Great lists everyone. I can't believe I completely blew off The Police in mine though. Just a shame.

I'm really surprised that so many of you have new bands and artists in your lists, seeing as I listen to primarily old school stuff, I find 98% of new music to be genuinely awful.

For all of you that love The Killers...I have to admit I really like their song "Read My Mind."

Sharon's such a whore for the Durst.

I kind of hate these lists, I tend to overthink them - like, how can I be such a big fan if all I have are a couple of greatest hits by some of these artists; others, I have their entire collection? Where do I draw the line? I can't handle the stress, so screw it. I consider the following among my favorite artists:

Patty Griffin
Heart
Petty
Neil Diamond
Johnny Cash
Cyndi Lauper
The Killers
The Eagles
Don Henley
The Beatles
Kelly Clarkson
Martina McBride
Patsy Cline
Elvis (later, fatter Elvis please & thanks)

Mamas & the Papas
The Supremes

yeah, very true, but it seems that everyone had to get started getting popular way before 1980 to fit your faves. No faves from the last 25 years, Chili?

Check the list...Dwight Yoakam, Big & Rich, Vince Gill, etc. Basically, I started appreciating country music within the last 25 years (actually, 15).

But, basically, from a rock/pop standpoint, not really. (everything that has come from the last 25 years in the rock/pop category, to me, is just rehash, and not what I'd call "creatively", of what came before it.) However, if you consider that Derek Trucks of the Allman Bros Band is only 27 years old, his own band, the Derek Trucks Band is one of my faves...they'd meet your criteria.

So, yeah, the '60s & '70s was the peak of music for my generation (people born between 1955-1965), so it would just be natural (as opposed to Bb or B#) that music from that era would be what I'd prefer to gravitate toward.

I really am. Certain things not so much, music yes. I can agree that she's written some decent songs, but for the most part she can't sing. I've notcied that the great majority of her recordings are her talking/ranting quickly with music in the backround. The one song I will admit to liking at one point in my life was "Precious Illusions."

That's really sad, I think. If there is one thing on this planet that has plenty of room for grey areas - and I mean EVERY shade of grey - then, it's music. :distress:

I like some of Alanis's stuff, and some of it I don't. Her style is her own, and I don't have a problem with her using "speak-sing" from time to time.

Some might say the same about our Miss Nicks, especially more recent efforts. :D We've discussed her "talk-singing/sing-talking" many times here.

As for Alanis - meh. She's OK. I was all over Jagged Little Pill when it came out. Listened to it again recently, and I was pretty bored tbqh. I think that has more to do with the fact that so many of the tunes were way overplayed rather than the music being bad though.

Funny, I was just thinking about her today. Some newish song of hers was playing (or one I've never heard) while I was waiting for my bagel and I thought "wow, she's a perfect example of an artist I used to love and now makes me want to pull my eyeballs out." I was even thinking of starting a thread here, like "who did you used to love but now hate."

I just wanted to note that I mentioned Alanis as a songwriter . . . not necessarily as a singer. Her lyrics are incredibly personal, intuitive and honest. I agree that her singing style is not always to my liking. If you are turned off by the singing, it is a shame because she has some song lyrics that are really, really good. Her songs actually help me understand myself a bit better!
