Can someone clarify for me the origins of this song. I thought I read once that this version of 'Thrown Down' was recorded for TISL, and Stevie and Linds just added new vocals for for a SYW single. And then, another 'Thrown Down' was used on the album itself. I'm feeling like I can hear a slight variation on Stevie's vocal, so that makes me suspect this is not merely a dressed-up version of the SYW track. But I could be wrong, so please feel free to educate me on this track.

This 'Thrown Down' should have been a hit. Foolish record-buying (or mp3-downloading) public.

The SYW version Thrown Down should have been a hit. I can't be the only one that strongly prefers the album version, or am I?

The alternate version is too busy and bland for my tastes. The harmonies on the album version stand out, and the overall faster pace of the song works quite well. It's my favorite track on the album.

I think the harmonies are incredible. I prefer it to the alternate as well. I would say that, with Miranda, it is one of my 2 favorite tracks on the album and one of my favorite Stevie songs of all time.

Just yesterday I sent this wall of sound version to the recycled bin. So I go there and find it cause I want to post it for you. I hit restore and off it went to God knows where. I have searched everywhere and can't locate it.
Could someone educate me on how to figure out , how to find out, where it went to?

It probably went back to its original directory. Do a Windows search of its name (if you remember it). Let me know if this doesn't work. There are a few other ways to find it.

Thank you for the quick response. I already went back to its origin and still can't locate it. I can find it in windows media player but I can't seem to find where it is in whatever music file it dropped into.

I like Lindsey's intensity on the Wall of Sound version. I can't think of any song of Stevie's over the last 20 years where he was that vocally compelling. You'd have to go back to Buckingham Nicks.

To be honest, what you find vocally compelling I find cheesy- especially towards the end... although its not nearly as cheesy as the background vocals during the chorus ("Don't say you're sorry babaaaay!")

Vivfox...if you can find it in windows media player, you should be able to right click it (in the player) and a window should pop up saying something like "open file location" ... if you click on that, it should open the folder it's in, with the track highlit...I've used that method multiple times to find things...good luck! I hate when things on my computer disappear into the ether!

As to the 'WOS' version of thrown down, I actually like it the best of the three versions I've heard...(Meaning TISL demo, SYW alb track and WOS)...but it's a great song, either way...

The "wall of sound" version of Thrown Down was indeed meant for TISL... it's one of the songs Stevie pulled for use on a future Fleetwood Mac album (remember how she said in interviews at the time of TISLs release that she saved several songs she recorded because she felt they were FM songs, not solo ones?). I much prefer this version of the song to the one that made it on SYW, which just sounds bare and flat to my ears. The single version of this song is just cheesy sounding to me.

Okay, now I'm confused... I thought the single version is the "wall of sound version." Is there yet another version that I am not aware of?

I happen to belong to the camp that prefers the SYW album version. The arrangement is spare, but it totally fits with the mournful lyrics. I think the single version is just too happy-sounding, and Stevie's vocals are impassionate- almost Klonopin-era-like.

Huh? I thought the 'wall of sound' version was the single version.?
Ditto, though. The SYW has a more flat sound to it, though Stevie delivers a great vocal and I love the lyrics.
"You can outside his door and wait...Well, you can dedicate your Pain to him.."

There are 3 versions of Thrown down

1) The "Wall Of Sound" version, dating to Stevie's Trouble In Shangri La album (this is the version posted in this thread)

2) There is the Say You Will album version

3) There is a Single version, which is very similar to the Say You Will album version, it's just been tweaked some so that certain sounds stand out more coming through radio transmission because certain ranges are lost through radios vs CDs. The production of this version is just a little cheesy, they add some weird little "Lindsey noises," y'all all know what I'm talking about. For instance those strange chicken noises on Peacekeeper lol. I have this version on my old computer which is in the attic... it's nothing to write home about.

If it was recorded for TISL, why are Lindsey's vocal on the track?

Also -- Has anyone noticed how similar the drum intro's to the WoS version of Thrown Down and Strait Back are very similar?

I've always thought that this version of Thrown Down sounds a little bit too much like Everyone Finds Out, especially the acoustic guitar.

Yes, that's what makes it confusing to me too. It doesn't seem like Lindsey to just take a finished Stevie song and add some vocals to it. I would think he'd want to re-record the whole thing (and, he did. Hence the SYW version).
So...if the 'WOS' version was a true TISL, does anyone have the credits for it? Who produced it, and who were the personnel? I think I hear Sharon and Lori, but that could be Lindsey too.

Lindsey had been working on a few of the TISL songs. Supposedly Sheryl Crow produced that version.

I had dowloaded the SYW tracks from Nabster shortly before the CD was realeased and all of the songs were the same as the CD except Thrown Down, which was the version above.

I much prefer the SYW version..... it has a Gypsy guitar sound to it

Don't forget there are also two demo versions of song from the TISL album sessions.

What kind of question is that?

That's like asking why Lindsey played guitar on "I Miss You".

I cant cite the specific interview...but I remember SHeryl Crow said (before TISL came out) that she had just "finished" and amazing track with Stevie and Lindsey and something to the effect that it was gonna "blow everyone away"...and then TISL came out...and there was nothing with Lindsey on it. I remember going...HUH? Turns out, it was Thrown Down.

Well the TISL demo "Thrown Down" leaked around the same time as the demo for "Not Make Believe"...so she could have felt that "Not Make Believe" was more "FM-y."

My theory is that when they decided to pull Thrown Down from TISL, they realized there had already been a lot of press about Lindsey guesting on TISL, so they had him come in and put a guitar part on I Miss You, so they could say, see? Lindsey is on the album...

Have to check my notes, but I believe "I Miss You" was recorded w/ Nowels at Westlake Studios in early 2000... well before any Lindsey press would have been out there.

Hello all---

Thanks for sharing this tune. Even though I like the official album version better, this one is interesting to hear. I've been out of the loop for a while. Are there any other "unreleased" band demos or other such leaked tracks from the SYW sessions? [Aside from Lindsey's GOS versions, that is.]
