie fan can help?

Sorry it doesn't exactly answer your question.........

Well, it doesn't reveal the source, but it definately does reveal that it is different. I LOVE THIS VERSION!!!

Does this mean I have to seek out the 2-cd version too? If I figured how much money I've spent on the Mac. . . . well, I'd do it all over again. . .

Unless you just want to have it with a different title, then no... they're the same version. I have the 2cd sampler, but if you already have the 4 disc Chain, there's really nothing to write home about.

I will need to give Brown Eyes some spins though and investigate what Stew is hearing. I haven't listened to the boxed set in so long. It's one of those things that I forget I have. (Man, I wish they'd release another set. And a coffee table book. It's an addiction. :distress: )

OMG, those versions of Brown Eyes are COMPLETELY different. And the liner notes once again just say: "From the Album Tusk"

I think this means I have to go through every track on The Chain and compare (typically I just listen to The Chain for the unique songs. . . I guess there are more than I originally noted.)

I agree that it is the best version.

No as Sarah said the 2 CD version is just a cut of the 4 CD set. I just checked the booklet and it is the same. In fact I have three copies of the 2 CD set so if you want one to complete your set, pm your details and I'll send you one.

 yeah I think so too - the guitar (the bit I would notice) is completely different.

I haven't listened to the box set in many years but what I do remember and want you to know is whomever put it together with those liner notes must have been high. There are many tracks that are different mixes than the originals. The majority of the remixes are not listed as such and several of the songs they claim to be remixes are really not, just the original versions. So you as the listener must go through all of them and you will be able to figure it out.
I love the version of Tusk on the boxset. Also some of Christine's best songs ever are on this box set. A great single would have been Love Shines IMO.
I once had a CD sampler that contained all the new songs and a few remixes of the others. I lent it out and that woman kept it.

Yes, I think Love Shines is a sublime pop record. Mick should have released it as a single for sure! What was he thinking?

It was released as a single, at least in Germany! It also includes The Chain (alt mix), Isn't It Midnight (edited alt. version), and Not That Funny (edit live from Mirage tour).

Also released as singles from The Chain Box Set were Paper Doll and, needlessly, Don't Stop.

I choose the original Tusk version. The Chain version is cool, but I choose the original. Same with Isn't it midnight.

However it would be difficult to choose Sara, I mean between the original and the one in CD2 of the bonus special edition released few years ago. That version is really cool and intense.

I like the Tusk box set version because you can actually hear the USC marching band in it...the org. version you hardly hear them at all. I don't like the box set version of Brown Eyes. This is one version that I love the original version period. I need to listen to the box set. I have not listend in sometime.
