SO I've decided I want to get a Daschsund. Pet shops are off limits. I dont really care about papers so much cause I know that jacks the price up pretty good. What should I do?

You can look in the paper and see if anyone is selling one, but since they're purebreds, it's pretty much going to cost you. Here is a link to a Dachshund rescue page. You could look into that. Keep in mind that this breed is NOT a solitary dog at all. They suffer from severe separation anxiety. My husband had one years ago. You cannot leave this breed home alone all day while you're at work.

Forgot the link- here you go: http://dachshund-rescue.org/index.php

that is very, very true. i recently dogsat for a very busy family that had a dachshund, and the dog was miserable. he was left alone for hours and hours every day while everyone was at school/work and he was extremely anxious & angry. sad.

Yes, dachsunds definitely are not solitary dogs. Anyone I know that works has always bought two so that they can keep each other company.

I also would highly recommend a rescue service.

Good Luck!

Maybe I could get a cat to keep him company? Is that a good idea. I guess I would be willing to pay for a purebred. I would want some assurances that its healthy. I've talked to some purebred services, and I guess I could afford about 600 or so

it would probably serve you to read up on them a good bit. go meet a couple and talk to people who already own them. in my experience, an inexperienced dog owner is a bad thing. be sure that you are willing and able to meet the needs of the particular breed you are looking at.

;) How are you going to go on Mac Lindsey road trips with a puppy?

My boss has a Daschund and they had to get another dog to keep her company. She was soo lonely at home all day and suffered doggie panic attacks when left alone too long. I would rescue a dog...there are soo many in need it is such a shame to buy one. I was at a Fourth of July parade yesterday and they had ten or fifteen doggies from the shelter there. Walking in the parade with "Please Adopt Me" jackets on. :distress: It was so upsetting but hopefully some of them got new homes yesterday. Shelter dogs are all vet checked, neutered or spayed and have all their shots. Less expensive and you are doing a good deed!

You should care very much about a dog's pedigree. If you buy one from a puppy mill, it likely will cost you thousands over the years. That is because they breed with no care for disease, lineage, etc. Thus, puppy mill dogs are far more vulnerable to medical problems. So, you get what you pay for. Moreover, supporting a puppyu mill is a horrible thing in that if they have no business, they cannot force their unethical bredding habits on these poor creatures who have no choice in the matter. Puppy mill breeders should be jailed IMO.

LOL my Aunt and uncle are the top Samoyed breeders in Minnesota. They'd mever let me get away with buying a puppy from a mill. But you are right. I guess I'll fork out the extra cash. I want a companion that will last a long time. I do have some experience with Dachsunds. Derek, my ex boyfriend and I had a dachsund and he was what made me want one wnhen we broke up. I just loved that litle ****! I was thinking about getting a cat for companionshp casue I love cats so much too

well, the prob with not having papers is that you have no way of knowing that the dog didn't come from a mill. :( i say go for a rescue :(

You are correct - anyone can register with the AKC and it is not really indicative of quality. And, the rescue people are very, very strict about the people adopting the pets - far more selective than most people buying a pet usually are. So, I say absolutely go for a rescue dog WAY before a puppy mill dog.

The thing is if you are not going to go the rescue route, then you have to do research. Doing that research will almost always save you time and heartache in the long wrong.

The thing is I've just decided that I would rather have a pet at this point in my life. I mean I've been around animals all my life, so I know how to care for them. Plus, a relationship with another guy just isnt what I want right now. I think I'm actually much happier being single.

yes, not every breed is the correct fit for every person. you have to do the research and make sure your personality/habits mesh with that breed's. and absolutely make sure you get papers. i used to work next door to a sham pet shop that sold purebred puppies without papers - those people were awful :distress:

well that's cool, just make sure you do your research & make sure you're ready to make a decade+ long commitment (financial & otherwise) to the dog. :)

It truly sickens me how some people breed their animals -- brother to sister, son to mother - 10 or 12 litters per bitch - no regard for congenital things like cramp --- then they get dogs with three legs or some other horrible defect and they kill them instantly and keep doing the same types of breeding.

it's awful, really awful. the pet shop i worked next to was TINY - maybe 20 feet by 60 feet - and they had cages of puppies stacked on top of each other, mini potbelly pigs, fish, rodents, kittens, and all sorts of pet supplies packed into that tiny space. my friend dragged me in there once and i refused to go back. :(

I wouldn't exactly say that dachshunds are not solitary dogs ... it all depends on the dog's personality. I have 2 dachshunds. The first one we had for 2 years before we got the second one. The first one is very much a loner. The second one has more of the doxie personality that you guys are speaking of .... goes nuts unless someone is around paying attention to him. But I really think it is the individual personality of each dog and not the breed. Dachshunds are great pets, I highly recommend them!!

Here's the little buggers sunning themselves. The black one is Otto, the chocolate one is Olana.

Well, when you stop and think about it, a pet will always love you unconditonally. Not so for a boyfriend.

but don't let that be your prime motivation for getting one.

i will second everyone who is saying do the research, think long and hard, make sure the breed and lifestyle is right for you. if you're getting a baby puppy, are you prepared for the housetraining? and the regular good manners training? can you take time off from work for its first week or two home with you? will you be able to be home to walk it, or let it out, on a regular schedule? you travel a lot - what will you do with the dog when you go? getting a dog as a single person is very different from having a dog with a second person or a family. all the responsibility is yours.

dachshunds also have lots of back issues. could mean vet bills.

i am not trying to discourage you, david. it's just that nothing breaks my heart worse than people who decide they need a dog. and they get one. and then realize they didn't really want a dog, they just liked the idea of it. dogs are a huge responsibility and a lot of work. but they are completely worth every single second of it - if you're ready for it.

i must say doxie's rule!!!~ my hubby had them all his life & when we got together, & moved in together, the 1st thing he got for me was a mini long-haired doxie, i named her weaner marie:D ~ we didn't have our son then & so we spoiled that dog so much, i took her everywhere, even to wrk w/ me~ in turn she worshipped us back & once when we went on a 3 day vacation, we had my mother-in-law come stay at our house w/ her, but she still made herself so sick from us not being there, she had to be hospitalized~ so from then on whenever we traveled we found a hotel that took pets~ she was the best dog~ when she was 13, she went to nip at an itch on her back & broke her own back & was paralyzed instantly~ we had to put her to sleep & that was 1 of the hardest things i have ever done~ i couldn't even think of having another dog for 3 yrs~ then 1 sunday i was reading the ads & saw that the same family that i had got weaner from had a new litter of doxie's these being short-haired mini's & let me tell you i couldn't get there fast enuf~ & i came home w/ a cute little female & named her sweeney lynn~
doxie's are fabulous companions, they have an attitude all their own & i wouldn't have any other dog~

for once i found my pet file, so pics to follow...

^ what cute kids!!

Yeah, doxies can have back issues. You just have to make sure they don't jump up on things, use the stairs, and most importantly, watch their weight. Many doxies end up paralyzed because they are too heavy - it's too much for their long back to handle. We've got our pups on strict rations and out vets chews us out something AWFUL if they are even a pound or two overweight!

But they are cute, loyal, and will love you FOREVER!! What more can you ask for?
