Led Zeppelin reunion: live set list here

Follow the legends' reunion online as it happens
36 minutes ago
Led Zeppelin have taken to the stage at the O2 Arena in London tonight (December 10) - and NME.COM will be bringing you the action as it happens.

Currently we're experiencing one of technical issues with our live blog, but we don't intend to let that stop us, so we're going to post up the set and the comments from our journalist in the hall in this news story while we get things fixed.

So while it is a bit basic, if you just refresh this news story every few minutes you'll have the action.

So far Led Zeppelin have played:

'Good Times Bad Times'
"The set started with a clip from 'The Song Remains The Same' DVD with an American news clip telling of they broke The Beatles' attendance record for a gig in 1973 in California. Simple stage set, video screen behind the band."

'Ramble On'
"'Ramble On' done in extremely slow, bluesy manner, with shards of electric guitar from Jimmy Page."

'Black Dog'
"Page wearing dark shades, quite muddy sound. Crowd singing the 'ah-ah' bits back at Plant."

'In My Time Of Dying'
"Page is playing bottleneck guitar. Plant spoke for the first time before song, saying 'Good evening'."

'Your Life'
"That's not something you get to hear often these days, Led Zeppelin giving a song its live debut."

'Trampled Under Foot'
"Before starting Plant told the crowd it was the band's attempt to sound like Robert Johnson's 'Terraplane Blues'."

'Nobody's Fault But Mine'
"There are huge screen's dominating the O2 Arena, they split into four sometimes, goes monochrome, colour etc...quite spectacular."

'No Quarter'
"Following the song Plant paid tribute to John Paul Jones, who played keyboards and bass on the track."

'Since I've Been Loving You'
"A bit of a style guide for you, all the band are dressed in black bar Page's who is rocking a white shirt. As for the song they gone for the epic version....very bluesy."

'Dazed And Confused'
"Settle yourselves in, we're expecting a ten minute version of this classic..."

I really hope they play something from In Through The Out Door. Hopefully there will be a boot of this show.

Sounds like a great time so far. Of course, I want them to play "Fool in the Rain!" I also think "When the Levee Breaks" and "Immigrant Song" are show ins -- Valhalla, I am coming!

The hard rock legends have performed the following songs tonight (December 10th): 'Good Times, Bad Times', 'Ramble On', 'Black Dog', 'In My Time Of Dying', 'For Your Life, 'Trampled Underfoot', 'Custard Pie', Nobody's Fault But Mine', 'No Quarter', 'Since I've Been Loving You', 'Dazed And Confused', Stairway To Heaven', 'The Song Remains The Same'.

NME.com has running commentary of the show.

'Stairway To Heaven'
"What do you think happened? Right! From the moment those opening notes rang out the whole audience went absolutely crazy. The atmosphere is electric. Afterwards Plant said "Ahmet, we did it!"

'The Song Remains The Same'

'Misty Mountain Hop'
"Plant kicked this one off by praising the job drummer Jason Bonham has been doing, stepping into his late father's shoes tonight."

I am kind of shocked she is not there. She is a huge fan. She once said of LZ that they were really almost too much talent on stage. Plus, she was another "child" of Ahmet E.'s. Finally, she did that gig where Plant was awhile back. I think La Nicks is not really into going to rock concerts as we never really hear of her going to one. The last one was, I think, the Bette M. one in Phoenix, when Taku was with Bette.

'Kashmir'
"Yet another epic, as this song cracks the ten minute mark. Plant introduced this one declaring 'We've got people from 50 countries here and this is the 51st'. Afterwards they left the stage to loud applause. Will they do an encore? What do you reckon..."

'Whole Lotta Love'
"... of course they come back to deafening applause. And it's an extended version of the old 'Top Of The Pops' theme. Then once more the band leave the stage with a visibly emotional Plant declaring:
'Thanks to everybody. Thanks Ahmet Ertegun, this one for is Ahmet Ertegun as we remember the days when Atlantic Records was the best label on the planet!'."

'Rock And Roll'
"Just time for one more, as after two hours the night reaches its climax, and what a stomper to go out on."

Naomi Campbell Mugged at Zeppelin Concert
Tuesday , December 11, 2007

By Roger Friedman

ADVERTISEMENTNaomi Campbell Mugged at Zeppelin Concert

Would it be an event if Naomi Campbell weren’t somehow at the center of things? While Led Zeppelin reunited in London to memorialize Atlantic Records’ Ahmet Ertegun, the supermodel was in a luxury box at the O2 Arena getting mugged.

As the show ended I ran into her coming out of the VIP exit. She was having a fight with one of the security men. As we passed, she announced to me, "Someone stole my handbag. It had two phones in it!"

It’s unclear whether Campbell reported the crime or how it happened. She made her complaint to security and then exited through the VIP section while thousands upon thousands of music fans swarmed over her.

She was the only celebrity known to have had a problem at a concert that was filled with A-list names. Mick Jagger, for example, attended the show with girlfriend, L'Wren Scott, while his children, Georgia and James, came with their mother, Jerry Hall.

The two groups did not run into each other. Hall and kids were satisfied to sit in very good seats at the side of the stage near Bob Geldof, while Jagger was seated in resort mogul Sol Kerzner’s private box with Mica Ertegun and James Taylor.

Elsewhere in the O2 Arena lots of other celebrities watched Zeppelin and a stellar roster of musicians put together by producer Harvey Goldsmith pay tribute to the memory of Ahmet Ertegun. They ran the gamut from Rosanna Arquette to guitarist extraordinaire Jeff Beck.

Arquette’s friend Paul McCartney was expected but not seen although his security man arrived and lingered near Arquette in the VIP café before the show.

Also seen in the café were the entire Presley family — Priscilla, Lisa Marie, Riley and son Ben. The four appeared to have cornered the London market on mascara, and Priscilla now looks like Morticia Adams. Why? Who knows?

Juliette Lewis also was spotted in the O2, as was Nile Rodgers, New York radio personality Carol Miller, Will Arnett of "Saturday Night Live," legendary '60s pop icon Lulu with rock jewelry designer Loree Rodkin, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and, ultimately, Foreigner’s Mick Jones, who played one song — "I Want to Know What Love Is" — with a full band and girls’ choir as a tribute to Ertegun.

Jones wasn’t the only Atlantic alumnus on the bill preceding Led Zeppelin. Former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman played at the concert and official after party with his Rhythm Kings featuring Albert Lee. At the after party, Wyman started the show that then featured in succession a group of Atlantic all-star R&B performers whose CDs still sell for the label, some more than current acts. They included Sam Moore, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King, and Solomon Burke.

But just to demonstrate how much the new Warner and Atlantic have nothing do with Ertegun’s fabled label, no executives from the current company bothered to come see those performances.

In fact, Warner Music had its own private party in competition with the official after party and its own artists. These included execs from Rhino Records, which now administers Atlantic’s Ertegun-created catalog that includes Moore, Sledge, King and Burke. Unbelievable, no?

But the after party at Club Indigo on the O2 campus was packed to the rafters while Moore wowed them with "Soul Man," "Money," "I Can’t Turn You Loose," a tribute to Billy Preston on "You Are So Beautiful," and a gorgeous duet with Rodgers on "We Shall Be Free."

Percy Sledge followed with "When a Man Loves a Woman," King offered a tribute to the great Atlantic group the Drifters, and Burke brought his famous throne and gospel soul tones.

It was the real Atlantic Records or, as Robert Plant said during the Led Zeppelin show, a tribute to when Atlantic was "the most magnificent record company on the planet."

Of course, a lot has changed in all that time. Plant, for example, only arrived at the O2 Arena less than a half hour before the group went on stage at 9 p.m. Jimmy Page already was in the house before that, fretting about the show and how he would perform.

The corridor in front of the group’s dressing room was the only place "absolutely no one" with backstage passes was allowed to go before the show began. They were obviously nervous.

There was no reason to be. If you were a Led Zeppelin fan when they last performed together 30 years ago, nothing has changed. But to paraphrase the song they chose for a final encore, it’s been a long, lonely time since they rock and rolled. After blowing on stage like a thunder storm with a trio of hits — "Good Times Bad Times," "Ramble On" and "Black Dog" — the group stumbled.

A strange song selection combined with iffy audio dynamics didn’t help. "In My Time of Dying" and "Your Life" were a little obscure and too long for a crowd packed frighteningly like sardines onto the floor of an arena. To use the vernacular, it was a buzz kill.

The audience — which had gone wild singing the ‘ah-hah’ refrain in Black Dog — drifted. Plant finally really spoke to the audience at that point: "Thank you for the thousands and thousands of emotions we’ve been going through for Ahmet." He added: "And to bring Jason in."

The reference was to Jason Bonham, who joined Plant, Page and John Paul Jones in place of his late father, John, on drums. Bonham the younger is a muscular, hard-hitting and enthusiastic drummer who gave the group a renewed zest for life.

His father would have been proud to see his bald son (funny since the remaining Zeps have heads of hair only Sweeney Todd could love) reinvigorate some of the hoariest music rock and roll has even seen.

Some things did not work so well. "Stairway to Heaven," the group’s famous seven-minute-plus reverie and radio staple, should have been the finale. Instead, it sort of popped up in the middle of the set and had a pedestrian quality. The sound quality was distorted, and the grander moments of this soap opera were lost. It was a disappointment.

On the other hand, "Kashmir," which has Middle Eastern tones and a shuddering drum line, was remarkable. When Plant twice hit beautiful high shimmering notes, the video operator was wise to show Page smiling from ear to ear. It was as if his partner had just made Olympic history.

"There are people from 50 different countries here," Plant announced before the song began, "and this is one of them."

Maybe because it was a one-off show and the group was nervous, there was little humor. The connection to the audience was more corporate than personal, a stark contrast to the later soul show when Moore, King and Sledge showed where Ertegun’s real heart belonged.

Still, you could see in Led Zeppelin’s dynamic English blues a connection to the world from where Ertegun (and Jerry Wexler) came. And when it was time to sing "Trampled Under Foot," Plant not only cited Robert Johnson but cracked wise.

"We were in a church in Mississippi in 1932," he said, smiling for the first time.

The show was a success, financially and emotionally. There’s no doubt about it either: Seeing how many hundreds of millions The Police have raked in this year, Led Zeppelin no doubt will make one last incredibly lucrative tour.

It may have been a coincidence, but in the audience was Gary Arnold, the senior entertainment officer of Best Buy, the huge American electronics chain. It was Best Buy and Arnold who underwrote the Police tour and saw hugely positive results. My guess is he’s gonna have a whole lotta love for Zeppelin when they’re ready to tour, as well.

Foreigner’s Mick Jones, who played one song — "I Want to Know What Love Is" — with a full band and girls’ choir as a tribute to Ertegun.Brave dude ... playing that crud on the same stage Zep performed on.

In fact, Warner Music had its own private party in competition with the official after party and its own artists. These included execs from Rhino Records, which now administers Atlantic’s Ertegun-created catalog that includes Moore, Sledge, King and Burke. Unbelievable, no?Why so much in various articles about the industry execs? Do readers care? It's like the current fashion for newscasters to celebrate themselves, usually at the expense of reporting actual news.

A strange song selection combined with iffy audio dynamics didn’t help. "In My Time of Dying" and "Your Life" were a little obscure and too long for a crowd packed frighteningly like sardines onto the floor of an arena. I hate to admit it, but this sounds like ****! I know that Jimmy Page hasn't played a full show in a very long time, and I realize that Plant lost much of his range... But it was sloppy and way out of tune. I do respect the fact that it's just the four of them doing this without a lot of help (well, not including the echo/delay effect on the vocal mic), but it sometimes verges on a bad cover band.

I really liked it. It was far from perfect, but "sounds like [shiitte]" -- OUCH

I am sure it will be cleaned up for the DVD.

I really don't see how they can salvage some of this performance for a DVD; there are some moments that are so douche-chillingly bad. Just listen again to the last verse of "Stairway to Heaven," and the totally botched note in "There walks a LA-dy we all know..." That has to be any singer's nightmare. And the song was in a much, much lower key than the original to begin with...

But, okay, I will admit that "Kashmir" was just a hair shy of brilliant. It's amazing that just three instrumentalists can make such a big sound; indeed, John Paul Jones (who's looking very good!) has proved why he was such an essential element of LZ.

I too am bummed that there was nothing from In Through the Outdoor," but then again, they would have had to bring in an extra musician to handle all of the keyboards. I have always thought "In the Evening" rocked harder than just about anything they've ever done. And I'm one of the 6 people in the world who absolutely loves "Carouselambra." :wavey: Oh well...

Hell yes. In The Evening is one of my favorite songs. I was hoping for All My Love too but maybe Robert doesn't want to sing it anymore because it's about his son. :(

"In Through the Out Door" was IMO a departure from the more esoteric stuff that preceded it. "Fool in the Rain" is one of my favorite songs they ever did, but it is IMO consciously way more of a pop song than, say, "When the Levee Breaks."

As an aside, I wonder if Lux saw the concert or if she is watching it on the net sources. She LOVED JP so.

"Well, they were a quarter-right: Reports now indicate that Robert Plant and Alison Krauss will perform at the Tennessee fest as part of the Raising Sand tour. But then there’s the biggest rumor of them all, courtesy of British newspaper The Sun via Blabbermouth via NME, which said backstage banter between bandmembers led to one of them admitting he wants to return to the States to play three shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden."

Thinking About Zep
Tuesday, Dec 11, 2007 2:04PM

Speculation about a Led Zeppelin tour went into the stratosphere within moments of the band playing its first full concert in three decades at the O2 Arena in London December 10.
Robert Plant told the crowd it's been a long time since he's rock 'n' rolled - but will it be the last? By all reports - and by the snippets that have been put online - Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham were rehearsed, ballsy and spectacular.
It might be the last time anyone will ever see them onstage – Plant has said he’s not feeling a tour, although Page and Jones were amenable (or has Plant hinted at a tour? Media reports vary and, basically, it's one big kerfuffle). Ultimately, there could be factors that will motivate them and it sure ain’t money – they’ve seen plenty of that and would certainly see more. It could come down to the following:
"With a synergy like this going on, it would be an act of cosmic perversity to stop now," said Pete Paphides of The Times of London.
"They sound awesomely tight," Alexis Petridis wrote in the Guardian. David Cheal of the Daily Telegraph said the band's "familiar old sinew and swagger were still there."
So, for grins and giggles, let's speculate:
There are two promotion companies that easily would have the ability to launch Zep again - Live Nation and AEG. Of those, AEG was clearly present at the show, with AEG Live President Randy Phillips and, according to sources, AEG President Tim Leiweke on hand. Those aren't the kind of folks who fly from Los Angeles to London to just do some headbanging.
In fact, Phillips was said to have made an offer as soon as the show closed. Meanwhile, Gary Arnold of Best Buy - which sponsors the Police tour - was on hand.
Of course, the Zeppelin camp has said touring is just wild speculation - which is many times code for "we're touring but wait for the official press conference." And there are plenty of ways to tour other than traditionally. It's always possible to take up residencies in major cities and let the audiences come to them.
If there is a tour, it won't likely be next spring or summer. Sources say Plant is committed to tour with Alison Krauss, promoting their collaborative Raising Sand, between June and August. There's always an earlier time frame - but, unless the tour has been in the works for months, large arenas are already committed to sporting events or concerts.
Which leaves the fall. Or nothing at all.

Oh, the Zeppelanity! :distress:

Other than the comment about Plant losing his range, your comment pretty much describes a Zeppelin concert in their prime, as well. Zeppelin has never been all that great in concert even when they were still in their 20's. Page is one of the sloppiest live guitarists I've ever heard (he's a monster in the studio, but he just sucks live). The only time I've heard Page sound good live was when he did that tour with The Black Crowes. And, mainly because he had two guitarists backing him up. When he stands alone in what is virtually a power trio, he's crap.

To be fair, his finger is still broken.
What do you attribute Page's sloppiness to?

His innate "Page-ness" is where I always thought he got it from. I agree with Chili that he's much better in the studio than live. He does have a reputation for being pretty much the sloppiest of the "greats" from his generation. Having said that I though that the O2 Arena show wasn't too bad for him, especially considering his finger. I've heard plenty of boots from the 70s where he plays much worse than he did last week. All in all I thought it was pretty good but nothing mindblowing. I'm not a massive Zep fan but I'll probably pick up a copy of this show if it makes it out to DVD.

I'm not a Zep fan, but I saw a bit of the videos from O2 & enjoyed it more than any Fleetwood Mac show since 1982. Zep's achievement here was to buck the entire boring system. Instead of moving in the direction of Celine Dion, they went back to 1970s style by not hauling up the pallets of digital hardware & software. If I ever see another blandly smiling backup musician on somebody's stage, I'm likely to do murder. And if I see any networking cable, I'll yank it out.

Page's live-sloppyness is the bomb. I agree with David. Liveplaying is NOT about reconstruction of the studiowork. Live I want it raw hard and sloppy. It's about energy and not about how it must sound on a stereo or dvd-player.
So Page is a hero. Especially live. Period.

Amen back Sister, for that same reason why I love Page's Sloppyness, I'm still regretting the fact that I didn't see Lindsey's solotour. Directness and honesty. Crappy sloppy or out of tune, I don't f*cking care.

If I remember correctly, he did some solo stuff and yes, he has that same boom sound as his father.

He certainly has, although he made a little more slick hardrock. And I always had the impression his dad did more intuitive things. And was more experimental in the sounds of his drumwork. But a big hardhitter it is. And like hÃ*s dad he can be an elephant in a pocelainstore without breaking anything.

Do you mean the one with them on the cover? That's not the impression I got from it, if that's the one you're talking about. It painted Plant as the lone holdout.

Drummer Jason Bonham says 'Only Time Will Tell'

Add Led Zeppelin to MyNME
Jason Bonham, who joined Led Zeppelin on drums for their recent reunion show has been speaking about the possibility of more shows.

Bonham, the son of original Zeppelin sticksman John Bonham said that as the “new guy”, he’s unaware of any plans to tour again.

"There's been no talks except to Jimmy (Page) and Robert (Plant) and John Paul (Jones) , just to say thanks for the best Christmas present I could ask for” Bonham told Billboard.

He went on to say

“If they do it again, of course I would love to. But that's up to them. Only time will tell. If you'd have asked me a year ago, 'Are they gonna do a date next year?,' I'd have gone, 'No way!' So I was proved wrong once before."

Bonham is currently the drummer with Foreigner.

As previously reported, bookers at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium are talking to Led Zeppelin about a possible show at the venue.
