In Todd Haynes' new Bob Dylan film, six actors portray the Bobster at different stages in his life: Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, Christian Bale, Ben Whishaw (he's the actor in Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer) and newcomer Marcus Carl Franklin.
Who's gonna be the best? (I'm not gonna include Marcus in the poll since he's a newbie).

So did Bob Dylan go through a stage in his life where he was a long lanky middle-aged blonde British woman? If so, I think Cate Blanchett would be perfect for that part! :xoxo:

Cate's actually Australian ;)

Have you seen her done up as Dylan? She looks amazing

Sorry Carrie I forgot :distress:

And I reckon Marcus Carl Franklin is probably the most interesting: he plays plays Dylan as a boy named Woody!?

...yes, amazingly like Laurie Anderson! She is hardly believable as Dylan.

umm...... When was dylan a young black boy..... or when was he an "I look like an old version of John Lennon"? I guess I don't get it. But I have heard about this movie and I really want to see it.

I think you're missing the whole point. A young black boy is also portraying Dylan, it's about different aspects of his persona.
Also I never said she looks amazingly like Dylan just that she looks amazing. Bale, Ledger or Gere don't look like him either, so what?

I gotta go with Cate on every account.

Then consider me lost. So if they are not even going for physical authenticity, why do they even bother trying to put these actors in Bob Dylan drag? I mean, this kind of casting works in opera and the theatre (where the audience has to use their imaginations), but it seems kinda lame for a film. The premise is sounding more and more like a bad NYU film student project.

I think Cate is going to be fabulous. I am not really a fan of Heath Ledger and Richard Gere, so I am not expecting much. I'm really looking forward to this movie though.

I voted Christian Bale, but it's really even between him and Cate. They're my favorite actors!

I for one think the concept is very interesting.

This is such a bad idea for a movie. (I just pray that the offal Todd Haynes never touches Fleetwood Mac after what he did to glam, Sirk, and, now, Dylan). Only one person could play Dylan: Adam Sandler.

...Yeah. That would be great.

Physical likeness isn't everything.

yikes.

i don't think he "did" anything to glam ... velvet goldmine was great.

btw, i think the word you're looking for is "awful" although "offal" in that context is pretty funny.

Cate blanchett by a mile. She's my favourite actress so got to say that. She's going to win the Oscar next year for the Golden Age - lay your bets now -don't say i didn't give you the heads up early!

And she's not only Australian but also only 35 - does that count as middle aged now????

I like Cate as well, even if she has a tendency to take herself too seriously. But I just think this movie is sounding more and more like a disaster. Todd Haynes can run the gambit between brilliance and utter crapola; there's nothing middling about him.

I suppose 35 (or so she claims to be) is a bit shy of middle age... but it's definitely around the corner from it. I'm a few years older and I consider myself firmly middle aged. I have never understood why people in their late 40s and 50s consider themselves "middle aged." I mean, since when did people begin to assume we were all going to live to be 100?

Cate Blanchett by far and then Christian Bale. The trailer is quite impressive, and I've always liked Todd Haynes, even in his most baroque moments there's always something good.

Well, I think Adam Sandler looks more like Bob Dylan than any of those actors, for sure. I just find it fascinating that not one of the actors Haynes casts is Jewish. Though that's not the only reason Adam Sandler would be great in the role (with a different director).

And as for: i think the word you're looking for is "awful" although "offal" in that context is pretty funny.

I intentionally used the word "offal." That's what Todd Haynes is to me, and his movies. Offal.

The video of her in the film that was leaked today was...interesting. She plays him well but I don't think his speaking voice was ever that high.
I think Richard Gere and Heath Ledger look the most promising to me at this point.

Really? I don't think much of Sandler as an actor, to be honest. I mean - he has progressed a bit. Films like Punch Drunk Love show that, but it's just hard for me to take him seriously.

of course he's a serious actor. he was opera man, for god's sake!!

Hmmm, can't picture Adam Sandler playing Dylan other than in a skit, but I guess if Cate can play him, then why not?

More on Cate playing Dylan, plus a clip, here:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=476971&in_page_id=1773

I thought this was interesting: "I'm Not There is the first biographical feature to win the approval of Dylan."

Also there was this from producer Harvey Weinstein in the New York Times recently:

He said he also planned to position Ms. Blanchett, who plays Mr. Dylan during his “Blonde on Blonde” phase, for an Oscar. (Mr. Bale corresponds to “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan,” Mr. Ledger to “John Wesley Harding.”)

“I may be jumping the gun,” Mr. Weinstein said, “but if Cate Blanchett doesn’t get nominated, I’ll shoot myself.”

THIS is why Adam Sandler should be in this movie. I couldn't focus on anything but how much he looks like Dylan when I saw the trailer for Reign on Me.
