So I think the DVD is FANTASTIC. The commentary is really great. I love seeing this side of Stevie, like I'm chillin' backstage with Stevie in her dressing room or something. Her one-liners and goofy-cute anecdotes ("so if you're not a swan, you're never going to have a long-term relationship"), and flippin the double bird are a riot
I also liked all her hair "secrets"...the extensions, and an explanation for the Street Angel hair.
So Blue Denim is about Lindsey. :woohoo:

to access Easter eggs one has to play a DVD completely start-to-finish to unlock that feature. Hopefully there's something on there somewhere.

I thought the newer titles like Live from Boston and especially Destiny Rules, like some unaired fighting scenes  , would have SOMETHING.

when speaking of Fleetwood Mac in terms of the DVD world they are still WAY behind the curve - Consider any FM DVD to be the Flintstones Bedrock Mobile of DVD's, and newer DVD's such as Rush's "R30" as the Lambourghini Countach of DVD's (The Easter eggs on Rush's "R30" can only be played if you watch complete segments and/or figure out the hidden menu tricks to activate 'em).
I'm sure a decent FM DVD will be released somewhere around 2184, at the earliest!!!

Was I mistaken in thinking there was an audio interview?
The press release said there was an audio interview.. Same guy that provided the written comments in the package.
"The DVD component of "CRYSTAL VISIONS" offers 13 Stevie videos with voice-over commentary by Nicks as well as an audio interview by journalist David Wild. Also included on the DVD is a never before seen Stevie Nicks home video which was filmed during the making of the five-times platinum "BELLA DONNA" album. The accompanying booklet will have original Stevie Nicks art work as well as photographs and personal pictures hand-picked by the artist representing a cross section of iconic pictures spanning her entire career".

I thought it was humerous that all of the songs she could add back into the set, she talks about doing Whole Lotta Trouble. While *I* agree with her saying there is a lot of energy in that song, I thought there would be a lot of opposition against it. Personally if she added anything from OSOTM I'd be thrilled. I think its safe to say that Rooms on Fire is gone. She didn't even put it in the booklet. :(

I love the "fashion show" part...that is so cute. Her comments about EveryDay were goofy...."the swans fight all day long but at least they are married". Okay Stevie. :p I cannot believe she likes the Blue Denim hair! Gack. So she wrote Blue Denim for Lindsey.......did anyone actually think it was about someone else?
I seriously teared up watching her sing "After the Glitter Fades"......she was just so stunning!
The linear notes were somewhat interesting...especially the comments about each song. My favorite was Planets of the Universe and her comment about Lindsey being blown away by JS's work on the song.
Lastly, her comments about "lip singing" cracked me up. Doesn't she remember recording "Whole Lotta Trouble" live? She thought her lip "singing" was better in that video.......uh, yea Stevie, you were actually singing!

I think that the song was recorded live and then she did a video in the studio. Or at least part of it because her lips are off in a few places so she can't be actually singing in the video because she would have missed some of the words.
But I loved all the comments throughout the videos. I haven't finished all of the Bella Donna footage yet, but I can't wait. And what is this about hidden features? Is it just on this DVD or are there any on the other DVDs? If so, can someone help me out and let me know what to do to get to them? Thanks so much!

Just spent the last few hours watching the DVD, and I love it! Loved the comments on 'Everyday'-she was so honest, saying she wasnt very pleasant to work with and the director must have hated her by the end of the shoot. And I love when she laughs. I realized I love her talking voice as much as I love her singing voice.
It was worth going downtown to Virgin to get this, although I noticed I didnt see any of the DVD's except for the one I got off the shelf in the CD section. I expected them to have a bunch in stock.
Anyhow, it's great, and I havent even listened to the CD yet.
No offence Takenbythesky, but Stevie's comments regarding Jon Bon Jovi really left a bad taste in my mouth. When she commenced talking about him on the dvd, I initially thought from the hesitant tone of her voice that she was attempting to be diplomatic and perhaps was unsure of what she could say that would be deemed positive. However, when she began gushing about what a great guy and producer he was, it made me surge with anger.
This guy is an absolute prick and Stevie has attested to as much in the past. Does she even recall what she said during the Vox interview in early 1992? She spoke about how unpleasant and controlling he was, not to mention the fact that she had her hand forced in regard to recording that piece of crap or else "her career was over".
JBJ (I can't even bear to repeat his name in full) was a powerful industry player at that time whereas Stevie wielded none of his clout. This, coupled with her advancing years in age and the prescription drug dependancy, made her easy prey and that son-of-a-bitch exploited the situation.
(Belinda Carlisle is on record as stating that he threatened to end her career in the late 1980's unless she "put out" for him. Thankfully, the little worm was no match for bold Belinda but she was indeed younger, feistier and more bankable than Stevie at the time.)
I also have a radio interview that Miss Nicks did in 1991 where she spoke of not even being able to tolerate being in the same room as JBJ and that she actually waited until he abandoned the sessions before returning to the studio to lay down the vocal without him breathing down her neck.
What hypocrisy! I know that Stevie is fickle at the best of times but my god, this takes her inconsistent behaviour into a whole other realm!
What are we to make of this latest admission? Did Stevie secretly lust after this misogynist or did she actually lay the hard word on him only to be spurned, resulting in the subsequent (well deserved) denigrating of his character at the time? As for JBJ being loyal to his "wife of thirty years" - what is this woman smoking? Maybe that's how she dealt with the possible rejection of her advances??
This time I've been well and truly turned off. I'm losing respect...

It is laughable I agree but do you really think she's going to rake this annoying individual over the coals in a DVD best of package? She was probably more honest in her Klonopin haze when whatever came up came out than she has ever been subsequently.

it's called Crystal Visions..
The CD – Love is.. the live version of Edge…probably one of my favorite things about this package.. ah.. when she finishes singing ..the sea does not change.. and the strings power in… good, good stuff.. great use of an orchestra on a rock and roll song.. Also, love Rhiannon live. Great arrangement.. captured the song’s darkness..
I had high hopes for the stringed laced Landslide, but her voice, for the most part, seems uninspired. I also felt like there was too much going on – keep it simple – Stevie's voice and guitar.. of course, it's hard to top the Dance version. also, the guitar strumming needs to be softened.. There were a few moments when the orchestra seems to work..and i do like the instrumentation after she sings the first "I'm getting older, too.." but overall, disappointment fell in my path.. the ending is cool.. her voice seems to perk up a bit.. saves the song, somewhat..
The Videos – The best part of the package… after viewing “Edge” there is definitely a need to release the White Winged Dove HBO complete show on dvd.. Stevie looked delicious, the band was on fire, and everyone loved her back then.. I totally loved Blue Denim (good to see some Street Angel representation).. the band.. the colors.. the hair.. and although it’s not one of my favorite songs, I do think the I Can’t Wait Video is one of her best.. and I guess I was stoned during the 80s because I don’t remember her brother being one of the dancers..
Stevie’s Scarlett at the saloon having a strong drink.. you can’t shoot that man in my video.. Stevie was right.. her idea was bad… Stand Back take 2.. a bit better, but she was right on about it being so 80s. and the tread mill.. Ugh..
The Making of Bella Donna – Love her studio dance to Edge…how she ends “Blue Lamp”.. her interaction with Jimmy Iovine.. how her voice sounded so beautiful during “After the Glitter…” her fingers playing air piano during “How Still My Love..” love the echo of the voice.. notice how she was wearing something different in each scene.. loved the Outside the Rain posing by the blue lamp photo shoot.. great stuff..
Overall, a nice collection for this Stevie fan.. I’m enjoying it.

Yes I realise it's neither the time nor the place for recriminations but she would have been well advised to just a) concentrate on the video - after all, her commentary is supposed to be in regard to the clips even though she probably spends more time actually talking about the various songs' origins and b) perhaps shut the ol' trap from time to time and not feel the need to compensate for pauses with inarticulate nonsense - this approach in general would stand her in good stead more often than not.
Better still, it may have been an idea to dispense with SIAB altogether and fight for If You Ever Did Believe's right to party instead?
Moving on, am I the only one disappointed that the studio clip for Edge Of Seventeen wasn't included? Sure I dig the live version but that could have been reserved for the inevitable dvd release of the HBO concert. Alas, another wasted opportunity eluding our increasingly out-of-touch earth mother.
Keith, I'm glad you're enjoying the collection but I have to say I'm in disagreement with you over the live versions. I actually adore the orchestrated Landslide - to the point where I consider it virtually perfect. I attended the MSO concert and remember initially being concerned about the slightly busy string arrangement but hearing it again after all this time, I find it deeply affecting and actually quite beautiful. Well done Miss Stevie.
Strangely enough, I also really like the version of Rock 'N' Roll, despite not having any real affinity for the song itself. This sounds as good as the recent versions of I Need To Know and Stop Draggin' My Heart Around she performed with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Good stuff indeed.
That said, Rhiannon and Edge Of Seventeen, in my opinion, leave a lot to be desired. Rhiannon sounds suspiciously like a cut 'n' paste job - sufficiently doctored as if to almost be a studio recording (did I hear someone say "Red Rocks?"). Whilst it trods along okay, to these ears, it's also somewhat listless and uninspired.
As for Edge, well I love the string section (at least what we get of it), but the vocal is decidedly off for the most part and the phrasing is embarrassing. I guess I'm also still a little pissed off that this song is represented twice at the expense of greater, more deserving songs/singles, both solo and with the Mac.
This all poses the question for me as to whether she will issue a live album later in the year as previously touted. If so, this would be the opportunity to get more from the MSO concert (Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You, Rhiannon, Beautiful Child, Beauty & The Beast) as well as the wondrous Circle Dance from one of the Vegas shows.
Now for a laugh... what's up with the ridiculous artwork for the booklet? The front cover of the cd is okay and the back cover is completely gorgeous but once you delve inside, it's sadly all downhill. Some of the photos included are not only tasteless, Stevie actually looks ugly in quite a few of them, even though I know her to be a fantastic looker. How odd.

I remember her always saying how she liked Bon Jovi, but the song was not for her, etc. So, she did it his way and then changed it after. I'd like to read the interviews that say she hated him, etc. Does anyone have those? If so, please post.
On edit - here is the 2/92 Vox interview, in which she does not diss John Bon Jovi at all, to wit:
"I was told that if I didn't do a song by Jon Bon Jovi then my career was over. I don't have any reason to hate Jon Bon Jovi. He wrote me a song that was a wonderful thing to do. I knew that just me singing it wasn't going to go over well with my fans, which it hasn't. But I was told by the industry, by management, and by everybody else that if I did NOT do this, and reach this new audience, that my career was simply, finally, completely over.
They exerted all the pressure you could possibly exert, they scared me to death. So I did the song, and is it a big hit song? No, it's not."
She found it particularly distasteful to sing the word 'bitch', which she considers a swear word. Stevie concedes that she has difficulty challenging authority figures.

Note - the interviewer in this was not that good and the article is full of inaccuracies.

^^ She definately said JBV was controlling and she disliked him. Of course her tune changed after she kicked the klonopin. Stevie was more honest when she was out of it. Hopefully someone can post the radio interview from Timespace...I think that is one place she did comment on John. I am not all up in arms because she said John had a nice ass in the dvd though. She is consistently inconsistent in her statements, so why should this dvd be any different? I also thought she was being flip in that whole segment....
Oh and the shot of Jimmy Iovine in those tight white jeans? Good God....I nearly lost my dinner. I do not need to see him sans undies every again. (Lindsey...anyday but not JI)

I know she said that about the producer and her record company people. But, in the Timespace liner notes and elsewhere during the period, she says mostly nice things even though she did not want to do the song. I remember the live interview where she says she Bon Jovi made her sing it one way and that her fans would never like it, so she did it and then changed it after.
There is also an interview with him where he praises her by saying what you see is what you get with her.
Of course, all of this is from memory, except for the article above.

Yea, it is not the Timespace liner notes, I recall a radio interview where she was rather vocal about John. It really does not matter to me....she can hardly be 100 percent honest and candid in interviews. I am sure she says she likes people, when she really doesn't.
Hey, wasn't that Whole Lotta Trouble video recorded live? Of course some of the vocal could have been tweaked and reworked in the studio, but the video was recorded on tour, right? So, she is not "lip singing".

The gem on the cd for me has got to be EO17 live! I've fallen in love with it all over again. Listening to it felt like the first time I heard it on a field trip in 8th grade. Rock & Roll is mind blowing, Landslide is fresh, Dreams is fun to dance around to. It's a great cd and the DVD well, its perfect. Right down to Stevie giving the finger to Sharon and Lori.

The only producer I ever recall Stevie describing as "controlling" was Glyn Johns... not Jon Bon Jovi.
It was a 1994 radio interview with Mary Turner, and she said that she waited until he had left the country before she went back into the studio to "fix" what he had done to her record ('Street Angel,' of course).
And so I went back in, with Thom Panunzio, to try and fix what I was not happy with. And I didn't fix it while I was working with the person that I was working with [Glyn Johns]... who doesn't like to be talked about because he's not speaking to me... I didn't like it when he was there, and he knew it, and basically he told me to... like, in no uncertain english, very rough terms, to shut up and deal with it and this was the way it was going to be.
So I waited for him to not only leave, but be gone for two months, before I summoned up enough courage to say well, I know this isn't right, this is just not me. This is not my record. So I went back in for about eight weeks and I didn't mess with the vocals, which I should have. But I was so sort of overwhelmed with trying to fix the things that I didn't like about the music, which was like... there was no percussion, there was no Waddy Wachtel. Because I was told that the last thing that I would need was Waddy Wachtel. And I, you know...I mean, to that comment I was so speechless that I just didn't do anything, I said ok. So when I went back in, I had Waddy come in and play, and I had Peter Michael come in and put percusssion on, and Michael Campbell came back and put some more guitar on it, and we re-mixed everything, and we did a lot of other things besides that.
In anything that I've ever read or heard, she's never said anything remotely unkind about Jon Bon Jovi.

My thoughts...
The CD good, mostly rehashed, a few things that were fresh, no biggie.
The DVD:
The videos w/ the commentary are classic... the hair conversation during Blue Denim... Is it my imagination or was she singing different lyrics for Whole Lotta Trouble... I realize it was "live" but I don't recall even hearing that version live??? Has it always been that way...
The making of Bella Donna was the best part for me...
The Blue Lamp footage is my favorite part of the package...
It's one of favorite Stevie songs, and the interaction with Jimmy was great (earth to Stevie!)

I think this release is in a word: a treasure.
All the live recordings are way better than I expected. This is my most favorite version of Landslide next to the 1980 live album. And with all the contradicting or revised comments of comments made in the past, throughout the videos, it's still an amazing offering of Stevie's views and opinions on some of her most memorable material.
She's shines throughout "Crystal Visions". Like she always has in my heart.

I love what she said about Jon Bon Jovi - what was it? "Great butt, loyal man..." and something else? And then that *smack* noise w/ her mouth - "They don't make 'em like that anymore." :p
I've been in bliss watching the DVD and listening to the new tracks on the CD.
The CD...
I'm glad to have a Stevie compilation cuz I don't have Timespace or Enchanted (before my fandom began). Every once in a while you want to throw on a Greatest Hits and get some work done. So, it's a nice thing to have. A double CD, with some more important tracks would have been nice, but probably too much to ask for and less marketable.
The first thing I listened to was the live version of Rhiannon simply because I wanted to hear one of the new songs. It's certainly not the best version in the world, but in terms of post-Dance versions (that I've heard) it's not bad.
I feel like the mixing on the MSO songs could have been better. IMHO, the two things that make any song better are 1. vocal harmony and 2. string arrangements. What's there is good, but it should be bigger and louder.
I'm getting a little sick of the Rumours version of Silver Springs. How great would it have been if one of the more passionate outtakes floating around got remastered for CV. My favorite one has a lot more passion in the vocal and harmonics in the guitar.
Rock and Roll was fun. Stevie can do anything.
It was cool that Leather and Lace had that extra line from Don in it. I don't know if that's old news to some of you, but it surprised me last night.
The liner notes were nice. I was dissapointed that Rooms On Fire got the snub...I've always liked it. Does she really not like that song?
The DVD...
I love this thing. It made me so happy to have GOOD QUALITY versions of her videos. Watching the commentary today made me love Stevie even more. It felt like talking with a good friend on some level. She seemed to notice the same flaws and funny things that I did. (ie. the treadmill...I always make fun of that).
Am I the only one who things the Scarlett Stand Back is better than the second try? I mean sure...it's nonsensicle...but it was the 80s. It certainly has more of a concrete story than the second version. I love Stevie's commentary "And now that I've come through the civil war...I need a drink!"
I was a little disapointed that the videos for EO17 and If You Ever Did Believe weren't on there. But the live version of EO17 kicked ass. I've never seen the HBO Special so...it was great. Let's release that thing already.
The Making of Bella Donna
The quality of the video tape made me sad. If the thing had been released earlier, would it have been better?
That said, it was cool to see. Stevie giving Lori and Sharon the finger and Sharon's big glasses were awesome. Jimmy Iovine's package was not.
It would have been nice if the Making Of had been put together and little better with present-day interviews from those involved spliced in with the clips. But of course...that's probably too much to ask.
Watching the videos made me want an equivalent Fleetwood Mac release SO BAD. Common...gimme a music video DVD including the Rosebud performaces. Imagine all five of them doing commentary on the videos. I think I would die happy. No...if I got the Tusk doc and Mirage concert on DVD as well, then I would die happy.
Overall, I love it! Horray!

I think the home movie footage of Bella Donna is the best part of the whole package. I love the part when Stevie and the girls are in the studio kidding around and Stevie gives Sharon and Lori the finger. It's funny how during the commentary of the videos Stevie keeps calling it "lip singing".

I think she's just being politic.
I wanna see where she said that! Please. I'd love it.
JBJ (I can't even bear to repeat his name in full) was a powerful industry player at that time whereas Stevie wielded none of his clout. This, coupled with her advancing years in age and the prescription drug dependancy, made her easy prey and that son-of-a-bitch exploited the situation.
Umm, I believe that the record compnay and management came up with the idea. he hardly needed to write her a song for his career. He didn't propose the idea. He's sold more records than she has anyway.
(Belinda Carlisle is on record as stating that he threatened to end her career in the late 1980's unless she "put out" for him. Thankfully, the little worm was no match for bold Belinda but she was indeed younger, feistier and more bankable than Stevie at the time.)
Details! Quotes! Bring it on!
She was a lump and a tranqhead at the time. I would be surpirsed at nothing.
We're lucky she was standing. Again, please, a transcript. I never heard her say anything bad about him.
Well, he's got a great ass. And a handsome face. She didn't say he wrote her a great song. Which is good, cause the song is crap. I think she's just being nice. As for loyalty, loyalty to JBJ when it comes to marriage is very Clintonesque. He has admitted as much in the press recently, which I will never understand. He's writing a book detailing such exploits, while still married. He's an adulterer and a sexual opportunist, but he's a rock star. That's what they all do.
This time I've been well and truly turned off. I'm losing respect...
Hm. I don't respect her any less for this. I think she's in LA LA land a lot.
I love that she comments on his butt.
I love that she comments on his butt.
Ordinarily, I would too - just so long as the "butt" belonged to some other arsehole. JBJ truly is a ****.

my favorite favorite part of the dvd is when she pined "i love you tom"
Hurt her feelings? I don't think so.
I got that it was 1982, and people were partying it up! Stevie was clearly having a good time... It's no secret that she was using drugs (reference Sorcerer video) and being a rock star...

CV makes me both happy and sad; on one hand the new recordings sounds great, at last i can see those videos at their quality, the commentary and the bella donna documentary are a real treat, and the whole thing is packaged very nicely. but all this comes to remind me (as if i needed a reminder...) of how potent this lady still is.
i'm now so incredibly bored from all this worthless and endless recycling that i just wanna scream, it's not real food, that's just microwaved crumbs, and i'm hungry. very hungry. i haven't eaten for years, and by now i'm really starving for something new.
I haven't seen the whole DVD yet, so I'll just comment on the CD. I have all the songs on this CD already on my iPod Stevie iMix Playlist except these songs which I've never heard before:
Dreams (with Deep Dish) - I'm not sure who "Deep Dish" is, but I'm not too crazy about this disco version & I like most disco. Just doesn't do it for me, Dog.
Rhiannon (Live) - Never heard this version before & I'm not really that crazy about it. I prefer the live version of this song on The Dance. This is on my iPod.
Landslide (Live w/the Melbourne Symphony) - I'm kind of on the fence about this version. I don't really hate it & I can't say I really like it either. Guess I'm neutral. Again, I sort of like The Dance version better; "Thank you Lindsey, thank you Stevie".
Rock & Roll (Live) - I believe I have heard her do this song live at a concert somewhere, & I really like it. Stevie can rock.
Edge of Seventeen (Live w/the Melbourne Symphony) - I was a little concerned when I first started listening. I mean it's a rock song. How can she pull it off singing it with a symphony? She's does pull it off. I really like it.

I just received my copy about 15 minutes ago (Waited til I finished playing the Morbid Angel "Covenant" disc I also received today) and the packaging is cool (About the fourth digi-pack I have received recently with the slip for the book in the middle).
Reading through the liner notes and Stevie's mentioning of Led Zep's Robert Plant...I remember an ol' thread for several years ago where ledgies were asked who would be a not obvious choice to sing with Stevie and I remember my choice as Robert Plant.
I'm listening to the CD and so far it sounds I hear a few differences in the mixes used, maybe it's just my ears but something is there (I mean that in a positive way) - "If Anyone Falls" definately sounds different to my ears. "Stand back" sounds very flat to me, the version on "Timespace" is more rockin'.
Will watch the DVD later this evening.
Oh, btw, the artwork on the labels of the DVD/CD is MUCH BETTER than the one used for the promo DVD

I still can't understand why she is choosing to rest on her laurels and become an oldies act.She has always said songwriting is her first love and lamented the lost years of creativity during the Klonopin addiction. There is so much she could be doing creatively and so many artists that would love to work with her .I can't begrudge her wishing to reitire if that was it ,but clearly she is not doing that and her reasoning that she won't get played on top 40 radio now which is terrible these days anyway rings very hollow. Her much mentioned (by her)buddies Petty and Dylan just put out commercial and critical hit albums with no top 40 airplay so why can't she follow their lead?

I don't have time to look for the interview, but it was done in the last year or two - she mentions that she's not interested in doing anything new on stage, and will keep trotting out the old faithful songs - she brought up the Top 40 "reason".
When I read those words from her, it was the moment I lost a lot of interest and respect for her. When an artist like Stevie gives up creating because of a lack of radio play, I don't get it. She needs to just retire if that's how she feels. I saw her during her first round in Vegas, and she seems to be phoning it in - the passion and excitement she used to have is gone.

Hmmm... Don't ever recall reading anything where "she mentions that she's not interested in doing anything new on stage, and will keep trotting out the old faithful songs - she brought up the Top 40 "reason"".
She's brought up the situation with radio play in a number of interviews and how hard it is to get something played on the radio, which it is for anyone over the age of 25!
I Do recall this interview where she stated "Do people really want to hear a whole other solo record, when you can get one or two songs for I-Tunes? I'm thinking about a way you could just put out a few songs once in a while, maybe four songs that you loved, instead of having to figure out 16 songs, many of which you might not love."

I concur .I'd rather see her retire than become some kind of an oldies act with an ever diminishing audience of boomers showing up to see the same songs year after year.I'm still in love with the old Stevie ..the one that can be seen in the making of Bella Donna on the DVD that is why I stick around and hope that she has a change of heart.

i think you should make the distinction between stevie THE STAR and stevie THE ARTIST, i think she's ridiculously captured in her own self image of stardom, and it's just so lame... i mean, who gives a **** about the charts and radio airplay? who the hell are you? britney spears? who gives a ****? you've been through this race, and won it big time, what do you need to prove? that's just stupid. not that it's bad to have a hit album, but it's not the main issue, do you think bob dylan wakes up wondering what's his position on billboard this morning? i highly doubt it, it's more likely that he thinks about how he can make his next album better.
i think CV is the finest example for all that; the live edge of 17 is ten times better than the original one which opens the album, but the irony is that today she won't be bothering writing a new stand back, coz she's not able to make a hit single out of it.

I agree with you. One look at some of the world's most creative artists - they NEED to create. They don't care about hits or radio play. Stevie has a well established fan base, who desperately wants new stuff, and that passion to continue. All we really get (certainly in live performance) is yet another Stand Back, which sounds the same as the version she's trotted out the last 10 years (or more). I truly wish she would tap into her creative spirit again.
Either that, or polish up some of the demos we have in our collections (not over produce them!) and give us a collection of her songs, perhaps presented in another way - acoustically, stripped down, the way she always said that if we were to hear them like that, we'd be moved.
I want to be moved.

I just got mine last night and watched the DVD only. I think the booklet was very nicely done, though I would have liked one or two current, brand new pics. I liked the pink color scheme a lot. Stevie's commentary was priceless. Her take on the Scarlet Stand Back had me in stitches. She was totally making fun of the whole thing. It was interesting to get her comments on videos I've been watching for years now. Her comment about FM never been filmed for an entire show confused me. The Mirage and Tango shows came to mind that were commercally released. Surely those shows were filmed in their entirety. She seemed very quiet during Blue Denim. I wonder when she wrote the lyrics to that song because it seemed like she had no idea what it was about or she didn't want to say. It sounded almost like she was making up the Lindsey story. I love behind the scenes the stuff like this so the DVD was thoroughly enjoyable. She did seem to have less to say on the later songs but maybe it was just me.

I'm spending my Saturday morning watching these DVDs - this is what this package is really all about - Stevie's videos (although I do love the CD).
The Scarlett video is quite interesting - when she's in the saloon having a shot of whiskey - there is a confederate flag behind the bar, but a pictue of Abe Lincoln on the wall behind her. Too funny..
And each time I watch Edge from the White Winged Dove tour I have to ask where is this DVD.. Stevie was at her best! Here's a thought - release it with the remastered Bella Donna cd.
now on to Rooms on Fire.. one of my fave vids..
Thanks again to Stevie for finally releasing her videos on DVD. I'm loving being a Stevie fan again..

I got the live tracks on iTunes. I just wish they sold the DVD separately, as it sounds great. Anyway, it's a pretty good version of Edge of Seventeen. I don't get why she put this *and* the studio version on the CD; she obviously didn't have any problems leaving it off of Enchanted in favor of a live version (which was pretty kick-ass, I must say).

I just received my copy yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I loved her Edge dance; all of the Belladonna footage actually. I liked her commentary on Rooms on Fire the best, I think. Although it made me very teary eyed. I became teary eyed through the whole thing, come to think of it. As far as the CD goes- I love the Mebourne Orchestra Edge and I really like Rhiannon too. But I definitely did not buy this for the CD- it's the DVD that sucked me in.

Stevie sounds flawless, and I love the eerieness that the orchestration adds.
I feel the same way. THE LIVE TRACKS! really make this satisfying, I have been listening to this version of Rhiannon repeatedly, and just today I played the MSO landslide for my sister, who has been exposed to all of my steviefandom for years, and she has heard MANY versions of these songs, and sad that was Her favorite version of Landslide. and I think it might be mine too. She said the songs NOW are more about where she is in her life now. Landslide doesnt sound "sad" or "scared" or "longing" anymore, it sounds Triumphant.

Are you for real Johnny? The instrumentation is excellent, enhanced by the orchestration, but Stevie is way off in my opinion. I can't recall a version of this song that contained a worse vocal, except perhaps for the Storytellers performance.
That said, I thought that the vocal on Landslide was supreme and yet a few members here have criticised it for various reasons. I guess this all just demonstrates our diversity, at least when it comes to personal taste.

I wasn't a major fan of Edge of Seventeen... or maybe I didn't appreciate it all that much cause I've heard it a billion times, and have become desensitized, but I have to say - this version with the orchestra is great! I love how it adds to the whole urgency of the song (does that make sense)... Gives it a real dramatic feel. I wish you could hear it more through the song actually.
I really like all the new live tracks... Rock and Roll was recorded in Pheonix August 4, 2005. If you have the dvd, check it out - it matches perfectly. Only thing different is her yelp at the end of the song... It must have been added while mixing it.

Those vids were a combo of a couple of nights put together and her HBO show was one show... one night.
I thought the HBO show (In Concert) was recorded over two nights. I vaguely recall someone saying that the vocal during Edge doesn't match up with Stevie's lips. Or was the one show overdubbed w/ a new vocal later?

I think her comments on the Everyday video were the best. "At least this video makes sense. Okay it doesn't make a lot of sense, but it makes a little sense." And I love when she said how much she loved her dress "and then he wanted me to get in the swan water... of course I refused."
I couldn't believe that her favorite hair from all the videos was from Sometimes Its a Bitch! What is she smoking? Her hair looks so dated and big in this video. I don't like it! But, whatever floats Stevie's boat.
I thought she looked beautiful in the Blue Denim video. It is funny that this was considered a low point for Stevie, but I think she pretty much looks like current day Stevie in that video, just with a perm. Which, I love the hair in that video!
Who wants to bet me that she doesn't add Whole Lotta Trouble to the setlist? It will never happen, but it is interesting that she said it out of all the videos. I would like her to do Blue Denim live, but she seemed really detached from that song. "I guess it is about Lindsey", as if she has no clue when she even wrote the song. Oh well!
Loved the Standback videos! But how did she think that the second Standback video made sense? I thought the civil war video had more of a storyline. I loved how she said that the horse almost killed her! I kept waiting for her to tell us this was a bad dream she had after watching too much Gone With the Wind.
Love the DVD!!!! The CD, which I have only listened to once, is just okay. Landslide seemed boring (it's just too overplayed at this point), Rhiannon seemed like a poor man's version of the Live In Boston Rhiannon... Edge is pretty great though! And, I love Rock and Roll...

I agree totally with your comment on our personal taste and opinion of Landslide live on the CD. This is the best recording of it since the FM live album of 1980. But I disagree with your comments on Edge. The vocal isn't her best ever but it's but it's the best we can expect from her now. I think the Live at Red Rocks version is probably the worst version I've heard. The ending is fantastic with her going on about "somewhere in the middle of the night, I think about you...". Love it.

The cd was awesome especially the live cuts with the MSO I think she should of release a live cd/dvd complete with them, as I though she was going to do.The deep dish Dreams was awesome in it's self.the cd was filled up to the max.The DVD was Awesome seeing Standback civilwar in living color and clearity. now I can delete the crappy ones on my computer.I can now retire the I Can't Wait completion vhs tape.so worned out, r.i.p. . The BellaDonna behind the scenes was out of this world, hum I wonder she videoed any other album recording sessions.the photo shoot was very interesting, and funny.looks like Stevie was having good time. The narrated portion was very, very interesting and informational.Maybe all artists should do this.my over all
score on this one is excellant.but one thing I wish it was on the dvd line up,she could of sneak in, the Wild Heart dressing room demo video.

Now if only we could meld the intense Red Rocks vocal with the superb instrumention of the MSO version...
Eliud, I almost agree with your comment regarding Stevie's current vocal ability but every now and then, we are reminded that she is still capable of delivering a great performance. For instance, the aforementioned Landslide MSO version, this newly released version of Rock 'N' Roll plus the recent live takes of Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, I Need To Know and Insider with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. I also dig the "somewhere in the middle of the night, I think about you" line but rather than soar, she kind of stops short in half-arsed fashion. This should (and could) have been raised to the ****ing roof. Do you know what I mean?
I'm digressing here but Stevíe's vocal prowess is still resplendent on studio cuts such as Sorcerer (the falsetto), It's Only Love, Planets Of The Universe (particularly the last section of the full version) and the Deep Dish version of Dreams, which I am convinced she did totally re-record (yes I know it's been teaked here and there, but she can still hit the high notes if she so chooses).
Further digression... why are so many Ledge members intent on Stevie singing in her higher register at all costs? Sure I would love her to reintroduce the falsetto in Dreams, Sorcerer and others on stage but more for contrast than anything else. I don't actually favour her somewhat strained higher register these days even though most do. For example, I think her SYW vocals on Running Through The Garden, Smile At You and Everybody Finds Out are impressively energetic but they do seem to have been produced under duress so, to my ears, sound forced and a tad grating. The other problem I have with these takes is that she doesn't vary the register - if she attempts to sing higher, she remains in that register for the duration of the song which creates the same problem as only singing in a lower register - the old "monotone" chestnut. All this makes one wonder what the supposed vocal coach, Steve Real, is actually contributing to proceedings. Why not ditch the technical (questionable) precision and reclaim the intensity/passion? Stevie needs to embrace her gentler side again - the tenderness of her vocals on It's Only Love, Goodbye Baby and the MSO Landslide warrant much praise. Also, before I duck for cover, whether you tolerate the song or not, recognition should be given to the relaxed, fluid vocal on Silver Girl. This delivery (not the song) actually reminds me of the Bella Donna days.
PS Is it just me or does Stevie's take on Rock 'N' Roll sound incredibly similar to I Need To Know?

Phil, your ear for vocals is so much better than mine and I see your point on all the songs you mentioned. Even Silver Girl! I've always thought part of what's ruining her more recent vocalizing is her damn projection. It's like she thinks the microphone is not carrying her voice, and she has to yell her songs out to the crowd. I blame the vocal coach. That's why I love Landslide on the old live album. Her voice is almost gone and she's just gives this lilting performance that absolutely captivates her audience to the very end. There's a second of total silence when she's finishes before the crowd begins to applaud. It gives me chills.
But I still don't hold much hope for Edge, she's just been doing it like this for too long.

I was in an FYE store yesterday just to see how they were displaying Crystal Visions. I was unable to find anything but Timespace. Stevie's name was up on the board behind the register as a new release, so I asked the girl working the register about it. She said, "Wow- is she coming to town or something? Everyone's been coming in here asking about her new CD! We're actually out of them right now." She asked if she could order one for me and I told her no - that I already had one, and that I was just a big fan and was curious.
Anyway, I thought that was so cool that at least here it seems to be selling well.

I don't think she sounded "off" as in missing notes, but I thought she sounded pretty lifeless on the track. The MSO definitely adds something to the performance.
I'm really jonesing on "Rock And Roll" though. Great addition to the set, though I would have wanted a killer live version of "Stand Back" AND "I Need To Know" on there. Hell, I'd even have taken the Blockbuster version of "Fall From Grace."

She shouldn't be afraid to sing a little softer, even if it means that her voice sounds raspier -- which is an aspect of her vocal performances that I LOVED and have missed since she started singing "like a female Jon Bon Jovi" (as per an old review in Entertainment Weekly).
I still love that vocal on the MSO version of "Edge" though. I don't know why -- I just do.

hi guys, finally got the package on thursday. had to buy it for euro 29.99 (at the only shop in amsterdam who could even order it for me)
I asked my friend to get it for me on amazon as a pre-order before but he had not yet come around to it and my patience had run out i know this was expensive but i needed to have it. Have been staying away from the ledge al together as to avoid any spoilers.
must say i love the package.
the cd :
I love rock 'n Roll (never heard the original so it was a new song to me, listened to the original Led Zeppelin version only yesterday for the first time, and that even reinforced my feeling that she did a great job on the cover)
I really dig the instrumentation on Landslide aswell and love on Edge the part where the orchestra really kicks in with those string arangements.
Wich one of the old songs were actualy remixed , cause i thought that sorcerer, if anyone falls and dreams deep dish mix at least sounded slightly difirent than the versions i'm used to , although haven't really compared the tracks with the other versions i have.
the dvd :
put it in before the cd actualy , and went straight to the bella donna footage.
I'm in love with the entire Blue lamp section and the fashion show is lots of fun too.
then i watched the video's and again with commentary straight after.
had already seen the commentary for IAFIL, sorcerer, SB (scarlett version) and EO17 online earlier.
liked her humor on the vid's

The irony is that a new Edge vocal was overdubbed in the studio for the Rock Rocks video release. Some of the original live vocal was used, maybe 40 seconds worth, strategically patched in with the new vocal. The MSO version, however, was the actual live vocal from that night.

Oh yes, definately. Her vocals on the 'Red Rocks' are blatently different from other nights on the tour that I've heard. During the RAL tour, Stevie's vocals were ragged, soaring, harsh, and full of a huskier vibrato. On the 'Red Rocks' video it sounds like she took a hit or two from a helium balloon.
RAL fan that I am, I have to admit the heresy of actually not owning the boot of the ORIGINAL vocals from the Red Rocks stop. Shame on me...

I don't mind the vocal. I mind that there is no orchestra until past the two minute mark. There are some dramatic moments from there on out in the arrangement, but they are few. The symphony on that song was used simply as filligree. Six gingerbread cutouts under the windows as opposed to working it into the framing and architecture. It could have underpinned the entire structure of the song and moved and grown to an enormous crescendo. God knows the song has the inherent drama and sonic space available. I don't think whoever arranged it was capable of doing it on that scale. Won't be listening to it much. Except for two or three distinct sections of the song it drives me nuts that the orchestra is sitting there essentially doing nothing.

I figured as much. There are a couple movements, if I can stretch the definition mightily, that work very well. But they were obvious and simple.
I mean, how hard is it to have the strings echo the guitar part once and then do it again in another verse a bit higher? There are also a few transitional elements and trills that hint at what might have been. What is really missing is an orchestral frame. It reminds me of a stage set for The Glass Menagerie that consists of a sofa, a chair, one table with two glass animals, and maybe a lamp. In essence, a post modern gesture as opposed to a fully realized vision.
I'm really feeling the metaphors today for some reason.

That would have been nice. At the very least they needed a string intro, and a prominent string presence throughout. One that swelled and receded (you nasty bitch I know what yer thinkin), and transitioned with the momentum of the song.
