Where is this from?
Sounds promising. Is it from Vanessa's new album?
I have a feeling Stevie has been recording and we'll get some new material soon!

What was all that gibberish about 'The One'? I didn't understand half of it because there were too many people screaming. Did V say something like you end up spending your entire life with someone that isn't The One, and The One could be someone you were with when you were 15? And Stevie chimed in saying "you may be my love but you'll never be my love, it's so universal"? Okay, that last part I am not even questioning, because who else but Stevie says those things.

She had Lasik back in '94 but as you get into your 40's a lot of people need glasses that magnify the print. Over the last year or so my vision has changed so that it's hard for me to read things close up. And I wear contacts and have 20/200 vision uncorrected.

But it seems odd to me that you would wear contacts when you are only nearsighted, and since Stevie had her eyes corrected more than a decade ago, that's all she would need.

Stevie may have had her eye's corrected but I still don't think she can see too well. She trips over too much stuff. She probably could wear contacts all day and improve her vision. I seriously do not think she just needs them for reading......although she obviously is far more nearsighted. I think she looks cute in her eye glasses but I am not a fan of the frames she has been sporting lately.
I am still dying over her moaning in this song. It sounds like ****. Vanessa is extremely talented though and has a gorgeous voice.

OMG, Can it be? Stevie is stepping out of her comfort zone. ;)
You have to admit that was a treat. Granted you can't hear Stevie all that well, and hey, she just learned the song not that long ago and it looked like it was impromtu sort of. I have to give Stevie a lot of credit for that.
And I am sure it will sound much better and richer and fuller on the recorded version. I for one will buy the CD just for that song. You can really tell that Stevie has taken Vanessa under her wing and wants to support her. That says a lot. Not too many singers do that now days that I am aware of.
Yay! Stevie back in the studio. Maybe this will be the start of some new stuff down the road.

Ok, I reread the thread and Sparky posted that Vanessa joked that Stevie tossed the cd and her ipod into the pool. The cd. So, if Stevie actually sang on the cd, she would know some of the words I would think. I am not getting why people think she is on the recorded version. Stevie showed up at gigs and sang with Sheryl Crow on songs, and was not on the recorded version of them.

Once you have the laser surgery on your eyes, you cannot wear contacts again. The contacts won't have the right fit. The procedure removes thin layers of tissue in order to reshape the eye. Enough tissue must be left in place, so that if you get cataracts when you are older, they can correct it. Also, you can cause blindness if you take off too much.

Yikes. Just plain awful. What's really sad is Stevie is out there with her glasses and sheet music to simply grunt and rib-et. She may have mustered the words 'The One' at the end too.
But then it is so hard to memorize a couple grunts being a busy celebrity. So lame.

It reminds me of the moans she used to do in the 70's a la Green M. in like 1975.
It does sound very much like that. It's weird how she can still sound like 30 something years later. Those little moments never cease to amaze me. This is kind of OT but along the same line. I was watching Classic Albums on VH1 and Elton John sat at his piano (recently) and sang the first verse of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in it's original key. I got the shivers. Of course he then stopped playing, laughed and said he can't sing it that way anymore because it's so high. It kind of reminded my of those rare moments when I hear Stevie's voice today and recognize something from 25-30 years ago. I remember back when I saw her on the Whole Lotta Trouble tour and she was singing Talk To Me and I thought she wasn't gonna go for those big notes toward the end of the song. You know, the part where she goes
I can see your expression when the phone rings
And I can see that you're thinkin' bout the same things
Is it all that hard
Is it all that tough
Well, you've taken all there is now baby
Isn't that enough
and she totally nailed it. I was stunned and elated.

Vanessa says in another video from a previous night that this song was written by Linda Perry and Steven Jenkins.
Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind? Isn't/wasn't he her boyfriend? Thank you for the mp3 by the way. :)

That makes sense. One of the blog postings in the other thread mentions him as Vanessa's "long-time beau," but other than that I have no idea. I still get Vanessa confused with Michelle Branch, and if I hear "Semi-Charmed Life" one . more . frikkin' . time ...
And you're welcome. I just checked the sendspace link, and it seems to be working again.

after seeing it again, I'm starting to look forward to the real version. I think they're cute together, and maybe VC is a shot in the arm for Stevie. I love the fact that Stevie comes out in gigantic bifocal glasses, and sheet music...out of her element...and just does it. Very cool.

And now Stevie is going swimming with Vanessa?
Alright, now I'm jealous of those two swimming together! Vanessa's the lucky bastard. lol.

I totally agree...she looks envious in the black & white photo...
I don't. I think 's poignant and that she looks like she's reflecting on the women musicians thriving in part because of her legacy. I think her support of these artists shows her class. And at least she picks the ones that write their own songs and not the Britney's or "Idol" types.

Yes, I am aware of all that. And I know they have varifocal contacts also. But it seems odd to me that you would wear contacts when you are only nearsighted, and since Stevie had her eyes corrected more than a decade ago, that's all she would need.
I'm not sure why you think it's odd. I have had contacts for nearsightedness for over 20 years. I'm sure it's quite common.

It is. That's what I was trying to express in in earlier post, that even though I wear contacts that correct my nearsightedness, I still have to wear reading glasses over the contacts to read. I thought my optometrist (who's like 30) was just being snarky a few years back when he asked my how old I was. When I told him 40, his immediate response was that soon I was going to see some changes in my vision and would probably want to get a pair of reading glasses. Hmmph. About six months ago, to my horror I realized that I couldn't read the fine print on labels anymore whether I held them far away or up close.  Then I realized my optometrist wasn't being snarky at all, just warning me of the inevitable. So I bought myself some reading glasses. I'd bet that this is the case with Stevie as well.

Sounds good. I picked up an mp3 alternate version of "Talk To Me" from some Time/Life Edition compilation. Does anybody know if it's an alternate vocal? Sure sounds like it, but maybe the synths just draw my ear to different parts of her singing.
I have that version and the beginning is different. There is no timpani at the beginning. Also if I remember correctly, the I can see you running part at the end is a little more prominent? My guess is the record company sent a different take to Time/Life without realizing it. Or maybe Stevie wanted that one to get out because she liked it better? In any case, we got a nice little bonus. I always put this version of Talk To Me on my mix CD's.

I know that most people that wear reading glasses for nearsightedness can't see anything beyond 3 feet in front of them when they're wearing them. I was just wondering if contacts had the same effect and would therefore be required to be taken out everytime you stop reading. :wavey:

Envious of what? A singer who will never reach the heights Stevie has reached? I don't think so.

I am not getting why people think she is on the recorded version. Stevie showed up at gigs and sang with Sheryl Crow on songs, and was not on the recorded version of them. :confused:It's been everywhere that Stevie's going to sing background vocals on this song on Vanessa's new album... EVERYWHERE.

I liked the improptu feel of it, everytime Stevie sings backing vocals she gives me great emotions, I'm looking forward to the recorded version. I don't get what's so wrong in this performance (luckily, or I'd be worried) as all the glasses fuss, she looks great with them, IMO.

It does sound very much like that. It's weird how she can still sound like 30 something years later. Those little moments never cease to amaze me. This is kind of OT but along the same line. Yea - Elton is WAAAYYY lower these days, but he, like La Nicks, can still shine it on brightly when he takes a notion.

Vanessa says she added harmony to the song...not that it was a duet..which is why I asked as well.

Funny you mention that Chris, I was watching that pro shot concert from that tour and I was thinking the same thing about Talk to Me. She really nailed that one.

Nah. they're just like wearing glasses except you have better periferal vision and they don't slip down your nose. I wear mine most of the day, then take them out in the evening and wear my glasses until I go to bed. Next day, the contacts go back in.

Seriously! I do not like this song, but I don't like VC. And Stevie sounds like she's groaning when she goes "oooh, oooh, oooh" or whatever.
Negative stuff aside, Stevie looks great! :D And it's really cool that she showed at the Roxy.
I'm with you on not really caring for Vanessa.....she sounds like a little kid (I know, I know, she can't help it.....) and she completely lacks a vibrato; it just sounds like she's talking. When my friend and I saw Stevie in 2005 at Coors, I felt bad because very few people were even half listening to VC when she opened for Stevie. Kim and I just sat there politely, but almost everyone around us was getting up, walking around, talking amongst other concert goers...taking phone calls, etc......she's boring, I'm sorry. However, I do think she is a great song writer...just not the greatest singer or entertainer.
Oh well...they both did look great......
