Was she? :shocked:Well, you know, I guess it's all relative.

I saw her back in '85 & the audience thought she was fat.

Fat, thin, tall, petite, it's metabolic fluctuation. In fact, I prefer "metabolically challenged" to "fat." Now some docs are saying that excess fat doesn't necessarily put you at greater risk for coronary artery disease or heart disease or even diabetes. Still, eat more fatty fish & less fatty red meat (but don't ask me why). Above all, wiggle your ass more vigorously to Stevie Nicks songs & you will burn those calories!

Stevie has always been a beautiful lady but her beauty on the outside does not matter. It is only her beauty on the inside & her kindness & her concern for others that make her the lady that she is.

Just to clarify though for other ledgies, i am not having a dig at her, nor being nasty whatsoever, im just curious. Are there any big stevie photos?

I never thought she looked as overweight as people (La Nicks herself included) said she was. As you say -- lots of layers, but I never really saw it either. I could watch that Blue Denim video from dawn until dusk. She looked amazing.

I think the only time I ever thought she looked overweight was at the Clinton's inauguration. I hadn't seen her in a while and it was a bit of a shock for me- she was still beautiful though.

When she was young she was one of the super thin so anything after that (which of course is normal while we age) seemed bigger to people, I guess.

But that goes for every era. (And it depends on the angle also. ;)) You can definitely see the weight gain during that time as opposed to a few years earlier -you'd have to be blind not to see it- and I understand why Stevie was bothered by it, especially considering her profession and the smack talk she received from the media. With women, appearances are what's focused on, and that's rather frustrating when you are trying to bring forth and achieve something completely different.

I understand why Stevie was bothered by it, especially considering her profession and the smack talk she received from the media. Stevie maintains that she cut the 1994 tour way short because of all the weight-related comments in reviews. I've never seen an actual review of a 1994 show that made a rotten comment about weight gain. Does anyone have one she could share? I don't see one in BLA.

At least not one where she was put down because of her weight. I do think a few mentioned it, but not in a rotten way. But any mention of it can kind of be considered rude, no?

Was it during Tango era that dj's were making fun of her weight gain? Mirror?

Nope, never seen one. At least not one where she was put down because of her weight. I do think a few mentioned it, but not in a rotten way. But any mention of it can kind of be considered rude, no?I'm just wondering what specifically hurt her that year to the extent that she would wrap up a tour early & go home. I think it may have been talk from inside her camp -- possibly her management with "career advice" -- rather than from the public or from newspaper writers, most of whom seemed to ignore Stevie pretty much by that point anyway (except for that silly Jancee Dunn at Rolling Stone, who seemed to think that by painting Stevie as used up or a has-been, she was re-mythologizing her).

Was it during Tango era that dj's were making fun of her weight gain? Mirror?I don't remember. I guess catty comments on radio were made all through those years. Sometimes jokes take on a life of their own -- they become trendy -- & go way beyond the original criticism. I do remember that jokes about the inaugural ball appearance even reached the newsroom where I was working. Maybe it wasn't specifically 1994 tour reviews that hurt her but things said from the prior year or two, & when Stevie actually got out on the road in 1994, those things started brewing in her brain again & disturbed her.

I don't remember any reviews but I do recall 2 local DJs commenting on it, one said something like he say her at a benefit and instead of walking up to the buffet table to take food back to her seat she instead just pulled her chair up to the buffet.

The weight she gained looked more like bloating to me which is caused by medications. And the fact that she is only 5'1 makes it look worse. I must admit i was not happy seeing her look so so very round.

STEVIE NICKS AT TOP FORM, SCARVES AND ALL
JANE SCOTT PLAIN DEALER ROCK REPORTER
Stevie Nicks still has that knack.

The former Fleetwood Mac singer may be 46. She hasn't toured in three years. But she gave a vivid, warm-hearted 95-minute show Wednesday night at Blossom Music Center that proved again she is one of rock's top female singers.

She has been a solo artist since 1980, with her first album, "Bella Donna," going quadruple platinum. Still she was a more satisfying representative of the old Mac than last month's Fleetwood Mac show at Blossom, which had only two original members and a shrill new singer.

Though Nicks did only three Mac songs, they were powerful choices, "Dreams," "Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)" and "Gold Dust Woman."

She had an enchantment, almost kind of a magic at her first solo show here in July 1983, and she still has. She flowed on stage Wednesday in a black lacy dress with a long scarf and black lace gloves. She had six changes of scarves through the show. Even the mike was draped in black fringe. But somehow these suit her. She has lost weight since her last show here.

The backdrop, a large (almost 18 feet high) gold-framed picture over Victorian wallpaper, gave you the warm touch of being in your own living room. The stage was dark as the 11-member band played "Outside the Rain" from "Bella Donna," segueing into the Mac's 1975 No. 1 song, "Dreams."

Nicks' blond hair, straight, full and very fluffy was a little bit of a surprise, but her voice wasn't - as strong as ever, though a little less breathy.

She did the mystic "Rhiannon" with the sad cry, "Don't leave me now," early. bringing the crowd to its feet. The song seemed to have a life of its own, changing pace, changing mood. Nicks wound up twirling with her scarf held out like wings.

"Stand Back," from her platinum solo album, "The Wild Heart," was a great contrast, almost wall-to-wall sound, with Nicks's lyrics echoed by her three back-ups, Sharon Celani, Lisa Jane Edwards and Sara Fleetwood, ex-wife of Mick Fleetwood.

One of the new songs, "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind," from Nicks' current "Street Angel" album, was as melodic and catchy as earlier hits. Fans lit candles at the start of another "Street Angel" track, "Destiny." They already knew it. It was recycled from a 1982 release.

The only mediocre track was "Docklands." Her new "Listen to the Rain" would have been a better choice."

Nicks' set closer, her "Edge of Seventeen (Just Like a White Winged Dove)" was a complete change of pace, almost an angry outcry, with Nicks falling to her knees. It also triggered the offering of roses as well as teddy bears and Stevie Nicks dolls from front row fans. Nicks shook hands as she accepted them. This has become a heartfelt ritual. Fortunately it only occurs on one song.

Nicks fans, 6,000 at this show, have become as dedicated as Deadheads. Brianna Marie Imbordini of suburban Brooklyn, 9, wasn't the only fan dressed in Nicks-like scarves. High school teacher Jeff Feinberg drove in from Buffalo for the show.

The opening act was Darden Smith, a towering Texan who had a gem of a song, "Levee Song," which he had co-written with Chip Taylor, writer of "Wild Thing." Smith did most of his pieces on his acoustic guitar, but sang another splendid track, "Loving Arms," with lot of gusto. Both Nicks and Smith had songs called "Talk to Me," though Smith's was more seductive. Smith's voice isn't as distinctive as Nicks, but he's on his way.

NICKS DYLANESQUE;
SPIN DOCS GET HAPPY

DEBORAH WILKER

STEVIE NICKS : Street Angel (Modern Records).

The image of a weary, flat Stevie Nicks wretching through Don't Stop at President Clinton's inaugural bash was more jolt than joy. Is this what had become of Fleetwood Mac? A bunch of broken-down hippies who could barely zip up and keep time?

What should have been a glorious return was instead an uncomfortable embarrassment. The reunion offers did not come pouring in.

Nicks wisely has kept her distance from that moment, laying low for the past 18 months while time did the fade-job on the national memory bank. She's out of Fleetwood Mac for good, has a new life and home in Arizona and a new solo set - her fifth since 1981.

Whatever circumstances led to that dreadful inaugural performance aren't evident on this pleasant collection of lite rockers.

That froggy rasp of hers has been likened to Bob Dylan's for years, but never has Nicks captured as much of his edge than on this set. Whether it's the age in her voice, or simple admiration for him, she has got him down, particularly on an adoring cover of Just Like a Woman. Then there's also Blue Denim, during which she reaches for low notes, and in missing them just a bit, contorts as only Dylan can.

But Dylan is hardly the focus of what is essentially the usual shredded-heart set, featuring women who lose big in love and bound back strong. Standouts include Unconditional Love and the heavenly Destiny (which would have made a much better first single than Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind).

Stellar session work from Andy Fairweather Low, Roy Bittan, Waddy Wachtel, Dave Crosby and Dylan himself bring the whole thing up a notch, though brighter melodies throughout would have truly brought it home.

FINAL EXIT AT THE BOULDER THEATER?

MICHAEL MEHLE

The fat lady is warming up at the Boulder Theater, and I'm not talking about Stevie Nicks .

Boulder voters drubbed a proposed hotel tax hike that would have allowed the city to buy, renovate and run the theater, a la the city-owned Chautauqua Auditorium.

Those fighting to save one of the area's most comfortable, best sounding theaters are meeting next week to brainstorm a last-ditch effort.

They'd best hurry. Theater owners would prefer to sell it to the city, but they have other offers waiting in the wings. Presumably, not all of those offers include keeping the landmark a theater. The site has always been targeted for another clothes store, condos or offices.

Boulder voters were given their chance, and the message was clear: 18,523 against, 12,878 for the proposal, which was battled furiously by the city's hotel owners.

"I understand the issue was big and complicated," promoter Nona Gandelman said. "But from a cultural standpoint, we need a theater like this."

The venue has been closed since summer 1993, when taxes and creditors finally caught up with then-owner Dick Macleod. Following foreclosure, the theater's original owner has been keeping some music alive by allowing the producers of E-Town to lease the building cheaply.

But it's a far cry from the early '90s, when the theater was the top mid-sized venue in the state.

Its demise helped open the door for several other venues, but none has filled the bill of the 58-year-old art-deco beauty on 14th Street just off the Pearl Street Mall.

The Fox Theatre on University Hill seats about half as many people. And "seats" isn't quite the right word for its room with remarkable sound but few actual spots to sit.

The Bluebird Theater on East Colfax Avenue comes close to matching the ambiance of the Boulder Theater, but is half the size. The Ogden Theatre, also on East Colfax, is the same size (about 1,000 capacity) as the Boulder venue, but has been a better draw for louder, younger bands.

The Paramount Theatre is just too expensive and too large (about 2,000 seats) for many acts to fill.

"We've been at this a long time," said E-Town's Nick Forster, who has been fighting for the venue while leasing it for the weekly show. "It's time for something concrete to happen. We must save this theater."

Soaked: You won't hear the singers of Soak moaning about their day jobs.

But then, it's not as if they're collating copies at a law firm. Shawn Farmer and Jim Hale are professional snowboarders, and if there's anything equitable to being paid to rock 'n' roll, it may be collecting a paycheck for shredding mountains.

It's the other members of Soak who must make amends for their singers' occupations and new locations.

Farmer now lives in Lake Tahoe, Calif., and Hale in Seattle. That poses a bit of a problem for a Denver band.

"We don't play very often," explains bassist Erik Oberhausen. "It's a matter of collecting air fares to get where we need to be. If it's an event worth going to, we figure it out and go there."

Oberhausen, drummer Jason Smith and guitarist Larry Denning are mainstays of Denver's revolving rock circuit, having done their dues with bands ranging from Bum Kon to Jux County to Acid Ranch.

They keep their toes in other bands while waiting for the sporadic shows with Soak, a band that combines metal riffs and rap.

A lot of those gigs coincide with - surprise - snowboarding competitions.

Last year Soak played the King of the Hill snowboarding contest in Valdez, Alaska, sharing the bill with national punkers Offspring and Pennywise. Next year, Soak will likely play at California's Mammoth Mountain for Board Aid, a combination competition and celebration for snowboarders.

Last year's Alaska show was even more logistically difficult than usual, because drummer Jason Smith and guitarist Larry Denning were living in San Francisco while playing with Jux County.

"We were all over the country," Oberhausen said.

Now, at least three of the fivesome call Denver home. Farmer and Hale flew in earlier this week to rehearse for 10 p.m. shows at the Lion's Lair Friday and at Seven South Saturday.

If you miss them this weekend, you'll have quite a wait.

"Oh, it could be awhile," Oberhausen said. "Maybe next summer."

Some of the weight-gain was spotted by me as early as 1988. On the TITN tour stops I caught, she looked skinny and also looked very very skinny in the press. But during the press for the FM Greatest Hits Stevie looked very bloated and I thought she looked more bloated on the Timespace Tour and the BTM tour than on Street Angel.

the outfit she wore at the inaugural didn't do her any favors. The whole thing looked too tight, the shoulder pads were ludicrous, and the top hat added no glamour and looked out of place. Her face in particular, looked very bloated and her eyes didn't look very 'alert'. Not even a good hair night for her.

BEAUTIFUL DELIVERY! Very nice. I am impressed, sir.

Anyway, Blue Denim is the worst song in Stevie Nicks' song-writing history. If I took It's Too Late by Carole King, "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper, added some adjectives, ate the paper I wrote this all down on, and then proceeded to use the restroom, whatever was left in the toilet would be "Blue Denim."

I just think its terrible. I don't know, Stevie is usually such an amazing song writer, such depth to her lyrics, but she wrote Blue Denim around A PAIR OF JEANS! Its like me seeing a girl wearing a paisley sweater, and me going home, writing a song about how she reminded me of a Peacock. Its ridiculous. :distress:

You know, Michele, "the fat lady" comments are still being made today.

I got this off of a Nascar racing site:

They say it isn’t over until the fat lady sings – that it ain’t over ’til it’s over. Where’s Stevie Nicks when you need her?
I know, Jeff Gordon still has a mathematical chance of catching Jimmy Johnson and capturing the last Nextel Cup Championship. This isn’t about arithmetic folks. Watching Johnson the last four weeks could deflate Al Gore at a PETA convention. It’s over.
Maybe someone different could win a race for a change though – like Smoke Stewart or somebody in a Ford. How about one of the Busch brothers – it is Florida after-all?
Maybe Dale Earnhardt Jr will make all happy – steal one of Truex Jr’s cars – and thwart the evil desires of Broomhilda.
I need a drink. But first take a cruise on the multi-tiered, variably-banked four corners of this week’s Fast Lap questions.
1) Will the 48 team continue their “race to win strategy” at Homestead or will they race for 18th?
2) Is Homestead the best place to finish the season?
3) Should Petty Enterprises merge/partner with Gillett-Evernham?
4) Will any of the three 2008 open wheel rookies not make it to the end of the season?
It’s Championship week ON PIT ROW. Give these babies your best and we may feature you on the show. We may also pillory you at the same time, but it’s all in fun. It’s the Fast Lap, ON PIT ROW and at the Thunder Lounge.

The way she has slimmed down these days I don't think Stevie could be called "fat" by anyone, not even Kate Moss.

I was and am taken by the jaunty Blue Denim. Certainly, it's more pedestrian than Stevie's other songs. One doesn't expect Stevie to write about cars or denim or . . . Well, at least it's no forgotten chimpanzee!

Ok, I think the song would've been a lot more tolerable if it wasn't titled Blue Denim and didn't have the words "Blue Denim" in it.

I saw him the other day
I saw him again...yesterday
I wonder if I'll ever see him again
He reminded me of something I lost

Blue-gray eyes...they change with the color...
Change with the sun...they run with the sight
They change with the wind...but they're always bright
Bright eyes...
Bright eyes...

I knew him another way
I knew him another day
In some ways he'd forgotten me
In many ways he got to me
I turned away so he couldn't see
I turned away...it could never be
I never thought he could walk away
But I lost him again...yesterday

Understanding me...understanding you
Is not an easy thing to do
Understanding me...and understanding you
Is not an easy thing to do

And I will never forget...
The last time I saw you
Like a photograph...so rare
Like a painting
No I will never forget...
The last time I saw you
Never to be...not you...not me
No...no...

So I'm going away for a little while
To remember how to feel
And if I find the answer...
I promise you...I'll come back and get you
I'll come back and get you
I'll come back and get you

Just by taking out "Blue Denim" the song takes on a whole other form, it could've been called "Another Day."

And why can't you get into Two Kinds of Love?

I love 'Blue Denim', and it seems I'm in the minority here. But, I loved it a little 'less' when the story started circulating about 11 years ago that it was written for this crazy, deranged dude that used to post in any Stevie forum he could find (AOL, alt.music.stevie nicks, etc). I won't say his name, but the initials are BG.

I dunno, something about the first opening bars and the trills of the organ get my arms swinging at my flower-draped mic.

Ok, I think the song would've been a lot more tolerable if it wasn't titled Blue Denim and didn't have the words "Blue Denim" in it.

I saw him the other day
I saw him again...yesterday
I wonder if I'll ever see him again
He reminded me of something I lost

Blue-gray eyes...they change with the color...
Change with the sun...they run with the sight
They change with the wind...but they're always bright
Bright eyes...
Bright eyes...

I knew him another way
I knew him another day
In some ways he'd forgotten me
In many ways he got to me
I turned away so he couldn't see
I turned away...it could never be
I never thought he could walk away
But I lost him again...yesterday

Understanding me...understanding you
Is not an easy thing to do
Understanding me...and understanding you
Is not an easy thing to do

And I will never forget...
The last time I saw you
Like a photograph...so rare
Like a painting
No I will never forget...
The last time I saw you
Never to be...not you...not me
No...no...

So I'm going away for a little while
To remember how to feel
And if I find the answer...
I promise you...I'll come back and get you
I'll come back and get you
I'll come back and get you

Just by taking out "Blue Denim" the song takes on a whole other form, it could've been called "Another Day."

And why can't you get into Two Kinds of Love?
its not the same if it doesnt rhyme :(
love songs need to rhyme.

I personally LOVE Street Angel [the album....]
Its amazing.
Blue Denim is probably my second favourite song off of it.
MLWCYM is the first [yeah, Stevie Didnt write it. oh well!]

And whats so wrong about comparing someones eyes to a pair of blue jeans??? its at least not a bad of a cliche as comparing them to 'the sky on a summers day' -.-

I don't particularly like Two Kinds of Love, but I don't hate it either.

I would say that for "the way you walk" line, I don't interpret it as "walk," step or stride. I read it more as "walk away". I think that goes along with the other lyrics about someone being on the run, on an endless search for love. So, for me it's like, "I love you for 2 reasons: one for the way you leave and one for the way you stay." I love you for the way you go and the way you stay and love me. Which also reminds me of the seemingly contradictory words in a later song (Love is knowing you won't let go, love is watching you go).

And, of course, I like the rise of emotion for the "outraged with each other, engaged to each other" part.

I never disliked Street Angel as much as Stevie did. It might be my least favorite of hers generally, but sometimes I like it more than I do Rock a Little.

BEAUTIFUL DELIVERY! Very nice. I am impressed, sir.

Anyway, Blue Denim is the worst song in Stevie Nicks' song-writing history. If I took It's Too Late by Carole King, "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper, added some adjectives, ate the paper I wrote this all down on, and then proceeded to use the restroom, whatever was left in the toilet would be "Blue Denim."

you're crazy

I'm sorry, but no, that spot is saved for Two Kinds of Love.

I love Blue Denim. Street Angel wasn't all that bad, y'all.

you're crazy

i love blue denim. i get why, liam, you think it's kinda corny that she uses "blue denim" and you can't get beyond it. But really, if you think about almost all of her songs, they can be corny if taken literally

just like the white winged dove, sings a song it sounds like she's singing
"whoo, baby whoo, said whoo"

are you kidding me??

don't hide behind your hair, it's a bit of gold and braid.

there are tons more, but you get the point. but it's stevie. she can get away with that crap like no one else, because girlfriend owns it. ya know? she makes you believe that it's not cheesy. and that's why I love her.

Which also reminds me of the seemingly contradictory words in a later song (Love is knowing you won't let go, love is watching you go). How can you love someone for leaving? I think I get what you mean, but your wording is a little strange. The way I see it, in both songs, she's saying that it takes love to leave someone in order to let that particular person grow/become a better person/find themselves. Take your pick.

I think the songs are unrelated though. They might deal with the same subject matter, but they pertain to two different events. And Love Is far outshines Two Kinds of Crap.

And, of course, I like the rise of emotion for the "outraged with each other, engaged to each other" part. The only redeeming part.

I guess the difference is most of the lyrics could be corny in a fairy sort of way, while Blue Denim is corny in a truck driver sort of way.

But actually I think it's a nice way to describe someone's eyes. Kind of elevates jeans into something beautiful and romantic.

she can get away with that crap like no one else, because girlfriend owns it. ya know? she makes you believe that it's not cheesy. and that's why I love her.

Yes and her voice can take it to another level, so that the words mean more than their Webster's Dictionary definition. I know someone said they hated Gate and Garden and I couldn't understand why and then she wrote out the lyrics and I was like, "Oh, I see. Well, when you put it that way." I mean, the lyrics on paper are kind of stupid. But when Stevie is screaming them with that wild heart voice she had at the time . . . the words are quite secondary.

Well, that used to be true for me anyway. More recently, even when there's passion in the vocal, the song can leave me cold. I'm thinking Silver Girl, Sweet Girl and RTTG. I will say that, for the latter, I don't blame Stevie completely. I think that garden could have used some pruning by the producer.

How can you love someone for leaving?

Oh, I think it's easy to love someone for leaving, especially if by leaving they were taking the high road.

I mean, I'm not saying that this song is about that, but let's just use Jimmy as an example. Stevie says she was unreasonable at that stage of her life and he didn't like the drug use. If you leave a situation like that, a person in a situation like that, there could be a certain integrity in your doing so.

On the other hand, if you love someone enough, maybe you won't leave. Maybe you'd stay and try to help them survive. But actually, I think the song is more about the love you have for someone, rather than whether their conduct warrants that love. I do think that when someone walks out, you tend to love them more, because of the emptiness and the void left in their wake. You love them more because you miss them, even if they deserve that love less, because they abandoned you. I think the guys that walk out have more allure than the guys that you kick to the curb. It's like when I hear the Joe Walsh stories, I think "what a jerk and good riddance" but I think him being that way, not chasing her, leaving her, using her, kind of enhanced Stevie's feelings for him. Made her want him more.

I don't think Love Is is about the same thing. In Love Is someone has to leave against their will. They want to stay and she wants them to stay, but circumstances won't allow. So, I don't think the two songs are related by the writer. I just relate them in my own head. I just think the words remind me of each other.

I don't diss RAL. I pretty much like the whole thing, but am burned out on HAEWAFY at this point in time, although I liked it well enough when I first heard it.

Rock and Roll has become a thorn in my side, something I can't touch because it hurts too much. I Can't Wait was not my favorite, but if she'd substitute that for Rock and Roll, I'd be in heaven. She could come out for the encore, playing the I Can't Wait video in the background, her breaking through the wall . . . Perfection.

No Spoken Word and Some Become Strangers would be on the top of my "Please perform live" list and that's true of Strangers, even though I usually hate for them to perform songs they didn't write.

I don't think she ever looked "bad", but honestly there were times during the "Klonopin Era" when she was much heavier than now. This is the thinnest (Rosemont) that I recall ever seeing her and I go back to the late 70s with seeing her live during Rumours. in the 80s, the thought of being confined to the house in AZ and passing out at a friends home and hitting your head on the fireplace still reverberates with me.

On another note, anyone give any thought to who Stevie dated that was almost 20 years younger than her (Billy Corgan comes to mind)??? She would have been 49 and he was about 29 in 1996-1997 when he bought a home and moved to AZ. Any thoughts on this??? I know they were good friends when he did Landslide. I am thinking Billy for sure.

And why can't you get into Two Kinds of Love?
"Well I talked to my famous friend last night
My third day up...well, his second nighter
He says, "I don't know how you do what you do...how do you
let the world in?"
Well I say, 'Well there's no way out...'
Then I just play out the game
Well the two of us...Widow and a Dove"

Making poor Bruce Hornsby say "Well" all those times must have given him a stroke or something.

1 - Gate and Garden is a phenomenal song once you get passed what is so often criticized about the song.

2 - Blue Denim is another phenomenal song that gets lost in most people's disdain for Street Angel.

3 - Rock A Little has some awesome songs that I love more than the hits on that record...such as Some Become Strangers and If I Were You.

4 - Clinton event was Stevie at her absolute worst-looking ever, imo, but that's no surprise.

Yes, I remember looking at her bare arms during NGBA in the SYW tour, while she was over to the side dressing for Rhiannon.

Actually though, today, I wouldn't be surprised if she is a size 8. It's hard to tell with the layers she wears and the sound equipment which adds extra bulges, but she looks small. Not toned and taut, like in the old days, but . . . frankly I think a size 12 would be too big for her. Of course, since most of the fashionable celebrities are a size 0 now, 8 isthe new 12:laugh:

I think I hated Stevie's looks (& performance) the most at the tail end of the 1990 Fleetwood Mac tour, during which I was unlucky enough to see the Oakland Coliseum show in person & to watch the Bethlehem PA video, & then after that I hated her big shoulder pads & huge hair on the Timespace tour (reminds me of when John Simon once referred to Yoko Ono's hair as a "Disneyland for the insect world"). Stevie on her Street Angel tour was totally bitchin & supremely excellent for her age.

the part bolded is the only part from the section you quoted that is bruce singing. and not one "well"
You may want to pull out your copy of TOSOTM . Actually, Bruce sings "Well the two of us" by himself and then Stevie joins in on the "Widow and a Dove" part.

Also, Bruce sings all the choruses with Stevie, which contain the "Well, I've already done..." and the "Well, the two us, well we must be..." parts. Too many wells in that song.

Ok, I think the song would've been a lot more tolerable if it wasn't titled Blue Denim and didn't have the words "Blue Denim" in it.

I saw him the other day
I saw him again...yesterday
I wonder if I'll ever see him again
He reminded me of something I lost

Blue-gray eyes...they change with the color...
Change with the sun...they run with the sight
They change with the wind...but they're always bright
Bright eyes...
Bright eyes...

I knew him another way
I knew him another day
In some ways he'd forgotten me
In many ways he got to me
I turned away so he couldn't see
I turned away...it could never be
I never thought he could walk away
But I lost him again...yesterday

Understanding me...understanding you
Is not an easy thing to do
Understanding me...and understanding you
Is not an easy thing to do

And I will never forget...
The last time I saw you
Like a photograph...so rare
Like a painting
No I will never forget...
The last time I saw you
Never to be...not you...not me
No...no...

So I'm going away for a little while
To remember how to feel
And if I find the answer...
I promise you...I'll come back and get you
I'll come back and get you
I'll come back and get you

Just by taking out "Blue Denim" the song takes on a whole other form, it could've been called "Another Day."

And why can't you get into Two Kinds of Love?

I have always thought that. had it not been called blue denim, or contained the reference. I do love it though. another day is not a bad title.

I waited for the debut on VH-1 for this video, they announced in advance so I sat through all sorts of VH-1 dreck until it came on. And I was like..."huh?"

Don't get me wrong, I do like the video and it was well done. It just took me a little by suprise. I had a 'start', as they say. I had not seen Stevie's face so wide in a long...well, ever. And so many close-ups, again with the wide face! One might think a sympathetic director could have corrected this somewhat by using a longer shot, gauze over the lens or something. Remember the Paula Abdul 'Promise of a New Day' vid where the director stretched the image vertically to give her a less boxy looking face when SHE put on some pounds?

Other than that, I love the gorgeous interior shots, the lamps, the bed with the long nets of white, the party scene...

Not her best moment. I remember Howard Stern saying at the time that they should have made Stevie an honorary member of Heart.

I couldn't wait for this appearance when I heard about it. I remember my mom telling me that she heard on an early news program (today or good morning america) that stevie had some minor cosmetic surgery in preparation for the inauguration. not sure what was done or if that's even true. anyone hear this too? geez, what the heck did they do???

i was in complete horror when they showed the first close-up of her. the optimist that i was, i'm thinking and hoping she had really slimmed down to do this thing for the president. just when i thought she couldn't look worse than the previous years, to me it appeared that she had put on even more weight.

imo, this was her heaviest. you can see it all over her but mostly in her face. maybe it was just puffiness from medication but nonetheless bloat is bloat. but it was sad that this was the same lady whose face (and music etc) cast a spell on me (yeah, no pun blah blah blah) way back in 1981. oh, i completely gave up hope at that point. i never made fun of her or put her down personally or musically. but i couldn't help thinking, "what the hell is wrong with her? she's letting herself go." but i also knew it was a combination of the excess partying of years past and age that finally caught up to her. we didn't know at the time that she was on klonopin.

ahhh, yes, now it all makes sense.

You know what else? I think she did her eyes different that night. Her lids are usually darker and her lashes more pronounced. They look different. And of course, they are half closed too. And it's not just this pic, the whole time she was on stage she had that look. It's like she just woke up- and maybe she did.

And, the shoulders on the outfit for the inaugural were just the zenith of wrongness. And the waist too tight, the whole outfit looks too tight and even the hat looks like it's not fitting right.

Nope, the whole package that night was a darn shame. How lucky we all were, that she came back strong in '97 for The Dance special and tour.

that's exactly what i thought...thanks for speaking my mind! i think streetangel86 thinks she wasn't big in the video. otherwise i think one would say, "i think she was packing a lot in that video" rather than "i don't think she wasn't packing not a lot of weight in that video never..." paraphrasing of course. or, not paraphrasing never.

actually...i'm going to annoy the hell out of all of you (since i'm loony and just waking up and having my first cup of coffee) and rewrite my post using double (and maybe triple negatives...then again, wouldn't a triple negative be like a single negative?)...

The worst? Oh, I disagree. Definitely not one of her best, but not the worst. It's cool that you don't like the tune, but to say it's her worst is a bit much, don't you think?

We've talked about this in the past (I should try to dig up the thread) and as much as I love this silly song, I'd have to agree with many people's opinion that The Nightmare is one of her worst as far as songwriting goes. Cut & paste lyrics anyone?

As far as thin vs. fat Stevie, I think the reason people started calling her fat in the 80's was that she had put on weight & looked different. Was she techinically overweight? Probably not at first, but the woman was barely 100 pounds for the first 10 years of her popularity, so the public only knew here as teeny tiny waif Stevie. Too see her with some meat on her bones was probably shocking, and we all know how the media exaggerates everything.

Early 90's were her heaviest years, but I don't think the weight was the reason she didn't look good - IMO it was that dead look in her eyes, like she was half asleep all the time. She looked worn out & tired. I doubt she weighed much more than 170 or 180 at her heaviest, but on a small 5' frame, it's a lot. The difference between Street Angel & The Dance is striking. She's definitely put on weight since '97 (especially on the latter part of the SYW tour) but I think she looks damn good for an almost 60 year old lady.

Hey Paula!

I agree with you! I don't think Blue Denim is by far Stevie's worst song.. LOL.. Here are the words to "The Nightmare" :

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Nightmare
- written by s. nicks, c. nicks
- appears on Rock A Little (1985)
- b-side of single & 12" single I Can’t Wait (U.S. July 1986); 12" single contains

extended mix
Lyrics

Thrown down through the arms of sleep
She fell through the ivory morning
Deep into the waters
Of the one she called love
She paled in the wake
Of what some call a dream
But, you cannot know a dream
Till you've known the nightmare

When I stood with you against the storm
And I tried once again
Well, I said, "I'd like to leave you
With something warm"
How many times
Drowning in the sea
Drowning
That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But, the nightmare was not over
Still some call that a dream
The nightmare...the nightmare

Well, you cannot know a dream
When you turn away
You don't know
You'll never care
The night is not your friend
And you have not had her
And when the nightmare ends
But, you never understand
When you're gone
She wakes up calling out
Oh, calling out
As children may cry as she will

Anytime...oh, anywhere
Blinded by the light of the day
She has known the nightmare

So about the moon and her sisters
How dare he take them prisoner
Well, if she had flung out her heart against him
Then in all of her wisdom
Oh, well that was a mystery

That was when the dream took her prisoner
And she knew the dream was over
But the nightmare was not over
Somewhere in her ancient ways
She walks through the night
And then she tries to get through the day
Some will never know
Or share any kind of dream

The nightmare
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the world
The nightmare
She wants him to fight...anytime, anywhere
She wants him to stand up
She wants him to win
This is not the world
This is not the world
This is not the real world
Blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the light
She was blinded by the light of the day
Blinded by the day

I read over those words & I think to myself: that's one of the best songs Stevie has ever written -- one of the most romantic, most genuinely storm-tossed, most believable expressions of love & fright & anxiety & all the rest. It's Stevie's Odyssey: a woman takes an unwilling voyage into the Dark Heart, & puts her faith in Love & in Love's ability to return her to Ithaca, but she can't get back. Plus, the epic music & vocals are unforgettable. If I remember one Stevie song, it will be this one, probably -- this one or Crystal.

I think a lot of it was those huge costumes, shoulder pads, etc that made her look so huge in the early 90s. When she puts the Stand Back cape on, she doesn't look big- like that Flip Wilson show clip from 91 I think.

And I think she may be as thin as she was during the Dance era, if not thinner,on the CV tour. She was tiny when I saw her in Atlanta, I was really taken aback!

Definately agree with David that 'The Nightmare' is no throw-away (unless my Asperger's Syndrome is kicking in full-tilt and preventing me from reading irony in your last post).

My best example of a throw-away with pieced together lyrics and imagery is 'Affairs of The Heart'.
