You guys doing OK, with the holidays & everything? It hasn't been difficult for me, actually. I don't deny myself anything, I just watch my portions - treat myself to 2 or 3 cookies a day & try to keep up with the exercise (although I've been busy, so I'm down to 3 or 4 times a week instead of 6.) Oh well, any activity is better than nothing. And I'm still at my goal weight 6 months later, so I must be doing something right. :D

Seriously, I got back on the exercise horse this week and am getting back on the diet train next week. Can you say "And Leon's getting LLLAAAARRRRGERRRRR"

I found a picture of myself from the day I found out I was pregnant with Sara. It made me sick. I realized how much weight I've put on in the past 10 years. I'm ready for a real diet that I'm actually going to stick to. That picture traumatized me.

I've put on 5 pounds in the last few months, but it's solid muscle. I'm back to enjoying a childhood favorite: smoked oysters. I eat about 150 smoked oysters a week. Great omega-3 source.
I'm very happy I don't have a sweet tooth. I do, however, have a 'salt' tooth. Chex Mix it is!

Since I left for College I have lost five pounds. I think it has to do with the ability to be able to eat last and the fact that I am walking EVERYWHERE. My college campus is huge and there is a ton of walking involved for me. So im quite content with myself.

Wow, it takes courage to finally admit that you have gone up a size! I know that during my one and only excursion into "heaviness" - about 20 pounds above my fighting weight, I continued to shoehorn myself into my size 30 pants. I had the whole muffin-top thing going on, ripped seams, popped buttons, you name it. And the impression of my belt buckle on my belly fat too! But I never, ever went up a pants size. In hindsight, I suspect that, in reality, I was easily two sizes (or more) above my usual.

I have a friend who's constantly lamenting about how she wishes she were the size she was when she was 20. I personally don't think anyone should look back & want to be just like they were in the past. Life's a journey & things change - it's not natural to go in reverse. From the pics you've shown here, you've lost weight over the past several months & I think you look great. If you want to lose more, go for it - try for a better/healthier future you. But I wish you wouldn't compare former you to current you - you're not being fair to yourself & it will only make you feel down.

I would like to think that we should always do whatever it takes to make sure that we are getting better and better in every way- healthier, prettier, smarter, kinder, stronger, and if weight is an issue, leaner too. Why do we have to associate aging with decline? I think that if, for whatever reason, you consider 20 to be your pinnacle physically, there is nothing wrong with striving to get back there. You were there once, so you sure as heck can get up back there again- and perhaps even surpass it.

I stopped buying Gap jeans when they started making them really thin. If I want cheap jeans I'll buy cheap jeans. I'm not paying $50 for flimsy. Banana's pants/jeans fit me best right now and are better quality.

I know - that was a trip - I did 45 min. on the stairmaster, 30 in the bike, and then lifted. Some exercise pros think that strength training & cardio shouldn't be done during the same workout. They say it can reduce the effectiveness of both workout types, & perhaps even result in a catabolic effect.
Something to think about:

Since I get negative gains from doing strength training more than twice a week, I devote the other five days to cardio -- but not a constant high rate of cardio. I like to do my most intense cardio on the day before strength training (in my situation, Sundays & Thursdays), & then keep cardio to a medium level on the other three days. Each strength training day (Mondays & Fridays) is always a two-hour "to-failure" workout.

Oh no, I don't mean say "well, f*ck it, I'll never look like that again, so why bother?" I just mean that it's not realistic for most people, esp. women & esp. if they've had any kids, to expect to be the same size they were when they were 20. I think setting attainable goals is much better, and once you attain 1 goal, you usually want to set another. Like, if someone want to lose 50 pounds, it's a hell of a lot easier to say "OK, I'm going to start working out more & eating better & lose 10 pounds" and go from there. After the first 10, you say "Wow, I lost 10 pounds! Maybe if I do just a little bit more, like work out 10 more minutes per day, I'll lose 10 more!" 50 pounds seems insurmountable at first, but little by little, it will come off.
Personally, I am now the size I was when I graduated high school for the first time since then - but when I changed my eating habits & starting working out last year, that was NOT my goal - my goal was to lose 10 or 12 pounds, get leaner & more toned, and more physically fit. I ended up losing 20 & realized, "holy ****, this is the smallest I've been in 15 years!" I am more fit than I've ever been. So yes, you're right on that, it is possible. But I never aimed to look like I did then - I would have to tease my hair & put blue eye shadow on again for that. :D I honestly think if I had told myself "You'd better lose 20 pounds & fit into your high school jeans again" I would have gotten frustrated really easily & could very well have given up.

If the WA does not work out, check with your doctor, but I know of people who have back problems who can tolerate the stationary bike that is in more or a reclined position than the upright ones. I believe Lifecycle makes one and they usually are in most gyms. So, that may help.
I suffer from a bad lower back as well and when it goes, that's it for me :(
I did 45 min. on the Stairmaster tonight and then did about 30 minutes of weights (chest and tri's) -- So, hope springs eternal!
I ate:
Kashi cereal (13g 's of protein per serving) for breakfast
A protein shake for mid morning snack
Pasta and light sauce for lunch (carbs I know, but I did not want to throw it away  )
A handful of raw almonds for the mid day snak
Nine eggs whites and big thing of fresh broccoli for dinner.
_______________________________________________________________
Tommorow, it's the same dinner, but I switch up the snacks (Protein bars or a grilled chicken breast) and chicken and brocoli for lunch.

I read an article in the NY Times yesterday about the "Skinny Bitch" books. I had never heard about them, but they sound like a fun read- and they debunk those MYTHS about low-fat and low-carb diets. (Yes, I think they are myths). They are militantly in-your-face vegan points of view, but they seem to provide some brutally pragmatic advice about nutrition, the politics of diet and, of course, the meat industry. I'm not on any diet, nor do I need to lose weight, but I may pick these up just as a fun, informative read.

When I say the word "diet" - I am talking about a way of eating, not some plan in a book, though my diet may mirror some plans at some point in them. A good example of a way of eating for life is Weight Watchers. Their plan is wonderful and you do not give up any food groups. Remember, if you deny your body all food containing fat for two weeks, when your body gets a source of fat, it is going to horde it because it thinks it may never get it again.
In the end, carbs (the bad ones) cause people to store fat. So, if you are conscious of that, you can lose weight and/or prevent your body from sttoring fat.
In the end, the four most important things to remember are:
1. Portion control. If you want fried chicken, eat one breast, not five.
2. Eat regularly - five or six small meals a day is best.
3. Exercise - if you can't get to the gym, do some push ups at home and take a long walk.
4. Use common sense when eating. Make desert or your favorite fattening foods a treat/reward instead of every meal.
If you do those things everyday, you likely will not be a fat a$$
If you want to build muscle, get abs, etc. Age, determination, and a work out program will need to be considered.

Bingo, Strand. Weight Watchers taught me how to eat more healthfully. I no longer need to count points, I just automatically know how to balance my meals. It becomes second nature.
I would also like to add to your guide:
If you ate a ham & cheese omelette for breakfast with hash browns, toast & butter, you probably shouldn't eat fast food for lunch that day or fettucine alfredo that night.
EDIT: I hope David did not have an omelette that morning.

If you want to build muscle, get abs, etc. Age, determination, and a work out program will need to be considered. And don't do what so many people do at the gym. I call them The Perambulators. You see them walking this way, walking back that way, slowly strolling every which way. But you never seem them A) using any exercise equipment, or B) sweating. They just seem to be people-watching, but hiding it by strolling around for two hours. It's funny to watch them because they're trying to look as if they were on their way to the cardio area or the free weights area or the abs torture area, but you NEVER see them actually using any of that equipment. Occasionally, they stop to chat with someone. They just keep strolling & meandering & perambulating. What ****tards!

For dinner, I had two huge fatburgers with bacon & "cheese" plus fries & ketchup & a large chocolate shake with whipped cream.

I am envious!!!!
Did you have Hayden playing during this?

They drive me crazy, which is a short trip!
The worst, IMO, are the freaks who sit on a machine or bench for 30 MOTHER FUKCING MINUTES and do not let anyone work in. Wrath usually incurs at that point.

The gym bunnies, yes they are everywhere.
One of my pet peeves is when you are using a piece of equipment, and invariably there is some girl on the floor next to you stretching. But not just any kind of stretching- invariably it involves lots of bending over, legs wide open in the air, thrusting, etc. You know, stuff that she could have easily been doing in the privacy of her own goddamn home. And of course she is checking everyone out to see how much attention she gets with her hey-nanny-nanny wide open for all to see. And of course, standing right next to her, I automatically feel like I have to do anything I can to prevent my head from even turning in her direction because 1) there are some things I just do not want to look at, 2) I don't want to give her the satisfaction of thinking that I may have been looking and 2) I don't want to come off as some kind of perv. And most laughably, in this part of the city, let's just say that there probably weren't too many other guys at the gym interested in her display either.

You need to take your slightly faded, chartreuse spandex bike shorts, headband and tank top out of Chelsea, hop on the B or C, and head up to the Harlem Y at 180 West 135th Street

Christ. It is the new year, and I said I was going to start again. If I can lose30 lbs and keep it off, I can lose another 30.
I need to buy stuff to snack on while at work. Then, I'll be doing fine. I did weight watchers the last time, and it's brilliant! So, I plan to do the same thing I did last time. I know I can do this...

I am one of those (annoying) people who could always eat whatever I wanted. I've finally reached the point where I can't get away with it any longer. Not sure if it's mainly genetics, aging, or (as I'm inclined to think) the fact that I work out a lot less often & (like almost everyone else around here) drive more frequently than walk. I'm not in bad shape (As they say, it's a lot easier to keep muscle once it's there than it should be, in all fairness), but I'm concerned about things like heart health. I'm definitely making changes when it comes to working up a sweat.
Good luck to those on strict diets. Not easy.

New season of The Biggest Loser started last night too, which inspires me & makes me want to continue on this path. I love that show.
I thought the divorced wife was going to kill her ex when he announced that she had given up on the marriage. He was pretty awful, but I thought the host was pretty inappropriate when she asked them in front of everybody whether they had ever worked as hard on their marriage as they did on losing weight over the last few days.

Yeah, they're odd. I actually think the husband really did feel bad about saying that, and it seems like he's still in love with her. I don't know how good they'll be at supporting eachother with all that old baggage.
I like the brown team (married couple) and the orange team (mom & son.) I also get a kick out ot the pinks, Bette Sue & her daughter. :p

I think I'm gonna try to start Tuesday...I'm not really on a diet per se, but I just finished a big batch of Shake 'n' Bake chicken. Not all that bad for you, but it's a lot of sodium, especially when you have a bag of Chex Mix for dessert!

Yeah, I need to cut my sodium intake. Salt = water retained. Not to mention wrecked arteries...

I just read this and found it hysterically funny, especially the comments. So does Orbits gum really cause weight loss?? Discuss.

Some of you might have effluvia in your guts or perhaps parasites of worm-like variety down there, thus preventing you from losing the weight you want to lose.
Consider having stool samples taken.

ROTFL.. I actually did have a parasite at one time, and I SOOOO couldn't believe out of all the times I had to run to the "loo" - that I didn't lose an ounce..

Yesterday was pretty good for me. I have a new gym now, I had to get out of my old ghetto-ass gym. I'm not sure the machines ever got cleaned, the broken ones were rarely fixed, and the staff was immature and rude. I never saw them working actually except for signing new members. My new gym is nicer with a better caliber of staff. Rude people are a big pet peeve so my old gym just irritated me. So this is much better. I really didn't work out much in December because there is so much to do with Christmas and all I just did not have the energy. It feels good to be back into it.

Ew. I wonder how much of that weight was water loss due to dehydration. Gross. I assume this is similar to the diarrhea people report from eating sugar-free candy?
I'm doing OK. No parasites here. :wavey: Miraculously, I didn't gain any significant amount of weight over the holidays. My PT has finally allowed me to put chest presses back into my routine, so that's a good thing. Still can't do much else as far as weights go, so I try to keep my cardio up with the elliptical 4 or 5 times a week.

ROTFL.. OMG.. there went the water all over the keyboard AGAIN.. I read the "sugar-free" candy ordeal, as I was in the same boat with those other diarrhea people.. and even went to the doctor for that one.. This really has me laughing, becuase you think you are losing tons of weight, each time you hit the br, but instead, nothing happens.. The nurse was laughing with me, telling me that people think that the way to go is "sugar-free" candy, when they are dieting, but all that does is give people the run's.. Thank heavens, no more parasites here too, as that was years ago, and I pray that no-one ever will have to go through that one. YUCK.. I just need to keep on walking, and hit the gym again..lol
