There was a remake of The Wizard Of Oz in the late 70's or maybe the early 1980's. It had an all Black cast. I think Diana Ross played Dorothy?

Yeah! That was "The Wiz" and Michael Jackson was in it too. I need to rent that! And I'd have to say that was more of an "urban-adaptation" than a remake.

Michael Jackson was in it - played the scarecrow.
I liked it a lot actually - found it VERY memorable.
But i.m.o. that was meant as a "tribute," more than an actual remake.
You don't mess with "perfection."

Hmm...dont touch WoZ. Its not a favorite of mine, but I wont argue that it isnt a classic.

I would much rather see a live action "Alice in Wonderland"...or that twisted version they made a game of a few years back.

I would rather call it a reimagining or a prequel, but there is the book and the musical 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.' I adore the book and really like the musical. It adds another layer to the story. As for remaking the film: HELL NO. I cringe everytime I hear anyone other than Judy sing 'Over the Rainbow.'

Don't smack me, but I never really got into The Wizard Of Oz. But...they have an interesting miniseries on SciFi Channel in December called Tin Man. It takes the original and puts a really kewl spin on it.

If they remade the Wizard of Oz, I wouldn't go see it.
I didn't like the original and, as a general rule, I hate musicals anyway.

I would probably cry if they remade it.
most remakes are horrible.

I actually like this movie, and I would hate to see it ruined by a new cast.

I know it's sacrilege to say so, but I hate this movie. When I was little I really thought Dorothy was a moron until I had to read the book for school and saw that the character is supposed to be much younger than Judy Garland looks. Plus I always thought it was rude of the character to say she'd miss the Scarecrow most of all right in front of other friends who were crying that she was leaving. And don't get me started on where the hell was Glinda when the Wicked Witch was threatening Toto or setting the Scarecrow on fire - is the "good" witch only available when it comes to kiolling flowers with snow?

For the record, I was bored out of my skull when I saw The Wiz as a small child (and I sat through the Incredible Shrinking Woman and the Raggedy Ann & Andy Movie - okay, in fairness, that Raggedy movie was even worse). But I did get a kick out of the mother from What's Happening running a sweat shop, and for a long time afterwards I assumed that's where she was working on the show while Dee was asking Roj or Rerun for a quarter.

I do have a professor who sounds just like Margaret Hamilton, though, & sometimes I picture her with a green face while she talks.

Wow. You've put a lot of thought into this. I just watched this last night for the first time in a few years.... since Sara was much smaller.

Apparently they wanted Shirley Temple for the role but couldn't get her. Judy Garland was 17 at the time.. playing a 9 year old. They had to strap down her bust!

Return to Oz is truly creepy and demented. I own it on DVD and I find it much better than the Wizard of Oz (which was neat as a child, but now I can not stomach it). However, even though I do not like the original film, I also say leave it alone and do not remake it.

I would much rather see a live action "Alice in Wonderland"...or that twisted version they made a game of a few years back.

There are several live versions of Alice in Wonderland, some older, some newer and some better than others. A fairly decent one has an all start cast with Tina Majorino (Alice) and has Martin Short as the Mad Hatter (brilliant performance).

However, American McGee's Alice is apparently currently in production after a rocky start to the project and is scheduled for a 2008 release with Sara Michelle Gellar as Alice. It will be live action but remember this is not an adaptation of the true story, but a story based on the video game. The story happens later in Alice's life.

I saw a billboard advertising a new film....Tinman. Something about life after Oz. I'll have to look it up.
