It's being shown at the NY Film Fest:

"Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream," directed by Peter Bogdanovich, US, 2007
Rarely, if ever, has the history and development of a major rock band been explored with the care and the depth with which Peter Bogdanovich approaches Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Starting out from Gainesville Florida, the band (as Mudcrutch) headed to Los Angeles in the mid-'70s and soon attracted the attention of producer Denny Cordell. Their first singles failed to cause much of a stir in the U.S., but in the U.K., they were hailed as the best American band in years. After a hugely successful European tour, they headed home, this time finding a much warmer response from critics and the public alike. Liberally peppered with rare concert footage--from Florida bars to "The Top of the Pops" to major stadium appearances--the film also chronicles Petty's epic battles with the record industry and collaborations with Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Roger McGuinn and the Traveling Wilburys. Dispensing with the cynicism that usually accompanies longevity in rock music, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have managed to remain fresh, feisty and popular for over thirty years. Peter Bogdanovich helps us understand why.

Holy Ring Cycle! That's a LOT of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Nearly 4 hrs long.

This film might prove to be the "Last Waltz" of today. If it does, Stevie will be a part of it.

Unless a large portion of this documentary consists of Tom Petty leading an Arab army against Turkey during the first world war, there's no reason for it to be 238 minutes long.

I had written a longer reply and accidentally deleted it. So I'll just say that Peter Bogdanovich is a great filmmaker so I'm excited to see this (in other words: I'm seeing it for Bogdanovich not for Petty). And I'm really hopeful there's some Peter-meets-Stevie stuff in the doc.

About Peter B. I'd say he's on my short list of filmmakers I'd love to do a "narrative" movie about Fleetwood Mac (for his creds on such material, check out "The Cat's Meow" or "This Thing Called Love" not to mention two of the greatest American films of all time: "The Last Picture Show" and "Texasville"). The other filmmakers I'd want to do a movie about the Mac are: John Boorman, Alan Rudolph, Kathryn Bigelow, and (one can dream) Bernardo Bertolucci.

And since this is a fun game to play, I have to recommend to Hollywood that this actor be cast to play Lindsey:

Steven Strait!

I'd post his pictures on here, but I'm afraid he's too hot to handle! oy. (And I'd feel silly but check him out). There's a great picture of him with a guitar/banjo and a cigarette in his mouth that is so Lindsey. But he's just the dreamiest thing ever.

I can't figure who should play Stevie, Christine, John, and Mick (maybe a computer animated Shreck-like Mick would be good )

Ok so this was as long as my last post. . . just without pictures.

I've always been a casual Petty fan, but seeing him on tour twice last year converted me to a new appreciation for his music. I can't wait to see this and see La Nicks during one of the best tours she's done.

In 1974, in Gainesville, Florida, Tom Petty hopped into a van to L.A. to pursue his dreams of rock & roll stardom. Ten miles outside of town, the van broke down. Captured on video, these moments of never-seen footage are a blip in the amazing four-hour documentary “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” in which director Peter Bogdanovich tells the Heartbreakers’ story. The doc also features Eddie Vedder, Stevie Nicks, Dave Grohl and others talking about Petty’s legacy. It hits in October, but the S.S. got a sneak preview. If you’re a Petty fan (and who isn’t?), prepare to wet yourself.

"Runnin' Down A Dream: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers," a Film by Peter Bogdanovich, to Debut at New York Film Festival
Chronicle Books to Release Petty Retrospective

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - September 10, 2007) - On October 14, the hotly anticipated Warner Bros. Records film "Runnin' Down A Dream: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" will have its first public screening. Directed by cinema legend Peter Bogdanovich ("The Last Picture Show"), "Runnin' Down A Dream" has been selected to close the 2007 New York Film Festival. "Runnin' Down A Dream" tells a great American story, that of a band that came from the middle of nowhere to win the hearts of millions. The film focuses not only on the Heartbreakers' inspiring ride to the top but the story of what they did when they got there, as artists, as a band, as people. Bogdanovich's film explores many of the underlying reasons for the band's unparalleled capacity not only to endure but to thrive. Gritty, exuberant, infectious: "Runnin' Down A Dream" tells the Heartbreakers' story as never before. The New York Film Festival screening will take place at the legendary Walter Reade Theater on October 14. Beginning October 15, "Runnin' Down A Dream" will be screened at select theaters nationwide. A list of cities and participating theaters will be announced shortly.

The film, two years in the making, weaves together remarkable archival material, previously unseen 8mm footage, new live and rehearsal footage, and extensive interviews conducted by director Bogdanovich. Producer, George Drakoulias claims that it was Bogdanovich's work on "The Last Picture Show" that made him think the director would have a sensitivity for the context of the Heartbreakers' story. "That movie made me think that Peter could really grasp the intricacies of what we were looking at in this 30-year career," Drakoulias explains. In zeroing in on both the shadows and the light around the band's uniquely American success story, Bogdanovich finally explores the complexity of the American dream itself. As he describes, "I saw the film as a vivid piece of Americana about a natural-born poet-musician from Florida who decided to go West with a richly talented band to become rock stars. It is an extraordinary odyssey, the fascination being I think in the details of the adventure."

"Runnin' Down A Dream" digs deep in order to reveal the combination of unwavering talent, artistic vision, and sheer persistence that has made the Heartbreakers' thirty-plus year run possible. The film features in-depth interviews with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and the circle of musicians, friends and collaborators who came into the band's orbit over the years. Participants include Stevie Nicks, Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, George Harrison, Jackson Browne, Roger McGuinn, Dave Stewart, Jeff Lynne, Rick Rubin, Jimmy Iovine, Johnny Depp, and others.

In addition to tracking the Heartbreakers over their decades together, "Runnin' Down A Dream" also follows Tom Petty's solo adventures and his time as a Traveling Wilbury alongside George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison. A celebration of what can happen when artists are given the chance to explore the depths of their own talent, "Runnin' Down A Dream" is the story of an artistic victory unlike any other.

In mid-October, building upon the film's momentum, Chronicle Books will release "Runnin' Down A Dream," a 250-page coffee table book that will be available in mid-October at book shops throughout the US and Canada. It includes more than 300 photos and extensive text from the Bogdanovich interviews. Together, the interviews and photos provide a unique, inside perspective on the remarkable life and career of a rock and roll legend.

Tickets for the New York Film Festival screening will be available at www.filmlinc.com/nyff/tickets.html.
