Vanessa- I just wanted to say I LOVE that screenshot from GYOW on the Mirage video. I always swoon when they show that close-up of her singing/looking at Lindsey (I think she is, anyway) - to me, it is the absolute most beautiful she has ever been.

Herewith, my non-post. Down, post count, down!

Word to the overly verbal.
Yikes, I just ruined it. Hey, did you know you can't "not post" if you type something in here? Weird. I don't think sizing down works. It's tiny, but it's still a post. And this board doesn't recognize commands, like, "Down, post count, down!" You would think it would. But it doesn't. I'm sure this is a serious problem someone should address with the moderators. Like, "Why can't I post, but tell the post not to be a post, but it still registers as a post, when I was trying to antiposto?" Would be the question.

I'm sure it's just a technical problem with the server...or a problem with Italian appetizers...I'm not sure, I'm not a genius and whatnot. I like appetizers, though. I also like negative posting, or bizarro posting, depending on your bent. Hopefully the mods will figure out this whole non posting conundrum shortly. I wait with baited breath. While some love to celebrate their, say, 900th post, all of which I'm sure were very interesting, I long to justify my 25000th as being necessary. And I mean "long" as in I thought they were necessary before, inasmuch as anything is necessary, but am trying to be humble. Also I don't care.

Which brings me around to my point, which is that I would be so happy if Kathy had some kind of tricky Coyote alternate identity like some have intimated in this thread. That would be awesome times seven. I would laugh my ass off. If it was all a ruse. In fact, I'm wholeheartedly hoping it was all a ruse. That's the best case scenario outcome for those posts. Like, is it Carne? Or someone else funny and tricky and banned? Cause that is the only way the whole thing could turn out interesting.
Cause I think we all know that no one cares how many posts you have except you, and the people who would want to make fun of you about how many posts you have. Fun making tending towards the large end, rather than the small. No one says, "haha, you only have 100 posts!!"
And either way people only care when they are trying to make some snarky point. Which is funny. Or not. It could go either way, with the post count.
Mostly, though, people don't care. That is why I'm hoping K1 is actually a super disguise for someone who is making fun of caring about how many posts they got. Cause that would be funny. And surprising, which is always nice.

Uh...but if it isn't a joke persona, er...kudos to Kathy for having 900 things to say! Hurrah!:woohoo:

Yeah, I think the timeout is an artifact from the Old Ledge. Before bb style when threads were really threads in the stacked sense. Lots of people posting simultaneously, and links would get crossed and posts would get eaten. Back then, there were lots of NT posts... which is to say that people held their conversations in the "subject line" of the post with no text inside. Very cluttered and hectic.

I miss it.

I have really tried to stay away from posting here...but it's become one of the more enjoyable threads to read.

I must admit that I will never catch Kathy1. She's what keeps the Ledge alive and "never is heard a discouraging word" from her. She seems nice, and genuinely innocent....

Q: Do other boards give status for posts? ....like say....on ebay...one becomes a Power Seller? Can one become a Power Poster? Just curious.

So....if she wants to celebrate.... I say we celebrate and in true football pool fashion....we have a pool to guess when she will hit 1000......

Here's Lenny "Cat Burglar" Bernstein discussing motivic development in the opening mov't of the Eroica -- the name of which, incidentally, is now on my license plate! $45 a year it's costing me just to confuse tailgaters with a word that they think says "erotica."

Why not say "I sometimes have trouble interpreting you. I fall into the vat of misunderstanding."? Although I like that I have to look up words to understand you. I don't think there's a verb for hermeneutical though, at least not according to m-w.com.

Why not say "I sometimes have trouble interpreting you. I fall into the vat of misunderstanding."? Because then there's no joke. The joke is that I'm telling Carrie I don't understand her in a way that itself can't be understood or even parsed traditionally.

Although I like that I have to look up words to understand you. I don't think there's a verb for hermeneutical though, at least not according to m-w.com.I'm being silly & goofy there too. You're reading me too literalmindedly. I infuse an overwhelming dose of what the French call jouissance. I bestow both pleasure & pain. I tread a harrowingly fine line between prose & poetry. My Ledge posting style is strongly influenced by Sterne, especially by "Tristram Shandy" -- not the English language's first but certainly one of its wildest cock & bull stories.

that has to be one of the most disturbing pictures i've ever seen.

David
02-26-2008, 08:51 PM
that has to be one of the most disturbing pictures i've ever seen. It's from the movie "Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story" directed by Michael Winterbottom. I recommend it WITH reservations. The first half hour or so was quite good: a witty adaptation of the Sterne work with a contemporary feel & a humorously knowing wink. But
the movie split in two: half of it continued to follow Sterne & the other half turned cock 'n' bull with the movie production company filming the scenario on location. It's all an unusual experiment in storytelling & framing; the two elements swap their traditional places. But I wanted more of the Sterne & less of the film company -- the jokes are a lot better in the former, as you would probably guess, & the latter element palls well before the end credits. Obviously, Winterbottom's point, such as it is, is to reveal the bits of Tristram Shandy & Captain Toby & so forth in all of us, &c. But, really, so what? It's an excellent cast, at any rate, particularly the guys -- although Gillian Anderson has a superb cameo & the best punchline.

Right now, I'm watching "The Day After Tomorrow." It's rotten. It's nothing but a video game; its effects are video-game effects, it has the tempo of a video game, & it has the jerky, childish, druggy kineticism of a video game. The fact that there are a few actors (a very few) standing around delivering dialog means nothing. If all movies were like this, there would be no art form. Whatever you'd call it might still be massively popular, but not worth thinking about or writing about or studying or being swept up in. "The Day After Tomorrow" is a very fancy giant mechanism of some sort, grinding away, & nothing looks or sounds or feels real about it. After awhile, it doesn't even seem very fancy any more. It just feels cruddy. One thing happens after another, but there's nothing for me to care about. These aren't characters -- these aren't even cardboard cutouts.

It also has just about the rottenest title you could possibly think of. What a dud from top to bottom. Sometimes movie titles don't make sense & are nevertheless supposed to, & sometimes they don't make sense by design. "Krakatoa: East of Java," for example, is just a foolish mistake, Homer nodding, asleep at the switch, that kind of thing. Not only is the volcano not east of Java, but it isn't even called Krakatoa -- it's properly called Krakatau.

I was also wondering about the title "It Happened One Night," a movie of great charm & one of the high points of '30s comedy. I'm not sure what the significance is of that title -- it sounds a little like the childhood tale introduction: Once upon a time; Many years ago; It happened once that . . . in French, Il était une fois . . .

Some titles are carried over from literary properties, even if the source itself is only very loosely adapted -- like "To Have & Have Not." It made sense in the Hemingway novel because of the importance of the Depression in the story, but it means nothing in the movie. Better to have borrowed Slim's immortal line & called it "To Buy a New Hat."
