"Oracle World Wasted My Ambien!"

Who knew living in a city would be so noisy?

We received a few messages this morning regarding mass sleeplessness due to last night's Oracle Open World finale. Even the enchanting Stevie Nick's couldn't keep SF residents from calling the cops to ask what the hell was going on.

OK, I am going to try to sleep. I just can't believe . . . I live 3 miles away from the Cow Palace, and Oracle was having their big "Appreciation Party" there. After closing Howard Street for two blocks downtown for an entire week ...last night they had Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks & Mick Fleetwood (!), Lenny Kravitz, The Engish Beat, and The Smithereens in concert. It was so loud, you could hear it blasting all over the City, and I live 3 miles away from 'it."
And according to the Chronicle, "apparently, the party was set up in tents outside the Cow Palace," which is why many SF residents could hear Billy Joel's wailing. But we're going to go ahead and blame Lenny Kravitz's set. His derivative music and rockstar persona is unsettling, and can be felt near and far.

Why the exclamation point? Did he think that Stevie and Mick died recently or something?

When Anita and I got there last night we heard the very end of the Smithereens and it was insanely loud. I thought to myself "if Stevie is this loud, I will definitely be deaf by the end of the set." I've been to many heavy metals concerts with very loud music and I can handle that with no problem but I think the Smithereens out did all those heavy metal bands. People were walking away because the music was so loud and miserable. Fortunately Stevie's music seemed just right.

Were the live performances really done in tents?

Loud Oracle party at Cow Palace upsets nearby residents
Suzanne Espinosa Solis, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, November 15, 2007
San Francisco -- Hundreds of residents in Daly City and the southern end of San Francisco were awakened during the night Wednesday and early morning Thursday by what some described as pounding music so loud it sounded like the neighbors were throwing a party.

But it wasn't the neighbors.

It was Oracle. And the party was at the Cow Palace.

Phone calls from angry residents poured into both San Francisco and Daly City police departments.

"All I can tell you is we're busy and we're getting a lot of calls about the music," said a Daly City police dispatcher.

When San Francisco resident Judy Einzig, who lives in Glen Park, called police, she was told there was nothing anyone could do about it. She would have to put up with the music until 1 a.m.

That's because Oracle got permits from Daly City to throw its Oracle OpenWorld Appreciation Event.

San Francisco resident John McCormick, who lives about three miles from the Cow Palace, said his wife was awakened by the loud music at about 11:30 p.m.

"I first called City College because I thought that's where it was coming from. But they told me it was coming from the Cow Palace - and I just couldn't believe it. It woke us up. It's that loud," McCormick said.

Apparently, the party was set up in tents outside the Cow Palace.

"It sounds clearly like music, you can hear a beat, the music, voices singing and it fades in and out a little bit. My wife thought it was a neighbor's house," McCormick said.

San Francisco police said the noise doesn't seem to be as big a problem near the Cow Palace. But it's carrying - and sounds louder - about two or three miles away.

Billy Joel's performance was inside the Cow Palace but Stevie and Lenny Kravitz' performances were in the tents.

ANOTHER NEWSPAPER REVIEW

Party hangover: No doubt, Oracle's big confab in San Francisco last week was a big success - but some folks kept awake into the wee hours Thursday by the big blowout "appreciation" concert the tech giant tossed out at the Cow Palace aren't happy at all.

Police in Daly City and San Francisco logged scores of complaints from irate residents kept awake past 1 a.m. by the loud outdoor music. A story posted on SFGate.com got more than 300 responses.

"Do Oracle and Cow Palace think that we working-class people don't work, don't need to get up in the morning, don't have children we need to put to bed and elderly we need to take care of?!" Visitacion Valley resident Selina Low vented.

The concert featured Piano Man Billy Joel, Lenny Kravitz and Fleetwood Mac'ers Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood.

While the noise didn't seem to bother everyone next to the Cow Palace, the sounds bouncing off the surrounding hills apparently drove residents to distraction from Glen Park and Miraloma to the Sunset.

William Wood said he called everyone he could think of trying to find out who was responsible for letting the noisy concert run so late.

"San Francisco says it was Daly City that gave the permit. Daly City says it was the state. Oracle says the problem is with the Cow Palace. The Cow Palace says it knows nothing," Wood said.

In fact, Daly City police Lt. Mike Edwards tells us the Cow Palace is on state property, and therefore the permit was issued at the state level.

Then again, we're told there were no fewer than 16 Daly City cops at the concert, working security on overtime.

We put in a call to Oracle headquarters to see if they were sorry. Must still be recovering - they didn't call back.

Why didnt they have the show at that place in San Jose, I think It's called the HP Pavilion?San Jose is pretty far from San Francisco. Is the HP Pavilion some new corporate name given to the old Shoreline Amphitheatre?
