(CBS) Stevie Nicks is one of the most respected and revered women in rock. As both a member of Fleetwood Mac and a solo artist, she is responsible for some of the most enduring songs of the last few decades.
Next week, the 58-year-old singer is releasing a retrospective album called "Crystal Visions - The Very Best of Stevie Nicks." She says can barely believe she has been in the music game this long.
"The fact that I've been able to still be here after all this time is — it blows my mind, and it makes me really think what a great audience I have because they've really stayed with me," she told Sunday Morning correspondent Rita Braver.
The album's title comes from how she sees many of her songs. They are her memories, she said.
"My memories then are my crystal visions because my songs — I always — think that my songs are from little visions," she said. "They are little visions that I dream up. And crystal — you know, crystal — looking through a crystal glass or a piece of crystal or a diamond or something."
Nicks was born in Phoenix and began seriously pursuing her music career in high school, when she met future long-time companion Lindsey Buckingham. After working as a duo, the two joined Fleetwood Mac, an already-established band. With the help of "Rhiannon," a song that featured Nicks' haunting vocals, the band reached new heights with its 1975 self-titled album.
Nicks has endured trouble with love and addiction and at one point vowed never to perform again. But she couldn't stay away from the stage, and is now embarking on another tour.
"For me, I will continue to do this for a long time," she said. "What else would I do, pretty much? This is what I love."
