to the penguin:
wouldn't it be helpful to everyone here if you enumerated the new changes to the FAQ in your announcement instead of just telling us to look there for the new rules? the changes are not clear, especially considering the "three strikes" section is still intact.

I'm not sure that it would be helpful. I think everyone should read all of the rules in their entirety. They have not been updated since 2004. Given the time that has passed and the fact that many people probably have not read the rules more than once (if ever), I think it would be helpful if everyone had a refresher course on all of them, rather than just scanning for the "new" ones. The announcement is not intended to call attention to the changes, so much as it is meant to direct attention to the Rules and Guidelines, period.
Any modifications build upon the existing rules anyway. They are not to be read in a vacuum.

In an attempt to rectify any confusion, words have been added to the Three Strike section of the rules to indicate that, although it is the regular policy, it is not currently in effect. Of course, the announcement and the first and italicized sentence of the revised FAQ itself also stressed this fact.

i appreciate that you want everyone to read all of the FAQ, and i agree that everyone should. but if you thought the alterations were so important that you needed to add them to a document that hadn't been updated in 3 years, maybe you should bring those things specifically to our attention and then direct us to review the FAQ in its entirety.
also, i'm not sure what "conflict" you're referring to in the announcement since this place has been all but dead since the last banning.

I didn't think the alterations were any more important than what was already contained in the Rules and Guidelines. It was quite comprehensive as it was. I view the Rules and Guidelines, as revised, as an integrated document, to be read and followed as a whole.
