You know, I really don't have much of a rant, but the people around me obviously do. I'm sick of everyone bitching about something. ALL THE TIME!!! EVERYONE!!! I swear, that's all I've heard for the last few days from the girls at home to people in my office. I'm usually a pretty optimistic person and in a good mood, but this is starting to drag me down!

Everyone else around me is bitching, so what's YOUR rant???

I hate stupid people who, when you won't give them what they want, they try to guilt trip you and make you feel bad for it.

Like last night at work (I work at a veterinary hospital). It was a few minutes past closing, the door was locked, the open sign was off, and all the blinds were closed. The phone starts ringing like crazy, so I go up front to answer it and see the doctor's wife and kids standing outside (It was the doctor's wife calling to get someone to open the door). So I open the door, let them in, and lock it behind them. It's not like I'm going to leave my boss's wife and kids locked out in the rain and cold.

Not two minutes later, some woman with a bundle in her arms is pounding on the door. I unlock it and explain to her that the office is closed and that the doctor is in the middle of an emergency surgery and couldn't see her pet anyway (which was no lie, we had a cat with a bowel obstruction come in and we had to do an emergency exploratory surgery).

She starts arguing with me, demanding to be seen because she thinks her dog is dying. It was a little chihuahua who was basically a skeleton covered in skin. Well no $%&* the dog is dying, because this idiot didn't bother to go to a vet in time for a problem that obviously didn't happen over night. I told her again that she could not be seen and would need to go to the emergency clinic.

After that, the conversation went something like this:

"Well can't I just wait and be seen when he's finished?"

"No ma'am, we're closed."

"Could you please ask him?"

"The doctor is in surgery right now and I'm not going to interrupt him."

"You can't just ask him?"

"No. He's in surgery and we are closed. You need to go to the emergency clinic."

"But it's only a couple of minutes past and you let that other family in."

"That was the doctor's family, ma'am."

"Look, my seven year old son is in the car right now crying because his dog is sick." (BTW, people, for the record, I hate kids. This kind of thing doesn't work on me.)

"I'm sorry to hear that, but we are closed, the doctor is in surgery, and we can't see your pet."

"Do you always turn people away like this?"

"When people show up after we are closed and the doctor is in surgery, yes, we turn people away. Now I suggest that you stop wasting time and go to the emergency clinic."

Then she demands to know my name and storms off like I'm the bad guy, when she's the one who obviously waited far too long to seek help for her pet.

Oh don't get me started on what's been bothering ME lately. I could throw so much drama, it'd get old real quick.

I'm at work, so maybe later when I'm not busy I'll start dishing it all out.
Ah, I feel better already.

More little clowns.

Bastard.

Sorry, but I really am in a foul mood. I love my kids, but why does the little one always, I mean EVERY DAY, try to tell me she doesn't feel good to get out of school. (I know why, she can't stand her teacher) And why, for the past 2 weeks, no kidding, is my teenager mad at the world??? I mean, ****ty mood. Bad. Not towards me or the little one... but I have to listen to her rant about everything. It's cold. (she'll go on about this for a while) Math is stupid. (she's gone on about this for 6 months! haha!) Dumb friends getting pregnant at 16. (okay, she has a point, but why bitch about it?? It won't make them unpregnant) Then, here at work, our pensions were just reduced and our retirement insurance premium was just raised. Does it suck? Sure it does! Will everyone constantly bitching about it make it change? Hell no! Be thankful we all didn't get pink slips and sent home without jobs. Things could be so much worse... so why constantly complain? It just drags you down and the people around you. Whatever happened to trying to see the better side of things???

Whatever happened to trying to see the better side of things???

I chalk it up to different personality types. People deal with things in different ways. For a lot of people, "bitching" is a way to let off steam; and for me, at least, it often helps me figure things out. While the more "positive" types might see this as being negative, I often see people who never complain or who are always seemingly content and happy as phony. It's all very subjective.

Trust me, I can bitch with the rest of 'em. But most of the time, I choose not to. I can see where someone who is always content and happy (trust me, this is not me) seems phony, but I've had so many worse situations in my life I've realized that if there's a reason to bitch about something, try to change it. If it can't be changed, try to live with it.

GREAT thread!!! I feel SOO much better already just reading these other posts! LOL.. Mine is also work related.. and how my best friend, who is the founder and VP of our company is LEAVING next Thursday, and NONE of the "retards" who are in Management have the slightest clue, on what to do, or how to run the place, and they are all saying crap like.. "Well we don't need a inventory system (which is the foundation of our Company)- we'll just run all of the books on Excel" OMFG! They all think it's 1985 again! WTF? We have a 40,000$ + Inventory system in place, and these retards want to do away with that?? I'm SOOOO outta here..

hmmmm, where do i start, like you maria i am almost perpetually optimistic~ i mean no matter how bad it seems, things generally wrk themselves out~ but lately when it rains it pours, we had a water main break, our furnace go out & a tire blow that was so exspensive to replace it should be made of gold & this all since jan. 1st~
this is my week & morning so far:

1st off my husband woke up w/ a huge abbcessed tooth, major pain=major whining~ his wrk got new dental insurance & it took me 3 hours to find someone in our network so he could be seen, so far problem solved~

2nd, my sons xbox360 stopped wrking...AGAIN, now he doesn't play it continuously, we keep a timeclock on it~ it is the same problem that happened last fall, the eye just stopped reading the disc~ it's under warranty, so it won't cost me a thing to fix or ship, but it's another 3 weeks to get it back~ still sucks, but things could get worse~

3rd & pissing me off to no end~ i am sitting here barely able to hold it together right now i am so f$cking furious~
back in oct, my husband was notified at wrk, that someone was trying to garnish his pay for 460+ bucks~ now no one served either of us, no certified mailings either~ & we faithfully pay our bills, so we are clueless~ so the payroll lady gives me the name of the Co & it is a DR's office from a town i have never been to & a Dr. that i never physically had seen & we have insurance~ so i am running around like a freak to figure this out~ come to find out it isn't a Dr. who saw me but looked at my mammogram results back in 06~
2 months after my appt, my husband switched jobs & w/ that comes new insurance, now we didn't have coverage for 3 months, but the appt was done before his original insurance had been cancelled, so they should have paid it~ well the Dr. filed her claim 2 months after, & it was denied, but she was eventually paid on jan. of 07~ so you're thinking case closed right?, well the hubby gets his check 2 weeks ago & 200.00 is missing, a garnishment~ now i used to wrk in collectons & i know the other party has to have their day in court & a garnishment hearing~ we never got one~ somehow it fell thru the court cracks, so the hubby brings home his check & i do some calling aound & get us a hearing on the matter, they tell us to be in front of the judge tues the 22nd at 9 am & show him our paperwrk~ so we go, we sit there until 10 & the judge says if i didn't call your case come up here & let me know & you can be seen tomorrow~ i am thinking what bull**** this is, we appeared when we were told to~ so needless to say we appear the 23rd at 9 am & the judge sees us, looks at our paperwrk stating that the Dr. was paid thru insurance, so the judge terminates/releases the garnishment against us~ so payroll is to be made up today for the hubby & the judge gives him paperwrk to take to payroll, so they won't garnish anything else & paper wrk to get the initial 200.00 back~ payroll won't accept the paper from the courts, the dumbass bitch is talking out of bothsides of her you know what, she told the hubby that she spoke w/ the judge, but she told me she did not, that she spoke w/ the plaintiff, well we aren't the plaintiff, & the plaintiff is pissed they they were ruled against, pissed that they were wrong & aren't getting paid twice for services~ i called the court several times today & the case is as it stood, terminated/released~ when i call the plaintiffs office to see what my recourse is as to retreiving the money~ they say well our attorney never showed up in court & we didn't like the decision the judge made, so we want to retry this until we get the outcome that we like~
now tell me is it my fault their attorney never showed on their behalf?~ so they could see the judge rule in our favor~ & why do they think they can try & try a case because it isn't going to their liking?~ it seems to me as there should be laws against that~ & the funny thing is that 1 of the peices of paperwrk was given to me by someone who wrks for the plaintiff, she thought something was up & said it was a conflict of interest for her to help me, but she did send me a bill from the Dr. showing that they were paid a copay by me & the rest was covered by insurance, i also have a copy from the insurance co stating that they paid this out~ now the law office for the plaintiff is asking me, well how were they paid by your insurance, by check epaymnt or what & i said to them isn't that their responsibilty to have this info, it's their client who is denying pymt, not mine~ so i tried calling the Dr. herself to see if i could meet w/ her even if i had to make an appt so she could see the paperwrk i have & the order from the judge, so the Dr. could call her dogs off & her secretery won't let me speak w/ her~
they know they are doing wrong & as most folks i can't just **** out cash because they made an error, they think i am gonna just sit here & let them have nearly 500.00, & what about lost wages from wrk & such?~ like i said i am barely holding it together right now, i just want to blow!!!~

yeah, they just do that. almost all of them. i'm on my second one, myself. meanwhile, my original xbox that i've had since 2002 has never had a single error. friggin' microsoft. :distress:

actually, my 360 is out of commission right now. i got it back from the repair center in december, but of course, as soon as it came back, the cable - not under warranty, not sent in to the center - became faulty, so i have no video output. LAME.

Boy ~ can I relate to this ~ my son is going to be 16 in two weeks and that child has been a FOUL mood for weeks now. He will come home ~ barley speak when spoken too ~ fix something to eat and retire to his bat cave. I ask him if something’s wrong and he just kinda shrug’s his shoulders and growls at me. She's not really like that towards me, thank God. But then again, I'm not her birth mother. I'm just raising her right now. I think that makes a difference. Don't get me wrong, I'm flattered she comes and talks to me, but lately it's constant bitching! Oh well, I love the child like my own, and I'll listen to everything she has to tell me just so I can keep her coming to me. We're sitting here together right now playing Guitar Hero together, and she seems to be in a wonderful mood!

In their defense, I remember being they're age, and being bitchy to almost every adult I came into contact with. In my opinion, they're stress is as real as ours. Even if it seems like petty **** to us, it's real to them.

Guitar Hero and Wii always bring us together ~ I know their problems are huge to them but ...... it wouldn't hurt for him to smile every now and then :)

I wouldn't go back to my teenage years for anything...I really enjoyed my high school days. I work in a medical office. I know a lot of people are sick. But I see SOOO MANY people who are young or young enough. People as old as Lindsey and Stevie (that's how I look at them when I'm doing the paperwork and have to figure out how old they are). How did you people get this way? I'm so worn down by the youngsters in their late 50s, early 60s, that when someone who is 92 comes in, my thought is....F***ing die already! And the youngsters are usually poor, always on public assistance. It's got to be lifestyle and I bet they've not worked a lot of days in their life. What was their plan? How were they going to survive without public asistance? I do my best to take care of the oldsters... but when someone 58 walks in reeking of cigarettes...and presents his Medicaid card... it gets hard not to feel resentful. I just have a feeling he hasn't worked a lot of days in his life...and I have.

I don't know, this woman was obviously upset. People often act irrationally in those situations.

Sorry, but I have absolutely no sympathy for people who wait until their pets are practically dead before they seek help, especially if they act the way she acted.

If she had gotten in her car and spent the time driving to the emergency clinic that she instead spent arguing with me - after I'd already given her an answer - she could've been halfway there.

^^^

It could have been a money thing for her. The last ER visit we did (the 7 month old Cary Grant swallowed a rock  ) was almost $3,000. It would have been at the absolute most < $500 and more like $150 at the regular vet. I am not saying that was the case in your deal, but that does happen. So, maybe that was why she was insisting on seeing you all.

I imagine that woman may have been forced to wait until the last minute due to exorbitant vet fees. I had a receptionist at a vet's office once tell me that if I didn't have any money, I shouldn't have a cat. :| This was when I balked at their outrageous office fee when my cat was injured. I don't think there's a whole lot of sympathy coming from vets (or their staff) in general. Not sure why- is it a crappy field to work in? Anyway- my cat is fed and fixed; I think I take pretty good care of her. And fortunately I have a vet who is bare bones- *not* a money making man at all. His office looks like it's from the '70s (clean, but a tad outdated) and he NEVER does anything unnecessarily. Plus an office visit is only $20. He's a great guy and his staff is awesome.

My rant? Pain. I just got out of the hospital with a spontaneous collapsed lung (spent a week there- almost died a few times) and the pain is unrelenting. I am making my way through graduate school and my internship in a fog of pain. Gets old quick.

My rant? Pain. I just got out of the hospital with a spontaneous collapsed lung (spent a week there- almost died a few times) and the pain is unrelenting. I am making my way through graduate school and my internship in a fog of pain. Gets old quick.

UGH. Janet, are you serious? I'm so sorry honey. I hope you're feeling better soon. I complain about taking one class a semester, but I don't see how you do it full time... You'll get through it. Life is tough but you're tougher.

OUCH!!! Sorry to hear about your lung! Get well soon!

As for the prices vets charge - they want to make a living like everyone else. So, I do not fault them for that. But, there are differences in prices and they can be staggering. So, assuming the same level of care, you should go for the less expensive one. We just had Wynee da Pooh fixed. The local vet wanted to charge over $500 for the procedure. They justified this by detailing how they use a special laser and regulate the pain and other medication to make it less traumatic. The vet about 30 miles from here charged $120 total. They use essentially the same equipment, but do not do the staggard levels of meds to bring them out of the surgery. IMO, the staggaring does not really mater that much because the dog is terrified no matter what you do and they are going to hurt no matter what you do. But, to each their own. And, again, I do not know the specifics of Vicky's deal, so I am not commenting on that.

As for sympathy soming from vets, we have been very lucky in that regard. I think that many vets see so much human stupidity and disregard that they get fed up. I think they should avoid that position, but some of the things I have seen experienced breeders do makes me see how that could happen. I mean when I look at a breed like the Doberman's, I get sick when I see them. Irresponsible breeders have purposely bred to obtain such small hips that the bitches cannot give live births and walking is hindered, all in the name of winning some stupid show because that is what some idiot judge likes. Cockers are another example - that breed is supposed to be a working and hunting dog that can go in the water. Do they look like that now - IMO no. SO, I see where vets come from, but I agree that a higher road is always better, esp. when educating a pet owner (as opposed to a prof.) always in the better way IMO.

You guys are talking about exorbitant vet fees and sympathizing with this woman, but realize that the extreme emaciation of this dog would have taken many days - even a week or more - to happen. It's not like this was a hit by car or other acute emergency. The dog had been like this for a long while and she waited, not just the many days it took for the dog to get that way, but until after we were closed to do anything about it. If she had shown up during business hours, we would have seen her and the doctor may have even been willing to work out some kind of payment plan.

And about those fees (gosh, we're just robbers, aren't we?) trust me, my clinic doesn't make much money. I've seen the bank account statements, I do the end of day processing and deposits, and I also do the inventory receiving. Oh, and despite the fact that we have an in-house lab (trust me, many vets don't), a high quality ultrasound machine, xray, and other monitoring and diagnostic equipment and offer many of the types of orthopedic surgeries that other vets refer to a specialist, our standard office visit fee for a dog or cat is $28.00, and that's after our recent price increase.

If you can't afford veterinary care for a pet, then don't get one. And if something happens where your situation changes (you lose your job, etc.) and you can no longer care for them financially, then find them another good home. It's the right thing to do for your pet.

I'd add that letting your fingers do the walking and checking prices at five or six different vets likely will let you find one you could afford. Also, if you speak to the vet and explain your situation, they may give you a discount. So, there are options.

Oh, absolutely. My vet is 20 miles away, but we like him & he's much cheaper than the one 2 miles down the road from us.

Also, lots of places run low cost vaccination & routine checkup clinics. There is simply no excuse not to provide basic vet care for a pet.

But, I'm a crazy dog lady who would starve myself before I'd let my dog starve, so...

I dunno. There's a huge difference in not being able to afford to take your pet to a regular visit and regular maintenance and not being able to afford exorbitant emergency fees. Some vets may be honest and charge fair prices, but many are not. It's a fact. I think my vet is a little bit on the more expensive side, but I like her and trust her with my dog. I don't like it when I buy supplies (like ear powder for instance) and then turn around see them for half the price at petsmart or wherever, but that's my fault for buying them at the vet's office, and it won't happen again. The only thing that really irks me, I guess, is how they push Science Diet food at x-times the price.

Have you ever asked your vet if they would be willing to match prices? The hospital where I work has a policy of matching the prices found on the internet or elsewhere (provided that the price is not below our cost) and will even ship the medication if convenience is the deciding factor between purchasing it with us or elsewhere. We'd rather make less profit on an item than none at all.

As for the pushing of the food - if you're talking about Prescription food, there's a huge difference between what is sold at vets and what is found in the stores and a reason why it is by prescription only. Also, when it comes to the prices you pay for regular pet food, there is a huge difference in quality between brands like Science Diet, Eukanuba, and Royal Canin versus other, lower cost, brands. People have it in their heads that it's all a money making scheme, but the fact of the matter is that if you feed higher quality foods, you're less likely to encounter problems like food allergies, urinary crystal formation, pancreatitis, and other food related issues.

That's not to say that there aren't veterinarians out there who care nothing for people (or animals, for that matter) and care only about money. I know this. I've worked with a few of them. So don't take me the wrong way. I'm not blindly defending the people in my field of work.

As for not being able to afford "exorbitant" emergency fees. Like I said, this wasn't something that just happened. She could easily have avoided those fees by simply showing up when we were open.

I agree that people should not get pets if they can't afford them. I see a lot of that; people getting puppies or kittens because they're cute, and then they become a burden once the basic needs have to be met (neutering, shots, etc). That being said, I could not imagine giving up my cat or dog if my situation changed temporarily. That seems harsh and unrealistic to me.

In my case, I had an emergency situation that I was unprepared to deal with financially. So, I called around until I found someone I could work with (and while making those desperate phone calls, I spoke with the receptionist who made the comment about pet ownership). This was before I got our dog, when my cat was a kitten. And as I mentioned earlier, I totally lucked out with the vet I found. He is a LONG drive from our house, but not only is he inexpensive, he's a good man. I guess the moral of the story is if you have a pet, ask your vet how he/she handles emergency situations.

Vicky, I hope you don't ever think my rants on vets are ever a personal dig at you. They're not; my husband worked as a vet tech all through his 20s and really saw bad things. Perhaps it's just the area we live in.

That's understandable! I haven't thought about asking them to match prices though. Really, I just get the medicines and treatments.. like the Malaseb pads, oticare powder, ointments and things like that.. at the vet, and get the things I need more frequently.. shampoos, grooming supplies, food, treats, vitamins.. at the pet store.

As for the pushing of the food - if you're talking about Prescription food, there's a huge difference between what is sold at vets and what is found in the stores and a reason why it is by prescription only. Oh yeah, I definitely understand about the prescription food. I'm just talking about regular Science Diet, which is available elsewhere, obviously. My little one loves Eukanuba the most. Unfortunately, I have to drive an hour to get her food, biscuits, and treats; My vet's hospital only carries Science Diet. I've looked at the Royal Canin, but haven't picked it up.. it seems like it was quite breed specific (Lily is a schnauzer/poodle mix), and I think I remember the protein being a bit lower than the Eukanuba. It is super important to feed them quality food. My sister's dog (a Westie) has the WORST allergies, and we have tried everything to help him not be so itchy. The only thing that has ever truly worked is Nutro Max dog food. Nothing else, not even medicines, special shampoos, or other treatments. He's to the point now that he doesn't give a crap about what you're eating, even if you offer it to him. He's a Nutro only guy. It's like he knows he'll start itching like crazy if he eats something else.

As for not being able to afford "exorbitant" emergency fees. Like I said, this wasn't something that just happened. She could easily have avoided those fees by simply showing up when we were open.

Yeah really, that is 100% her fault for letting her dog get to the point that she'd need to take it to the emergency clinic for emaciation. And like you said, she wasted a lot of time standing there arguing with you that she could have been using to get to the clinic. Emaciation, like you said, doesn't just happen instantaneously. She should have had the gumption to get her dog in earlier (and spare herself the emergency needs) instead of waiting until it was on the brink. People just don't have common sense about things anymore, it seems like. You gotta watch the fuzzybutts like little babies, 'cuz they are. I have a general rule: if Lily seems slightly different.. eating habits, potty time, vomit, whatever.. I start doing a little research online, then I call and ask questions to see if I should bring her in. I don't know if that annoys the vet people or not, but the fact that they answer me honestly keeps me going back to the same hospital.

Yeah, it's a Westie. If you get a Westie, expect to deal with allergies. Seriously, we carry these special hypo-allergenic dog treats from Purina called Gentle Snackers. Guess what breed is pictured on the package?

That's ridiculous that your vet sells regular Science Diet for more than the pet stores. Most veterinary clinics don't even carry maintenance diets because the average person doesn't think to go to a vet to buy dog or cat food unless their animal has a medical condition that requires special food; they think of either the pet store or the grocery store instead. So if you're going to carry those diets, you really need to give your clients a reason to buy it from you.

Oh come on -- you know those vibrant colors in Purina Beneful are so put there for flavor and because the they entice the dogs and cats

For those not in the know, the colors occur pretty much solely in the cheapest quality food becaue food dye is WAY cheaper than providing better ingrediant and stupid humans go "LOOK AT THE PRETTY COLORS -- I BET THAT TASTES YUMMY" -- when, in reality, they do nothing to enhance the quality of the food and IMO and the opinion of may others, the colors are harmful to the animal.

I basically hate people. There are a LOT of good ones out there, but the majority are pretentious, self absorbed, holier than thou individuals. Like when you ask people a question, or try to befriend someone and they don't give you the time of day. Not even a "F" off or anything. And even if it WERE an "F" off, it's like "just who the F do you think YOU are????"
75% I venture out into the world for goodness it backfires. Then you try to find solace and good online....it backfires. Man, I'm gonna be hermit w/ 80 cats, some dogs and a hamster.
Just in general we are in a socieety of ME ME ME. The story of the person @ the vet office....the "ex" etc.
A funny thing I like to do. I live where I work, so frequently get the knock on the door requesting my time. My time is done @ 6p.m, so bugger off. Anyway, the next time I deal w/ those people, I find where they work. I ask them if say for example they work @ Safeway....if when the store is closed, but I need a carton of milk, since they work there, might they let me in. Little subtle things like that. Generally the person looks @ me like I am on crack, but then it dawns on them as they are giving me "that look" that my question is a reflection of their previous stupidity. Part of me feels bad rubbing it back at them, but if people just stopped and thought for a second tempers wouldn't escalate in a myriad of situations. Alas....people don't stop to think however, and for that, we'll all have daily "UGH'S!!!!!!" lol

F*ck, Sharon, you know my husband just lost his job, but I'm not giving my pets away for Christ's sake! You're totally misunderstanding me here. I'd be willing to bet that you (and Sarah and Dee and Jannie) would do everything in your power to care for your pet(s) if your financial situation took a turn for the worse - borrow money, go without things, rearrange your budget, work out a payment plan with a vet, credit cards, etc. - because you guys are PREPARED to do that for your pet. You knew when you got your pet(s) that you would be responsible for caring for them, feeding them and taking them to the vet when needed. YOU made the conscious decision to take on that responsibility, as did I. I think we all remember Homer's love for Cash - he loved that dog so much, and it put him in debt to do it, but he got him the care he needed, he didn't let him suffer. Vet bills are a huge reason that my mother, after the last of her 5 cats died, decided not to get any more pets - EVER. And she has had at least 1 pet for almost her entire life. Is it tough on her? Yes. But she knows in her heart that she simply can't afford it anymore.

That's quite a different story than letting your pet starve, or suffer in pain for days, weeks, or months, because you couldn't (or wouldn't) pay the vet, which it seems this woman did (we don't even know if this was actually the case, she could have just been a neglectful assh*le.) Would it be an incredibly hard decision to give up your pet? God, yes, I'm not saying it's easy. But it would be the right thing to do. If Bubba got really sick and needed tremendous amount of care & we literally could NOT afford it in any way, I would have to be strong enough & love him enough to seek out help for him in some way, rather than let him suffer because I couldn't take him to the vet. To keep him with me would be totally selfish on my part.

No, you're right. This time.

How many people do you know who one day decide "I think I'll get a dog" or "the kids really want a kitten" or something like that? Getting a pet is not a decision to be taken lightly, like it's no big deal. It's a HUGE responsibility, and people should really think it through & do their research before taking it on. When we decided on a Boxer, I had read up on the breed for WEEKS before we adopted Bub. We know what we could be in for - skin problems (including cancers), hip problems, eye issues, heart disease, stomach problems, etc. We decided it was worth it. Most people don't bother thinking ahead to the "what ifs," they just assume everything will always be fine. THAT'S what I have a problem with. THAT'S what pisses me off.

I hope I've explained myself a bit better. If not, I give up.

Very true, the idea that the woman didn't have the money to spend is pure speculation, since the subject of money never came up during the confrontation. The only thing she said about the emergency clinic (which I apparently omitted from my original post) was to ask where it was and if it was the closest place to go. She never said "I can't afford that."

And here's what really gets me about this situation: obviously this wasn't a case of the lady simply not feeding her dog, otherwise she wouldn't have bothered to come at all. The two most likely causes that I can come up with for that kind of weight loss are either a foreign body stuck somewhere in the G.I. tract - in which case the first signs would have been severe vomiting and inappetance (refusal to eat) - or diabetes, in which case it would have taken at least a few weeks for the dog to get that underweight, since the dog would still be eating. To me, all signs point to neglect, but maybe it's just that I'm one of those jaded, unsympathetic workers in the veterinary field.

Humans? Meh. Not so much.

I have a huge amount of respect for anyone who works with animals and have always admired the work you do Vicky in taking care of them. You must be a pretty special person.

You really shouldn’t feel the need to defend vets. Fact is, very few (unlike Doctors) are driving ‘round in sports cars and living in the smart parts of town. In my experience the vast majority of them are putting money back into caring for the animals they see. I think it really is a vocation, for those who choose to work with animals. I recently got a dog and he’s the first pet I’ve had. At the vets, I bought several things like food, toys and a lead that yes, I could have bought cheaper elsewhere, but I can understand how the practice uses the profit on those items to keep the charges on medicines manageable for most customers.

The Chicago Canine Rescue, where I got my pet, explained up front what the animal might cost me. Aside from the $200 charge to them, they went through what the yearly vet treatments would be and then through the estimates of cost if my dog became ill. Having opted to take an older dog, that was an important consideration. So at least I had the information to make a judgement as to whether I could afford the financial cost in addition to the time I needed to make available to properly look after a dog.

I guess my point is that having a pet isn’t like getting a car or a house. If your financial circumstances change, just like children, partners and parents, you just wouldn’t contemplate getting rid of them. That would be heartbreaking I think, and like Sarah I would starve myself to death first (and I’ve only had my dog a week or so). It just isn’t an option for most people, and that is the point I think Sharon was making. The UK and Europe has some pretty good pet insurance schemes I understand. Maybe that’s the thing we need to see more of in the US.

You really shouldn’t feel the need to defend vets. Fact is, very few (unlike Doctors) are driving ‘round in sports cars and living in the smart parts of town.

Definitely - though many vets do drive sports cars, but I think a lot of that is more mid-life crisis than anything else. One of the vets that I used to work for will, as of this year, have been practicing for 50 years. Does he drive some fancy car? No. He tools around in little beat-up pickup truck that's probably as old as I am. And none of vets I've worked with have fancy houses, either. They're nice houses, sure, but they're certainly not mansions or in exclusive neighborhoods.

BTW.. Kudos to you for adopting an older pet instead of a cute little puppy. I wish more people would do that. It's heartbreaking to think of all the wonderful adult dogs and cats in shelters that will never find homes because people just walk right past to get to the puppies and kittens. :(

HEY, MY NAME IS SHARON..BUT I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR WHOMEVER YOU ARE TALKING TO IS NOT ME. I set off on a rant regarding people who don't take care of themselves and end up in our office on the dole. About animals, we are on are second Beagle. His name is Lennon cause he was born on my favoroite Rock Star's birthday. Lennon sleeps between us every night..under the covers. I'm pretty sure we treat Lennon better than a lot of people treat their kids. So, SKCIN...let me know you weren't talking to me. Lennon does absolutely depend on me...a full dish of food and filtered water every morning. How did my name end up in this?

Sure it is, Sharon. But I would hope that I could be mature & unselfish enough to be able to make the right choice if ever I became financially unable to care for my pets properly. I would have to find them someone who could.

Animals DEPEND on their owners. If you can't handle it financially, then don't get a pet. I love animals - LOVE them. But if I couldn't afford them, I would NOT have any. No doubt.

My rant is a rant that will never get old. A rant so wonderful and timeless that I'm sure my children's children's children will have the same rant at least once in their lives. Yes, it's that great.

PEOPLE WHO DON'T RETURN PHONECALLS.

What the hell, man? I'm supposed to go into the studio in a week or so, and the people I'm supposed to work with have yet to return any of my calls or emails. Pisses me the **** off. I went out to a club last night with the sole intent of reading off the one musician, but of course, the douche wasn't there. So annoyed. So at that point, I had to find out through other people what was going on, which I hate doing - I cannot call people I don't know without feeling sick at my stomach. But I still don't even know the exact date and time of this first initial "meeting," so I'm pretty much being forced to change my schedule to "TBA" and wait for the phone to ring. What bothers me the most is that I'm not even the one initiating this whole debacle - I wanted to start recording in the spring, but everyone else is on my ass to do everything right now, yet no one is giving me any answers.

Bastards. They'll pay.

There is more than 1 Sharon on the board. I quoted the person to whom I was speaking. That's typically what the quote function is for - to respond to 1 specific person or post. I don't think anyone else got the impression that I was talking to you, so no worries there.

get used to it, grasshopper. people in our line of work/interest suck at responsibility. whenever you feel like getting mad about it, you should break out the bottle and take a swig of vodka instead. it really does make everything better.

my personal favorite is vikingfjord, a 6x distilled glacier water / potato vodka from Norway. mmmm.

i'm due in the studio, too, but i'm the one being a flake. ;)

You're welcome, Ms. Bloody Defensive.

F*ck, Sharon, you know my husband just lost his job, but I'm not giving my pets away for Christ's sake! You're totally misunderstanding me here.

Actually Paula I didn't know that and I'm really sorry to hear it. And I was misunderstanding you, although I can understand why someone might delude themselves their pet doesn't need to go to the vet because they fear the cost.

And for the record my name is Sharon and Paula/Skcin was addressing me.
There's also another Sharon on this board, Sulamith, who I don't think posts much anymore, but there are a few of us here.

I just realized that, actually - I thought you were one of the people that I had discussed it with privately. Sorry that I made that assumption, I didn't mean to imply that you were being thoughtless about it, only that I know what you've gone through.

Obviously not the fan she claims to be...

this from the Patty forum "Emmylou said this was the final show of this tour "for about six months" but we all definitely plan on performing together again in this format, even if I have to personally bribe everyone to keep a future chunk of dates open.

so there is still hope they will head west. And, I may not remember the 80's but I won't forget to go to this show!

I know, I know. You'd think that after how many years I'd be used to it, but.. ugh. It's so not right. lol

I have no good vodka, which really upsets me. I have a bottle of Cherry Wave and half of a bottle of Nikolai, but that's it. I want some Ciroc, especially after seeing that commercial that came out around New Year's.

hahaha. i would still go vikingfjord. ciroc is "only" 5x distilled. (still good, but there's just something about the 6x of vikingfjord. i don't have to cringe when i drink it straight.) i don't understand why vikingfjord is cheaper, but hey. whatever. it kicks stoli's ass. ;)

Aw cummon - SOTU addresses are fun! You can:

- Play the SOTU drinking game (many varieties, such as: http://wonkette.com/349790/the-eighth-annual-gw-bush-sotu-drinking-game)

- Treat it as a free aerobics class. When they stand and clap, you do too!

- Combine both of the above, and submit your video to YouTube. That way it's fun for others as well.

:D
