Of her San Diego show...

Photo by: wenn During a gig in San Diego on Wednesday night (December 12), Tori Amos angrily blasted two women in the audience telling them to “get the **** out” of her show.

The songstress was performing her track ‘Code Red’ at the Copley Symphony Hall when she became irate with the ‘fans’ on the front row who kept leaving and re-entering the auditorium.

Midway through the track, she lost her nerve and told the women: “Get the **** out of my show! Get the **** out! It's a privilege to sit in the front row and I reserve those seats for people who appreciate music, get the **** out!"
A member of security then came along and escorted the culprits away seemingly for their own safety.

They're lucky she didn't throw her shoes at them.

The audience seemed very happy with her actions - from what I've read elsewhere the people had been disruptive and rude the entire show. They got off easy. It's a shame the website highlighting this is trying to spin it the other direction.

Actually Tori got it wrong. Its a privilege for her to perform and have people come see her, not to sit on the front row. Especially if you're paying premium prices to sit up close. She broke the cardinal rule...never ever behave that towards fans. Unless violence erupts or someone is being hurt there is no reason for that.

I saw her in 2003 or 2004 (cant remember) here in Orlando and she was quite pleasant. Very good show actually, i've never been a "fan"...just took the then-girlfriend to see her.

Actually, she gives away front row pit tickets to fans before the show. Her bodyguard usually gives them to fans at her M&Gs. Apparently, these girls were only interested in getting drinks the whole time.

She did this not too long ago in my hometown in Charlotte, except she was kicking out a security guard who wouldn't let some fans dance. It was pretty awesome!

I totally see where you are coming from, but I think in this instance she felt they were being disrespectful to her performance and to others in the audience. She's saying it's a "privilege" to sit there because she gives them away to fans that really appreciate her songs. I got to attend her soundcheck on Tuesday and she really puts her all into delivering a perfect show. Although I can't say I'd be feeling the same if that were me being kicked out!

Bottom line, don't **** with Tori! She'll bite your head off!

Seriously?

Why should Tori act like she's privileged to play for people? She doesn't have to do it. I like it that she does her music the exact way she wants and treats the rest of her job - and probably her life - in the same way. If you want to go to a club and only pay attention to the band fleetingly between drinks, that's just fine. But don't go to a high end show, front row on guest tickets, and irritate the living hell out of the people around you with your rudeness. People get away with too much crap... it's nice to see someone actually USE THEIR SPINE. The reaction of the crowd shows it; perhaps if artists put the smack down a little more, some concert experiences wouldn't be total ****.

UPDATE: A rep for Tori's record label just contacted TMZ with the following statement: "Tori doesn't sell front row seats to her shows. She'll pick fans that are in the back row and she will upgrade them. It is a privilege to get picked. Apparently these two girls were on their cell phones all night... It was her sticking up for her other fans that missed out on the opportunity."

I think that's awesome! I wish more artists would do that...

When Brucie and I saw Johnette Napolitano last month, she told a girl in the front to quit taking pictures. This was in a very small venue, w/ a capacity of 200 - max. Johnette stopped in the middle of a song and said, "Okay, enough with the picture taking - seriously, you need to just be here with the rest of us." At the end of the song, Johnette blew her a kiss and waved. The woman was using her cell phone, with no flash. But still, I think it's cool that Johnette said something...

At Butch Walker's acoustic shows, he will tell drunk idiots who can't stop talking to stfu.

I say kudos to Tori!

The tide turned her way this time. It very easily could have turned against her at the show and/or later in the press. That is why the show goes on no matter what and the best advice is to ignore it, tell security later, and then have them quietly deal with it. I remember one time Glenn Close stopped a Broadway production she was in and persecuted these tourists by shrieking at them "DO YOU WANT ME TO CONTINUE WITH THE SHOW OR SHALL WE HAVEW A PHOTO SESSION!" - - completely unprofessional behav. Having said that, being on the road wears down the ability to ignore shiitte like this.

One of my friends and I FINALLY got to be front row at a Stevie show (we were really 3rd row, but the security guy let us stand at the stage) after 25 years of trying together. A woman and a few of her friends felt that because they had paid "$500" for their tickets, my friend and I should move back for them. (They were late getting to the show) The security guard came over and told us he was sorry, but that we had to move because these women technically had second row seats. They then proceeded to talk loudly and take pictures all night. What was the point?

I remember one time Glenn Close stopped a Broadway production she was in and persecuted these tourists by shrieking at them "DO YOU WANT ME TO CONTINUE WITH THE SHOW OR SHALL WE HAVEW A PHOTO SESSION!" - - completely unprofessional behav.

When I was young(er!) Zsa Zsa Gabor caused an uproar in the Philly area over an ugly incident at a dinner theater. I just remember my mom taking it as an opportunity to explain the right & wrong ways to treat people who are "different."
Here's the (short) story:

As for Tori & Glenn...I guess I'm just of the opinion that there are better ways to convey frustrations when all eyes are on you. If you want the behavior to improve, why not just say it nicely at first - why risk humiliating people in front of a crowd, even if they are being rude?

at the one Tori show I ever attended on her Dew Drop Inn tour in the 1990s at Memorial Hall in Kansas City a young male in the audience was arguing with his girlfriend and as he stormed toward the exit he yelled out ..Tori you suck!" Tori calmly quipped "what would we do without our assholes " and went on with the song...wonderful response I thought..as for this new incident talking on the cell phones clinched it for me ..i'm glad she gave the tacky bitches the boot.

I was gonna start a thread last week, cause I had seen Tori for the first time last Saturday. I was pretty impressed. I was more impressed w/ how she interacts w/ her audience vs. the music she choose to perform. Not that that wasn't fabulous. There is just a whole vibe going on @ a Tori show, and its intriguing.
Moreover...besides hearing that she gives fans front or 2nd row tix ( I don't know that) what I do know is that prior to any show, there are fan club pre-sales (a free fan club) and you can purchase tix for $125 that get you a good bag full of tour merch., meet & greet, attendance to her sound check, and either 1st or 2nd row tix. OMFG...I mean SN would NEVER consider such generosity for $125. Makes me sick what I spend on Stevie & the Mac..and for what. Not complaining, I continue to do it... just really, when I see what other artists do for their fans.
As for this incident..."f" yea for her! Whether her choice of words were eloquent or the exact point, she wasn't going to let blabber mouth rightous people who were there to be there front row vs. reveling the moment, spoil it for the rest of us!

I don't think so, considering that it's from TMZ. I highly doubt that her management was just like, "oh hay, before anybody says anything bad about Toriiii.." TMZ is total slag - tabloid trash style. I'd be willing to bet that they were all over her management looking for a comment. It still seems like clarification to me.. not damage control. People aren't going to stop going to Tori shows, and they know it. She isn't sorry or worried about it, and I doubt her management team is, either. Another artist.. maybe. Tori.. no.

I am constantly ashamed of the way people behave at concerts, recitals, etc...

Here are my guidelines of etiquette when going to a show..

1. Don't talk during the show. You are in the audience... not on stage.
2. Don't get up during the show, if you absolutely must get up during a show, do so after a song, or even better a set....
3. Don't do anything to distract the artist... photos, cell phones, pagers...
4. Cheer as loud as you want after songs... for rock concerts obviously this can be during a song as well... but common sense dictates if this is appropriate.

Having said this... I gotta say Tori probably got really distracted and it pissed her off.. It's not a social event... it's a time to listen and connect with Tori...

I am TOTALLY guilty of takin gpics @ concerts, but not to a fault where it's like EVERYTIME they look over, I am popin' off a flash in their face. In fact more over than not, I don't even use my flash. This gets me next to no pics as a result, but I'd rahter enjoy the show and have pics as an after thought than gads of pics, but forgot what songs they sang or risk pissing off the artist.
@ a SN or Mac show, I was even MORE guilty of taking gads of pics, but that's cause it was my 1st time being so close. I try and mellow it out now, but being my fav artists, I have to say I can't stop all together =0( I feel that if I am atleast showing some respect by not causing a strobe light effect w/ the amount of pics taken that it's ok. I suppose really it's not. At all. :o

No I didn't :( She usually will sign and take pics before her shows. I waited for 3 hours with about 15 other people in the rain....but she was working on things for an upcoming live DVD and was running late to the venue. Plus, the rain :( (her big ass bodyguard came out and informed us though, which I thought was nice of him). We stayed and watched her come in. She smiled and blew us kisses from under her umbrella and said "go get warm and dry and I will see you later". Aka...."I'm not coming out in this ****!" But it's cool.

I actually just got into her big with this album...because of a FM fan of mine actually. She met her in Milwaukee and I thought that was the coolest thing.

Here is one of their stories:

Ex-fan Monique posted a blog on her MySpace page addressing the confrontation, saying, "All I was doing was telling my friend who went to the restroom that I couldn't believe she missed her favorite song by Tori ... and Tori had the f**king DIVA audacity to stop her song and tell me to leave just because I was talking about how amazing her live rendition was." Flattery will get you nowhere -- except thrown out!

Monique went on to write, "Guess my First Amendment rights were taken away at the door." Clearly at a Tori Amos concert -- you better sit straight ... and silent!

Also -Tori Amos has nothing to do with the First Amendment.

"December 13th 2007

Next up was Code Red. Now, there were two girls who were front row center. They'd been getting up to get drinks every few songs, texting people, putting their cameras on the stage and taking pictures of Tori, as well as snapping pics of each other and just generally talking really loudly. I spoke to one of them during the Professional Widow interlude, and she mentioned her friend was a fan and she was along for the ride. The girls seemed nice but also probably should not have been front row center if they were going to eff off like that. I was worried something bad was going to happen after one of them tried to yell over to me during Virginia. Maybe she was trying to ask what song it was or something, I'm not sure. Tori noticed this girl was being loud and she looked like she was about to say something, but bit her tongue. The girls kept talking, and one went up to get a drink. Then she came back before the start of Code Red, and I could tell Tori was distracted and pissed. They kept on snapping pictures of each other and yapping loudly, so finally Tori stopped Code Red and told one of the girls to get the **** out of her show. Then she got up and basically charged the front row and pointed to her. It was surreal and frightening. Then she went back to the mic and said something along the lines of, "Sitting in the front row is a privilege. Those are my seats and I give them to people who like music." Smitty ran down and lead one of the girls out. Then Tori looked at the other girl and said (not into the mic but just right to her face): Are you with her? You can get the **** out, too." It was definitely the angriest I have ever seen her at a show. Ever. She started Code Red over again and snarled her way through it. Then she came back and growled through Precious Things, Space Dog, and Bliss. As my Nana would say, she was madder than a wet hen!"

. . . They'd been getting up to get drinks every few songs . . . .

Last I checked, that is not illegal and the venue readily sells all kinds of stuff -- maybe Tori will now demand that no one leave the hall why she is playing -- we'll see who books her then

. . . texting people, putting their cameras on the stage and taking pictures of Tori, as well as snapping pics of each other . . .

Well, that could be any Ledgie at any concert. I mean look at all the great concert photos we get - usually (and thankfuly) from Patti - who usually is on the front row

. . . and just generally talking really loudly . . . .

That is bad. But, I still maintain Tori handled it in a non-professional manner, esp. if, as this blog suggests, she let it effect her performance.

So, I still maintain, road strain caused that conduct, which is not to say the girls did not deserve to be dealt with by security for talking loudly.

Also - thanks for posting that - I am just commenting on it, not responding to you, etc.

I do not think it is an apology. I think it is damage control though. I base that on the fact that someone felt the need to comment at all.

I took it as people misunderstood what Tori was implying (that it's a privelege to be in her presence, rather than the fact that a diehard fan would kill for those seats & these 2 didn't deserve them) so her management decided to set the record straight. I don't consider clarifying damage control.

I've taken pics at shows with no flash. I've danced & sang at shows. I've gotten up to pee or get a drink. But this sounds as if it were excessive (other audience members saying they "kept getting up" implies that it was more than once or twice.) And yakking on cell phones during a concert? Taking multiple pics of yourself while the performer is playing? Talking loudly? WHY would you do that? This woman is an amazing artist, pay attention & enjoy the experience!

How many times have you seen someone saunter in late to a Mac or Stevie show, then sit there in the front row looking bored or talking to their friends, or leaving for a few minutes every 2 or 3 songs, while you sit there way up in the stands fuming because if YOU were in the front row, you would truly appreciate it by giving them your undivded attention & enjoying the experience fully. I think it's great that Tori stood up for her TRUE diehard fans. Was she rude? Sure, after those "fans" were rude to her and the other fans. Karma's a bitch - maybe they should have given some respect to people who truly wanted to be there by shutting the f*ck up and not distracting from the performance.

So, I take it you're buying Tori's side of the story

In the end, any person who has been on stage knows Tori acted in an non-professional manner. If you're okay with that - so be it. But, just be careful the next time you ask Jazzy to text you after every song, which would be like 12 texts, at a minimum, in each concert -- you may get him thrown out and you have lost your right to bitch about it - karma ya know :p

Last I checked, that is not illegal and the venue readily sells all kinds of stuff -- maybe Tori will now demand that no one leave the hall why she is playing -- we'll see who books her then

I have actually seen artists that only allow in and outs between songs. For the life of me now, I can't recall who they were. She may have been one of them.

If Stevie or FM had this policy they wouldn't be afraid to play new songs.

Bottom line, don't **** with Tori! She'll bite your head off!

God I love Tori. Think about it, if you were doing a presentation or a dance show or singing or woteva..you'd be pissed if someone was doing what those 2 were...I heard they were ringing people all night on their mobiles, yelling at each other, and spilling drinks all over the place. btw, SweetGirl24 i LOVE your sig..."I BELIEVE IN PEACE, BITCH...I believe, oh i believe in peace, i sed IIIII BELIEVE IN PEEEEEEAAACCCEEE!!"

Most theatre productions have a similar policy. The Met in NYC will not let you back in if you leave to go to the bathroom

I'm buying everyone's story except the girl that got kicked out, which would be Tori's & a few other fans who witnessed the incident. From what I've read (and I may have missed something) she's the only one disputing what happened, or how & why it happened.

And I've never asked Jazzy to text me a setlist. :wavey: Besides, quickly glancing down & typing 4 or 5 keys on a phone is a whole lot different than repeatedly talking loudly during songs, leaving your seat repeatedly, or using flash photography to the point of distraction.

Shea's Buffalo won't either during Broadway shows. So there you go. It's common courtesy, really.

My point was that everyone does it during a rock or pop concert. It is standard for the one's I have been to and I have seen more than 100 acts  In fact, the venues will tell you they need the concession money.

In the end, Tori acted unprofessionally and it rubs me the wrong way. Then again, why I give a rat's a$$ I'll never know. Maybe it is because I have seen MANY a Ledgie act in a similar manner (on edit - I mean taking pics., talking, standing while the people behind them are sitting, sneaking up to the front row or giving others their tickets so they can come up and stand in front of the proper ticket holders in the rows behind them, etc. ) at concerts and now they are casting stones - - Plus, it is a sad commentary on how quiet things are around here

Interestingly and again, the proper method was to have her security deal with the situation. Is the reason you like this that she publicly told off some chick whose's actions you hate?

Yes, everyone does get up at rock concerts. But NOT everyone distracts the performer with their rudeness to the extent that they blow up. I'm not saying Tori wasn't unprofessional, I'm saying that I don't blame her. I think she was defending her diehard fans, letting these girls know that there are plenty of people who would do anything for those seats & they were acting like they didn't care, like sitting front row was no big deal, like it was a joke & a good time to f*ck around.

Tori does upgrades fans at every show - we were brought from the balcony down to the 6th row when she was here this past fall. And like Anita mentioned, she offers packages including a meet & greet pretty inexpensively considering I've paid that total amount for 1 ticket to a Mac show.

And I just read back through this thread - who here has acted in a similar manner at shows & is now casting stones? I know you can't possibly be referring to me, kind sir.

Well, I am in a way. I am saying that we have all benefited from people taking tons of pictures (against the rules) and people texting and recording concerts (against the rules) -- so to fault someone for doing the same thing is BS in my book. I mean you happen to agree in this scenario. What if Jazzy (example only) got tossed from a concert for texting "us" the set list? What if Patti (example only) got tossed for taking 300 pictures, for her and our benefit? Would we be so willing to forgive the artist? I mean how many of us have bitched about not being able to violate those very rules, which are there mostly so that the artist does not get distracted  To me, that is hypocrisy. But, if you are cool with that line drawing, so be it

I have actually seen artists that only allow in and outs between songs. For the life of me now, I can't recall who they were. She may have been one of them.I saw Rickie Lee Jones on her Magazine Tour at Universal Amphitheatre in 1984 (when George Hawkins played bass). Rickie Lee was always fairly temperamental anyway, but at this show she was getting exasperated with the innies & outies during the first few songs, so she warned everyone to come in or stay out & had the ushers (?) close the doors, & then said, "Now that that's settled, let's continue" (or something like that).

But I don't think a venue can actually do that. It probably violates a fire code or something.

At the shows that I heard of where there was an issue with photos being taken, security dealt with it for the most part. I myself almost got booted for taking pics at the Stevie/Don show in Pittsburgh, due to the fact that when I left for the show, the website stated pictures were OK. When I got there, I took my camera in without a problem. Halfway through the show, 1 security guard stopped me, another said it was fine.

I never use a flash, and I highly doubt Stevie was distracted by me in the 5th row far right - she certainly wasn't bothered at last summer's Camden show when pics were permitted & I was right at her feet snapping away.
However, if she had asked security to stop people from taking pics, or if she said "please no more pics" I would have stopped. If I didn't, I would have nothing to bitch about when I got tossed out. I get much more upset at people yelling things out in the middle of songs, or drunkenly spilling drinks on others, or hitting others to get up front for Edge rush, or talking on the phone not watching the show while they're sitting in the front row than I do at people quietly taking pics or simply holding their phone up so friends at home can hear a song.

I know what you're saying, Strand, and again, I agree that what Tori did was unprofessional. Could she have done it differently? Sure. BUT I totally understand why she blew up like that. I do NOT think this was diva behavior, I think it was her scolding people for not appreciating the show & being disrespectful to other fans around them. Just like the Manchester(?) Mac show that someone brought up earlier in this thread - physical altercations during a performance? WTF? Were Stevie & Lindsey unprofessional for yelling at those people to get out? Maybe, but it wasn't uncalled for either.

That sort of is my point. These rude girls were nefver warned or anything like that.

. . . I agree that what Tori did was unprofessional . . . .

Which brings me back to my point that she seems a little road worn.

Also - I think seeing someone beaten in front of you might cross the line into the need to take action.

I forgot what happened in Manchester - what happened?

^ So, you think she's road worn, but you can't understand why she would do/say something like that? It's no excuse?

And I don't recall the specifics about the Manchester show, but I think people were fighting (pushing, shoving, yelling, etc.) and Stevie & LB pointed at them & someone said "Get the f*ck out" "get them the f*ck out of here" or something similar. Anyone recall the specifics?

^^

I understand why she did it. I am saying it looks like the road has come to own her - others disagreed and said her behav. was acceptable, etc. So, I was speculating as to why she did it because most performers are schooled not to do it.

I still think Tori is an exception. Many performers would probably have to be pretty road-weary to do it... but she's well known for her eccentric personality. I wouldn't be surprised if she told guests in her home - in the living room, even - to STFU when she's playing.

I mean, c'mon, there isn't the threat of texting to Ledgies, cause THERE IS NOTHING NEW TO TEXT ABOUT! Nothing we can do can piss off FM/SN cause it's ALL THE SAME THING!!!!!:lol::lol::lol:
