....yesterday you'd given up the demon drink:laugh:......what a difference a day makes!

I've only got coffee, there is a shortage of Iranian pubs and off licences.

I'm bored and still have 3 hours work left.....

Oh do you like the monkeys?!

................I must win the prize for the most f*cking boring job being done today by anyone on this site. In front of me are 4 dials that display the gas pressure going through 4 pipes. The pressure ranges from 60 through to 80. I have to keep the pressure between 62 and 64 on the two oil pipes and 71 and 74 on the two gas pipes. So if the pressure drops I increase the flow and if it increases too much, I reduce the flow. For 12 hours!!.....it is torture....

Your job sounds like one Richard Dashut described in fixing the Rumours Master Reels when the tape got worn out.... They had to run the tape and manually change the knob settings...

I am glad that the phone has quieted down (Friday afternoon) so I can get some billable hours in ...

P.S. My drink is ice water...but that will change come quitting time...

....Betsy...if only it was like Richard Dashut....though I am listening to FMac as it happens.

We have just capped 10 oil and gas wells. Without boring you with the detail, to close them, we pump millions of litres of sea water under the sea bed which pushes gas and oil out. When we get enough sea water underground we cap the final 'hole' in the seabed. If you don't do this the seabed can fracture and oil pours out. If that makes sense.

The seawater also makes a better seal and makes it easier to re-open them later - in the old days they poured in concrete and other crap and you had to drill again to open the field up. These particular wells have really high quality light crude in them and the Iranians want to reserve these stocks til the market is more favourable.

on edit - I'm sure you didn't want to know that.............. but you never know when you might get a quiz question on 'how do you close off an oil well'...........lol!

 ....if I said what the going rate was in dollars I suspect you would think it alot of money....it is I guess and I'm fortunate. In context though, this year is unusual - the previous four years I have spent 6 months working in the Siberian sector of the Arctic, with little contact with home. This year I've worked in Russia, China, Iraq and Iran. This last nine weeks I've been on a rig with 10 people in pretty basic conditions. So the work is not easy and you are away from home and I don't always have tv, music, internet etc. The Chinese working day is 12 hours which is also tiring.

So I suppose we get the going rate for what we put up with. One bonus of course is that we don't pay income tax:laugh:

...'how do you close off an oil well'...........

Wasn't that the answer to Final Jeopardy last week?
