Bless the net for enabling me to capture the audio file of Stevie performing Crash. I had to hear it after I read the news and my jaw dropped. Random thoughts caused by bouncing brain waves follow...

Whether you like the performance or not, I hope this signifies a newfound inspiration and off-the-cuff nature for Stevie. Extemely rare for her to add this song her set...and so casually. Obviously she is still inspired by other artists --I'd like to think that she could channel that energy into her own artistry.

Somewhat notable is that she currently has three cover songs in her set - Crash, Rock And Roll, and I Need To Know. I'm not complaining though; I'm usually a fan of the groups she loves, and she seems to put more passion in those songs, and she's just great at singing covers! Also, isn't it curious how she leans more towards songs by men (Circle Dance excluded)?

What's amazing to me is that she chose a song somewhat outside of her genere. Aside from that, it's a song that has a lot of complicated phrasing and structure (relative to Stevie's more typical arrangements). Her rendering is more than a little monatone, but she manages to pull it off! Judging from the sound of the audience response, they really enjoyed it. I'm sure they were all completely stunned! I know I am.

Do you wanna hear the version by Dave Matthews or by Stevie?

Well, Dave Mathews is not wellknown overhere. So I did not know the song itself, what it's about etc.

I have heard or saw a recording of Stevie doing this song somewhere on the web and I thought it's an annoying song. Why didn't she did another stunning up tempo cover or one of her own classics ????

I wouldn't want to hear either version.

However, when I was in 2nd row @ Soundstage I really keyed in on her facial and body movements during the goofy line "hike up your skirt and show me your world."

Stevie's smirk is priceless...and the way she held her skirt was funny. She's awesome.

It seems to me that Stevie was influenced by that David Lynch film about car crashes & the people who derived a sexual pleasure from crashing & who fetishized their automobiles in terms of alloy metals, plastic, & other materials used to fabricate the vehicles.

Actually it was a David Cronenberg film. ;)

As for the song itself, the original has always been a favorite of mine. Very slinky and sexy, and I was quite surprised that Stevie chose to cover it. Only seeing/hearing the YouTube clips, it's hard to judge whether or not it was a successful interpretation, so I'm waiting until I see Soundstage before I offer my verdict. :)
