Such an emotional song from her fragile voice to the longing in her lyrics and then the softness of Ls guitar and voice. Wow very powerful stuff here. It is like they know ( or think so at the time) that this is their last song together.

Eh...
I, for one, was shocked when Stevie recorded Goodbye Baby (AKA The Tower) for SYW.
WISYA has always seemed like a throwaway to me.

definitely not a throwaway imo. I think it is one of her saddest songs. I wish people could put away their disdain for her vocal and the production and pay attention to the lyrics and the simplicity of the song. I think it's just as good as Storms.

I love this song. Even if you don't like the vocals, for me they're still perfect, because they add to the sadness and vulnerability of the song. All the 'whatsamattababee's are sung differently and I think it reflects the different feelings in the song, and the different circumstances in which somebody can ask you if you're alright. Maybe I've given this too much thought, but I never get tired of this song. Lindsey's unscripted part at the end kills me every time.

maybe? try clearly.
srsly, I agree 100%. it's his vocal at the end that gets me too. Stevie, in one of her lucid, creative moments, got that one perfect.

I think it's an okay song, but the bit with Lindsey at the end really makes it for me. It's the reason why I listen to it. I like the guitar solo as well because it's simple but fits really well.
Stevie's vocals annoy me a bit, but generally I don't mind them. It's only when I think about them that I really notice them.

i listened to this song just yesterday....sometimes, it just seems to fit the mood. I'll admit, Stevie's vocals were a little hard to get used to at first, but I've grown to love the "whassamatta baby"-s....

I consider the saddest song of Stevie's to be a demo referred to as Ooh Baby. Her voice is incredibly sad in it. It almost seems to be crying when she is singing.

Where would I find this song and the one called Oh Baby? Are they on a vinyl LP or are they demos?
(Sorry to be so clueless, but I got into this FM stuff last November. And if no one wants to take the time to explain it to my sorry ass I completely understand. )

When I See You Again is from Tango In The Night (1987)
This is the only song Stevie did with the mac that I don't like.

It's the only Stevie song on Tango in the Night that I like. Actually I love it. The vulnerability of her vocal, the sadness of the lyrics and LB's voice distant and questioning at the end absolutely make the song.
Although I do love Storms I've always thought it was a little contrived. This sounds from the heart.

Thanks Vanessa for posting it.
I have Tango on vinyl (thank you to some long lost Ebay seller around Christmas time) but haven't listened to it yet. This weekend when it is hotter than a pizza oven here in Denver, I will go to the basement and dig out the turntable, which is buried somewhere under the stairs...
Till then, I will enjoy the computer version you have so graciously shared with me! :D
Thanks Vanessa and WildHeart for your kindess is responding to me.

Actually WISYA is one of the only songs from Tango I didn't bother to purchase from iTunes [just when I got into FM]....I didnt get FM, WTTR...S, or WISYA. I'm Kindof warming up to WTTR...S, and FM is starting to be alright [youtube video...], but WISYA is not worth the dollar to me from what I can make out of the song. I might limewire it
It does sound sad, like the lyrics do [nicksfix/buckinhgamnicks.net], and her voice on the 30 second sample sound very child like, vaunerable. Ill have to check it out

When I See You Again is my fav FM song....It summarizes Stevie and Lindsey's relationship completely.
Remember she wrote this as she was going away to Betty Ford (the first time) for her coke addiction...
I think she was frightened to death !!!!
About her voice, her future , without drugs and cigaretts, her writing influences, you can feel very creative when you are high, and she was going away to give that up...What would happen to her? ...And mostly..
her Lindsey....
I think it's soul bearing, raw, incredible vunerable, frightened ,honest and just heart wrenching lyrics that she was completely feeling, when she wrote it. More than any other song she has written.
And her vocals were not great at that time, she was checking into Betty for a reason... and that is why she sounds so bad.
I mean think about if it were you.
You have been with the same man since you were 17, for good or bad- He has ALWAYS been there with her. And he keeps saying
"What's a matta baby? over and over-cuz he knows she is not his Stevie!, not in this state. She sings the lyric, but I think it is his question. So,
Now, she is leaving, and what if it's not the same when she comes back?,
will he still love her? will he still be her best friend? whether they are fighting or laughing, or whatever...at this point I think she still consideres him her best friend--------- Or will she have been replaced by another?
Hard lyrics to write, forget about sing without having emotion in your voice!
I also love the ending when Lindsey sings back to her while he is playing the accoustic guitar...It is so fitting- It is where they started and now they may be parting...
She says..."When I see you again, will it be the same?"
He says..."IF I see you again, will it be the same?"
Two very different questions.
This has always been my favorite soing to discuss (besides Frozen Love) In reality I think it is only the 2nd song they sing lyrics back and forth to each other....I could talk about this song all day...I love the intensity
Anyone else?

It was recorded before she checked into rehab right?

WISYA is so tender and sad, it's brilliantly understated on the album, I think.
And for me as well, it's Lindsey's part at the end that really gets me!!
It's the lyric change from "When I see you" to "If I see you" that's so tragic. I wonder whose idea that was, Stevie's or Lindsey's?
I think this alternate mix is better than the album version, though; the way the voices blend at the end and kind of answer each other just fits the whole thing better and brings out that sadness, in my opinion.

Actually, Mirage is the last album of the Rumours line up that I really love. Apart from the bad sound quality on the CD version (the vinyl version is much better) it's a fantastic album, let down only by "Oh Diane". It's worth it just for Stevie's songs. I think in terms of her Fleetwood Mac material, Tusk and Mirage were her best moments with the band. WISYA...no! I think I've played it...twice..and I don't like it. I never liked it. It's the only song that Stevie did with the mac that I don't like.

I am in the camp that loves this song. Yeah, Stevie's vocals aren't the best, but that sort of adds to the song for me, drives the sentiment home a little harder. And Lindsey at the end kills me. The sound of HIS voice, especially after hers in the shape its in, just makes the song all the more moving to me. It makes me wonder who's idea it was to have Lindsey come in at the end like that.

It makes me wonder who's idea it was to have Lindsey come in at the end like that.
Stevie said it was her idea:
"That's one of my favorite things. I made him sing with me. I said, 'Lindsey, you're gonna sing on all my songs whether you like it or not. You have to sing this with me. So we went out and sang 'If I see you again, will it be over?' We sang it in unison, then I snuck in and took my voice off. Otherwise, I'd have never gotten him to do it. See, Lindsey's pretty shy and he's singing differently there than he is on anything else on the record. He wouldn't think to do that: to sing on my song at the end. He would think to sing with me, but he wouldn't want to end it. But that's what I wanted, to leave people feeling they are really talking to each other."

I love WISYA. The sad, quavering voice, and the 'whatsmatta babys'. Lots of times, when I am very depressed, if some asks me "what's the matter?" I will just lose it. It's like, "Please don't ask me how I feel, or what's the matter, because it's all too much right now, and it hurts too much.."
My mom, many years ago, once told me that she herself felt that way, and 'understood' when I got in those dark places. She would never ask me "what's the matter", instead she'd try to make it better. And she told me "I know what it's like, when someone asks you what's wrong and you feel like falling apart". I love my mom..
Anyway, back to WISYA. It is (to me) the last of the old Stevie. I don't know when it was recorded compared to WTTR...S or SW or any of the other TITN tracks, but it is the last Stevie track on the album so in effect it ends the whole Stevie era. And it drifts off...slowly, and Lindsey's vocal and guitar...slowly fading into the distance...until they are no longer visible. Then, they're gone. "Again and again...over and over..."
End. Roll credits...end of an era.

about the song...absolutely love it! I never understood all the negativity...I think the 'ravaged' vocal on it suits the song perfectly...I do think it's one of Stevie's saddest songs (along with, of course, Storms...) But THE saddest song has to be Planets Of The Universe, or as it was originally known, NO LIGHT... which basically says it all for me...There is no hope...of course, when it finally did see the light of day on TISL, it was given a modicum of hope...but that one still gets my vote...
I always think of The Second Time as a sort of a sequel to WISYA...I love them both ...

But THE saddest song has to be Planets Of The Universe, or as it was originally known, NO LIGHT... which basically says it all for me.Do you have No Light? I want that so badly. It's one of the things missing from my collection. All of the Planets demos I have are different than the one I'm looking for. I'm looking for the piano ballad. At the end she says, "That is so intense". There is one that has really good audio quality, and I've been dying to find it. I agree that it's one of the saddest, and one of my favorites. I would really appreciate it if someone could post a download link. :blob2:
I'm particularly struck by the sadness of these lyrics in No Light:
Now I know I was wrong
To live for a dream
If I had my life to live over
I would never dream
I would never dream.....

I agree. I also think that the song is a collaborative effort in that CM's paino (synth) part contrasts nicely with the vocals of La Nicks and LB. John and Mick are in there too, though it is subtle.
My only beef with the song is the repetition of the word baby - half as much would have been less grating to these ears.

THIS. was/is so true. And I compleetley identify with what you have said. When things are really bad, it can seem like all you are hearing from people is whats the matter, whats the matter, whats the matter whats..........
and its like, please dont ask me that, i will fall appart. thats when i got past the reppetittion in the song by feeling thats EXACALLY what is going on in that story there as well.

I read your entire description months ago and loved it as well. THis part is my favorite. because yes, the questions are different. there is so much longing in this song and a sense of things will never be the same.......
Its beautiful and tragic and so in the moment that you can really feel it.

I think Lindsey's Say Goodbye is sadder. The live version is reeeally nostalgic and it touches me far more than the album version. Some live Landslide versions were sang very sad too. And Songbird, live of course, when Chris thanks the city.. I remember NYC, 1997, she kind of break her voice in that moment.. really touching

^^ I agree that the live version of Say Goodbye is much sadder than the album version. You can actually hear the words because it's slowed down, and the guitar is much clearer.

If possible, would someone please repost the version of WISYA with both Stevie and Lindsey singing the end part? it was mentioned in an earlier post, and I'd love to hear it! Thanks in advance!
