I'm kind of new here so there might be a thread about this already but I was wondering what are your other favourite bands or artists other than Fleetwood Mac or Stevie etc. Most of the other music I like is different from Fleetwood Mac so I don't really know anyone else who also likes them and was wondering if anyone else here likes other bands like I do. So what are your other favourites?

Yeah, we've done this a few times. Most recently here (http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=33627).Thanks :) Interesting, I was having a read of that and one person mentioned a couple bands I like but the rest was all completely different to what I like. Oh well it doesn't matter, was just curious to see if I wasn't alone.

The Rolling Stones (like the ScreenName RubyTuesday :))Thanks. I like that song too but probably because it's my name. The Stones aren't really my kind of style but I don't mind a few of their earlier ones though.

There are some pretty eclectic tastes around here, for sure.

I like A LOT of bands...but the only two that are right up there (for me) with Fleetwood Mac are Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and U2.

I couldnt possibly understand how steely dan could be on someone's list of "favorite bands"...? But then again, a lot of people say the same thing about Fleetwood mac. I could be wrong, but for me, favorites have to have great records and put on great live shows.

That was elitist. I'm sure there are plenty of people who think Steely Dan records are great. hell, there are people who think stevie nicks records and shows are great. bwaaaahahahaha.

Yeah. Sorry. I'm a music dork. I used to work in a record store like in "High Fidelity"...I was the Jack Black character.
Anyway...ok I take that back. What I shouldve said is that I couldnt possibly fathom someone liking Steely Dan that much because...I dont think the records are that great...and the live stuff is less than favorable. But thats my opinion, as is Steely Dan being someone's favorite band. Neither does Steely Dan's music move me in even the most general way. I'm affected by Fleetwood Mac, U2, Tom Petty...etc. Steely Dan is like radio/elevator filler. And again, more people than not think the same thing about Fleetwood Mac.

For the longest time, the only things I knew about them were "Reelin' in the Years" and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," and never cared for either of those songs at all. Then I heard the Aja and Gaucho albums - both of them are now in my top 10 - up there with Rumours & Tusk, for sure.

Agreed, I've posted here before that Steely Dan are my favourite band, just ahead of Fleetwood Mac. Yeah Reelin', Do it again, Rikki are pretty throw away songs - and were intended as such, but their latter albums are sublime. I love the jazz vibe in their work and their musicianship is beyond most other artists. Crap in concert (I think that was what Brandon meant by less than favourable) - well I'd suggest he's never seen Fagen and Becker in concert cos they are anything but crap. The song arrangements are always different to their albums and vary from night to night as does the set list.
It wouldn't do for us all to like the same thing, but don't piss on a band til you've properly listened to what they have got to say!

I havent seen them in concert. I never said that. I've seen them live on VH1 several times...and I remember seeing Two against nature (was it?)...not blown away, impressed, or moved by the music. That's all I said.

I guess the last part all depends on how much of a fan you are cause some people thought that Fleetwood Mac were kind of boring in concert a few years ago. Plus theres bands like The Beatles who didn't even put on live shows of their most popular stuff and there live shows were said to be terrible because they weren't even bothering to play properly cause it was just all screaming.

I love the jazz vibe in their work and their musicianship is beyond most other artists. For many years, I've had the Best of Steely Dan Transcribed Scores folio, published by Hal Leonard. I bought it to have Fagen's marvelously sinewy & understated Fender Rhodes lines notated on staff. I wish it had more material from Gaucho, especially Babylon Sisters & Gaucho, but at least it has Hey Nineteen, which is the best melding of funk & light jazz probably ever recorded (you'd have to go to mid '70s Miles Davis albums to find the equivalent, & those probably influenced Steely Dan).
I relied on the transcribed Peg when a band I was in in Northern California played at the state fair one year. We did Peg because it's one of the funnest songs to play. The drummer & bassist love it usually & the keyboardist has a very fun part. The only one who grumbles is the lead guitarist -- it's tricky for him.
In 1990, Christine McVie said that Gaucho was her favorite pop album.

Since this thread has turned into Steely dan,
i´ll put in my two cents worth
First Steely dan record i bought was Gaucho
I hated it,Awful, bland, soulless, there was only studio perfection,no substance.
I never would´ve bought more ´less Do it again would´ve been played on the radio.Eventually i bought Can´t buy a thrill.
A good record, but not among the greats for me.
Countdown to ecstasy is one of my recent purchases,
now i feel i´m getting into them.
One of those cases, you just need to give them time,i guess.

Recently I've been really digging The Gasoline Age by East River Pipe. East River Pipe is one guy named F.M. Cornog and he records all of his music in his apartment on an 8-track tape recorder, using a cheap guitar/pedals, cheap synth and a drum machine.....but you would never know it because his music is so atmospheric and kinda Beach Boys sounding.

They were. And thats cause, without Christine, Fleetwood Mac isn't all that great. They need her in the mix to make that magic. Just my opinion....

I was really pleased to see this post – someone who understands:).
You have to be a bit careful with the Fender sound on the later Steely Dan albums. They are beautifully played but by Aja and Gaucho it is mainly Larry Carlton playing with Lee Ritenour playing the Gibson that people usually associate with Carlton. I also agree with you about the influences. In 1975, the band got hold of probably the three best jazz session musicians in the US; Larry Carlton, Phil Woods and Bernard Purdie. Most people are familiar with Carlton through his work with Joni Mitchell but he played with all the top jazz artists. His jazz guitar that drives Kid Charlemagne continues to amaze me. The way it keeps looping back and then subtly changing is really clever. Phil Woods is probably best known for the saxophone he played on Billy Joel’s ‘Just the way you are’, but jazz fans enthuse about his playing with Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich and Quincy Jones. Bernard Purdie is a drummer with a unique ‘shuffle’ sound. He was the link to Miles Davis, playing on his 70s albums but he also played with Gillespie and Aretha Frankin for years. I love his drumming on ‘The Royal Scam’. You can catch the shuffle sound just before the chorus starts.
But those three musicians really shaped the later jazz sound of Steely Dan. Of course the link between them and Fagen was a love of Charlie Parker. The third song on Gaucho – Glamour Profession started out as a Charlie Parker jam session. But from the opening 30 seconds of Babylon Sisters, so so cool, the whole Gaucho album is magnificent. Enough – it is a Fleetwood Mac site after all………….
Thanks for the post

High-five on that one! I'm with you there! Christine provides the special harmonies that tie the group's vocals together- IMO. They just didn't sound the same without her on the SYW tour to me.

Who are they?
Guided By Voices, a legendary indie rock band from Dayton, OH, that was led by Robert Pollard, who split the band up in 2003. Pollard and his ever chaging band started out releasing albums on their own in 1987. Their last album was going to be 1992's Propeller. They had 500 copies pressed, and put a unique cover on each copy. Some of the copies landed in the hands of music writers in New York, and the band (all in their 30s, working real jobs) was invited to play CBGBs, where they pretty much stole the show.
Their first "landmark" album was 1994's lo-fi masterpiece Bee Thousand, noted for being recorded primarily on a 4-track cassette recorder (and, sometimes, even a boombox). Their next landmark album, Alien Lanes, was recorded in much the same fashion. However, the band signed on to a larger label, Matador, and got a $100K signing bonus. They spent maybe $10 -tape and beer- recording the record.
The band would continue recording and touring with a revolving door of personnel, and Pollard would release a lot of side projects on his own Fading Captain Series label, and has been on over one hundred releases to date.
GBV is also noted for their wild, high-energy shows, where the band would consume large amounts of alcohol during their shows, and Pollard would trash talk other bands.
A good starting point for GBV is their best of Human Amusements At Hourly Rates. Propeller, Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, Isolation Drills, and (especially) Half Smiles Of The Decomposed are perhaps their best studio albums.

Christine was the one who tied Mick and John to Stevie and Lindsey. She was the critical link in the chain.
