But, alas, all things age, & all peoples wrinkle & sag. Even the Ledge, which started as a swift, speedy Matt Wright script, is groaning under its great weight, plodding across the Information Superhighway like a brontosaurus mired in the Swamp of Instability & Extreme Load Times.

Hey Mark aka Vivfox...

Who is the female in stripes on the Mustang?

When I saw this picture it reminded me of the Stevie photoshoot so I decided to 1.play a joke and 2. make it an even four pictures as I did in the last three threads I put together from that photo session. So far, out of like 200 people, you're the only one who noticed. And thank you Betsy for all your kind thank you's. BTW are you a mod now?

Here's a little ditty I found on the web. An interview with some musician.

AT: I'd like for you to explain to me how you compose music based on samples. Where do you get the samples, how do you create them, what kind of samples you are looking for, and what sample-based music is all about.

JG: Well the whole idea of taking samples and decontextualizing them for me is based on the incredible excitement of being able to pick bits of music or sound that you like and manipulating them to make something new. I can remember when I first discovered the world of sampling and all of its possibilities. It was just as exciting to me as when it became possible to do home recording with a cassette 4-track.

It was this realization that all of the sounds that mean something to me or trigger an emotional or physical response can be taken and pulled apart or repeated or effected. It’s like being able to listen to your favorite 5 seconds of a song over and over and then adding other sounds or bits of other songs and creating a whole new piece of music. One of the first pieces I did was just using the album Tusk by Fleetwood Mac as source material. I love the production sound of the songs by Lindsey Buckingham. I had sampled a little intro from one of the songs into the keyboard and looped it and when I changed the loop length to 0 it made this strange rhythm that seemed to have a life of its own. It was one of those happy accidents. I loved that loop and used it all the time.

I started sampling more parts of that record and just experimented with effects and stuff and then loaded them up into the drum pads and by a ton of trial and error came up with an ‘instrument’ that I could play. A lot of the samples were unrecognizable from the source but something about the sound quality of that record still came through. In terms of what kind of samples I’m looking for, I guess initially I was sampling parts of old records that I liked, Kraftwerk or PiL and then just playing around with them until I found a loop or rhythm I liked. Now, I am working from specific ideas that I have, giving myself more of a framework.

Those shots you're talking about all ran in Hit Parader back in 1980 or so. It was a sort of profile of the band in Japan. There was another shot of Stewart Copeland sitting at a table with Christine, her arm in a cast.

I don't think Stevie cared much for the length of the Tusk tour. She's made several references over the years to the grueling pace and duration of the tour. Wasn't this when she began developing problmes w her voice? I also believe this was the time the bands drug use started to become hardcore.

Hence Stevie's "IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT?" that can be heard on live Rhiannon's from that part of the tour.

Brilliant deduction David. Now I understand my fascination with my top favorite Rhiannon's of all time. IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT? Everytime she sings that line I get very excited and my adrenaline starts pumping. It always makes me feel like a teenager again. Also don't forget the incredible magic of Lindsey's guitar playing and Christines witchy piano playing and the spooky sounding bass that John is playing trying to keep in time with all the singers and Mick who is pounding away on his drums.

Om my God, a thousand, million thank you's to you for inquiring abot this song from this show. I was sitting here reading what you wrote and it dawned on me that I don't have FM live in Sendai, Japan! I go back and read my thread and sure enough there it was in black and white, my review for a show on 2-14-80. So I went to my Tusk Tour cassettes and started investigating. At some point around 12 years ago I mis-wrote the date on the cassette as 2-14 when it should have been 2-4.
Now I don't know if you'll follow me here but not only had I written 2-14-80 but I also wrote Tokyo right next to the date. The actual tape is 2-4-80 Tokyo part two and I had it listed as 2-14-80 Tokyo.
Next, when I was posting for Sendai, Japan in my head I remembered I had a cassette with the date of Valentines day on it and therefore I made my mistake in posting I had a review for a show in Sendai, Japan when I don't!
I have since re-entered my old threads and fixed them.

Lindsey sings part of Never Going Back Again acapella. He and Stevie are very much into the song Angel. Lindsey sings I'm So Afraid slightly different than his usual way.

Wow, I'm glad I could be of some help to you. Heh heh. Don't suppose anyone has a good recording of Angel and Sara from this show. :)

I'm also obsessed with Sara from the Tusk tour. Even if I don't download entire shows I'll always grab the Sara. I love how Stevie often did different ad libs at the end. That song always makes me cry and in each version there's usually something that gets me. I was saddened when she did it solo on the Beladonna tour because she seemed to leave the ad libbing out. Plus, I was thrilled when someone posted a partial recording of her doing it recently and she added the "wind became crazy" part back in after all these years. I wish there was a really clear recording of that. The band does such an amazing job of the music in it too.

When Fleetwood Mac played in Los Angeles last December they were scheduled for five nights at The Forum. They played three nights in a row, then tossed in a performance in San Diego, and then headed back the next week to perform the other two shows. They have five shows scheduled at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney. The fIrst two were at the end of February, and two weeks later they'll return to do the other three. They just played three shows in Melbourne and then they'll come back next week to do the other two after the Brisbane shows.

This is Fleetwood Mac's last show in Australia for the Tusk Tour. I have a cassette from this show. Right now I can only locate the tape with the second half of the show.
My review: Lindsey is very frisky. He swears during the intro to What Makes You Think You're The One. Not That Funny is way too long at this show. The entire group plays and sings Angel extremely well. Tonights version of World Turning is incredible! The best live version of this song ever(for me).During Go Your Own Way Lindsey swears again and performs the song way too long. Christine makes a nice dedication before performing Songbird.

I believe this was the place Mick wrote about in his book where Lindsey was kicking at Stevie while she was performing Rhiannon and purposely screwed up several of his guitar parts throughout the whole show all the while being broadcast live on the radio for the rest of the people not attending the show.
And of course the tapes from this show have never surfaced.
Backstage Lindsey was scolded by Christine. This is the "fly on the wall" performance.

At what point, did he send Carol Harris back to the Old Country? She mentions in her book that he put her on a plane with no explanation and sent her packing.

According to CAH's book (as I recall), it was in Australia after they flew from one location to the next stop (both in Australia). Lindsey had come across her "girlfriend tapes" (using his new, "high-tech" Sony Walkman) during the flight between Australian cities (Brisbane and Sidney perhaps?). He flew into a rage, at the hotel room she cried -- "wondering what she had done" -- she vomited, cried some more, he said something to the effect of "don't you dare try to make me feel sorry for you!", he put her on a plane back to LA. A few days later she got a call from Sara in NZ who told her of the debacle where he kicked Stevie on stage.

The End.

On a lighter note, that dress is GORGEOUS. I adore the way she dressed during the "Tusk" tour days. Beautiful stuff.

Please explain this reference...does it have a special meaning? Is this in regards to Christine slapping him, throwing a drink in his face, and saying "You never treat an audience like that..."

Fleetwood toured extensively in 94, too!!

Stevie's tour in '94 was the same year her album was released, so that doesn't count.

According to CAH's book (as I recall), it was in Australia after they flew from one location to the next stop (both in Australia). Lindsey had come across her "girlfriend tapes" (using his new, "high-tech" Sony Walkman)

I couldn't help but wonder, what are "girlfriend tapes" ?

You would have to have read Carol Harris's book to understand the "girlfriend tape" reference. My memory isn't as good as it once was, and I read the book last summer. Maybe another Ledgie can correct me if I stray from the plot...

AT some point Carol Ann became good friends with Mick's future wife (Sara Recor - who was also Stevie's best friend.)

Anyhow, for the hell of it, they got out a cassette tape recorder and would record their conversations...about some stuff....girl talk stuff. I don't recall exactly what was said, but Lindsey was looking for a blank tape, so he grabbed one out of Carol's bag. He put the ear phones on, and then became enraged and took it out on her. She didn't know why. She listened to the tape and it was one of her "girlfriend" tapes...but I *think* she made a comment about John Courage being good looking or something -- therefore the conversation threw Lindsey into a rage....and I can't remember if he hit her or grabbed her by the hair...there were so many references which blended together.

In another thread, there were photos posted of the TUSK tour (?) in Japan...one shows Lindsey (back in the day) using a Sony Discman/Walkman because it was the *new* technology.

If anyone wants to come in and correct me ~ please feel free to do so. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

I'm not sure about the other members of Fleetwood Mac but in April 1980 Stevie did not lay around for a month resting. Instead she hung out with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers in a recording studio. I present you now with some of those results:

Gypsy--4-3-80--take #6--Good Vocals

Outside The Rain--4-4-80--session #2--New lyrics in latter half of song to enjoy--

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd169/cielosharon/13754961.jpg

Sanctuary--4-4-80--the signature Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers sound--nice vocals near the end when she sings Just How Far several times--

Starshine Silver--4-4-80--session #2--At the end Stevie is excited when she sees Debbie dancing--Stevie is whispering to someone at the end; in one of those hushed tones she says,"you're not daddy."--

Since I like pretending this thread is in real time just try to imagine if this really was April 13, 1980. Then these songs were recorded about two weeks ago! Imagine(I know you can).

Dear vivfox & David--- I was thrilled beyond words to attend the Uni-Dome show on Dec.1,1979. I live in Cedar Falls' sister city, Waterloo. A fantastic show, even with Stevie's throat problems. Did she have surgery on it in 1980? I understand the fans' sensitivity regarding who performs "Songbird" (Sheryl?). Christine's first class performance at the Dome was the perfect closer to a magic night. Thanks for bringing back some great memories! Sincerely, Madelow.

Well this is the story I've been waiting to tell for awhile now. I can remember these 2 days, May 9&10 1980 like they were yesterday. First, a bit of a back story. I had first heard Fleetwood Mac in the summer of 1977 right around the 4th of July at the age of 6. Gold Dust woman came on the radio, and I made a very deep spiritual connection to this music immidieately. My mother bought Rumours for me for Christmas in 1977, and I wore it out listening to it in less than 6 months. Then when Tusk came out I was even more excited because it was 2 records instead of one. I remember listening to that just like Rumours and pretty much wearing it out in a short period of time. So anyway, April of 1980 rolls around, and I read a full page ad for the Met Center shows in the Minneapolis Tribune and I right away rudh to my mother shrieking about how my favorite band is coming to town. Mind you I'm a 9 year old boy at this time. My mother would not allow me to go to these concerts. She's no prude by any stretch, but knowing some of the stuff that went on at concerts back in those days, she wasnt going to let her young son be exposed to that. I begged and pleaded with her for 4 weeks to let me go but she wouldnt budge. So when Friday May 9, 1980 rolled around, I pretty much barricaded myself in my room, drew the shades, and did nothing for 2 days but listen to my Fleetwood Mac records in protest of my mothers refusal to let me go. Finally on Sunday morning, I rejoined the living and came out of my room. I wasnt even hungry to eat I was so upset. I still didnt speak to mom for 3 days after that because I was so upset. Years later, this is something my mother would point to when she would try to understand the intense passion I have for their music. I know now she meant well, but damn I still to this day wish I couldve gone! That's pretty much it. I feel very fortunate becasue I've made up for not having been able to go to those shows back then by being able to have the experiences I've had the last 11 years, so it all worked out in the end, I just had to wait 20 years. Good things come to those who wait, right?:)

So, even as a kid, when you first heard Tusk you immediately liked it? I remember getting it after hearing Sara on the radio and being disappointed in the album as a whole. It took me awhile to warm up to it. Michele

That's how I felt when I got the album. I cut school the day it was released, just to go get that record and went immediately to a friends house to listen to it (his parents were at work). Not all of my friends were smitten with it the way I was. I loved it because there was so much music in so many different styles. And I loved Stevie's new hairstyle.

I also got to go to both Madison Square Garden shows in November 1979 and we had great seats because my friends father was "connected". We were in the 5th row for both nights. The only reason my parents let me go (I was 16) is because my friends older brother was going. Little do they know that we smoked so much weed that night:lol: All that weed and all these years later I can still see Stevie up there, working the crowd. Squatting, stomping, screaming, singing Landslide:thumbsup: Great memories!

I was at this show....28 years ago today! I was 13 years old and was there with my best friend, my sister and my brother-in-law. And...it was my first concert ever. The Rosemont Horizon had only recently opened as the roof had collapsed a year or so prior. As a joke, many people in the audience were wearing hard hats!

I was completely overwhelmed by this concert. I was FINALLY seeing the band that I loved live and "in person." Seeing Stevie perform her amazing version of Rhiannon was like having a religious experience. And I cleary remember the pulse of John's bass during The Chain. It was like a living thing.

I cried when they left the stage. It was magnificent!

aka Cleveland
Venue: Richfield Coliseum

These two Cleveland shows were filmed by the ABC TV Show 20/20 and it aired on American television later in the year. This segment I have provided shows Stevie playing Sister's Of The Moon on piano. In 1980 when I saw this on TV I was so impressed with the way she played piano that it totally inspired me to learn how to play. To this day the very first song I play when I sit down in front of any piano is SOTM.

I remember catching this 20/20 episode when it first aired. I was a Rabid Mac fan at the time and hung on every word. To me, this is still one of the best Mac docs (I'm still looking for a clean version if anyone has one). Stevie struck me as so ethereal and vulnerable, I related to her immediately.

Debbie, I remember on that other board you asked me to make you a copy of this show in Holland. Well last night I dreamt that there was a bouquet of flowers waiting for me when I got home. They were from Stevie with a note asking me to find the best copy I can get a hold of, of this show, and record it for, and then send it to her.

So, even as a kid, when you first heard Tusk you immediately liked it? I remember getting it after hearing Sara on the radio and being disappointed in the album as a whole. It took me awhile to warm up to it. Michele

Yes, absolutely!:) Ina different way than Rumours. I dont know how I was able to do that at 9, but I guess I had an appreciation for the difference between it and Rumours.

I loved "Tusk" the very first time I heard it too. Although I had heard it for the first time in 2004/2005, I was only familiar with "Rumours." And most people I knew that heard of the band mostly liked "Rumours" and the White Album. I could remember listening to it and loving every single thing I heard. I was amazed by it and thought I was alone in thinking that "Tusk" was better than "Rumours." Wasn't until I met more hardcore FM fans that I realized I wasn't. I will always adore "Rumours" but "Tusk" will always be my favorite.

I'd like to think that I would have enjoyed Tusk more immediately when I first heard it, if I'd had more musical experience at the time. It had to grow on me. Michele

That era may have played a huge part as well. Back then most people thought it was a weird sound, so it was harder to accept right away. You didn't hear a lot of it on mainstream radio. I can certainly see how someone wouldn't like it at first after coming off "Rumours." I still can't fully explain why I liked it as much as I did.

Gail

This is a valid point which has been asked of me more than once in this thread. Gail, as a long time fan like you and me have been, I know you are aware that most photographers who go to FM shows or Stevie shows and the majority of the pics they take are/were/will be of Stevie Nicks. I know you are a huge fan of Christine's and that is teriffic but the one issue I have with the rest of FM is without Stevie in the photo I usually wouldn't be able to tell you what tour a photo is from. Other than with a bearded Lindsey it would be hard to determine what year he was in as well.
I think most people want to see pics of Stevie more than any other member. Yes The Ledge Boards are about Fleetwood Mac 1967-present, but the majority of photos representing the group will be of her.
I/we would gladly welcome any Tusk photos of Christine you would like to share. Next week when I cover the England shows please feel free to post all the photos you took of Chris, John, Mick and Lindsey when you saw them at Wembley.

I don't object to photos of Stevie and I don't doubt that most people want to see pictures of Stevie but surely we can have a bit of balance here.

I would love to share any photos I had but Wembley was strictly no cameras - and yes my bag was searched.

I was going to say something about this thread (like why not rename it and stick it in the Stevie section), but I guess I haven't posted any pictures to have any validity there. Either way, Lindsey was way hotter- and more interesting- during this period for me. But, yes, I am in the minority. Continue with the "Stevie Nicks Tusk Tour" pictorial chronology. Her dresses are cute.

Aesthetically, Wembley Arena is closer to the L.A. Sports Arena than the Forum, but its a legendary concert venue nonetheless. A better comparison is the Budokan in Tokyo (another classic concert venue)

I'm glad Lindsey lost the red jacket pictured above.Actually, he "lost" it before the Tusk tour even started. That pic is a '78 pic.

These photos were all terrific Sanne! However these two really are a standout for me. Now the first one is kinda funny to me because she looks chubby at that angle and tired too. If I didn't know it was a Tusk photo I might have thought it was taken during Street Angel.
She also makes me want to have a glass of (milk)?

I know we are up to Wembly, but here's something i clipped out of the paper years ago. It was also my first ever rock concert. ( I was 15) :)

Would like to say a big thank you. I went to one of the Tusk shows at Wembley Arena - I was around 16 years old and it was fantastic, but I don't remember Stevie looking like that, but it was a long time ago! I should imagine after doing such a long tour Stevie was probably very tired - living the life style they all lived back then. Thanks for the photos they are fantastic.

I have this same newspaper clipping but from the New York Times and my version says in the top right corner, "only 2 New York City Performances!" Just like that with an exclamation mark at the end.

How could you possibly remember that?

Because it was my very first Mac concert. He wore a dark blue Fruit of the Loom t-shirt and very tight jeans.

This thread brings back so many memories for so many people. I can't believe it is 28 years ago today - my first Mac concert,I was only 16 and the first big concert I had ever been to. Little did I know that FWM would be a part of the rest of my life. I remember going up to London for the day and it all seemed to big, and there was a massive anti nuclear demonstration going on in Oxford Street, it was so amazing. Then we went to Carnaby Street that was still quite hippyish. Then to Wembley, I don't remember if there was a support act and I can't find the tickets. Our seats were about 3/4 way down and we had a pretty good view. I was mesmorized throughout. Strangely enough I don't remember much about Lindsey - Christine and Stevie stayed in my memories (strange because at Say You Will it was def. Lindsey who made the concert special). My favourite song from the Mac at that time was Angel. The whole concert was brilliant and then at the end (worrying about getting the last train home) just walking out and Christine came on in the darkness and did Songbird - it was just fantastic. I feel very excited about i just thinking about it. Is there anyone else on here that went to that concert?:]

Anyway, thanks for the Thread and for all the memories.

I was at that concert but my memories of it are a bit vague. I remember the roadies moving the piano into place that Christine used for Not that Funny and Sarah and her giving them the "OK" sign when they got in the right place whilst taking a drink of something (champagne?)

I also remember there being a girl right at the front dressed as Stevie, complete with chiffon and Top Hat, and Stevie coming back onto the stage after the concert finished to let the girl choose which one of her (many) scarves she wanted.

I still have the ticket and I've attached a scan (if anyone's interested). I've still got the programme as well.

I guess he preferred the white shirt over the black one:Although that shirt had a CAMP BEVERLY HILLS logo instead of a FRUIT OF THE LOOM one. These are all from the Bowl, you probably already know.

I never noticed in this pic that you can see Stevie in top hat just behind him -- the song must be GYOW with Ray:

As with the SYW tour. I saw him in Illinois in a black shirt and then -- NGBA.

I would say he might get hotter in black, but for UTS, he stayed in black and had on a leather jacket for half the show.
