View Full Version : The Other Side Of The Mirror Outtakes?

I remember Stevie stating in a 1989 interview to promote The Other Side Of The Mirror that she had written many songs for the album and that between her and the girls (Lori & Sharona), they whittled the list down to 21. Then Rupert Hine reduced the number to 17 tracks, all of which were recorded for possible inclusion.
Now we know that 12 tracks were released on the album and that Real Tears became a b-side but does anyone know what the other 4 songs were?
Stevie recorded Dial The Number, The Tradgedy Of One's Own Soul, Don't Treat Me Like A Stranger and Lily Girl with Kenny G in 1988 so I don't imagine these were among the 17 songs completed with Rupert.
I know that master reels for most of the album tracks plus the 4 Kenny G produced songs have surfaced in recent years but does anyone have any definite details of the 4 missing Rupert Hine produced songs?

I think Beautiful Ghost is supposed to be an OSOTM demo.

Thanks Vermicious. It just occurred to me that the album contained two covers (Cry Wolf and Blue Eyes) so I wonder if that means there were actually another 6 Stevie compositions that were recorded but never released?

If so, I'd like to get my hands on them.

I have a demo of a supposed mirror "out take" song called " Love Don't Fail Me Now"~ this may have been one that was supposed to be on the record.

It's so damn confusing to know for sure about the true history of Stevie's many unreleased songs. Through the years a lot of misinformation is perpeputated by well-meaning fans who catagorize as a demo or outtake from this or that era/album.

For example, look at the confusion between a demo and an outtake. The way I see it, a demo is usually a rough sketch of song presented for consideration to be professionally recorded. An outtake is usually a song (a demo) that makes it to the studio. Perhaps it is worked on and then abandoned (possibly revisited years later), or it was fully produced and then dropped from the running order --which then deems it an unreleased track. It's sometimes hard to tell the difference!

To add more to the confusion, some of Stevie's songs that were originally slated for Fleetwood Mac sometimes end up as solo songs (i.e. Planets Of The Universe).

With this thread, I am attempting to determine what would have been the professionally studio-recorded tracks that Stevie mentioned during the interview. I'm assuming that Cry Wolf and Blue Eyes were both later additions to the album as she did specifically say that she had written the 17 songs that were recorded. Therefore, I'm reckoning that there are up to six properly finished original compositions from the Mirror sessions that have yet to be released.
I had heard that Love Don't Fail Me Now was recorded during these sessions and it does sound similar to Stevie's voice of that late 1980's period. So that and Beautiful Ghost could well be contenders.
I would just love it if she were to issue these on a remastered version of the album. Foolish of me to hope I know...
