I thought your review sucked. It read like an Amazon reviewer who was unfamiliar with the artist and the music.

The greatness of Stevie's White Winged Dove tour was her astonishment-to-her-own-self that she actually pulled it off. "Gold and Braid" was hedonism personified. She actually realized what "Gold Dust Woman" and "Sara" really meant to her at this point. And she really-only-truly understood "Edge of Seventeen" at these moments- every other time was just melodrama and/or conjecture- with a few exceptions.

It doesn't really matter. Stevie did her thing and she's done.

Why are you being so mean-spirited? Definitely not called for around here.

I enjoyed the review, but I do like Dreams!

This is the part of every response to everyone who writes a personal attack in response to something I wrote, and all I say is "big deal!" Unfamiliar with the artist or the music? What does a guy have to do to be a "true fan" around here anyway? Besides, the website I wrote the review for is intended for people looking for detailed reviews of products, not thousands of words of gushing chiffonheadism.

Dreams is almost heartbreaking. What's not to love? It's not Stevie's fault that Waddy sucks.

I have to chime in and say that this version of Dreams is amazing. when she screams "well, women they will come and darlin', they will go" - it's just magic. I find very little, if anything, to critcize about this concert other than the fact that they cut those other songs. also, you may want to re-read your review and correct a few grammatical mistakes. otherwise, it's a fairly interesting take on the video.

I'll fix some of the grammatical errors and update my review sometime this morning. MS Word's grammar check is the most goddamned obnoxious thing ever created by Microsoft. Every sentence with more than 20 words is "too long to process for sentence structure," it hates contractions, Waddy belongs in an "AC or DC" tribute band, and "Gold Dust Woman" is gender specific and should be changed to "Gold Dust Person!" Give me a break already.

Get over yourself BIG GIANT HEAD .....

Your review was inadequate- big deal.

Unfamiliar with the artist or the music? What does a guy have to do to be a "true fan" around here anyway?
One criticism and this is the result?? All of sudden your "true fan-dom" is being called into question?? I won't refer to the irony to follow...

Besides, the website I wrote the review for is intended for people looking for detailed reviews of products, not thousands of words of gushing

I wanna shake your hand for perceiving that!

I first saw that when I was 15 and I was like - - -

I totally agree with the rest of what you said but I just wanted to focus on that.

i.m.o. this concert really did "seal the deal" for Stevie.
She was big before it - she was HUGE afterwards.

And I think it's one of her best performances ever, if not THE best. This was hard-core Stevie Freaking Nicks at her best and in her prime. ;)

Yeah, and the only comment I could get from an actual Epinions user on my review was from someone who didn't like Stevie. Couldn't even bother to say if he liked my review or not. "I can tolerate most "flawed" voices in rock, but...blah blah...bull****..." Whatever, dude. At least I can say that here without getting banned!

I agree, thanks Sorta! I mean, thank you entirely :)
I don't innately have your talent for rhapsodizing Nicksian without rambling, and I admired your observations which reading at 3:42 am brought me back to that December day in 1981 and the concert on Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills... like only 3 miles from my first ever apartment, on Sunset, homesick for Connecticut (go figure) and my unsuccessful attempts to get into hand what HAD to be the hardest ticket in LA to get ahold of. Literally on the edge of 17 myself at the time, i HAD to get in, and though Stevie had sold out her 2 nights (instantly,it seems) the box-office people encouraged me to keep checking back, which i did, repeatedly, many days and nights, for weeks until the concerts. So, never got in. Yet i do recall some circumstances of the show that long-ago dreary December: after the first night's show, The LA Times wrote a totally snarky review and in part, the critic claimed "Nicks is far too flighty to hold the rock and roll stage as a solo act" and predicted she would soon return to Fleetwood Mac which 'grounded her as a performer' or some such bull****. I've often wondered if that particular review is why Stevie seldomly has performed with quite the same gorgeously free abandon and animation as we see on this video- (isn't that the Charleston she performs for a few gleeful seconds on 'I Need To Know'??)
And speaking of 'animation' my first thought when i saw the HBO special, with Stevie and her (as Sorta said) huge tambourine on 'Gold And Braid' (early in the song, prior to the wonderful and repeated high kicks with her back to the audience!)- oh yeah, my first thought was that Stevie looked to be 'Betty' from 'The Archies' come to life and that the whole 'don't hide behind your hair' chorus sounded like a Betty/Veronica/Archies song with an opening guitar riff borrowed from Clapton. How could any 18 year old boy NOT love Stevie Nicks in 1981? She was a hot-cartoon-girl come to life, but more beautiful and more hot, and she could rock like any guy and the voice....My, my, the voice.. The 'Hollywood Reporter' noted that young Hollywood turned out in droves for the Nicks Wilshire shows, the names mentioned included Rob Lowe, Nastassja Kinski, Brooke Shields and Jodie Foster...Was Jodie on a break from Yale maybe, then? Or not enrolled yet? Whatever...
The HBO special aired, followed by the home video release, and no matter how many times i would change majors (or colleges) i vowed that December (sulking at Sunset and La Cienega) i would NOT miss any future Nicks appearences, and soon i had the 1982 LA Forum Mac 'Mirage' concert which was life-changing for me. Unbelievable..and even though it was only a nosebleed seat for me, it was Nicks at her most soul-stirring that night, and may be my favorite concert ever. I think about 7 months later, i made the long trek out to a desert somewhere for...err...The US Festival, where 'Stand Back' made its debut, and Stevie was the next-to-last performer to go on, David Bowie closed the all-day/all-night festival, which i think was held for 3 days but i only attended the date Stevie performed. Maybe a month later, in that great Stevie year of 1983, i traded a batch of brownies (what can i say, i always have been a good *cook*) for a ride and a general admission ticket to 'Peace Sunday' down in Long Beach ---and again, she was just magnificient, which is why i guess I'm still attending shows some 24 years (yikes!) later, and it all started from the outrage of not being able to attend the Wilshire Blvd performance in December of 1981. Still pisses me off :)
Nah, i'm over it...
So, thanks for your review of the 'Stevie Nicks in Concert' video and for
the floodgate of memories released that now at 4:13 am at long-last might lull me into a medicated, sweetened sleep, just as those who may have read this far may likewise be ready for some zzzs. Shoulda stuck with the brownies. Aint it somethin how as you get older, its doctors with PhDs who now are the newby drug dealers for us weathered 80's "kids" and it's Eli Lilly as the main supplier, and old Eli doesn't even sit down with you for 10 minutes to let you have a free sample and listen to 'Violet and Blue' or somethin before sending you on your way...
Seems to be so many young KIDS on this board (awesome) and 44 is what it is and 44 is OLD but reading Sorta's review took me back to 18, the edge of 17 and that whole 'White Wing Dove' tour ( i don't THINK it was 'winged' at the time, though it may have been). I'm told that when i don't (oops) get my dosages wrong-- (hey, you try being 100% accurate after 8 years!) that if i get a night's sleep, that if i don't "hide behind my hair" that-- gosh-- i can still pass for about 32, but hey, thats still kind of old to the 18 year old ghost reawakened...Yet again, Stevie herself at this performance was 33 years old, i believe.
How many here (any??) will join me in concuring you too, may have been on the edge of 17 back in the Bella Donna days??? No-one?
You mean kids :)

"Rob Lowe, Nastassja Kinski, Brooke Shields and Jodie Foster...Was Jodie on a break from Yale maybe, then? Or not enrolled yet? Whatever"

sans Brooke Shields that is the cast of The Hotel New Hampshire so they were probably in La La Land doing preliminary work for that film and yes Jodie was at Yale then .

Literally on the edge of 17 myself at the time, i HAD to get in, and though Stevie had sold out her 2 nights (instantly,it seems)There were five nights total in L.A. I think they all sold out -- the theater holds about 2,000 people. It was an old movie house that was renovated in 1981, when Stevie Nicks was the first live show after the renovation.

Yet i do recall some circumstances of the show that long-ago dreary December: after the first night's show, The LA Times wrote a totally snarky review and in part, the critic claimed "Nicks is far too flighty to hold the rock and roll stage as a solo act" and predicted she would soon return to Fleetwood Mac which 'grounded her as a performer' or some such bull****.Not in the L.A. Times. Dennis Hunt reviewed the opening Tuesday night in the weekday Calendar section & he called it the best pop-rock show all year. You might be confusing it with Steve Pond's review in the Times a few years later of Stevie's sold-out Los Angeles show at the Forum, when he wrote that she was too "flighty & fluttery to command a stage." Pond, who was on staff at Rolling Stone during its critical heyday, was a pretty big supporter of Fleetwood Mac, but considered Nicks expendable. You can find some of his reviews in the BLA.

Still pisses me off Peace Sunday was in Pasadena & it was about four months before the Mirage tour. I sympathize with you because these things are all so far in the past at this point that our memories for details just don't hold up, although we still all have our general impressions.

Actually, David is correct.

Stevie played the following dates:

Dec. 7, 1981 - Wilshire Ebell Theatre Los Angeles, CA
Dec. 8, 1981 - Wilshire Ebell Theatre Los Angeles, CA
Dec. 9, 1981 - Wilshire Ebell Theatre Los Angeles, CA
Dec. 12, 1981 - Wilshire Ebell Theatre Los Angeles, CA
Dec. 13, 1981 - Wilshire Ebell Theatre Los Angeles, CA

Dec. 13, 1981 - Wilshire Ebell Theatre Los Angeles, CAYep, it was five nights in L.A. Plus, the Ebell is actually not the same venue as the Fox Wilshire. They're both on Wilshire but probably several miles apart. John Stewart was Stevie's opening act through the whole L.A. run. It's all a blur now but I remember he made some goofy comment about the Main Event whooshing in soon on her broomstick. The Times ran Dennis Hunt's review of opening night & there was a photo with the review of Stevie onstage. Maybe the Herald Examiner also reviewed--I never looked.

Yes, I'm getting older too. :sorry:

I was on the edge of 17 (16 years old in 1981) but I didn't even know who Stevie was until the following year when we got cable and I discovered MTV (back when it really was "music television"). Unfortunately we got cable hooked up about a month after Stevie's concert was on HBO. I still remember looking at the out-of-date program guide description (with photo!) disappointed at having missed it. I was finally able to watch the show another year later after placing a special order at the local video store. I was blown away. Pure magic. Words still fail me...
