View Full Version : Your name

Brought up in the "I wish" thread. Have your parents ever told you they were going to give you a different name? Or what your name would have been if you had been born the opposite sex? Do you wish your name was different, and if so, what name would you choose?
My mom was going to name me Jennifer. No offense to any Jennifers here, but I am not a Jennifer. Def. not a Jenny either.
I was named after my grandfather, who was Pavel, which is Paul. If I were a boy I would have been Paul. The woman typing up my birth certificate glanced quickly at my name & put me down as a boy - needless to say, my parents had to have that changed. :o I am, and always have been, a female, thank you very much.
I like my name - not that common, but not bizarre either. I thin kI'll keep it. :D

As posted in the "I wish" thread. My mom wanted to name me Morning Star. She was going to call me Star. My dad stepped in. I was named Cameron. I always hated it growing up but I was always called Cammie, which I didn't mind since it was different. Now I like it and I use it professionally because it is easier to understand over the phone.
I can't really see myself with another name now, so I'll keep it as well.

My mom was going to name me either Noel or Emmanuel because I was born so close to Christmas.
My dad had a co-worker named Noel who he hated - so he vetoed that. And Emmanuel was the name of a porn series thing - so he vetoed that.
Then my mom was going to name me Danielle (after my uncle Danny) - but that was vetoed as apparently they thought, at birth, I'd be a moron - they figured that would be too hard for me to learn to spell what that time came
And I still don't know how she ended up with Deanna - but that one stuck! I pretty much hated my name growing up as no one could get it right. I was, and still am, always being called: Dana, Diana, Dina....I mean come on, how hard is Deanna...really?
When I go to a restaurant and they ask my name I always say, "DEEEEanna..." like I really emphasize - yet I almost always still get called "Diana".
I've gotten used to my name over the years but have never really liked it.

Well I've been told "Ian" was supposed to be my first name...which is Scottish for "John"...(which is my Dads first name and my grandpas first name). But they didnt want a John Jones III since I have a twin he mightve felt left out. So they named me Brandon.
If I have a son...God forbid...I'm naming him Indiana. You can guess what my last name is.

My friend was named Deana (pronounced Dee-na) after Dean Martin. :p People always call her Dee-anna.

Thank god someone came to their senses and thought of Michael! Something good came out of it though. It gave my mom a legitimate reason to hate her mother in law. :D

If I was a boy, I was supposed to be called Matthew.
My mom wanted to call me Asher Lee. Thank goodness my father stepped in with this and suggested Lindsey. Asher Lee is a tad Gone With The Wind-ish to me and I definitely don't fit the southern belle mold. ;)

Before I was born my parents had decided that if I was a boy my father would pick my name and if a girl, my mother. Had I been a girl it would have been Isabella Matthews. But my father got to choose and William it is, although it has been shortened to Wil for as long as I can remember. I adopted Stew, my middle name five years ago for work mainly. I was in China and my colleague’s pronunciation of my name drove me steadily mad. Once even I started saying WiiiiiiiiiiLiiiiiiiiiiiammm:) , I had to change it.
Wil is fine.

my parents didn't have a name picked out or anything as far as I know. after having me my mom met a boy in the hospital that was terminally ill. she said he was sweet and kind and precious with big blue eyes and imagined I'd grow up to be like that so she named me after him. well...the blue eyes stuck.

My name story is kindof funny.
I was suposed to be Elizabeth, my mom apparently always said she wanted to name her daughter Elizabeth, and my aunt even told me once, that she wanted to name her daughter Elizabeth, but my mom wouldnt let her [my mom is the older sister, that is probably why.]
But when I was concieved, my mom told my dad that if i was a boy he would have gotten to pick, but if I was a girl, she got to. My dad wanted [For girls names] Darlene (like from Rosanne. YUCK, I am NOT a Darlene) or Charlene or something like that. I am NEITHER of those names, and for a Boy he liked Cameron. [I would love to have that as my first name now, but oh well.]
My mom told me that she liked Christine for ever too. (I think she lied, and is just a closet Mac fan personally. :P) my Dads name is Christopher, so it really isnt that far feched., but I still think that she just randomly made it up.
So Hence my name is Christine Elizabeth.
Dont get me started on last names, mine has been changed...3 or 4 times already, and I'm not even 18 yet

My parents had several names picked out for me:
Omar Bradley (A 4 star US military general)
Elvis (Yuck!)
John Paul (After my Mom's favorite band, the Beatles)
But my parents disagreed on my naming, so somehow they came to a liking of the name Brian, supposedly after the actor Brian Keith. But they did not like the name Keith, so my mysterious middle name comes from the middle name of uncles on both side of my family.

Well my name is Carlos Gerardo, The story goes like this: my mother actually wanted to named Gerardo. And she was asking What goes with Gerardo? Then my aunt suggested Carlos, but Gerardo Carlos didn't sound good so they named mi Carlos Gerardo.
So at the end, though I was registered as Carlos Gerardo, everybody called me just Carlos, and never used Gerardo.
Don't remember the girl name my mother wanted if she ever had a baby girl, but I know she mentioned long ago..

I was named after my grandma, can't you tell it's so old fashioned. My brother was named after my grandfather Wesley but doesn't like it so he calls himself by his second name Thomas. I guess I might have been named after the other one so I would have been Timothy. It would be weird having Tom and Tim. But our last name is so ridiculous that everything sounds stupid in front of it.

I was almost Jason or Joshua. The J name was in memory of my father's father, who was Jack (nicknamed Jake). My middle name is in memory of my mother's father's father. My mother's mother had a fit (to put it mildly) when she heard that my 1st name was from my father's family rather than my mother's family.
I was going to be Judith if I were a girl.

I am one of 8 kids. Numbers 3 + 4 were identical twin girls. One got sick with rheumatic fever and was dying. She and my mom were in the hospital at the same time.
They told her she got to name the baby. When she came out of surgery, they asked her what the baby's name was. She was groggy and said the first thing that came to her mind..."Betsy"
The next day, she changed her mind. She wanted "Janet Twinkle."
My folks went with her first choice.

Great thread!! I'm named after my Grandfather.. His name was "Aaron".. so, why couldn't I be called "Erin".. but noooo... way back in the stone ages when I was born, that name was non existant as a female name- so it was either Abigail or Arlene..And way back when, my Mother loved Arlene Frances, and Arlene Dahl.. I guess I'm glad they chose that one instead of Abigail, as I just can't see me an Abby or Abigail..

Great stories, people! Jaz - yours is so touching, I love it. And I lol'd at Betsy/Twinkle.
Another thing - my parents never gave us middle names. If you ask why, their reason is "we just didn't." They both have middle names, so does everyone else in our fam. Oh well, at least I didn't get stuck with some horrid embarassing one. Also, if it had started with an E my initials would have been PEZ. I made my maiden name my middle name when I got married - it's so unique I didn't want to lose it.

I forgot about that. Weird. I forgot what your maiden name was, but I remember thinking it was cool.
I don't know why I was named Amber, but I have five middle names, all but one are my mom's relatives. The other one is her best friend. She left out her brother, haha. His name is Paul. It wouldn't fit nice with all the girl names. :p
Hmm, I know one reason was no nickname possible for Amber, but I can't remember hearing any other reasons.

Anita.
Yuck! I don't like it, but it is a tad different. The thing is, I'll be in a supermarket, and hear over the loud speaker "I NEED A checker on isle ____."
I hear the I NEED A and think someone is calling my name. lame but oh so true.
Could be worse. As I have mentioned in other threads, so help my gawd, I knew a "Gang Ba(e?)ng." Sweet girl in junior high. Surely in Laos that name was no problem. People w/ the cutsie names, like an old friend of my moms, Candy Valentine...ugh! Sickly sweet. Chrissy Snow...a for real one. All of a sudden Anita is ok. It's just bland, and I think there is no charachter to it, so I work extra hard to make it memorable  I just hate that I get Anna all the time. Hello, Anita is 5 letters...NOT that hard.
Have a cousin that I was supposedly named after. Dad also knew a hot red-head name Anita, so how both came to the conclusion, well.......
Was supposed to have been named Erin (girl) or Aaron if I had been a boy. Not so sure I'd have liked that anymore. I like exotic names. Sahara, Anastacia, Isabo etc. Although I don't think I'd ever change my name I always right prose about a "December." Just has a far away sound to it.

My parents considered several names (Julie, Ginger, Shelley, etc) but eventually wanted to go with a "Kris" name and liked Krista the best. I personally have never liked my name. Not so much the name itself, but the fact it's mispronounced so much -- I get Kristy, Kristin, Krystal, Kristine, Kristina. My middle name, Marie, is after my mother (Mary.)

But...I never liked the name Rachel before. I only met one, ever, (I think it's a common jewish name, I never met any jewish people either) she was this bitchy girl in gymnastics when I was 7. I also like lots o' vowels in a name, I like them to flow prettily~*~ like a crystal dream~*~into the sea~*~melting on the water's flow~*~

Ooh...cool thread! My mom always loved the name Patrick, but hated Pat as a nickname, so if I'd been a boy I would've been Matthew Christopher. Oddly enough, that's now the name of one of my cousins, and we actually don't speak to his mom, so they couldn't have like...conferred or anything. Her second choice was James Patrick, apparently.
Girl-wise, I think I was about to be Skye Hope. LOL...not quite Morning Star, but still very.....very daughter-of-a-flower-child-esque. ;) Although I do sort of like Skye, just not in combination with my middle name. Then she heard Brianna somewhere, loved it, but decided to misspell it so it wouldn't be confused with 'Brian'...so I am now Breanna Hope. Which doesn't get confused with Brian, but gets pronounced "Breenna", "Brayna", or "Brenna". I can't win! Incidentally, if I'd had a sister, she would've been Haley Alexandra.....which is the name of another of my cousins, actually the aforementioned Matthew Christopher's sister. Weeeiiiiiirrrrddd...!

Pip is usually the nickname for Philip and Pipa the nickname for Phillipa. I was always called Pipa as a little girl and then that progressed to Pip (along with the stupid nicknames like Pip Squeak, Apple Pip and Pippi Longstocking )
I was only ever called Phillipa when I was in trouble. :p

I got the name Gretchen because in some Audrey Hepburn movie she had a lovely and elegant friend named Gretchen and my Mom loved the name. Also my parents had other names they were thinking of, like Lauren, Claire and Emma. I love those names! If I was to be a boy, my name would have been Graham (Graeme), Gordon or Hugh. It's funny, people think I'm German, but I'm mostly Welsh, English & Scottish with some Dutch. My sister's name is Ellen and my Mom calls her Ella.
