View Full Version : Live in Boston vs. The Dance

I've had Live in Boston for a long, long time. All the songs from the CD are on my iPod, I've watched parts of the DVD a handful of times, yet I always, always fall back onto The Dance when I am so inclined to listen to/watch fairly recent, non-bootlegged live Fleetwood Mac. I know part of it is because I am one of the ones that grew to love this band because of The Dance, but also, I just think it is a lot better. I'm sure Christine's presence helps The Dance's cause quite a bit too.
My question is, though, are there any songs on Live in Boston that are also on The Dance that you prefer the Live in Boston versions of? I really want to try and appreciate this collection a little bit more, if possible.
Please disregard this message if NO ONE pays any attention to Live in Boston. Which could very well be a possibility.

"I'm So Afraid" is partially what caused me to post this! Maybe it's because I spent hours upon hours listening to The Dance version back when that CD first came out and I had no bootlegs or even Live yet (love that version as well), but the one on Live in Boston just made me itch to listen to The Dance version instead. I do think Live in Boston has more raw energy to it, but I just can't get into it the same way.

Live in Boston I watched all the way thru the first time it aired on tv and then watched Rhiannon one more time. Never listened to it again. I never bought The Dance cause I had already heard many bootlegs by 1997 that were a million times more better than that show. So I woudn't pick either of them. But if this counts I do remember on the SYW Tour I was most impressed with I'm So Afraid and Gypsy on the night I saw them in Phoenix, Az.

I like the production value of The Dance better, just because it's a cleaner recording to my ears.
But, I like the harmony on LIB much better than The Dance on many of the songs - and more than likely because I'm more into the focus on SnL's vocals.
Song specific, I LOVE the intensity of "Silver Springs" on LIB 1000 times more than The Dance. I do miss Stevie's "never get away" adlib, but the new ones make up for it and being able to see her rock out on the dvd just sends it over the top for me.
I also love "Don't Stop" from LIB because of Stevie's interpretation.
The Dance versions of "The Chain", "Dreams", "Gypsy", "Rhiannon", and "Landslide", and "Tusk" are maybe a little better to me...but there again there's harmony between SnL on "The Chain" ("dow-wn comes the nigh-ight) that is awesome and the "Landslide" reveal make the LIB one special...and I just thought the "Tusk" dance was cute -but the last 2 things are dvd specific, not just audio. And "Go Your Own Way" on LIB again, has a little more SnL harmony.
I guess overrall, The Dance is an excellent Fleetwood Mac, studio-perfected, live recording, but I appreciate the rawness and maturity of LIB as well as the opportunity to hear/witness a Buckingham Nicks of today.
Tough call though.

You've got it in a nutshell!
I've been comparing the two this evening (spooky, since I haven't listened to either in yonks, and then this discussion shows up ), Go Your Own Way and Tusk in particular. In both cases the Dance recordings are sharper, cleaner and 'perfected' but LIB has more energy and spontaneity. Go Your Own Way on LIB just kicks all the ass out of everything -- it just sends tingles up my spine. Yes, it's an old song and we all know it off by heart and have heard it thousands of times in thousands of incarnations ... but Lindsey still rocks the socks right off it.

I just spent the past hour actually WATCHING this show, as opposed to listening which is always much more convenient, just leaving the songs on when they pop up on the iPod, and I'm already answering my own questions!
I somehow forgot how crazy and FUN the end of "Tusk" is, I was literally laughing out loud! And "Silver Springs", which didn't really rub me the right way on audio, hit me much stronger just watching it. Actually SEEING the energy and chemistry of this show makes it ten times better.
And yes, for some reason, I think I neglected this compilation because of the lack of Christine, instead of appreciating how cool and different and amazing having just Stevie and Lindsey is. Already, my appreciation for this is growing like crazy, making me wish I noticed it awhile ago (and even more sad I never got to see them during this tour).
I can totally see the idea of The Dance being so polished and perfected, with LiB being much more raw and in the moment.
I am really glad I asked! Keep the discussion coming! And even more glad I popped this thing in tonight. It's been neglected for far too long.

Both have their positives and negatives. Ahhh who am I kidding, the Dance has no negatives. Every song was done to perfection. Now the song selections I can complain on. Christine could have chosen some better gems. Over my Head? Cmon Chris. Its always sucked live (except for the 75' tour). Lindsey had the right idea with two new songs in there. Sweet Girl is 'good', but Twisted might have prevailed over it. I heard it was in the rehearsal set.
Anyway - LIB....Eyes of the World is awesome. Should never leave the FM set. Second Hand News...ahh they finally got it right. This was the first tour where I think they nailed it. Rhiannon, I prefer LIB surprisingly. She kicked ass on. Gypsy....White boots and "Bright Eyes" line...makes it all worthwhile, but The Dances' Gypsy was pretty amazing. Beautiful Child..I didn't understand the hype. Great song..yes...Storms or Sisters could have nailed it. Tusk...I can't decide because on LIB they ripped the guitar part directly from the dance. If you compare audience version recordings of Tusk to the LIB tusk they are VERY different. Stand Back....Just incredible.

"Over My Head" on The Dance is pretty low-key, I agree. I think the harmony is off because it's mostly Stevie's ladies as opposed to Lindsey and Stevie. I love the bass line on it, but I much prefer the version from Live. Not much question why they left that off the CD release. Now why they left "Gypsy" and "Go Insane" off (and Songbird, for that matter)...
The actual CD song selection of Live in Boston could represent this show a little better, I wonder why they left off the songs that weren't already recently released live on The Dance not too long before. "Never Going Back Again" and "Second Hand News" especially would have been nice additions. At least they put "Eyes of the World" on their, one of my favorite versions of the song and one of the things I really liked about this set before tonight's revisit.

For what it's worth, LIB distinguishes itself simply being the four without McVie. I think "Eyes of the World" "Stand Back" and "Second Hand News" were great but was pretty underwhelmed with "Gypsy" and even this version of "Big Love" Maybe I'm alone, but I thought "Beautiful Child" was done really well. But I do agree that Sisters would have been great too. I almost have to pick LIB because it's got so much more intensity behind it than The Dance.

Sweet Girl is 'good', but Twisted might have prevailed over it. I heard it was in the rehearsal set.
YES. Twisted could have been simply unbelievable on the Dance, with a very "Silver Springs" type intensity, especially if Stevie nailed all the vocals at the end. It is one of the most powerful songs they have ever done together. What a missed opportunity.
I agree with the general consensus- "The Dance" is great for the excitment of Stevie being "back", the big reunion, its polished and perfect and a hell of a comeback.
LIB more captures the actual concert experience. I LOVE this version of Dreams too, and Rhiannon kicks ass. GYOW is legandary. EOTW and Second Hand News totally rock. Its hard for me to compare the duplicate songs though--I love the two versions for different reasons. Landslide and Silver Springs, though, hands down, go to the Dance- the vocals on LIB are very strained  Gypsy is hard- I love the outfit and "bright eyes" on LIB, but the strong vocals and high notes on the Dance make it IMO the best live version of the song.
Does anyone dispute the supremacy of "Gold Dust Woman" from the Dance? My mom and I were always blown away they left that off the CD- Stevie really knocked this one out, and we caught a glimpse of the "wild" Stevie we all feel in love with.

I feel the Dance was missing a few songs. Obviously when I first watched it I didn't know that, but in hindsight! Stand Back and Little Lies spring first to mind. I know they recorded Stand Back but it didn't make the final cut. When you compare it with something like Over My Head which (I feel) didn't make as much of an impact, I think it should have been there.

I have to disagree simply because "Stand Back" is not a FM song, it's a Stevie solo song. LB and CM didn't do their solo stuff. For instance, they could have done "Little Lies" (FM song) but not "Got a Hold On Me" (CM solo song) or "Not That Funny" (FM song) but not "Trouble" (LB solo song)....it gets so jumbled up doesn't it?
This lineup of FM was breaking up from the beginning! ;)

Over My Head made a huge impact in the 70's and it's still played on classic rock stations to this day. Stand Back is always an audience favorite but given the choice, a FM cut would make the CD quicker than any solo song would IMO.

Mine has chapters. It starts the show without bringing you to a menu but then if I hit the "menu" button on the remote it brings me to it. Maybe it is the newer ones that have it because I only got mine a couple of years ago.

The Dance, no doubt, was better.
First of all, we got the whole Rumours lineup. That's my main reason. No Fleetwood Mac is perfect without Christine... well, actually without the whole lineup.
Second, production was better. Obviously because the show was oriented to be a DVD and CD, celebrating the reunion, so it had to follow the Eagles reunion format, or like other bands. It had to sound perfect.
And voices were in better shape, specially Stevie's. She sounded far lower in Boston.
The good thing of Boston was that it actually sounded more "live", spontaneous, natural.. ok you may say "authentic". Yes, The Dance was "too produced", but that was their point in that moment.
Stand Back was great at Boston. Yes, maybe it didn't fit at the Dance, though the band has adopted SB since years ago in their shows. And we got great songs like Beautiful Child, Sara.. songs we had never seen live.. or didn't see since long ago.. Boston is a great show. It has its highlights. But The Dance was the great reunion.

"The Dance" by far. The band had become a bit of a joke. All of their releases bombed miserably by their standards. Even if one combines the sales of "Out Of The Cradle," "Street Angel," and "Time," and hell throw in the box set, and it still adds up to a miserable failure. Stevie was headlining quarter-to-half filled venues, Lindsey was downgraded to opening act, and Mick and John's new Fleetwood Mac was part of oldies packages. Christine was the only one smart enough to stay home, realizing they were old and people didn't like them anymore. But, then realizing there was a lot of money to be made, they somehow found a way to bury the hatchet. But, they looked great, sounded great, and played with confidence.
LIB feels like the contractual obligation album by people clearly tired of being around each other. It's nice to have a full show of the set they played over 175 times. My biggest gripe, though, is that the CD was mostly songs that were also on "The Dance." Gee, why not put songs NOT on that album on there? They had to know most people weren't going to play that instead of "The Dance," if for no other reason than "The Dance" has Christine McVie.

I prefer Live in Boston. Because of the fact that it seems to be less over produced than The Dance was.
Besided I have never saw a Dance-tour performance with my own eyes, because the didn't come to Europe that time around. I had to travel to Germany to see SYW and LIB is an extra memory for that show...
I have it on my Ipod in both a audio as well as a video-version..

LIB wins in so many ways for me. It's just a way better representaion of Fleetwood Mac live then The Dance is. Don't get me wrong, I love The Dance and think The Dance CD is way better then LIB, but LIB is the 10x better DVD IMO. The intensity is so much higher, especially on Lindsey's end. It can be at times like a heavy metal show (Come, So Afraid especially) and as for Stevie, she's half and half. Half the time she's better on LIB half the time she was better on The Dance. I can't believe I'm alone in think Gypsy is better on LIB. That's the one song that I think is most obvious as being better on LIB, her vocals are way beter. Silver Springs on the other hand was way better on The Dance, the rest are all kind of even. Dreams and Rhiannon aren't that good on either when I think about it, Rhiannon rocks a little harder on LIB but really she hasn't done that song well until the past year. Gold Dust Woman on the other hand is incredible on both. I like both equally. The wail is better on the dance, but I think the rest of the song is better on LIB. And then of course Stevie's best 2 songs on LIB weren't on The Dance at all, Stand Back and Beautiful Child. Oh and I can't forget The Chain, that one goes to The Dance overall especially on the vocals, but LIB has the better ending guitar solo.
That whole post made me realize what an INCREDIBLE tour Fleetwood Mac could have if Stevie brought her vocals and performances she's been giving this past year, with what Lindsey always does, I'm not saying SYW Stevie is bad. Stand Back, GDW and Beautiful Child were incredible, but the rest was merely average. If she sang like she has on her recent tours alongside Lindsey's antics I can't imagine the possiblities !

She doesn't want to go on the road with Lindsey without someone there to keep him in line. She claims that Lindsey always listened to Chris and never listens to her.
So, I suggest that Stevie's answer would be to go on the road with another woman who can also supervise Lindsey. If they can find some way to work Kristen into their act, then I think Stevie's dilemma would be solved.

It'd be so rude of them to do a BN tour. They get money regardless because they have the songwriting credits. Going out and making a grip of tour money without Mick and John would be rotten, especially since they are the ones that have kept it together and are ready to go every single time.
I wish I could get a Lindsey, Mick, John, Brett, Neale, and Wally tour. Let Stevie take her ball and go home since that's what she threatens to do.

That's what I'd love to see as well. Those guys could tear it up. I missed Mick and John on I'm So Afraid on the UTS tour, although Tako/Wally did a good job on percussion. I'd just rather have a real kit than the MIDI one.

I agree in a way. Yet, if BN is re-released and they decided to promote it, would it be sad to see Mick and John backing them up on BN songs? I guess that wouldn't matter. Crystal was adopted by FM and they'd probably only do 3 other BN songs. It would be fitting for them to play Frozen Love and they could tell the story about Mick hearing it, so they could pull it off without letting us completely forget we were at an FM show.
To tell you the truth, sometimes during the SYW tour, when they, Stevie and Lindsey, addressed the audience, they would often include each other in their remarks without mentioning John and Mick and it sometimes seemed like a BN tour anyway.

Seriously. At this point, Stevie can tour at her own pace, in her own comfort zone, and let the guys do what they want to do. Not that I'm not pulling for her to tour with Fleetwood Mac again because I am, but I think a lineup like this would be pure bliss. Granted, I'm not exactly sure what the setlist would include or how it would differ much more from a Lindsey show that happens to have Mick and John around too, but I'm sure they could work something out.

That's what makes it so great! It would basically be a Lindsey show with John and Mick! :D Regardless of whether or not they called it Fleetwood Mac or not I would love to see those guys up on stage playing a Liddy-centric setlist.

That's what I'd love to see as well. Those guys could tear it up. I missed Mick and John on I'm So Afraid on the UTS tour, although Tako/Wally did a good job on percussion. I'd just rather have a real kit than the MIDI one.
which would be the missing link in basicly all Lindsey's solowork. A real drumkit. Played by the only dude on the planet that REALLY feels -even if he's forced by the visionaire- in which way his songs can drift.
For that matter, I'm also very interested what such a line-up can come up with in the studio. GOS-sessions served some insight: Come, GOS, Miranda, Twist Of Fate, Shuffle Riff etc...
An exciting thought. Much more exciting than any other imaginable FM-line-up.

well...maybe we can hold out for "Buckingham/Nicks" tour since Stevie wont do a "Fleetwood Mac" thing without Christine. I can see them doing a tour together ala Lindsey's last solo gig. Smaller venues...you know they'd sell out. No problem there. Do maybe about 16 songs or so...

Word to the max. They should do it.

I prefer The Dance. I LOVE the size of the audience at LIB and the venue and STAND BACK but it always seemed to be missing something to me. And I can't STAND that stupid tea-pot dance during Say You Will. But I do live Eyes Of The World and Landslide (which made me cry) from LIB. But overall, The Dance gets my vote.

I love the teapot dance? But "The Dance" is better.
