after reading about alleged (damn you Kathy Griffin for making me love that word) "borrowing" of others' songs to "inspire" her own, I wondered what Stevie has contributed to the world with pure originality. what do you think? with respect to any aspect of her career and/or life? what has she written, sang, done, worn, said, etc. that was purely original and noteworthy? maybe nothing, maybe a lot. what say you?

That is too damn funny. If you do that more often with different stills and say "Stevie's ____" I will laugh hysterically everytime.

The "She loves you, she told me" is also funny. :]

I'll let you see if you can pick out what's wrong in those posts. obviously, you need to go back to elementary school more than I do. and just so you know, I skipped all the times you didn't hyphenate correctly. but just so you also know and someday, your children will also know (go Julia Sugarbaker), when you use two or more words serving as a single adjective before a noun, you should hyphenate them.

you can sit back and bake in your new-found, self-imposed glory if you want. no one cares. no one's noticing. but you start coming for me and I will gut you like the piece you are.

bring it.

Uh-oh, thread drift. . . .
I think Stevie's lyrics are (mostly) original in style. No one else in rock for the past two or three decades or so writes with quite that combination of childlikeness & mystery & wonder over windswept love. What's (sort of) interesting about Stevie is that the impression you get of her is that she's writing about the supernatural & not necessarily the natural, but if you go back & look at her stuff, she's almost always writing about the natural -- only in a sort of supernatural dialect. She infuses the perfectly natural with mystery, so she ends up confounding the listener's clear separation between the two. Ta-da... so that's her pretty darn original contribution to pop-rock (you'd probably have to go back to silent film to find a similar quality), along with her singing style. Nobody sounds like that. Everybody usually thinks that Stevie is so witchy & spectral, but virtually all of that is metaphorical.

I never really thought about it like that. can you give some specific lyrics that you think support this?

"It's just the ghost of what you want to be/And the ghost of the past that you live in" -- the "ghost" of dreams & desires & the "ghost" of painful memories

"She is like a cat in the dark/And then she is the darkness/She rules her life like a fine skylark/And when the sky is starless" -- a starless sky is an especially dark night, so it restates the central metaphor but in a less creepy way; also a "cat in the dark" is a stealthy woman, a woman whose allure fascinates others (a cat can look at a king, etc. etc.) but whom others don't understand & probably don't even see clearly

"You didn't mean to meet her, you cried/Oh but the sun goes down every night" -- restates the Rhiannon myth of the prince who chases Rhiannon on horseback but never catches her & has to give up each day, but restates it in a cloaked way & gives you the impression of danger & fear in the unknown

Stevie's lovely gypsy image has been carefully calculated, and I dunno if it's totally original looking at the big picture. Dickens inspired the street urchin.Problem is, Nicks never specified which street urchin. Was it poor sick Jo, the streetsweep, in "Bleak House"?

http://www.victorianweb.org/periodicals/punch/17.jpg

I think most of her look in those old days came from "Bewitched" on TV (the early '70s), plus the general look of the hippie girls, the holdovers from the Summer of Love. I think the frequent Dickens mention is a red herring.
