View Full Version : Stevie Taking questions on TODAY

Apparently, Stevie will be answering emails after her performance on the Today show. Here's the link:

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/17709376/

I sent one in asking if any songs would be "pulled out from under the rug" for the setlist on her upcoming tour. I pray they make her answer it.

i asked her about remastering bella donna and/or wild heart...and making them cd/dvd packages...

i can dream...can't i?

OMG, what do you ask the Queen of Rock? So many questions swirling around my head. Me thinks there would be a better chance of getting something answered by Stevie if it was CV related, but you never know.

MacMan

I asked if we'll ever see the HBO video on dvd and/or any of her recent live shows on DVD... Of course I praised her for CV to begin with, and just thanked her for the dvd and the live tracks...

You know its gunna be

"What is Rhiannon about?"

"Are you coming to California?"

"How did you and Lindsey join Fleetwood Mac?"

All the ****tards get on these kind of things.

I think I might ask, who and what is Everybody's Finds Out about? Or better yet if she knows of The Ledge?
I don't what to ask. I think some convo over dinner would do me much better.

This was my question:

Stevie, Thank you for being so candid on the Crystal Visions collection on what inspired you to write the songs and the stories behind them.

Are you still inspired to write new material for release some day? Your fan base is loving this release and also yearns for new material to rock to and enjoy for years to come.

A follow up question if I may:
I love seeing you in concert. Your Stand Back spins are a crowd favorite. How do you prevent from getting dizzy or missing the microphone when coming out of the spins?

(I know the Stand Back spins question is kind of lame, but had to think of a question that she will feel safe in answering).

I have to admit, I was disappointed to hear that even though Stevie is writing, the next possible release will not be her material, but rather blues standards.
But then I got to thinking... I think some Stevi-fied blues songs would rock.
Maybe put an edgier sound to them. Hell, even if she just covers the songs exactly, would be interesting. Pat Benatar did the same type of thing with BB King's songs and I enjoy listening to that CD. So, it could work if done right.

I think a standards (blues?) album would be a great change of pace for her. I know a lot of rock fans don't especially like things like that, but whatever. I love Joni Mitchell's standards album. And is it weird that this is the first time she's ever mentioned an Aunt Carmal??

^^ ugh. sorry - i can't agree. i heard that and just groaned. actually, i groaned first at the fact that she wants to work with david foster - and i'm a canadian!! what david foster produces is such total bland, middle of the road pablum. music for elevators. and to me, a rock and roll singer is signalling she is old and done when she starts doing the "old standards." yawn.

okay - fire away. :wavey:

I was also confused by Aunt Carmel. How come we have never heard of her before?

I am excited that she is still writing. I think we will see some new stuff eventually.

And a Blues Cover album could be kind of cool. I just love hearing her voice, even if she didn't write the songs. This could be interesting.

I'd love to hear her do something different. At least she'd be singing something new and unusual and evolving a bit. Even if they are old standards and the idea isn't fresh.

Done? Did someone say done?

"Done" is singing 32 year old songs on the talkshow circuit, folks.

In my opinion (yeah, yeah, who asked for it), an artist is only "done" when they're dead. Until then, their paths are filled with peaks and valleys.
Some of us are only interested in going along for the ride, if we get to determine the destination... others are just happy to see where the road takes us.

Anyone who doesn't like where Stevie's going, should get out of the car and start hitchhiking. :)

i'm going to assume - and to be honest, hope - that you are kidding here? that that's what the smiley face means? because otherwise, i don't think anyone has the right to tell me to stop being a fan just because i don't love every single solitary move she makes. or to imply that i'm only interested, as you say, for the ride. you? have no idea of what you speak, my friend, if you think i'm only interested in the ride if i get to choose the destination. how condescending. and i certainly don't have to explain or defend my feelings about stevie nicks to anyone.

I'm not saying that anyone isn't a "true" fan or that anyone else is a more deserving fan. Hell, I don't love EVERY move she makes either.
It's just that with all the Chicken Little -- "the sky is falling" -- sentiments that are expressed around here on a daily basis ("nostalgia act," "non-artist," "sell-out," "washed up"), I do tend to sometimes think, "well, if you're so disappointed by what Stevie is doing, perhaps there's something better to be focusing your attentions on."

And, by "you," I don't mean you personally, but in general.

Maybe some fans don't give Stevie enough credit... or maybe I give her too much credit. Who knows?
I just don't think that any of this is anywhere remotely close to being the end of the world. I also don't think that this is Stevie's last hurrah. What I do think, is that she's enjoying being out on the road and having fun... without any pressures or anxieties... and, at some point, she'll be ready to focus on creating something new again.

Every artist needs to re-charge their batteries from time to time. Some disappear for years or decades... Stevie packs her duffle-bag and tours.

(By the way, I've already expressed my opinion in the past, that I would really rather Stevie not record an album of standards or covers. I absolutely agree with you there. I'm far more interested in her own writing. But, admittedly, based on how she's always managed to take a song written by someone else and make it truly her own, it's not an idea that I'm violently opposed to. It just wouldn't be my first... or second... choice.)

The smiley face was passive aggression to indicate I should shut the hell up if I think her actions are less than perfect.

Oh, but catinthedark, you most certainly do. Or you can just smile and take the cautionary slaps. Or just don't ever really say it plainly. Okay, maybe if you profess love and devotion and absolute understanding of Stevie's inner turmoil too. Because she's such a put upon victim and has such troubles.
It takes patience and dedication to continue to express direct dissatisfaction with any aspects of the Goddess. The road is long, grasshopper, and the obstacles are many.
The subtext is: You can feel it, but you can't express it honestly. Not without a justification and a small or large argument, depending on your energy level. Never a dull moment, baby. It reminds me of a bad movie of the week about Suzanne Somers' childhood for some odd reason. Minus the bedwetting.

I thought Stevie's Today performance was BORING. There's only so many times I can try to look on the positive side and say "she looked great".

I just can't muster the energy to be excited about hearing Landslide and Rhiannon. In fact, I fast forwarded through both songs. I didn't even like the interview very much. I cringed when Lauer started zipping through songs from her past trying to get quick comments from her. Stevie's too slow for that. And I don't mean slow like dumb, I mean she takes her time answering questions and isn't the type to spit out quick answers.

At this point, I'm desperate for the album of standards. Something new...anything...anything....anything.....

You don't have to defend your feelings... you have every right to them.
I'm not saying that anyone isn't a "true" fan or that anyone else is a more deserving fan. Hell, I don't love EVERY move she makes either.
It's just that with all the Chicken Little -- "the sky is falling" -- sentiments that are expressed around here on a daily basis ("nostalgia act," "non-artist," "sell-out," "washed up"), I do tend to sometimes think, "well, if you're so disappointed by what Stevie is doing, perhaps there's something better to be focusing your attentions on."

why? why do you care, or even think you have the right, to judge how someone else reacts to stevie nicks? it's not like you're her mother, having to stick up for her in the face of the mean bullies in the schoolyard. there is a very wide definition of fandom. some may call themselves "fans" because they own rumours and know the words to dreams. is this "fan" not a fan enough because they don't own all the demos, outtakes, and never released? similarly, a fan can be a fan and hate every solo album she has made. you STILL have no right to suggest they have something better to focus their attention on.

And, by "you," I don't mean you personally, but in general.

yeah. i got that. in general, there are a lot of people who you don't think are fan enough to be here.

Maybe some fans don't give Stevie enough credit... or maybe I give her too much credit. Who knows?

why do any fans have to give her credit? give her credit for what? i like what she does. i like her voice. i like her lyrics. i pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars to travel and see her live. i like the discussions here - and i like to hear the opinions of people here. i like that there are other people in the world who like her as much as i do. but if my like/love/admiration/obsession/respect/whatever of her doesn't measure up to yours, i'm still allowed to be here - and call myself a fan. oh, and say that an album of standards from her would not thrill me.

I just don't think that any of this is anywhere remotely close to being the end of the world.

where did i or anyone else suggest it is?

That is generally how people debate, yeah.

So I'm not sure why you seem to feel your opinions are any more valid than mine, as such to render your conversations with me "pointless."

I never mentioned validity. The reason the exchages are pointless is that they are played out. They're always the same. And frankly, your opinions aren't of much interest to me.

Oh, come off it. You once accused me of being "up on the cross," and now that's how you sound. No one is immune to having their opinions debated around here. Not me, not you, not anyone. Me? On the cross? If there is one thing I lack for certain, it is a martyr complex. I like to avoid making posts such as this. Its about as new as, oh, doing Landslide, talking about Lindsey, or speaking of my belief in cycles. For the record, I like a healthy exchange of ideas. And I am capable of writing an epic to back up my opinions. I'm just not interested in doing those things with you.

I do not understand why the discussion has to focus on people's opinion of what defines a Stevie fan. Sometimes I feel like people think if they defend Stevie unconditionally and attack people who express disappointment in her then somehow Stevie is going to notice and send a handwritten thank you note or something.

I think we've all established that we are fans. Someone could say that I'm not as much a fan because I am finding the whole CV/sameoldsetlist to be extremely boring and uninspiring while I could say that someone who praises her unconditionally and does nothing to encourage her to be creative is not a real fan. It's a futile discussion.

The discussion should be did you like the Today performance and why or did you not like it and why not.

I did not like it because it was the same thing I've seen over and over for the past zillion years. It was no different from her last Today show appearance. It was disappointing to hear them play songs like TTM and I Can't Wait before/after the commerical breaks but know that she will never sing those songs again. It was disappointing that she didn't even do Rock And Roll, which, while I'm not a big fan of that song, would have at least shown the world that she is doing something other than trotting out 1975 nostalgia.

I was a little depressed watching the Today segment.....

I was too. I thought the end of Rhiannon was interesting in that she tried to have fun with it, but she did not go too far.

In the end, I really like her. However, I am tired of essentially the same outfit and the same songs over and over with some great exceptions like R&R, CD, and B&B.

I was watching the CV video of the actual take from After the Glitter Fades and I cried because that is the Nicks I knew and there is little of that voice left. Then, i saw her JAMMINBG in that dance scene - and there is little of that around as well - though she certainly showed some on the TP tour  But, I cut her slack because of her age and am thankful when she chooses to show it. I have NEVER once... and I challenge anyone to find where I have... said that anyone is less than a fan than anyone else.

All I suggested was that perhaps some fans would be happier turning their attentions and energies elsewhere... even for just a little while... instead of constantly finding themselves disappointed by Stevie's choices.

That's not a criticism of someone's right to call themselves a fan, it's just an opinion that perhaps there are better, more positive things to focus on instead.

Hate your house -- find a new one. Boyfriend keeps breaking your heart -- dump him. Favorite TV show sucks now -- turn the channel. Bored with your favorite singer -- listen to a new one.

I just can't imagine finding any enjoyment whatsoever in something or someone that continually lets you down. That's all.

I can name five good friends whose opinions on Stevie are far closer to yours than to mine, and we all enjoy discussing our various viewpoints. Since none of them post here on this board, I seek out those discussions with people who do.

I don't know about anyone else, but it's not interesting for me to debate with the people who already agree with me... it's more fun to talk to the people who have a different stance. That's when a conversation is lively and more challenging... even if it's a topic that's been discussed countless times before... since there are always new angles and aspects to mull over.

this is exactly how i feel. in the end, i will always love her. but i, too, like rickypt, am finding the whole CV sameoldsetlist, boring and uninspiring. i miss the wild, crazy, creative stevie. but if she's had enough, and now just wants to sing the same old songs, i'll still go to her shows. will i buy CV? nope.

Anyone know what two other questions she answered were?

Unless some unaired footage surfaces - I don't think we'll ever know.

i'm going to assume - and to be honest, hope - that you are kidding here? that that's what the smiley face means? because otherwise, i don't think anyone has the right to tell me to stop being a fan just because i don't love every single solitary move she makes. or to imply that i'm only interested, as you say, for the ride. you? have no idea of what you speak, my friend, if you think i'm only interested in the ride if i get to choose the destination. how condescending. and i certainly don't have to explain or defend my feelings about stevie nicks to anyone.

RELAX!!!:) :)

It's called spotting - you pick a point and let your eye meet it coming out of every turn so you don't get dizzy.

Maybe that is why she has ribbons or those long chains (for a lack of a better word) on the mic stand so it is easier to see coming out of the twirls. She might use the mic stand as her "point" of reference.

If you watch her when she spins, she always focuses her eyes out, like towards the audience. I am sure she chooses a spot and focuses on it but I do not think it is her mic, because she does not look down. She turns, looks out, turns again, looks out, turns, looks, turns, grabs mic. lol The ribbons and beads/rosary are for her to play with...aka for security. I always think of the ribbons as Stevie's security blanket. She fiddles with them when she is nervous, as well as when she is singing. I think it is kind of interesting to watch her "spinning" technique. Although it is much, MUCH slower than it was years ago. She used to just spin and not worry about getting dizzy.... :o

While the crew was breaking down after her performance, Stevie took 5 to answer a few of your e-mails ...

I do believe they meant stevie would take 5...as in 5 minutes not 5 questions.

The subtext is: You can feel it, but you can't express it honestly. Not without a justification and a small or large argument, depending on your energy level. Never a dull moment, baby. It reminds me of a bad movie of the week about Suzanne Somers' childhood for some odd reason. Minus the bedwetting.

Piss-funny Sparky - I enjoyed that.

Regarding the possibility of David Foster producing Stevie - please say it isn't so! Did she actually say this? If so, did she elude to a particular project - the blues album or the next original work? **** I'm scared now.

Why not team up with Tom Petty or Rick Rubin for the blues album? I wonder if she's fallen out with Sheryl Crow and John Shanks? What about Pierre Marchand or dare I say it... Rupert Hine? I know I'll be crucified for the last suggestion, but I think he could just be the one to salvage her career at this point. Listen to Suzanne Vega's "Songs In Red & Gray" and then judge. He may even agree to another collaboration... if she got down on all fours and begged.

Why was the word "****" censored from my previous post? This hasn't happened before and I'm sure I've read at least one or two usages of it today elsewhere on this forum.

I just can't imagine finding any enjoyment whatsoever in something or someone that continually lets you down.

She doesn't continually let us down....that's the thing. Just when I least expected it, she went on the road with Petty and showed more energy than in 20+ years. I just don't see how she can go from that to this year of playing Landslide on a zillion talk shows. She's an enigma, that one.....

That's kinda like what my friend told me, who took many years of dance. She said when you twirl you "spot" once or twice (which is focusing on a spot when going around). If you watch Stevie, that's what she does.

Still, I could never do it without getting dizzy.
