View Full Version : Britney's MTV performance

everyone's talking about it, we may as well too. I was secretly hoping for an unbelievable comeback, but what we got was jiggly belly, wobbly dancing, bad pantomiming, a bad weave, a set of blue contacts, missing fake fingernails and lots of celebs making WTF faces.
can't Britney talk to Beyonce' and find out where she gets her weave? or at least talk to Tyra? couldn't Britney have worn a one-piece something? that would have made a world of difference. where was Criss Angel? one positive thing I can say is that her face looked great.
there are so many rumours floating to excuse the bad performance...Sarah Silverman was too mean in rehearsals and it upset Britney, Britney's shoe was broken, the Palms nixxed the magic stunt at the last second...blah blah blah. I don't buy any of that.

i was so glad i taped this, my son & i died watching britney this morning~ she was a mess~ i loved how perez hilton said we love her beer belly~ i have never been a britney fan at all, & this goes to show she is talentless~ she looked all drugged up or drunk~ & boo hoo if sarah hurt her feelings, i thought the **** she was saying was hilarious~ & if britney doesn't want people making fun of her...uhm well...be a better parent, it's pretty bad when her actions of late, make kfed look like the better parent~

it was really terrible...i can't decide if she was paralyzed with stage fright, or if she just really sucked. she was staggering around like she was drunk, tho.

That whole show sucked ass...I can't believe I watched the whole thing!
Out of all the mediocre performances, Britney's was the worst. Her "comeback" was worth a shot, but I think it's time to throw in the cheeto stained towel.

I know. I felt like I was watching a bad episode of Wild N Out. it wasn't structured well, I couldn't tell what was an actual performance and I think I only saw 2 awards given out. I did like Justin Timberlake telling MTV to play more videos...twice! "we don't need more reality shows" - right in front of The Hills girls. I laughed my ass off.

He was absolutely right. How much sense does it make to have a two hour awards show when MTV only plays an hour's worth of videos every day?

The thing is, she doesn't even look that bad, it's just her choice of (or well, lack of) clothing that's really questionable.
If people consider that a beer belly, I have my work cut out for me.

no, she doesn't. I'd probably be happy to have her body as it is now, but when this is your supposed comeback and you are known for having a ripped body, you can't show up after dieting for a couple months after having 2 kids and eating, smoking and drinking like she has for the past couple of years and expect people not to expect to see that body or something similar. I guess what I'm saying is, if she couldn't get her "old" body back or couldn't since her body has changed, like you say, she should have worn something more flattering and that didn't show her gut hanging over.

Omigod, this is BRUTAL. It's punishing to watch. I can't stand Britney but I hate seeing her such a mess, honestly. The bra top doesn't even fit. She keeps stumbling and is barely putting any effort into her dancing. Love the look on Fitty's face. She looks like the drunk girl at the party who stripped and started lip synching to Britney. Damn girl, go back to rehab.
I don't see the beer belly, she was just lazy about flexing it but it certainly is not a large belly. We just have impossible standards for celebs man.

My God, what a train wreck!
I don't think she was in the same shape as she has been in the past, but I didn't think she looked "fat".
Even with her trainwreck of a life as of late, I thought that she could at least make an effort to pull this off. How wrong I was! She looked like she could puke at any second from nerves, and she also seemed unfamiliar with any of the dance steps as if she was doing it for only the second or third time.
Where was the Chris Angel magic anyway????
The audience looked horrified. The jokes were funny about her, but I didn't really think the ones about her kids were appropriate. JMO.

but Britney herself has admitted to doing thousands of crunches in the past to maintain her stomach. she used to be known for having one of the best mid-sections. so, that part's not impossible. and no, it's not a large belly by any means. but like I was saying, when you're used to seeing such a great set of abs, you don't expect to see her come out in a 2 piece knowing full well her stomach isn't in the best shape...cover it up for now until you can work on it. if she had covered up a little more, the issue of her belly wouldn't even be an issue. I do agree that we put a lot of pressure on celebs, but that kinda comes with the territory.
anyway, I wasn't necessarily going to criticize her body cause lord knows my ass ain't perfect...you know, thunder thighs and all...I'm more disappointed in her performance as a whole.

right or wrong, everyone knows that's Sarah Silverman's schtick. kinda like Kathy Griffin. you know they are gonna say something inappropriate. it's ok for Sarah to make jokes at blacks and Jews, but not at Britney's kids? gimme a break. (I'm not saying that specifically at you Heather. ;) ) she's a comedian. would you say the same thing about/to George Carlin?

Looks like ol' Brit needs to slow down on the pills.
The performance would have been 100x better if she wasn't completely dazed. Girlfriend looks like she's been having cocktails of xanax, valium, and percocet. Really... she just looks pill-hazed to me.
She is a bit thicker now, but I don't think her body looks bad. I think it was a bad outfit choice; if a different two-piece would have been selected, the outcome may have been different. Her tummy definitely isn't as cut as it used to be, but I didn't think it looked like a jiggly beer gut. Obviously, more crunches would get her back to where she is... but looking at how she was a few months ago, this is a definite improvement. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets her abs back.
I didn't watch the VMAs, and I'm glad. I would be interested to know about this Kid Rock/Tommy Lee fight. Physical fight? Who won?

I know you're right about this. She's also said she loves sit ups. I still hate that we're so critical of people's bodies here and don't think it's necessary. And to be fair, on YouTube you can't really see her abs because of the resolution of the video so I couldn't really tell what they look like.

Well, when you've spent the last ten years of your life cultivating a self-image of "the whore next door," covering yourself in baby oil and dancing around the stage in your skivvies with a python wrapped your neck, any deviation in your personal appearance will result in a hailstorm of ridicule.

Her body is fine, IMO. I just don't think I would've chosen that outfit to make my comeback in, especially when people are expecting to see the body of the girl who performed with the snake a few years back. But let's face it, she's had two kids, has a sugary looking Starbucks drink in her hand in all the pap shots of her, been in and out of rehab and is still partying. She's 25 now. That's a lot of living for someone her age. I can't figure out if she is just disinterested in being that Britney Spears anymore or is just too wasted to care. By contrast, at least when Stevie was at the height of her cocaine use, she could still manage to give a compelling performance. And she was in her 30's. Whomever her manager is should have nixed this performance. I would not want to be her today. :distress:

The saddest part is that this is what the music industry has become. And it isn't just the pop music industry. It's the classical music industry as well. There's a much, much greater emphasis today on the looks of the performer. One wonders whether such plain pianists like Walter Gieseking or Ivan Moravec would have had careers in today's climate.

I'm not impugning their artistry. I haven't even heard them. I'm pointing out the ridiculous marketing involved.
The marketing of the violinist Vanessa-Mae is also all about pulchritude. The thinking seems to be that if you're not turned on by the body, you won't buy the recording of the violin sonatas.

completely agree and saddened that I'm as effected (or is it affected...I can't ever remember) as I am.
I heard Ann Wilson talk about just this very thing yesterday. however, and as much as I love her, I wonder how much of her discussion of this is jaded by her weight gain and the focus on that in the 80s. but, yeah, my point...same thing with Sarah Brightman. I love her. she's talented, but her publicity machine, public image, etc. is what's made her the biggest-selling soprano of all time. anyone that thinks Sarah can go up againts lesser-knowns Kathleen Battle or others is crazy.

i have never been a Brit fan - but i have seen many of her other performances and even though i don't generally like the songs she does or her "style" of music - she has always been a very good dancer/performer.
Enough so that her lip-syncing was forgiven ( by most).
but that performance was so far below anything i have seen her do.
there was no "snap" - forget about "snapple" and "pop" too.
she could hardly be troubled to bend over.
- i think they felt that if you surround her with a bunch of people really dancing and writhing around then no one will notice how she is just kinda standing there. to me it works the opposite. All those good dancers made her look lost and "pilled up" (shout out to sarah the air hockey queen.)
as for her body - what i noticed was more from the front on views, it looks like she had some muffin topping going on above her waist bend. Love handles are natural on a mother of two but this mother of two has enough money to make those things go away (hire an expensive trainer or get it lipo'd out)
i think the song choice was pretty lackluster as well. really just was boring.

Well, you could probably make this case with just about any performer. For example, if Stevie Nicks looked like, oh, Christine McVie, rather than Stevie Nicks, would she have been just as successful/captivating? If Stevie wore man-tailored jackets and jeans and stood behind a piano when she performed, would she be the same enchantress that captured our imaginations with her songs? Image and marketing are not everything, but they are definitely a component of our fascination with certain people.
BTW, this is not a knock against Christine McVie, who is a very handsome woman.

I just watched it again and I really think that a part of it may be that she didn't feel she needed to work hard to prepare for this because she's...Britney. I think her enablers are constantly telling her how fabulous she is and therefore she doesn't have to strive to be anything more than she is. I've never been a fan but at least in the past she could put on some kind of a show. This was painful to watch and I can only imagine the excuses that will come flying from her camp.
As far as her appearance, I thought she looked pretty decent. Who the hell runs around in a bra and panties, though? She's a mess- she needs to focus on her life and her kids. She has enough money to live a comfortable life- whatever talent she had appears to be on hiatus.

they're saying she was pissed. supposedly, she had an agreement with mtv that there would be no jokes about her kids or whatever. she supposedly heard sarah silverman practicing her routine right before she went on, and supposedly threatened to pull out last minute, but was convinced to do it anyway.
that's what they're saying anyway. i have no idea. i still think she looked pill dazed.

Saw part of the Britney clip on several shows yesterday. The teeny video on computer that I first saw of her performance and then after seeing it again on a large tv screen in my living room on several news shows, well I take back what I said in my other message.
Britney was a mess, y'all:lol:
Never trust a teeny, tiny video clip on the Internet:rolleyes:
I need new glasses:lol::lol:
Alot of Ledgies were right. Britney has the money and had time to prepare for this show. She shouldn't be out partying if she plans to make a come-back in front of a national tv audience on MTV.
All I can say is I probably can move faster than Britney did and I am 25 years older than she is:p
Sarah Silverman, still don't know or care who she is. I read what she said about Britney's two sons. Apparently, S.S. isn't a very nice person and I don't care if she's suppose to be a funny comedian. Never make fun of children. I don't care whose children they are. Just wrong, wrong, wrong in my book:mad:

Well I didn't think she made fun of the kids but she did use them to make fun of Brit. I wouldn't have done it. But I would have thought Brit would have a thicker skin than that. She should give her pal Madonna a call and get her sh*t together. Nothing ever brought her down. Also, someone makes fun of you so you can't dance? Baloney. She was on something. Alcohol at least.

again, agreed.
one of the rumours is that there was an agreement between Britney and MTV that Sarah wouldn't make any jokes about her and when she found out she was going to, she decided to upstage her own performance to "teach them a lesson" - but, a) I don't believe this at all and b) if it is true, Britney's the idiot...her plan didn't work. lol.
as Sarah said was that Britney's kids are the cutest mistakes ever and then made fun of Britney's hairless vajayjay.

On the subject of criticism of her body, CNN has an article about that
http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Music/09/11/bulging.britney.ap/index.html?iref=mpstoryview
NEW YORK (AP) -- The consensus is clear: Britney Spears performed like she was sloshing blindfolded through mud at MTV's Video Music Awards. No one disputes that the troubled pop princess royally mangled her much-heralded comeback.
Britney Spears' less-than-hard body has been criticized almost as much as her VMA performance.
But what about the nastiest comments of all -- those about her body? "Lard and Clear," read Monday's headline in the New York Post. "The bulging belly she was flaunting was SO not hot," wrote E! Online. And so on.
Was it fair? Did Spears, lest we forget a mother of two, deserve to be held up against the standard of her once fantastically toned abs, sculpted by sessions of 1,000 tummy crunches? Or was she asking for it by choosing that unforgiving black-sequined bikini?
More profoundly, in an age where skinny models and skeletal actresses are under scrutiny for the message they're sending young girls, what does it say that we're excoriating a young woman for a little thickness in her middle?

Well, I'm no Britney fan, but I didn't think that her appearance was any different than it has ever been, really. It has been too long ago that the media was talking about what great shape she is in---back when she was doing secret performances. Now, They are saying she is totally out of shape. She looked basically like I remembered.
Her performance was lackluster at best. She wasn't dancing around really. She was barely moving. Her lipsynching was off. That part was pretty bad.
I personally think that there are people out there that people just love to hate, and she is definitely one of those people!

I still think it's outfit choice. If she had worn something different.. not bikini boy shorts that created a muffin top... then people would probably be saying, "well, she's not as tiny as she used to be, but for a mom of 2, she's in very good shape." That's just the opinion that I have, because I remember back in the early K-Fed/self-destruction days where she was seriously packing on the pounds and looking like total trailer trash all.the.time. Homegirl never, ever looked good back then. As boring as the performance was, her body was in much better shape than in the past.
I think she's in kind of a lose-lose situation, really. Tabloids, etc. started making fun of her a long time ago, and they're reluctant to break that cycle. Her VMA performance would have had to have been nothing short of OMG STELLAR to get any sort of positive reaction at all. The bar is set incredibly high for her right now.
That said, I do think she can still have her comeback. And this VMA performance can be tossed in the mix when they say, "overcoming tabloid attention, a shaved head, a lackluster VMA performance, blahblahblah." She needs to get in there and bust it in the gym and in dance rehearsals. Then, when the album drops, she'll have a few good videos - her videos are historically pretty good, considering the songs - a live performance here or there, and she can get her pop queen title back. For all we know, this could have been a stunt. God knows it wouldn't be the first. All eyes are on her now, and if she comes out next time and does better than this, it'll be positive attention.

OutQ loves Stevie. I loved Stevie doing RnR. I think the version you probably heard, from CV, isn't the best version, but I like her version typically.

Obviously she's really badly advised, she should have avoided this if she wasn't ready: I never cared at all for Britney Spears but to see her demolished as an easy target doesn't look to me very funny either. She's only 25, her career is not over, this is just a negative chapter.

You Know, Im sick of the media picking on her.
I admit, I used to be a HUGE Britney fan-I was like 8-10, do you think I knew any better?
But the thing is, what does everyone expect her body to be perfect again? She had TWO kids!! No Matter What, people do not get thier body back after having a baby, and its not like shes totally huge, what shes not a 0 any more, shes a 4/6? oh well. shes still thin.
I thought she looked pretty, not her hair of course, she should have had a light brown wig on, but her makeup and stuff was done well. Her outfit? blech, yeah, but thats what shes umm...famous for is wearing skimpy outfits. you expect her to cover her self up if she plans on getting fans back?
Her new song, not my taste. Its true Brit though. something she would normally sing. Her dancing was off, so what? She hasnt been doing it for 3 years as often as she was when she was touring and making alot of videos. you cant just step back into it.
and if that stuff happened with the hostess, I would be freaking out too, if I had two kids who I loved, and somebody called them mistakes Id smack them. She couldnt do that though, or even argue...why? because she had to be onstage, she could have been arrested, and MTV could have sued her for not fuffilling her contractual obligations.
Her preformance was not up to 'Britney Spears standards' no, but it was half decent compared to alot of other young stars live preformances IMO.
Am I saying I love Britney, no, I'm just saying, its a better preformance than most people give, and shell eventually get better.
I feel bad for her after all of the stuff shes been through, yeah its her fault some of it, but isnt everybody allowed to make mistakes?

Or did the skank factor register as such with viewers who know today's hot look?
I didn't watch a video but I looked at some of the photos. She looked like something they'd chase down & pick up on "Cops." So to me, in that regard, I guess you could say that I thought she was a major success!

She said pop songs. Not deeply meaningful songs.
That's the glory of music. It can be important, or it can be ear candy. Some people obviously find her songs enjoyable, or she wouldn't have sold millions of records. Part of it is image, but kids like danceable, pop floss. There's nothing wrong with that.
