It would really have to depend on my mood but I could pretty much always watch:
In the Company of Wolves
Alice in Wonderland (any version)
Gothic
I know, it's three not one.

No they are good movies, just not what I expected.
Btw, my real favourite movies are Harold & Maude, Rushmore, Brazil, Jaws, A Touch Of Evil, Night Of The Hunter and Harvey.
Actually maybe It's A Wonderful Life too.
Okay. Why didn't you expcet them?
And honestly, The Working Girl is an awful movie, I just love it because it represents everything that was ridiculous about the eighties and early nineties. The good times I missed out on. :(
Music of the Heart is just amazing though. I love me some Meryl Streep.

Working Girl is great! Funny, smart, brilliant comic performances. I'm old enough to have seen it in the cinema when it first came out too.
I guess I didn't expect those choices from you because they are the sort of movies my mum would cite as her faves. I think when I was your age my favourites were angsty teen stuff like Heathers, Pump Up The Volume (I even had the soundtrack!) and The River's Edge.

 Lucky you! My favorite line is when Sigourney Weaver is talking about Jack proposing, and she's listening reasons, the last of which is: "I am, after all...Me. Gets me every time! :]
I don't know. Teen movies these day's suck. I suppose American Pie is to us what, hm, Star Wars or Sixteen Candles was to you. And when I think "great movie," American Pie doesn't come to mind.

I think when I was your age my favourites were angsty teen stuff like Heathers, Pump Up The Volume (I even had the soundtrack!) and The River's Edge. When I was a teen, my favorite movies were of the French poetic-realist school: Renoir's "Les Bas-Fonds" & "Nana" & the Carné-Prévert "Le Jour Se Lève" & "Drôle de Drame." But as an adult, you must put away childish things, so I outgrew those films & moved on in my early 20s to the Technicolor Bavarian snickerdoodles of Powell & Pressburger: "The Tales of Hoffmann," "Black Narcissus" & "The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp."
Now in my rapidly advancing twilight, I prefer the tense, embalmed mise en scène of Douglas Sirk: "All That Heaven Allows," "Written on the Wind" & "Magnificent Obsession."

hmm, Interview was good, but a bit too Hollywoodish with the casting choices and not darkly brooding enough for me:D
I thought Brad played Louis quite dark and brooding. Cruise was okay as Lestat but I would've loved to see someone else in that role. He just didn't have the stature for it but he did a decent job. Although now that I know how psycho he is that is hard to admit. ;) Antonio was great as ... crap, what's-his-name? Perfectly cast as seductive and cunning.

Of course the film had to be changed a bit when River Phoenix died as he was due to be in it - in fact didn't they begin filming with him in it? I can't remember now what part he was slated for but I recall they rewrote some of it after his death.
I always thought that Pitt and Cruise would have been better swapping roles in the film.

Christian Slater took the role River was slated for - the interviewer. I'm not sure if they started with River or changed anything, I can't remember. I think I might have to watch that one again soon. I agree, I thought Brad would've made a better Lestat. He wasn't a big enough star at the time though. Depp probably would've been excellent as he is so talented, dark, and nearly pretty.

......yes it aint really Walt Disney is it:laugh:
Sadly my best friend and I can do the entire dialogue for about the first hour and a half cos we watched it so much. Even now we do bits of it but with better American accents. A classic film but I don't find it as stomach churning as say Goodfellows. I can cope with people being shot but all that beating people to a pulp is very unpleasant:laugh:! Dogville is the one I have to get psyched up for. A really tough film!

Are you kidding??? Did you read the book? Armand was supposed to be a very youthful (teenage) vampire. Don't get me wrong, I love Antonio Banderas - he is damn hot!! But Armand was not Latino neither. It was total miscasting. That whole movie sucked 'cuz the casting was so bad. Louis was suppose to be a tall slim dark-haired man. Lestat was a blonde - Tom Cruise bit!!!! Julian Sands was Anne Rice's initial choice but they waited so long to make the movie JS had gotten too old. That whole movie was a total letdown to Anne Rice fans who had read the book. Worse book-to-film ever! I was living in NO when they filmed it - my house is in the movie - and everyone was saying how horirble it turned out. 13 y/o Kirsten Dunst as Claudia?? Claudia was supposed to be 5 years old. They took liberties and Rice initially was pissed and said so publicly. But, she later recanted and said she liked it.
I lived in NOLA when they were filming it. It was way cool.
As for the movie, I thought that while it was different than the book, it, on its own, was good if not great. But, to each their own.

Somebody had Europa Europa on their list. I watched it last night. It is about a jewish boy in the 1940's who is pretending to be Aryan. I thought the most powerful part was when he was riding the trolley through the ghetto, and looking through the filthy window, horrified at the conditions of his own people.
I did not know there had been such a thing as jewish ghettos right in the city. I thought you were either free or in a concentration camp in the country.

 I knew there was yet ANOTHER reason I loved you Paula.
Tied for 1st are:
Sid & Nancy or Goodfellas
I've seen them both easily 100x's or more, and can recite from start to finish. If they are on TV I can't turn them off. I LOVE these movies!
Runners up are:
Brazil (an equally fuginfantastic film that I can't complteley recite but GD it's a good one!)
The Handmaid's Tale (Bought it recently & revisited, it's not as disturbing as it was the 1st time I saw it, but it's still a good flick)
Miracle Mile Just a good movie. Great to speculate as it unfolds.
Movies that are some of my fav views, but I don't currently have them, and some I haven't seen in years...starting w/ one that I guess made it to DVD recently.
Baxter (The Talking Dog) For all of you into "off" films, this is a must. Not for the morally faint of heart though. Think Solendz's (sp?) "Happiness" ...another must see...you are so disturbed by the fact that you are watching it, but there is not a snowballs chance in hell you'll turn it off.
"The Quiet Earth"-Sorta Omega Man/I am Legend but w/out the Zombies.
Classics include All About Eve, Imitation of Life & Grand Hotel.

That was I. IMO it's one of the very few excellent movies on the Holocaust. I will soon be revising a paper on it, specifically on how the makers depart from the book in just about every (biographical) detail but still promote it as a "true story."
I did not know there had been such a thing as jewish ghettos right in the city.
Ghettoization was a major stage in the execution of the Final Solution in eastern Europe - the Nazis did not really attempt it in the west.
The most famous one was in Warsaw, & you might remember the (really bad) David Schwimmer TV-movie, "Uprising", depicting the revolt there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw_ghetto_uprising
I thought you were either free or in a concentration camp in the country.
It's estimated that over 2 million (of the 6 million) were executed by mobile killing squads, locals, etc. - sometimes in mass shootings into rivers or ditches, such as at Baba Yar in Ukraine, or as depicted in the otherwise weak movie, Everything is Illuminated. Several million died in the death camps, and a smaller number in the concentration camps.
As for Europa, Europa, there was some controversy about the refusal to enter it into the Best Foreign Film category.
Thanks for the opportunity to write about it here.
