Stevie Nicks downsizes life, upsizes charity work

With her 60th birthday looming, Stevie Nicks is making some changes.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has put the Paradise Valley home she has owned since 1981 up for sale, and has expanded her charitable efforts beyond benefits for the Arizona Heart Institute, a favorite of her late father, Jess.

She's also selling a house in Los Angeles to move to a smaller place on the beach in Santa Monica.

"I'm downsizing," Nicks said in a call last week. "I'm moving into a rock-and-roll penthouse where I can do my work. I don't want to worry about if the pool is taken care of and the grass is right."

Nicks, who performs in Phoenix on July 28, said she's spent only a few weeks annually at her Valley home in recent years. In addition, her brother, Chris, and his family, who shared the two-winged home at the foot of Camelback Mountain, have moved.

"I've written many famous songs there, so I hope somebody buys it who appreciates the amazing rock-and-roll history and the legendary behavior that's gone on in that house," said Nicks, who successfully underwent rehab for drug abuse in the '80s.

With the 2005 passing of Jess Nicks, who headed Armour/Greyhound before becoming a concert promoter, the singer has found a new outlet for her charitable side - providing encouragement and music to U.S. servicemen hospitalized in the Washington, D.C., area after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"They are so banged up. If anyone ever needed help, it's these guys," said Nicks, who has visited Army and Navy medical centers since 2004.

Nicks came up with the idea of giving song-filled iPods to the hospitalized servicemen.

"I call it a soldiers' iPod. It has all the crazy stuff that I listen to, and my collections I've been making since the '70s for going on the road," Nicks said. "When I'm sick . . . or the couple of times in my life that I have really been down, music is what always dances me out of bed."

She hit up fellow musicians and friends for money to buy the iPods and has given away hundreds.

Nicks is setting up a foundation that will allow her to accept donations on a wider scale for iPods and medical aid such as prosthetic limbs. The non-profit group will be called Stevie Nicks' Band of Soldiers.

The voice behind such rock classics as Edge of Seventeen, Rhiannon, Landslide and Stand Back said she still has plenty of energy left over for her music, which is celebrated on her new CD, Crystal Visions: The Very Best of Stevie Nicks.

She acknowledged that the thought of turning 60 next May "blows my mind," but quickly added, "I think age is definitely a state of mind. Our mothers and grandmothers . . . at 60 were really looking at slowing down. If anything, I'm looking at adding in a lot of stuff."

Nicks is including video shots of the artwork she has created since the '70s in her stage show, which features a seven-piece band led by Los Angeles guitar wizard Waddy Wachtel.

She's also working on a screenplay based on the Menologion, a collection of myths and stories that inspired Rhiannon.

"I want it to be a movie or miniseries. It's such a fantastic group of stories," said Nicks, who plans to talk to directors Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson about the project.

Plus there's her idea for a cartoon based on a song she wrote called The Ladybug and the Goldfish:

"It will be the love story of this interspecies, interracial kind of thing."

Nicks' creative side doesn't extend to making radical changes to the hits she has recorded with Fleetwood Mac and on her own. She won't take a page from the Police's ongoing tour, in which the British band has redone some of its biggest hits.

"We don't mess with the actual arrangements too much, because people aren't crazy about that," Nicks said.

"You can't change the solo in (Eric Clapton's) Layla. Lindsey (Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac) can't change the solo in Go Your Own Way, as much as he'd like to."

Nicks' unmistakable smoky vocals and her dramatic stage presence are a combination that needs no refinement, in the eyes of XM Satellite Radio's Mike Marrone.

"She's a true rock-and-roll icon," said Marrone, who programs the Loft, which spotlights singer-songwriters.

"I think it's her voice . . . and her spirit. People genuinely like her, almost as a member of an extended family."

If done right, this Rhiannon movie project could be HUGE. It is different and really is a story worth being told. Wow, can you imagine watching this in the movie theater with Stevie's music interwoven throughout the whole movie?

If Stevie finally gives a little, we hopefully could see some cool merchandising for this, but doubt it unless that falls into the realm of the director. (Chris better not get within 1000 feet of this project).

Stevie I bet would be the producer. Just thinking of all the possibilities for this project makes me smile from ear to ear. It could really boost Stevie to another level. This really could be her swan song of her career.

Well, out of curiosity, I searched on domain names relating to rhiannon and found this. http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/results.jsp?domain=rhiannonthemovie.com

It actually was registered on July 26, 2007. So, unless this is a weird coincidence, there might be some truth to all of this Rhiannon movie project moving forward. Lots of times, studios will buy domain names to set up just for a movie.

Edit: or on the cynical side, could be a domain name squatter, but only time will tell I guess. I just went to the URL and is set up with one of those generic search sites, but could just be a place holder until the site is up and running. Who knows.

For God's sake, Stevie, hire a really good CLEANING lady!!!
I hope she remembers where she hid the bodies!!!

Really though, THUMBS UP to her. Clearly she hasn't been as productive in recent years as she has in the past; and I think she's beginning to realize that that really is true. "Downsizing" and getting rid of the distractions, I feel, is an excellent way to return to her true creative self.
She's pulling the mattress into the closet, locking the door and taking the phone off the hook. God only knows what this extremely successful, experienced songwriter can come up with at this point. I really do think she still has enormous potential....

Y'all are so sensitive - could it be she tried it and after a few years didn't like it  Maybe the house appreciated a few million and she wants to sell it. After all, this is consistent with her being a nomad. When has she ever lived anywhere longer than a few years? Also, some of the condos in Santa Monica are likely larger than the house she has now. So, I do not see any inconsistency here.

Of course, it could be that LB finally stated for real this time that their affair is over, he is not going to marry her, and K is the one - so he will not be moving in.

As for the projects, she has consistently said she'd like to do them. I hope she does.

I was actually rather shocked that Lori, Chris and Jessica moved out. Were they shooed out of the nest or did they leave on their own? I mean, what crazy person would voluntarily move out of Stevie's fabulous world? So it stands to reason why Stevie doesn't want to be bothered with keeping the pool clean or the lawn maintained- Chris probably was taking care of this for all of these years. In any case I would imagine that it must have been rather devastating for Stevie to come back from the road to an empty house. Not only is she an old maid... she's also an empty-nester too. I don't blame her one bit for wanting to downsize and make a fresh new start. Plus, I don't think she ever really belonged in Malibu... by moving down to Santa Monica she will be closer to her core constituency :p .

It's confusing, but Santa Monica is being bandied about in a generic sense. The 2005 Australian mag interview said Santa Monica when in fact she lives in Pacific Palisades, a section of LA. I've heard the new house is also in the Palisades and not "on the beach" in Santa Monica. Malibu, Palisades and Santa monica seem to be used interchangeably, but they are three disctinct areas.

If I'm not mistaken, Chris & Lori have separated (divorcing?). So, that would necessitate a relocation, I would think.

Plus, I don't think she ever really belonged in Malibu... by moving down to Santa Monica she will be closer to her core constituency :p .

Or, she just wants to keep close tabs on the upcoming Lindsay Lohan trial.

. . . Btw, downsizing = downsizing. Doesn't mean moving to a bigger place.

I took the term "downsizing" in context with the pool and the yard, which she specifically referred to. I think she is tired of keeping up a house. If she is moving into a penthouse, all she does is pay the association fee (presumably every month) and the condo staff takes care of everything. It is the reason I no longer live in a house and live in a condo.

"You can't change the solo in (Eric Clapton's) Layla. Lindsey (Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac) can't change the solo in Go Your Own Way, as much as he'd like to."

Uhhh, Stevie...Eric Clapton completely rearranged "Layla" about fifteen years ago (oh God does that make me feel old), and it was a HUGE hit for him. BTW, it's nice to get the annual "Rhiannon" movie/"The Lady Bug And The Goldfish" cartoon comments.

She has the house listed on MLS for $3,800,000. It shows pictures of the inside and outside of the house -- she painted the interior red walls white, I guess so it is "staged" for sale.

But what the hell--okay, I know I've been really busy lately but I hadn't heard that Lori and Chris were separated/divorcing! Who's got the 411? Spill dammit!!!

How can that house POSSIBLY be only 4 million dollars?

Also, did anybody notice that for "date built" it said "1997?"

On Edit: Oh wait - On stevie-nicks.info, it says "1983." I guess somebody just made a mistake.

By the way, I hope I'm not being a stick in the mud here, but for the love of GOD kids, PLEASE don't go bothering these real estate people with a whole bunch of questions or "inquiries" or "requests for a showing." It might sound like a silly idea that people would do it - but Gillian Anderson had to warn people on her website that she would call the police and have people ARRESTED if they did that kind of stuff - it was that much of a problem, when she sold HER house. And Stevie WILL NOT be there; I feel that's almost a certainty.
I know a lot of people may feel that all of that "goes without saying" - but like Gillian Anderson can, apparently, attest to - well, she apparently had some problems when she sold her house in London. Stevie and the Real Estate Professionals working for her deserve not to. This is a business transaction for them, and it's how they earn their living.

This is a house she has had since 1981? Then why does the Arizona Living (http://www.nicksfix.com/article_arizona_living_sep_1983.htm) article from 1983 say she sold a Scottsdale house?

"Why did you sell your Scottsdale home?

Because I was never there. And you know what it's like to air condition a big house there. I kept it for a long time and when I went there it was wonderful. I wrote "Bella Donna," "Edge of Seventeen" and several of my most favorite songs in that living room. So it was very creative for me, going to Phoenix, but why have a beautiful home there when you have to be in Los Angeles all the time? And then I'd go home for one day and my parents would be kind of down if I didn't come to see them, so it just didn't work out very well."
I had also not heard anything about Chris and Lori divorcing. Was there some article on this?

P.S. It would be funny to make a compendium of all the times throughout the decade when she stated her intention to make the Rhiannon movie, autobiography, coffee table book, children's book, etc. I have a biography of Petula Clark that was published in like 1983, and at the end of it, the book informs the reader of Petula's intention to create an original musical on Broadway. Well, Saints preserve us, Petula actually did this a few years later! If only Stevie had actions to go along with her words.

I'm doing well. One of the realtors I work with (I'm a mortgage broker, I don't know if you know, that's why I was teasing you) showed our client 47 properties. She backed out of two contracts in the last month, one well past the inspection objection. It seems like lately, there have been a lot of kooky buyers in this market. How is the market in LA these days? LA doesn't seem like it would be a bubble market to me. Here, it all depends on what area you live in (in the metro area). There are certain areas that are holding their own and appreciating and other areas where the foreclosure rate is going through the roof. Also, I run into a lot of prospective refi clients who don't have enough equity in their homes to do anything about it. :distress:
Anyway, I digress. I hope everything is going well with you and your family. :xoxo: Also, it's pretty smart of you to do the gift basket business. As we both know, the holidays are the slowest for real estate.

Very true. I just listed and sold a property in Studio City. It is a expensive area..close to CBS & Universal. Both businesses are doing really well. I am lucky - I have a good balance for both businesses. I am having a blast too.
I just listed a 2 Million Tuscanny Estate in Studio City. Who knew we are in the same biz pretty much.;)

I don't think there was ever an article, but several fans who met Lori & Waddy & some other band members in Vegas 12/05 (06?) heard about it at that time. Not sure if they were just separated at the time, or if they've divorced since, or what. But they apparently are no longer together.

The internet is a scary place... based on the little bit of information posted on this thread, I now know her address in Paradise Valley  . I kinda pictured her living way up in the hills on a secluded cliff... but it looks like she is packed into some ritzy tract home subdivision full of McMansions. Still... what is Mama doing with 7.5 bathrooms? One for every day of the week?

Anyway, here is some information from the public domain. I just love stuff like this; it makes her seem more like one of us somehow... except she is the one with the four-digit electricity bill in the summertime. But her property taxes aren't too bad at all...

^Now that goes to show how f'ed up our property taxes are in Indiana. The year before we bought our house, last year, the property taxes were MORE than those listed on Stevie's property. They are now just a few grand less. And, our house has 2600 sq ft. as opposed to 7300. AND, it is way, way, way less than 3.8 mil.

WTF Indiana?
