Mine is Planet of the Apes, no doubt. I liked Ben Hur far more than The Ten Commandments (to heavy and long inmho), but Planet of the Apes is one of my favorites movies

I was checking his profile at imdb, what a long filmography! Hollywood and epic movies have lost one of its greatest stars. I will miss him.

ps.. I don't know why he was uncredited in the new version of Planet of the apes. He played Zaius, Thade's Father.

Touch of Evil. Welles gave him the chance to be free.

THE PRIVATE WAR OF MAJOR BENSON
The first movie I probably ever saw with Heston may have been THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, whose annual showing was a big treat for kids, like THE WIZARD OF OZ. But my favorite Heston movie is THE PRIVATE WAR OF MAJOR BENSON, another one of those late Saturday afternoon movies the whole family watched: a TV dinner movie. It's a rotten movie, of course, but a childhood artifact & a source of nostalgie de la boue for me. (I probably got a little bit of a kick out of seeing in it the same lady who went swimming with the Black Lagoon creature -- Julie Adams.)

Greer Garson & Robert Ryan tried their hand at a Major Benson type of story with HER TWELVE MEN, but they just piddly-widdly failed. (And for Robert Ryan to fail, that's something.)

I loved the annual viewing of 'The Ten Commandments'. I actually get blubbery sometimes when I see it, because it's so earnest and so visual, but also because it sort of takes me back to my childhood. He was wonderfully heroic in this, and I loved Yvonne De Carlo. Oh, and who didn't hiss at Anne Baxter?

Definitely BEN-HUR. That chariot race scene is amazing. I read it took five weeks to film.

I never found the red car in the chariot race, it is supposed to be a famous movie mistake. Has anybody seen it ?

For a high quality film it'd have to be A Touch of Evil but for campy watchability I'd have to go for The Ten Commandments.Never before or since was the absurd mythological quality of the old testament presented quite so entertainingly.

•The Greatest Show on Earth (1952, Paramount, $10). In just his second major film, Heston landed the male lead (as a circus manager) in its year's top box-office hit. With enough plot to take in a mercy killing and a massive train wreck, Cecil B. DeMille's extravaganza is often cited as the worst movie to have taken the Oscar.

The Ten Commandments...but I also loved Ben-Hur.

As an aside, Yul Brynner as Ramses is just too good in the TC.

Omega Man, which was just remade as I Am Legend (the title of the novel source material).
Betsy, with a little photoshop, this poster is easily changed to star someone else....

Well, of course, I haven't seen every movie he has been in, but I'd say that my favorites were Ben-Hur, The 10 Commandments & all the Planet of the Ape movies. Loved those Planet of the Ape movies!

I'm so glad someone else likes this flick. I think it's so underrated. It wasn't even mentioned in the movie tributes to CH that I've read since his passing. Other than this movie, my next fave CH showcase is Omega Man. Scary and suspenseful.

What's the red car?

You never heard about it??

I found in the weball of these movie mistakes about Ben Hur, but not sure if they are true. I have never found that red car when I saw (many times) Ben Hur.
(but I did find the guy in blue jeans at the beginning of Gladiator).

In the chariot scene, in the shots where the chariots are shown coming towards the camera, tire tracks can be seen in the sand in front of the chariots.
* Right before the start of the chariot race, one of the trumpeters can be seen wearing a watch.
* During the chariot race, you can see a shadow of an airplane go by.
* During the chariot race, a red car can be seen through the arcs in the back of the coliseum.
* In several shots during the chariot race, a bottle of Coke can be seen.
* The number of chariots that start the race is one fewer than the number that finish or crash.

 I never knew about these. It's odd that William Wyler (director) wouldn't have caught these (coke bottle) and edited it out. I read they shot several hours fo retakes for that 15 minute scene. Seems like they could have used a another retake.

Great topic! His greatest film has to be Touch of Evil (Welles being the MAN!!!!!). He's smokin' hot in Ruby Gentry. I second and third those who appreciate The Greatest Show On Earth. In some ways, that's the sort of thing Hollywood used to do best. I don't think it's a work of art like, say, The Quiet Man (which it beat for best picture, right? -- memory is failing me), but it is the sort of movie that should win Oscars. A serious entertainment that doesn't offend. Full of good stuff.

BTW, I loved it when he appeared as himself in FRIENDS. Joey entered to his room and got a shower because "he stinks". And Charlton gave him some advice. It was so funny

I'll miss Mr. Heston.

I was just reading an interview done with Charlton Heston, Villavic, and apparently the story of the red car is just a myth, and he clears up other stories as well. You can read it here:

Betsy, I'm an idiot. I posted in the unfinished version. There's an addition to the strange graphic at the top of the poster, Stevie's the same color as Charlton Heston on the original poster, some work around her hand and the obvious title change.
