I know it's already in a thread further down, but the link to the file expired a long time ago. Can anyone post the audio version of the girls rehearsing the song "Wild Heart"? Would love to have a copy of that!

There are many clean copies on youtube. Not that you can't get it here though. I just find youtube a huge resource for Stevie stuff :D

That was actually shot while she was shooting the cover of Rolling Stone magazine for the release of Bella Donna. If you ever watch the entire shoot, you can hear that the melody is actually that of Can't Go Back.
Word on the street was Lindsey gave her the song and then took it back.

omg. it is. that has been plaguing me forever, thanks for clearing it up.
This may not be clean, but it includes Stevie singing along to "Love In Store." Not sourced from the UK OSOTM BBC special like the shorter version is.
One of my favorite Stevie moments: effortless, joyous, terrific harmonies.

I just found the version of this on YouTube last night and watched it about five times in a row. It's never been my favorite song of Stevie's, but for whatever reason, I was a mesmerized by the idea that in its early stages, it had the same backing melody as "Can't Go Back". I listened to the album version quite a few times as well and can barely pick out any similarities, but damn, the song sounds really awesome (and Stevie is completely adorable) in this little impromptu rehearsal moment!
Has there ever been any documentation that one song came from the other? Or is it one of those instances where you just really like a riff and build that riff into something else and it's not really considered a sharing thing? ETA - just saw the above comment about Lindsey Indian trading it, oops! Kinda wishing he hadn't at the moment!
Here's the link to the YouTube video for anyone who hasn't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keOBF5D1Pck

It isn't that it's the "same backing melody." It IS "Can't Go Back" -- probably before "Can't Go Back" was titled "Can't Go Back" & possibly even before "Can't Go Back" had lyrics (Lindsey sometimes writes his words last). The backing track here is Lindsey Buckingham, maybe even the others in Fleetwood, too. They were all working on "Mirage" in 1981.

Kinda wishing he hadn't at the moment!Stevie doesn't really write "riffs" or motives; she puts a chord progression underneath her already-existing "poetry." Stevie's using a backing track that Lindsey (& possibly the rest of Fleetwood) composed. My guess is that he had this instrumental track -- maybe created that year for "Mirage" or created earlier -- & she taped it (I doubt the band would have let her walk out of Larrabee with the master) for her own amusement or ideas. She wrote her "Wild Heart" words in a limo in New York in 1981. Heck, maybe she had even just written them on her New York trip during this very video. I think Annie Liebowitz did her Stevie shoot in New York because you have all those shots of New York streets in the Rolling Stone article. So maybe Stevie had just written "Wild Heart"! That's my story & I'm stickin' to it!:mad::thumbsup:

Gordon Perry co-produced that song with Jimmy Iovine and Sandy Stewart played on it. They may have helped Stevie out with the changes in the melody.

I believe she confirmed this in a radio interview done around the same time.

Thanks for the info.
I get fuzzy when it comes to timelines, so I wasn't sure if at the time, "Can't Go Back" was already on its way to being "Can't Go Back", or if it was just a demo of Lindsey's that Stevie liked and wanted to use, before it was decided that it was going to be a Mirage thing. At the end of that video, you hear the beginnings of "Wish You Were Here", so it seems like they were possibly listening to some demos that were in consideration for the album. That's what made me wonder how far along they were with the album and if Stevie was just starting "Wild Heart" on that melody at the time, to be developed more later. Both songs still being in the early stages of development makes more sense. I wish I could just write a song in a limo!

I wish I could just write a song in a limo!Fleetwood was probably pretty close to being done with the basic tracks, I would guess. By that point (September/October), they'd been recording "Mirage" for five or six months. So I suppose the album was probably in its OCD stage with the production & tracking (that's the stage where Lindsey keeps fiddling with things long after everyone else goes home for dinner). Stevie was running all over the country with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, who were on tour. She did fifteen or twenty guest spots at his shows from spring through late fall all over the nation, which probably means she had finished her session work for Fleetwood. (At least she thought so -- the others apparently felt that she was playing hooky. See the David Gans article "What's the Matter with Stevie?" in Record mag.)
You'd have to check, but I think Stevie told Jim Ladd in an Innerview in 1981 that she had just written the words to "Wild Heart," so it all pretty much fits the time line. But the audio on the photo shoot video is definitely an instrumental from the Fleetwood Mac camp, & she was using it for some reason. Maybe she thought it was pretty, the way she did with a lot of Lindsey's instrumentals.

I wish I could make out what she's saying to her makeup lady when "Can't Go Back" first comes on!
And sometimes I like to listen to the instrumental version of "Can't Go Back" that's playing in this and sing "Wild Heart" :-)

For the longest time I thought this video was taking place backstage of a Mirage concert while Stevie was being made up. It appeared to me that Stevie is singing Love In Store when Lindsey interrupts her with Can't Go Back, so Stevie says "Can you believe this ****? This is what I was telling you about." Then she goes on to sing her lyrics over his music. I thought it was a little cat and mouse game but now that I know he wasn't even there it's totally different. But it's kind of a funny idea.
