I had tix to Concord Pavilion & was getting ready to go & of course around 5 p.m. the Loma Prieta quake struck. A quick phone call to the venue saved us a wasted car trip. The next night was the Cal Expo show in Sacratomato, & I enjoyed it somewhat, even though I didn't like the air of elevator music presentation to everything, the "smooth jazz" arrangements (like Alice & How Still My Love) & the baby-bunny electronica (Edge of Seventeen, Dreams, etc.) that didn't seem right for Nicks to me. I felt the same way about the album. A few days after Sacratomato, we drove a long way over to Mountain View for that show, & I was hearing some tapes from earlier in the tour too & I felt every night was a carbon copy of every other night. It wasn't pulling me in. I didn't like the look & the flaccid vocal--I kept wondering "Where's her old rock & roll, such as it was?" I taped the Shoreline show but when that video that Stevie made for her crew got into the stream, I must have thrown it out. I really missed the c.1980 Fleetwood Mac at that point & figured it was all a distant memory & no more. :(

Still looking forward to your UTube videos, Ethan.

I saw the 2nd Mansfield show (I heard the first was better). She sang Alice while holding a small magnifying glass up to her eye during some parts...that was kind of fun. She wasn't moving all that much, I recall, and the sound was just horrible where I was sitting. At the time I thought the clothes were getting excessive, as was the hair...and I wasn't wrong about either. The band wasn't so bad. A nice change up from the RAL band, I thought. There was a stupid drum solo during the show, with the flying drumsticks that glowed in the dark, that I HATED.
Some of my family went with me. They had never seen her before but had heard me playing her music constantly over the years. They gave the show polite praise, but I knew they were being kind because it kind of sucked. She had the reputation, still, of being an energtic performer and she just wasn't that night.

Little did I know that things could get worse...(stay tuned for Timespace Tour)

I caught the 8/25 and 9/8 Wantagh shows. My reaction the first night was the same, "That was it?". I just couldn't believe she could have changed so much from RAL. Granted, I saw the change coming since 2 years prior I caught a night of the 'Tango' tour and she was morphing into the Klonopinbot even then. But this was far, far worse. I was worried for her...

Love your recollection. I laughed...I cried. really, I didn't see that tour personally, but I've seen enough photos & recordings - sounds like you're spot on!

Yeah the Klonopin just absolutely killed her on this one in every aspect of the show really. But hey at least it was a different show, unlike what we've been seeing for the past 2 years with her now.

Set List was great though - Rooms on Fire, Talk to Me, Alice, Juliet, No Spoken Word, and How Still My Love in the same set...hell yeah! Some of my favorite musical arrangements come from this tour. I was a fan for all the tinker toy keyboards. There were some good shows. The whole European leg was really good. Grab the London DVD if you can from this tour...great show.

Hmm...well, where to begin. It's all really subjective, isn't it? I mean, what I found to be awful someone else might have found to be lovely. Like for example, I didn't like the 'tinkly' synths and 'Alice in Wonderland' theme. It just seemed, to me, like a step in a complete other direction from someone who was once considered the 'Queen of Rock', like she was headed to 'Lite Jazz' or 'Muzak' or something close to it. Her bands in the past always had great chops and seemed like they were a real band and had a blast playing together. The OSOTM line-up? Meh. I felt like I didn't know a soul up there except for Sharon and Lori, and Russ Kunkel. Oh, and I guess Bobby Martin from the RAL tour was up there too, but I didn't like him on that tour either.

Should I bother talking about her costumes and hair? Another radical departure from the Stevie persona we all knew. Late 80's hair can be forgiven, but those bathrobe things with padded shoulders? No one was wearing those in 1989! It was so obvious to me that Stevie was trying to hide someone newfound bulk in those new robes.

Stevie's singing style was dramatically different. The voice she sang with last on RAL and some of the 'Tango' sessions was over, replaced by a new voice she picked up by the 'Tango' tour. She was more nasal rather than throaty, instead of reaching for a note she just stayed in the same place diaphragmatically, and she didn't exactly move much either. But, I think there was a foot or ankle issue at one point in this tour- not sure. This was the beginning of the platform Reebok era too- again, there was a foot or ankle issue or something which everyone attributes this to. I don't buy it though- because not only her footwear changed, SHE changed.

The tour merchandise wasn't very striking. I wasn't happy with the black or red tee-shirt with the Stevie top-hat image, because it had been forever since she wore a top-hat on stage and I didn't like to be reminded of the comparison between those days and then. I did buy the white tee, with the weird crescent/Stevie image. Had it for quite a few years, in fact- it was a large size so it was good for sleeping.

I don't know, not good memories. I waited ALL summer for that Jones Beach show. I bought the tickets in May when they went on sale, and had to wait until August 25th. Back in those days, Jones Beach tickets were not available via Ticketmaster on the first day. You had to get there the day before the sale, and get a 'bracelet'. And you waited for HOURS. This secured your place on line for the next day. The next morning, you had to be there at 7 am and get on line, and hope all the people in front of you weren't buying Stevie tickets. When I finally got to the counter, I discovered there were no more floor seats left, I had to settle for mezzanine. It was just too, too much of a disappointment: 19 years old and spent a blazing hot morning in the sun with no shade for hours until I got to the box office window. Oh, yay- besides Stevie crappy seats, I scored 7th row for Tom Petty w/The Replacements, 3rd row for Neil Young w/The Indigo Girls, and more mezzanine seats for 'Poison'. Wheee.

I saw this on at Jones Beach too. Let's see, I was 21. I remember being surprised at the setlist. I remember being obsessed with the fact that we didn't have floor seats and once again wouldn't make it up front for Edge. Other than that, kind of unmemorable. Oh, I bought a beautiful sweatshirt- white with a kind of black and white drawing of her face- it was crazy expensive but I loved it.

Late 80's hair can be forgiven, but those bathrobe things with padded shoulders? No one was wearing those in 1989! It was so obvious to me that Stevie was trying to hide someone newfound bulk in those new robes.

While I agree with the rest of your post, on this- I beg to differ.

No seriously, it *was* over the top but it was Stevie so it was okay.

Funny that you bring up hiatus and the Mirror tour......that is the way it was for me as well. I still went to the Timespace, Mask and SA shows but my interest had really waned. Stevie just wasn't Stevie anymore. It was a gradual thing and started on the RAL tour for me but the OSOTM was abysmal. I hated the way she sounded, I hated her band and she was so disengaged. I did hand her a giant stuffed thing during one of the Edge walks in 89, so that is one highlight I remember.... (how embarrassing!)
I can say I enjoyed the SA shows I attended but I still don't think I saw the "Stevie" I had always loved again until 1997. (even the 96 show was a bit sketchy...she was so sickly looking )
