notice the first time Stevie sings "Stand Back, Stand Back" and we get that shot of that stupid spinning bassist, she isn't actually singing in the shot when we can clearly hear her. Also at the "la la la la la la la" bit we get a shot of the girls, they're not singing either. Who edited this? HOW did it get Stevie's approval and WWWHHHYYYYY the HELL is this widely available on DVD and White Wing Dove ISN'T??? Some explanations would be nice please Stevie.

Oh i know! Im so disappointed that the only Stevie nicks dvd you can get over here in Australia is this video of stevie live but filling 50% of it witha studio set up and studio dubbing! What a load of crap. Obviously she actually heard what she sounded like on that tour and saw what she looked like and said... hmmm my fans wont notice if i cut and paste all over and through it! I agree, what a shame that we cannot get something from the 81 or 83 tour. Why 86??? Oh dear, its just such a shame

It's funny because when this originally came out I thought it was great. Part of that is probably because this was the tour I saw and it was like having a record of it (at the time I had no idea bootlegs existed). But this video has not aged well at all. Stevie is so out of it and it shows. In a previous post I mentioned the US Fest and her being out of it on that one too, but this one is different. This one is more sad and embarassing than anything.
The editing is bad, all the close-ups (same deal with the Tango video) get old real fast. In my opinion the reason why the HBO concert is better is because it's as it happened. There may have been some tweaks here and there but nothing as obvious as what was done to the Red Rocks video.

The only good thing about this DVD is that it was filmed at the red rocks.... thats it.

oh now, it's not THAT bad. it is what it is. back in the 80's when it came out I'm sure you were all flipping your lid over it (I wouldn't know since I was 7 or 8 when it came out). looking at the way DVD's are done now it is very dated and it's obviously overdubbed and studiofied (I think I just made that word up), but don't dismiss the performances so easily.
it's got it's problems, but I still yank it out now and then and thoroughly enjoy it. dubs and all.

Still, with all its faults, there are still some great moments. BATB is as good as it gets and ranks up there with the all great performances by any female singer.
I like the way she strutts all over the stage at the begginning of this SB clip. I like her growling and squating during Edge.
Yes it is true the editing throughout this concert is very odd. For instance notice on this clip when Waddy is in the foreground there are moments when he is in motion but if you look at Stevie in the backround her image is frozen, how they do this in the same long shot is a mystery to me.

The strange editing is fun to watch. Considering what a Herculean task it must have been to completely makeover this concert, I think they did a great job of masking all of her erratic singing and behavior that night. From a fan standpoint, I would have loved to have seen this. But from a marketing standpoint, it would have been disasterous and Stevie's reputation would have tanked. I think Stevie and her management did a good job of hiding her addictions from the general public.

Agreed. I actually got this fairly recently, and I really enjoy it.

Come on people, have some willingness to suspend disbelief! :] I know it looks bad now, but it's still fun to watch and listen to. Personally, on Stand Back, I love when Stevie walks out right to the front of the stage and does 'The Snoopy.' When Snoopy dances, one thing he always does is he looks down at his feet, jumps in the air and lands and then kicks one leg out. Stevie doesn't do it exactly this way, but it's just funny watching her stomp her feet as she looks down at them just like Snoopy does.

I have _always_ wondered about this...!
I really like the editing on the Tango video, though. Yes, I know we have some more awful close-ups but they were at least slightly better done there than in this mess.
I think the editing in the Tango video lends itself a little better to the Stevie-ish atmosphere rather than just clean cuts from one shot to the next. There's more variety and more thought put into it than most, I thought.

I think someone posted an interview ages ago or a convo between someone and the people who edited "Red Rocks" and they mentioned what a pain in the ass it was to edit.

I actually love the Red Rocks video. There was something electrifying about it when I saw it on Showtime. Then of course was ecstatic when it came out on video - hey I was only 15. True, that was a time when Stevie wasn't at her best mentally and physically but, I think she was passionate. I remember one comment she made in 87 when she was talking about the video, she said something like "I could have looked better, but that night, I cared." Which I found to be an odd comment, but I think I know what she meant. Stevie knew her health was in jeopardy and that she needed help, but she also knew she had to finish the tour and the fact that it was being filmed, she was going to give it all she had. Well, obviously some of "all she had" had to be re-done however, as others have pointed out, there are some great moments in the video. "Beauty and the Beast" does rank up there as one of my favorite performances by Stevie ever. I love Stand Back, No Spoken Word and Has Anyone Ever ... all great performances.

By today's standards the video is a mess, for sure.
But I'm sure her management persuaded her to film this tour because they weren't sure if she was going to Jimi/Janis/Morrison off this planet and there would ever be another tour (God forbid) after this one.
Sure it's cheesey now, but I loved it when it came out. I taped it off Showtime and watched it every morning while I got ready for work. It was a treat to have any live performances back in the day (touched up/redone or not). I'd watch this video at home in the morning and then as I was driving to work I'd listen to the Westwood One Jones Beach RAL show on cassette that I taped off the radio and I thought I was in heaven.
The world was much different in 1987. You actually had to write letters (with stamps and everything) to people to trade bootlegs and wait a month or two. And video bootlegs were virtually non-existent, so Red Rocks was a treat. Can you imagine?

I saw it on Showtime....
I taped it off Showtime....I watched it on Showtime, too... the funny/sad thing though, is that we didn't subscribe! I could hear it perfectly, but the picture was all distorted and snowy -- about the only time I knew for certain it was even Stevie on screen, was when I'd see a flash of blond hair within all of the distortion (and I was probably seeing Waddy and Jennifer Condos at times too!).
Actually seeing the REAL thing when it was released on VHS, was a revelation. Even to this day, I don't mind all of the "special effects" and re-shot close-ups, etc. Certainly that stuff looks cheesy and dated when viewed with 20 years of hindsight, but to my 15 year old eyes at the time, it was all so extremely cool... and luckily I can still watch Red Rocks with those eyes, and just enjoy it for what it is. :)

They all have that bad editing after this as well. Check The Dance when she is playing a different Tambo during the same song. Also, I think there are moments in the Mirage video and maybe the Tusk doc where the far away stage shots are completely different than the song - oh well

Lord Child - I am right there with ya! I can so remembering taping the radio shows, writing other fans and/or Ginny K. for information. I also remember taping VH-1 all night and then FF'ing the tape the next day to see if I got the new video  I also read Rolling Stone every week and went to the PUBLIC library and researched her and them on MICROFICHE
I am such a loser

We all were back in the day  I remember waiting for weeks by my mailbox to hear from Ginny (I was still in Holland back then). Getting a tape from an American show was the sh*t. I used to go downtown every day to check all the American magazines for Stevie/Fleetwood Mac and pay top $$$ for them. In the 70's I had to ask my Mom for an advance on my allowance every week  Poor woman, I must've cost her a fortune.....

Rock on ancient queen, absolutely! :wavey:
I was right there with you. Video taped the Red Rocks show from SHOWTIME and watched it numerous times every single day. The Westwood One radio show was one of my most worn out cassettes. LOL
It's crazy to think what things would have been like then to have Youtube or even the internet.
Makes me feel old? Absolutely! But I was there when it was all happening...

Omg Shut UP! You just took me back all those years. I did the exact same thing. My parents did have HBO, but not Showtime.
I actually still love this video. As others have pointed out, BATB is superb- I tear up every time I watch it and I love this version of Edge. There are some great moments on this video- you really have to overlook the craxy editing.

I always thought it was really odd that her bangs were curly in the long shot and perfectly straight in the close-ups, not to mention the streaks of red. Looking back I think it's funny that they tried to get around all the erratic editing and stuff by saying something on the box like "enhanced with cutting edge special effects" or something like that.
Still, Has Anyway Ever Written Anything For You, Stand Back and Beauty and the Beast are all killers on this show. Plus I like the almost manic Outside The Rain where she goes high at the end of almost every line, and the transition to Dreams is perfect.
But, as much as I don't like to criticize, Edge of Seventeen scares me. I remember really liking it when the video first came out. Then I watched it a few years ago and my jaw hit the floor. She just looks so messed up. And comparing it with the amazing version that's on Crystal Visions, it's amazing to think there's what, a nearly 20 year difference? I'm so happy that Stevie cleaned herself up. It would have been such a waste if she had burned out in 87.
