While listening to "You Do or You Don't" I recognized a part of "Bleed to Love Her" towards the end. Does anyone know the story on why he used that bit of music and lyric twice?

I don't know why; but those words must be very poingnant and he felt they belonged in Bleed.

That was one of the questions I asked him for the Q&A. Hopefully he'll answer it! :wavey:

Good question. I love it, just like I love the Illume / Destiny Rules repeat

Here comes the nightime
Lookin' for a little more
Waitin' on the right time
Somebody outside the door

What song is this? I Know I'm Not Wrong?? Not that funny?? BOTH!!
I think Lindsey likes to do this.. Does Stevie too?

I think Lindsey likes to do this.. Does Stevie too?Oh boy, yes. Like someone brought up: Illume/Destiny Rules. Then there's also Enchanted/Destiny and Whole Lotta Trouble/Thousand Days. Am I forgetting one?

And the days go by doing nothing about them appears on If You Ever Did Believe and Forest of the Black Roses.

In Stevie and Tom's So Sad Stevie used those words in her diary. When she had that diary entry back in 1977 and said "Lindsey and I are at an end. So sad to see good love go bad."

The strain of falling down and getting up in Loving Cup and Family Man

This isn't a repeated lyric, but it's my favorite continued lyric from Lindsey:

Don't Let Me Down Again:

There's just one thing I'd like you to know:
I've got no more to lose if you go

Second Hand News:

One thing I think you should know:
I ain't gonna miss you when you go

Going back to the song...You Do or You Don't...

AT the end of the song, he doesn't exactly humm....but sings notes. It took me a long time to figure out what tune that is...

Anyone old enough to remember "There's a Summer Place" ? I swear that's the tune he's singing.

Anyone care to comment?

You are right ! I've googled it and found this (you can listen to a clip of the Percy Faith recording) :

I've been breaking my brains over this for years now as it seemed so familiar. Something from my childhood days, but i just could not figure out what.
Thank you !!:xoxo:

Anyone care to comment? That's what he's humming, all right. "A Summer Place" theme from the movie with Troy Donahue. The music was written by Max Steiner. A popular slice of Americana 1950s Hit Parade, which was a major part of Lindsey's formative musical experience. Aside from the theme itself, the song lyrics probably appeal to him -- innocence lost & regained.

He does that sort of thing a lot, not always on the lyrical level though. Stephanie and Eyes Of the World have the same guitar riff. Part of I Want You's melody came from I Don't Want to Know. If I can think of any more I'll post them.

Also on OOTC , the end lines he sings on "Soul Drifter" always make me think of "The lion sleeps tonight". I 'm not sure exactly what he sings, but to me it sounds like "i am on my way" or "i am down the way" ?

Stephanie and Eyes Of the World have the same guitar riff.

Also, that same riff is done on a synthesiser in "Bang The Drum" (only slowed way down) off of Go Insane.

Hey David that's an awesome picture in your signature, you wouldn't happen to have a larger version would you? It'd make a great desktop. Isn't it from the '78 AMA's where Carol Anne Harris described Lindsey getting trashed out of his mind....and the sombrero :o

I always thought that myself
At first I thought I was crazy thinking that.
Glad to see someone else does too!

Stevie also says "dream on silly dreamer" in the Nightmare piano demo. And she says, "I'd like to leave you with something warm" in both Nightmare and Storms.

Lindsey uses "faces of glass" in Loving Cup too. Faces of glass work well in DOR on several levels, because they have their noses pressed up against the shop windows on Rodeo Drive.

I like the difference between falling down and getting up in Loving Cup and Family Man, because in Loving Cup it's like the couple is falling and getting up together, working out their problems, instead of giving up on each other. In Family Man, he's more solitary, which is ironic, given the song title.

And he also flies down Juniper more than once.

When he was recording Soundstage, Lindsey used the same solo for Murrow that he does at the end of ISA and he commented, "I'm stealing from myself."

I listened to both songs back to back, and I still couldnt notice that.

plus if LB did use some of IDWK, couldn't SN have sued him???

He also uses "faces of glass" in 'On the Wrong Side'. "Faces of liars and faces of glass/Oh, they walk by the window/But they never got passed." So it's used in a similar way to DOR.

Yeah it's from the AMAs. I think I just grabbed it off the Web, made the sig, & then trashed it. It wasn't very big to begin with, malheureusement.

plus if LB did use some of IDWK, couldn't SN have sued him???Seems unlikely that someone would sue someone over a I-IV-V chord progression, especially if that someone designed both tracks in question. Plus, I doubt Stevie has ever even heard I Want You. I myself don't hear the similarity between the two (other than the I-IV-V-IV on the chorus), but hey.

When he was recording Soundstage, Lindsey used the same solo for Morrow that he does at the end of ISA and he commented, "I'm stealing from myself." Not yours necessarily, michele, but some of these spot-the-similarities examples stretch. Virtually everyone who sings or plays does similar stuff from song to song. Christine used the same blues lick on Rhiannon onstage & on Save Me in the studio, & on dozens of other examples. That's just her style. It's not even necessarily a conscious thing. She didn't sit there thinking, "Now I'll throw in the Rhiannon blues lick." What you play, when you play it, & how you play it is what constitutes your style. It's different from consciously using an entire stanza in two or more songs, for example, in order to re-create a mood or emphasize an emotional core or some other deliberately aesthetic reason. And, as any study of Beethoven would show, there are a million different ways to slightly vary motives & larger themes, including inversion (or mirroring), augmentation, diminution, modality variation (major to minor or vice versa) & tempo variation. And lyrically, too, you can do dozens of things to reference previous work (some very astute people have called Stevie's entire body of work one big endlessly self-referential song).

Lindsey gives some of the same force & heft to the chorus of Book of Love that he put in Go Your Own Way by using essentially the same chord progression on the chorus of both, just employing augmentation techniques.

Every songwriter & every composer does this sort of thing. Even Thomas Dolby. ;)

Ya. Once on another board someone was speaking about how Lindsey had done a cover of Wild Mountain Thyme, but titled it D.W. Suite. All they have in common is slight similarity in the vocal melodies and the "we'll all go together" line, that's it.

Could just be my imagination, but listen to IDWK without the vocals and I think you may hear some similarities.

I found one more (at the risk of being way off topic!): walking in with Carol Ann Harris. I wonder if he's spotted Kenny yet.

Oh, Stevie probably listened to I Want You at least once, just to see what the lyrics were about, make sure there was no secret message to her there.

Christine used the same blues lick on Rhiannon onstage & on Save Me in the studio, & on dozens of other examples.

Like the Silver Springs intro.

For Soundstage, I just think Lindsey was improvising with Murrow on the spot, since that song was not in FM's setlist and he probably hadn't really fleshed out a live arrangement for it. Of some reused material Lindsey has said that he didn't necessarily have a theme in mind, but was just being "lazy."

Obviously, sometimes there was a theme. I definitely think the Tusk songs of his were meant to fit together, as components of one body.

Stevie has said that the Sara in Sara and Welcome to the Room are the same. She meant something there. I even think Lindsey meant something about his priorities growing outward instead of being self-involved by the song title "It Was You" as opposed to "It Was I." Although, I realize "It Was I" was just a cover.

Here's another one:

That is hilarious! Was that the night that he spewed on Dick Clark's carpet, and subsequently everywhere else afterward?

The Carol Anne pic with him is cute. He's really, really pale though. His hands are, like, chalk-white.

Yes, Nico, that was the night of the American Musical Award show in 1978. There are other pictures from that show on wireimage.com. Just type in "1978 Annual American Music Awards" and you can see others.

btw, I spoke out of turn. The Kenny Rogers incident was at the Grammy awards.

the music sounds different than on the Rumours version.

Do You have any more Rumours songs like that? Its really cool!!

As for the IDWK/IWY connection, I still cant hear it.

I bet Stevie has heard the whole GI album, at least once....
