On the Rosebud documentary, the end of "You Make Loving Fun" goes something like:
LB: Ooh, yeah, you make loving fun
CM/SN: I'm beginning to wonder why
LB: Ooh, yeah, you make loving fun
CM/SN: I've feeling it's time to try
Lather, rinse, repeat followed by a nifty little guitar bit.
In a live Rumours tour version of the song (Oklahoma City, to be exact), the song ends the way it does on the album, with the "you making loving fun, it's all I want to do" lyric.
Does anyone know exactly when/why this changed? I don't suppose there are any studio versions of the song with the first lyric, which I really like and prefer to what ended up on the album? Did they ever perform the song Rosebud-style live after Rumours came out?

I've thought about this too, but I'm not sure when the change occurred.
I prefer the "it's all I want to do" ending though... it just sounds a little more natural (to my ears) to stretch out "do" than "try".

I'm almost positive the version on the second disc of the Rumours deluxe edition has that ending lyric- it is my favorite version. Christine sings the second verse right after the first, creating a long musical interlude that is mesmerizing. And you hear Stevie a lot more!

Thanks for the heads up about The D2 version...I'm gonna go back and listen again! I think my favorite version of this song is 'The Dance' one...I just love the harmonys and the way they switched it up...

It most certainly does. It also contains the harmony Stevie is doing during the chorus, "i never did believe..." I believe it also has the interlude before the guitar solo as in Rosebud. It's the chorus without the singing. This version was the way the song was originally thought to be produced. They even did it in concert on the '76 tour that way (hence the Rosebud performance). Apparently, they changed their minds later on. I like the earlier version better too.

I like the rosebud version of this song the best, truth be told.
The SN harmonies on the RD2 sound amazing with CMs in the 'i never did beleive [etc.]' part of the song, and the beginging, the 'false start', is how i wish the whole song would sound. its more blusey, like a jam. not as perfectly crafted.
Whenver i sing the song, i sing it 'im begining to wonder why' not 'its all i wanna do'. i agree with Sarah, as it does sound more natural as 'its all i wanna do', but i just like the rosebud better.
i wish my coumpuer hadnt died. i would have it on right now.
I think that a lot of Rumours was overproduced truth be told :X

I'm a fan of the original album version: it's a bit tighter, more concise. But I was thrilled when I first heard the live Rosebud version--and am still glad to have the alternate take on the second cd of Rumors.

It's on the deluxe edition of Rumours. I like it too.

Ack, thanks for reminding me that the version is on the second disc! I have that but usually tend to stick to the non-album tracks on that disc and rarely listen to this version, now I'll be sure to!
