I'm looking for stage shots from the RAL tour. I know they're not high on everyone's list of favorite images of Stevie, but it is a significant Stevie era and needs to be documented. Maybe you might have a pic and you might think "oh no, this is too awful, I wouldn't post this pic of her looking that bad, that can't possibly be what Pete is looking for". Well, think again! It may have been wild, it may have been woolly, but some of us liked her that way.

Thanks so much everybody. Liked 'em an awful lot. I'm in awe of what RAL goodies people have had in their closets all this time and were afraid to post. That's what I was put on this Earth for: to keep the flame of RAL kindled and close to people's hearts. It's a lonely journey, and sometimes there are only one set of platform footprints on the beach. And I've even asked Stevie why that was so. And she said to me "Welllllllllllll, baby, whoah baby! Well, that's when I carried youuuuuuuuuuu!!"

You think she looks bloated and sad? You might need to view some OSOTM, BTM or Timespace footage. Bloated, bland, and looking just miserable and tired.

Sure, for her own sake I am glad she is still alive and able to still perform. Doesn't mean I don't miss the energy, fire and spontaneity of those nutty RAL shows though. Rock and Roll is Rock and Roll, and Vegas is Vegas. It's like comparing an apple to an orange.

Now I'm going to put a long string of smiley things here which is always good for softening up a post that someone might otherwise take umbrage to.

you seem to be forgetting that RAL and klonopin stevie are not the only options. there were 10 years of stevie performances pre-RAL where she was, for the most part, fiery, healthy looking, and in tune - far from a vegas act. rock and roll is not about shrieking vocals and being so out of it you can't even remember your own lyrics.

Well, gee. It started out good, and alot of people were getting into it. Now the pendulum has swung in the other direction and everyone is jumping on that bandwagon.

There's no denying what happened in '86 folks. Sweeping it under the carpet pleasantly doesn't make it go away. She did some coke, she drank some brandy, and so did Ozzy. And so did Billy Idol, and so did Crosby, Stills and Nash. So did the girls from Bananarama! Why should we edit the years of her life away? She doesn't! I don't hear any major regret in her voice about the 'cocaine and brandy' years. What I do hear, is how money she spent. And how large she lived. And what a party it all was. And how intense her love affairs were. You want to sweep things under the carpet? Sweet away 1987-1994. Those are years that Stevie would definately WANT us to sweep away. Yet, there are fans here who love the laconic, dull, dilated pupils, satin bathrobe with shoulder pads and weird hat era.

This is my thread. I started it, I got all the feedback I could have asked for and more, and am immensly pleased with it. Check back later for a new thread about some other Stevie topic from someone else. But this one served it's purpose and for that I'm glad. More smileys! Sparkle everyone!

What's odd is that at the time, I didn't know she looked bad- I thought she looked awesome, fabulous, beautiful- LOL.

OMG! Me too! Really, one has to look at these pics in their original context too. In 1986, make-up styles were different, hair styles were different, and even technology was different. Perhaps, back then, there were no 'ear monitors' or teleprompters. Maybe, without an ear monitor, one had to really scream their vocals out to hear them over the band. I know MY kohl mascara would be runny if I spent 2 hours yelling over Waddy's guitar licks.
Maybe in 1986, there were less 'stylists' in Stevie's entourage to constantly sponge on concealer and powder like now.

I don't know how old any of you are. But in my case, if I were to scan pages from my H.S yearbook (class of '88) you'd all have a good laugh at the hair, outfits and makeup.

More smiley's. Because who doesn't love smiley's?

She does look terrible in these pics, I don't care if it was 1986 it's not like everyone in 1986 looked terrible or strung out.

No really, we did. :laugh: J/K of course. But seriously, she didn't look THAT bad at the time. Maybe the RAL shows I saw weren't from the heinous era, or again- maybe I was just so enthralled with her, I didn't care.

It's subjective. I think she looks terrible in any stage shots from the 'Shake The Cage', OSOTM, BTM or Timespace tours.

I think she looks terrible in any stage shots from the 'Shake The Cage', OSOTM, BTM or Timespace tours.I do, too, & I'd add reunion, Enchanted, Millennium, Shangri-La, Say You Will, Two Voices, Three Voices, However Many Voices, Gold Dust, etc. She doesn't interest me at all, visually or musically, from the 1987 tour all the way to the present. I don't go for the Aunt Steph look or sound. I want the Empress of the Pagodas. The 1986 tour was hot. But my favorite solo tour was still the 1983 tour, musically & visually, although "Edge of Seventeen" was better on the 1986 tour. The 1983 tour has the strong edge for "Outside the Rain," Stand Back," "I Need to Know," "Beauty & the Beast," "How Still My Love" & "Rhiannon."

Cool photo of the San Diego ticket up there. Pete brings up a good point about having to put a little shriek into the vocal above the din of the band in 1986. In San Diego, especially, I remember she was virtually inaudible for the first several songs -- the band was so loud & the mix was so ... er, not in her favor. Even so, I admit Stevie was shrieking & growling on tour, but that's exactly the appeal for some of us.

Also cool photo of Stevie & Tom, above. That must be the Tempe 1985 show? It isn't from Mulholland Tomorrow & I doubt it's from the Sanctuary Now gig, & I don't think she appeared with Tom (other than with Dylan in February) on her tour at all. I think the only full-blown Heartbreakers she did at the time was the Tempe show (she didn't show for their gig at the Forum).

I really do like the RAL tour too and she didn't look horrible in all of the photos from that tour.

I do, too, & I'd add reunion, Enchanted, Millennium, Shangri-La, Say You Will, Two Voices, Three Voices, However Many Voices, Gold Dust, etc. She doesn't interest me at all, visually or musically, from the 1987 tour all the way to the present. I don't go for the Aunt Steph look or sound. I want the Empress of the Pagodas. The 1986 tour was hot. But my favorite solo tour was still the 1983 tour, musically & visually, although "Edge of Seventeen" was better on the 1986 tour. The 1983 tour has the strong edge for "Outside the Rain," Stand Back," "I Need to Know," "Beauty & the Beast," "How Still My Love" & "Rhiannon."
Cool photo of the San Diego ticket up there. Pete brings up a good point about having to put a little shriek into the vocal above the din of the band in 1986. In San Diego, especially, I remember she was virtually inaudible for the first several songs -- the band was so loud & the mix was so ... er, not in her favor. Even so, I admit Stevie was shrieking & growling on tour, but that's exactly the appeal for some of us.

Also cool photo of Stevie & Tom, above. That must be the Tempe 1985 show? It isn't from Mulholland Tomorrow & I doubt it's from the Sanctuary Now gig, & I don't think she appeared with Tom (other than with Dylan in February) on her tour at all. I think the only full-blown Heartbreakers she did at the time was the Tempe show (she didn't show for their gig at the Forum).

How could you forget DREAMS? Dreams was AMAZING on the Wild Heart tour. I LOVE the bass/organ introduction, especially the jazzy carefree playing on the organ. Incredible.

You do realize though, that the pic of Stevie in red was a frame from one of the numerous studio re-takes that Cream Cheese edited into the Red Rocks video, and not of her actual performance at that venue.

I really do like the RAL tour too and she didn't look horrible in all of the photos from that tour.

I guess so, if you consider Stevie throwing everything she had into a Joplin-esque 2 hours each night for a several month tour. To me, she never looked or sounded more engaged with her performances. Subsequent tours gave me the impression that she could step on a garden hoe (with platform reeboks) and never feel it crack flat into her face.

Honey, there's no comparison to any other tour after this point in her history. None.

You're right, the close-ups were filmed at the same time as the Big Love video was filmed and the Tango promo's were photographed (around february 1987), she had red streaks in her hair plus it was a lot shorter on top.

It's so friggin' obvious, they didn't even try to make her look the same!

I realize that it was the 80's and everything was "big" at that time, but I couldn't tell if all that hair was Stevie's or if some of it were extensions. She had some wild hair during the "Rock A Little"era. But it was cool though.

I'm thinking that some of the pics we've seen from the RAL shows demonstrates cases of shorter hair than one thinks from Stevie. Remember, in the mid-80's alot of girls were doing the permed and layered and shellacked look, so the hair was tighter to the head. LOL, I even remember my sister in 1986 spending forever in our bathroom trying to get the look right with a blow dryer and a really HUGE round hairbrush, a can of hairspray by her side. It was every tour after this one, that the hair got really blonde, really long, and in some cases really big. Extensions too, no doubt. But I'm not good with spotting them unless they're obvious like the ones Unfitney Spears has been sporting lately.

I think they shot some close-ups/retakes after the concert too. Remember that story about Mick staying with her for hours afterwards in the rain (from his book maybe? I can't remember)?

It's totally wild to see her in that- it makes her look more like Tusk Stevie than RAL Stevie.

Overall, the clothes are awesome, but her face just looks terrible in most of the shots. Total train wreck :cool: (although wasn't she much more "together" at some shows than others, maybe the first few? I have some "gold dust womans" that are good, and not too messed-up sounding :shrug:)
