Just an attempt to turn the board back to topic: MUSIC. I really get unhappy over here lately.

It looks like Lindsey is working on the plans for the new album, with the tourguys as a back up. What do you think;
- will he rework the songs he recorded with Rob Cavallo? We'll miss alot of rockfeel on f.i. Twist Of Fate and Shuffle Riff.
- will he keep some of the GOS-tracks like they are? (GOS, TOF, ShuffleRiff) leave some UTSlikesongs, like Got To Get Away (which he mentioned in an earlier interview) and record Given Thing, Steve's Riff, maybe Deep Dense with the touringband and maybe some new stuff?

I got a feeling he'll rework alot of things to capture the semi-acoustic feel of the tour.........

Well, considering how he has been in the past about repeating himself, let's HOPE he DOESN'T try to make Under The Skin II. If I was at the production desk, I'd try to convince him to 1) come up with NEW things with a more "electric rock" approach, and 2) finish off the "rocker" tunes from GOS like "Gift of Screws" & "Twist of Fate"; toss in one of his leftover Stones covers...preferably "Gotta Get Away"; give us a studio version of "My Little Demon", and finally, a completed "Deep Dense". Let's have the remainder of the GOS tunes "officially" released so that we all can finally rid ourselves of the guilt of owning them in the first place.

I hope he doesn't change the rock GOS songs to try and fit them in with a stripped down UTS type feeling because there's no way they could work. They're just too manic to work in that sort of setting.

Well, considering how he has been in the past about repeating himself, let's HOPE he DOESN'T try to make Under The Skin II.

I agree. I love UTS, but I don't want him to do another one. As much as I love the title track, Cast Away Dreams etc. I wouldn't want another album with lots of those stumming songs. If he tries to do the same style again then the songs will have to be even better than on UTS. If he repeats himself and the songs aren't better (not even as good as, they've got to be better) then it won't be accepted as well because people will have "heard it before" kind of attitude.

If he did UTS II then I can see the reviews now "While the echo-y, whispery vocals and the stripped down guitars on Buckingham's last album, Under The Skin, gave it a feeling of intimacy they don't work as well on [Insert album title]. Infact, one wishes that Buckingham had lived up to his reputation as a "visionary" and attempted a new style instead of sticking to the same one that gave UTS such favourable reviews. Clearly the Lindsey Buckingham who refused to follow a formula on Tusk is long gone." Okay, so that might be an overly cynical review, but you get my point. I'd no doubt enjoy UTS II, but I'd always feel disappointed he didn't try something new.

If I had to make a guess about the sound of this album I'd say it will be somewhere between UTS and OOTC in terms of style. More rocky, but still lots of the "stripped down" acoustic feel to it. That sort of album would be great.

To be honest, I'll probably be happy with whatever direction he takes, as long as he takes on and doesn't end up treading water stylistically.

Yeah, I think he will make a band-album with the modern-folk approach. As songs, TOF and Shuffle will fit in, but as productions maybe not. So I think he could rework them, and get them slightly more "transparent" by replacing some of the rythmguitar by acoustic strumming. I would hate it if all those manic leadlines would dissappear. Not to mention Mick's drumwork.

And, Chili, The fact that he's going to work with Brett, Neal and Wally will lead to another "style", or at least "approach", than on UTS. I just hope that he will have less "space" for, as he calls them, productionvalues. Only a more down-to-earth vocal style could lead towards something that differs completely from UTS.

Just an attempt to turn the board back to topic: MUSIC. I really get unhappy over here lately. unhappy? maybe so as your last "music" related thread was february?

I'm actually hoping Lindsey's next release is of the acoustic variety with the addition of the texas dvd. Then I am hoping for an electric mix on the next one. Lindsey has/will have more than one more cd to issue.

i say no to a studio version of my little demon. :distress:

yes to some of the other GOS leftovers.. namely, wear you down. i *love* that demo. it's so quirky.

i haven't found any indication in any of the interviews that he's even considering a UTS II. He's said from the start that the next one will be a rocker. and, i'd like to see where he talks about going into the studio with the tour band. i've missed this information somehow.

Well, I'm not the type of guy that constantly starts "musicrelated" threads that almost no one responds to, just to keep himself happy. I just get very annoyed by the gossipthreads about individuals at concerts.

Don't feel attacked dear, you're one of the few reasons I'm still around over here and you know it. I'm just entitled to feel unhappy with the loss of activity by Madformac, Mari, Gaius, Trackaghost, Stefan, Wondergirl, Seteca etcetera. Well, as long as I can follow Lindsey's tour through you lucky guys, there's a reason to stay. I'm just flabbergasted by the attention every gossipthread gets.

Now, BTFLCHLD, give us your vision on the new album, your hopes, your wishes, your thoughts.

Because it was on The Dance. Same reason I didn't want BTLH on SYW. I know it's technically a "live" album, but as polished as The Dance is, I almost consider it a studio album.

Sarah, In one of the threads about the recent shows, Brett told to a fan that They were working on the next album and that he had heard some of the stuff and he ranked that as great.

Lindsey told around the release of UTS about that the next one would be a rocker, but later on he nuanced it and said something like we'll have to see where that one is going, because of the critical acclaim of UTS. I don't keep track of sources, I read them when they pop up, but I'm not collecting. I guess on lindsey's site you can find alot of articles that contain blurbs about the next album.

He's already mentioned quite a few times this is going to be more of rock approach, most likely including the tracks the record company would have liked to have seen on UTS and which Lindsey wisely kept off. I'm not sure about Twist of Fate, since he didn't seem to even remember the track when someone asked him about it a few months ago, but maybe the name got changed in the mean time. I think I would cry if it didn't get included, because of the remaining GOS tracks, that one is my favorite.

He also mentioned he came up with some new material in the meantime, so I guess we can expect a mix a la UTS, only with a different musical style this time.

Can't wait. :D

I completely agree about Twist if Fate. He needs to include that and Shuffle Riff...I would be happy. And not to be too greedy, if he wanted to include a cover song, I even love Gotta Get Away. :)

I have so enjoyed UTS and I still will for a long, long time. It's an incredible piece of art, but on this next album, he needs to rattle some windows.

Now, BTFLCHLD, give us your vision on the new album, your hopes, your wishes, your thoughts. I see Lindsey issuing either the texas dvd alone or with the additional cd. It wouldn't jell well to release the UTS dvd with a CD that sounds completely different or out of place. If the texas dvd is released alone, then it would be best to do so asap (imo.) My hope is issuing the dvd as he spoke of on rockline (issuing the dvd with the next cd) and then moving onto another release. My wish is that, whatever he decides to do, he again tours to kick my ass (along with the euros and canucks!) My thoughts are as above. I'm very excited that Lindsey is working on giving us more and shall patiently await his gift to us.

You know I'm going to express an unpopular opinion here but at this point I actually don't want the "big rock" album from Lindsey, I want something even more lo-fi. I want him to do a Paul Westerberg and release something like Folker - real loose and no frills, recorded in his bedroom/bathroom/whatever stuff.
I know last year he gave us his version of the acoustic album (which in reality wasn't that acoustic at all) but I just want something way simpler from him. I know you guys are probably thinking Tusk, and in a way I am too, but I'd like it to be way more spontaneous than that - which is something he loves to talk about (hilariously enough in rehearsed speeches) but boy can he not do.
I can't imagine we'd ever get the Neil Young approach from him - rehearse it once, record it while it's still fresh, with one take to capture the magic - but I can dream can't I?
The thought of him returning to something super-polished and produced depresses me. The fact that he mentions he listens to Thom Yorke and then goes and guests with the likes of Vanessa Carlton and the dreadful Little Big Town (there I said it, they really, really suck) makes me sad. I really think he's better than that.
Maybe I'm being a complete snob about it, I don't know, he could surprise me. The Mac is dead, Christine has retired, Stevie is a nostagia act: I'm just pinning my hopes on Lindsey shunning the popular vote for the artistic one.

Seeing the Mac is dead anyway, he can do that after this one.

I totally agree. The thing is, will he ever have the confidence to make it more barebone in "style"? He still looks at himself as a stylist. And that means that he always wants to play with the production. On the other hand, in one of the latest radio-interviews he said that he gained confidence as a writer. Let's hope he'll translate that into a less produced and more down-to-earth sound. I don't hold my breath for it although his current tour must have underlined that his vocal abilities have matured and gained character. Belt them out raw, Lindsey.

No, you're probably right, it just seemed for a while like everyone was super excited about the prospect of this big guitar-wailing, rock album he's apparently going to release, where I wouldn't mind him going even further with the sound he cultivated on UTS.
Not that I'm totally against something rawk, but I'd just like that to be simpler and more stripped down too, you know, just a guitar, bass and drums, although in a way I'm asking Lindsey not to be Lindsey here - the man loves to produce! I guess we can only wait and see.

We've said this before Gerald, but Lindsey needs to work with a producer who will battle him on these things, who will say "Leave it as it is, the songs sounds good without any frills!". Don't get me wrong, I do love Lindsey's production work, but the one thing we haven't got from Lindsey at this point is something bare bones in style - I would have thought that in itself would be a challenge he might enjoy undertaking (although he needs to leave the vocals alone!).
That said, didn't his record company want a more rock album over an acoustic one? So I can't imagine we'll get what I'm talking about.

Still, even if it IS going to be a rock-album, he can choose for a stripped down straight fromtheguts rocksetting, a fourpieceband like he performs with right now. I mean, he can sound very down-to-earth fragile-but-ballsy with these guys. The bootlegged Turn It On, IKINW and SHN prove it. I'd love to hear a folkrockalbum in this "Live"-style. Including the raw vocals.

I bet Gaius will respond soon with a remark about pre-recorded or sampled tracks that he uses in the live-mix...

I don't want a super-produced album either. Stripped down rock, as has been mentioned here already, is what I'd like most and also what I expect most from him at this stage. I'd guess there will be some lead guitar, but no massive wailing solos. I'd be shocked if we got something like Murrow or Come on the new one.

Well, since Mr. Buckingham has already said in interviews from last year that the next album was going to be an electric guitar record, whereas UTS was an acoustic guitar record, I believe him. I'm actually very much looking forward to that next album.

I'd love to hear quite a few of the "Gift Of Screws" sessions included in there, and all the work of his that he recorded with producer Rob Cavallo has turned out to be good material, so let's hope he brings Mr. Cavallo back.

"Twist Of Fate" (even though it might be titled differently) has classic rock radio all over it - most likely he's filled the ba-ba-ba-part at the end with real lyrics by now. Same goes for "Deep Dense", which is my pick for 1st single of the remaining GOS material. "Given Thing" is then 3rd in my line for inclusion on this disc.
As far as the Riffs are concerned, "Shuffle Riff" is a pretty dramatic and pretty effective tune, and I hope he has already finished it. "Steve's Riff a/k/a Wear You Down" is also pretty effective, but somehow, I think it would work better as a duet with Stevie in a Mac setting.
And "Gift Of Screws" would be OK to be included, too, but not at the expense of newer, more melodious material.

Those GOS demos that were the most fully produced at the time they were bootlegged, have now all been released, so I'm more curious at the time about the new songs that haven't been bootlegged so far!

It's about as likely as my wish of Lindsey making an album of pure Detroit techno 20 years after the fact. :]
The thought of him returning to something super-polished and produced depresses me.
The thought of him making a simple acoustic album depresses me. He already does enough of the stripped down thing when in concert, and Lindsey has always made sure that his live sound differs enough from the studio versions. Some UTS live tracks were a bit too close to their studio counterparts though.

A polished album wouldn't worry me, because we all know that a polished Lindsey album always has emotions raging behind the surface. I find that more fascinating than just doing a stripped down confessional album (or an album of pure sugary polish).

As for working together with his touring band, he already tried that after the OOTC tour and obviously didn't like the results. It might work this time though, because they're all essentially extra studio/touring hands who probably won't prevent Mr. Ego from doing his thing. And Lindsey's not the same he was in 1993 either.

The thought of him making a simple acoustic album depresses me.

Why? We've had numerous albums from Mr Buckingham showcasing his production skills but only one semi-acoustic one (and as I've said that wasn't really an acoustic album in my book, the vocals in particular featured plenty of studio trickery).

If you read back I also said I would quite like a rock album, just a more stripped down rock album. I just would like to hear something that isn't over-produced. I don't see what's depressing about that, in fact I'd say it would be rather refreshing him releasing a basic rock record at this point. I personally would find it fascinating to see if he could actually pull that off.

Without being murdered, and in light of La Nicks recent comments about never doing another Mac album... Can we PLEASE get Twist of Fate turned into a duet for this album? One last hoorah for BuckinghamNicks in the studio.

Wouldn't actually mind if he shelved the whole thing and actually remastered BN, or even, given some guidelines (set by us), make BNII.

me too. i'm not all that into the idea of buckingham nicks to be perfectly honest. that was a long time ago as lb says himself but i also like seeing lb coming into his own & being at least moderately successful by music industry standards. i'd like to see another cd (a rocker) by him alone that totally blows everyones minds & i can actually see that happening. for some reason, stevie became fleetwood mac & not because she's a better singer or songwriter. there's no rhyme or reason. lb was overshadowed & another bn release will most likely result in history repeating itself. the casual fans will go to see stevie. i'd like lb to continue on his solo path after his hit-&-misses & finally get the kudos, the respect & the attention he has always deserved. even if i weren't a fan, i still can't deny that he is more talented than the public gives him credit for or acknowledges & i feel a lot of that is still untapped. lb just needs to let go more & let it shine. a bn reunion i feel would push him back down. i see it as a step backward, both literally & metaphorically. maybe after they're both retired with nothing more either wants on their own. then, no harm no foul. but for now, lb needs to stay on his own.

I agree, gerald, on the live bit with the shows...and actually the idea of Lindsey releasing a LIVE UTS cd with the LIVE TEXAS dvd is very, very appealing. Having said that, whether Lindsey decides to do acoustic, electric or a mix on the new cd is, of course, up to him; however, either way, I want his hands/ears firmly in place producing his sound. The way he begins his work and brings it into something all together else is what I find mad appealling about his music... fascinating even. This is his time and he's finally taking it and and hopefully doing as much as he can/wants to with it. We all know he will never gain the spotlight like Stevie has but he's got something going right now and it's picking up speed...even if it's just little by little. After the DVD release, another new album who knows the possibilities. More music? More touring? I hope he gives himself a few more years to just be a solo artist honestly.

Do you think Lindsey recorded some more tracks on the road on that mobile 16-track that asked for a rock-treatment, so he kept them away from UTS??

Or did he write during the stops in this tour?

Well, you know this thread is for speculation-no solid answers asked!
I think he actually recorded bits and pieces of riffing and hooks during the SYW tour too. He MUST have been inspired by the heavy rockpieces he did night after night, even if they were automaticpilot for a big part. He really enjoyed them. And- when he's on a creative flow I can't imagine that he's just fingerpicked his head off on the acoustic-only. A real painter gets all sorts of fill-in-ideas and -impulses. I bet he's been playing/recording those sketches too.

I bet he can't help but mess around and create while he’s on the road. To me, the energy of the gigs on a whole (the audience and a great band backing you up) would be fueling creativity offstage (especially for a more rock oriented album). He always seems to be attached to his guitar. But, in recent interviews he has commented on loving the response with UTS so much and possibly wanting to explore that more “stripped sound/style” further. In the last interviews I’ve heard/read, he just doesn’t sound too sure about the rock concept anymore. It seems very iffy to me. I don’t know if he realized we fans were going to love UTS so much and respond so positively (of course we know he hoped so)…the sister rock album was his safety net. Now he’s gotten a little more confidence…some wind under his wings. Now we just have to see where it takes him.

I won’t lie…I want that rocking CD, but I won’t be depressed if it isn’t.

On a different topic...I hope the Texas DVD has some excellent special features. I know they filmed interviews with him, but who knows what made it on there. I would love to see a sound check or behind the scenes even if it's for that one show. At least we have that to look forward to while waiting for his next masterpiece. :woohoo:

The Mac is dead

Long live, Fleetwood Mac.

If Stevie doesn't want to do another Fleetwood Mac album, I have no qualms about her calling it a day with the band. I can easily see Mick & John just joining in with Lindsey's current touring band and calling it Fleetwood Mac. Or, if Lindsey wants to keep the direction he's going and not wanting to be under the Fleetwood Mac umbrella anymore, I can see Mick & John reforming Fleetwood Mac with Billy & Rick. Actually, at this point, I'd almost prefer an all-male Fleetwood Mac again.

Do you think Lindsey recorded some more tracks on the road on that mobile 16-track that asked for a rock-treatment, so he kept them away from UTS??

Or did he write during the stops in this tour?
About as solid answer as we'll get was in the Spartanburg Herald Journal interview in March (or one of them anyway, we all know how repetitive they were):

Q: You already have a follow-up coming out next year?

A: Yeah, I've already decided to carve out this time of doing two albums in a row rather than waiting so long in between. I'm still writing some new things … a lot of people sort of think it's going to be a rock (album). I don't know if it will actually be that or not. It kind of depends on how everything feels as we go along.

Anyway, can't see him releasing the album early next year, but probably later. He may have gotten his head out of his ass slightly, but this is still Lindsey we're talking about. ;)

wow, we may get his one on time. it might be finished which would explain the holdup for uts. two going at once which might also explain the extensive touring & on stage, saying the next one is coming in the fall. no worries about getting back in the studio to push out another one. pretty smart

I'm all for that. I'd love to hear Lindsey with Mick and John. If he does the more rocking CD next, then having Mick and John on the tour for that would be perfect.

I don't know any of the post-Rumours stuff yet (getting round to it, but I have to put food ahead of music, sadly) but if Mick and John tour anywhere near me with Fleetwood Mac I'll be going to see them, regardless of who they're playing with. I've seen very little of the stuff they did with Rick and Billy, but it's more interesting to me than Nicks would be.

THAT was the quote I was looking for. I knew he nuanced the rock idea for the next album. And here it is.

And ChiliD: Mick John Lindsey. That's MY Fleetwood Mac. Will it ever see the light? Maybe it's closer than ever. I say: Get your asses in the studio: we want a new FM-album!

we want a new FM-album!

As long as it's that FM. Personally, if it has Stevie on it I don't really wanrt it. A Lindsey solo album has much more appeal to me since I'll get more of his songs and I have little interest in Ms. Nicks (and she seems to have little interest in FM). I do think SYW has some of her very best work on it but since she has said she didn't like it we are unlikely to get anything similar this time.

you're right. I meant that. only an FM-album from the three guys. well maybe that's possible with the new stevie-mindset...

Let's hope. I'd love to get some more of John and Mick's stuff on Lindsey tracks.

I wonder what Lindsey has decided to do.

As for the immediate future, Buckingham expects to deliver another solo album early next year -- which may or may not be more rock oriented. A press release by his record label, Warner Brothers/Reprise, intimates as much, but Buckingham is not so sure. "I start to feel that maybe to just jump back to something more 'normal' is not really what I want to be doing," he said. "There was kind of a push-pull with Warners early on where they did not want me to put out 'Under the Skin' in the form that it is. They actually wanted me to throw in a bunch of rock tunes and make it a normal album, whatever normal means -- but not to commit to keeping it as under-presented as it kind of is. And I thought they were sort of missing the point. "So some of that comes from them, too, you know, sort of wanting to get back to what they think I should be doing. But I don't know. Whatever it is, I'm not saying it will or won't be one or the other. My tendency is right now to think that it probably shouldn't just be a straight-ahead album. And some of the information about it being that may even come from Warner Brothers at this point, cause that's probably what they would like to see. But screw them!" Daily Herald 04-16-2007

Some of these ideas, while intriguing, don't make much sense when it gets down to the brass tacks...

- Lindsey solo at this point in his life especially, will never make the moola that record companies need for him to make in order to continue forking out the bucks to release records.

- The Mac is not "dead" as far as the name and their sales go - the sales may have dwindled but they still sell more than LB ever will, hate to say it.

- Stevie not in FM? That's a joke. I mean some may not be huge fans of hers, especially if you're more into what LB does and the guitar thing, but come on - I highly doubt there will ever be another FM without SN. It will just cease to exist.

- Stevie had, hands down, the most successful solo career out of any FM member and can continue to have a bigger draw ($), which means that the other members need the FM machine to make any significant amount of $ and/or (LB) gain exposure to increase/keep any interest in their outside projects. Stevie, unless she's working on something I don't know about, is probably done with any more new solo albums.

- If LB plans on releasing more solo stuff then he 1. better get to it and 2. shouldl look into going independent.

However, if you look at his collaborations with Vanessa Carlton, Little Big Town (I love them), and Carrie Underwood, I would say that his management/label are doing a good job at exposing him to the new audience and good for them. It may not be the most artistic crowd, but it's the crowd that buys and if he's going to make any money to support that family and keep things pumping he's got to do that - art or no art. I bet'cha Stevie's told him that....she's no fool when it comes to being realistic on the state of the industry.

Personally, I want it all - new FM, new LB, new SN, FM tour, LB tour, SN tour - let 'em keep going til they really need to stop. I feel like SnL especially are in their prime right now. LB is playing better than ever and their voices are still very strong. I love their singing together so I would hope that if FM does fade out, LB would get some SN backgrounds on at least some stuff. Their harmony cannot be matched.

Edit: Another thought, they should consider marketing new stuff to country. Look at the Eagles. They've been pretty successful - top country album this year. Even if Mick and John were against it as far as using the FM name, a BN reunion to that market would be very successful, I bet. Afterall, the people who 'came of age' to FM in the '70's are probably the country listeners of today. It would be a good move, and maybe fulfill some "castaway dreams" of theirs from years past. If I was in their shoes and their age, I would go for it. If nothing else, it would be fun. If LB has any regrets about not trying the BN thing and Stevie is willing, this would be a great time to give it a whirl - they have really nothing to lose.
