man, I LOVE this job. a guy came in today with his lower left gold crown displaced. he swallowed it 4 days ago, waited for it to pass, dug through his poop and brought it in  so we sterilized it...and placed it back in his mouth

he's actually a normal guy, he just didn't want to have to pay $1,000 to have a new crown

his friends at work were calling him gold digger  and as soon as we recemented it, he was like..."hmm..this tastes like ****" I swear I've been laughing all damn day long..hehehe

anyway-my question is-would you dig through your **** for a crown that you KNEW was going back in your mouth(sterile of course)....to save a thousand bucks??

poll coming

Reading that made my LIFE!

dude,. you don't even know

I had it sitting on his tooth (not cemented) and I sat him up to take an x-ray. I told him not to move his tongue around too much or it will come out.

he said "what do you want me to do if it comes out?"

I said.."don't swallow it"

It's been the BEST day

"Are these fillings or are these fillings?!"

I can't believe that guy had the balls to:

a) admit to poo digging
b) put the tooth back in his mouth
c) had the nerve to wear a gold tooth in the first place

If I was that guy I would have sterilized it on my own...and would never ever tell a living soul what happened....wouldn't a nice "I lost the crown in a nectarine" suffice??

Anyway - GREAT story....your job is full of amusement!

I'd FIND a way to do it - just to save my embarassment.

Not that I'd do it. :p

Yeah, I'd find a way to clean it myself, and you guys would probably sterilize it anyway, before putting it back in, right?

Digging through my crap to save a thousand bucks? Probably yes. I'm not ashamed to admit it. There's a lot of things you can do with 1000 dollars. But the putting the tooth back in my own mouth part has me going... no way in hell. That is just gross, gross, gross. I would probably think about that every day for the rest of my life. How I have a tooth in my mouth that used to be inside my bowels. No way, Jose.

But it's poop money! If I did manage to work up the nerve to dig it out, I would have it melted down into something else. It would not be going back into my mouth. Ever.

"slightly used gold tooth, who needs a slightly used gold tooth?"

Why buy new when slightly digested will do?

point of the story?
Michelle is gross, disgusting and has a little brown spot on her ear.

I say by the end of today, someone will have that as their signature.

I'm going to have to be totally honest and say yes, yes I would to save 1,000 bucks. For me, it's like.. mouths are disgusting and infested with bacteria anyway. The thing was completely sterilized before it was put back in. So, in my mind, it's kind of like it's cleaner after he crapped it out and had it put back in than it was when it was just sitting in his mouth.

That's a thousand dollars, people. Sure, I'd be gagging while I was trying to retrieve it, but hey.. put some gloves on and get a coffee stir or something.. find the damn thing, pluck it out, and throw it in the sink, then in some alcohol. Ziplock that mother and take it in for proper cleaning and placement. No biggie. 2 minutes of queasy saved a G.

Now, a crown that someone else had crapped out? That's a bit of a different story. Some people have more disgusting crap than others.

Did you ask him if it hurt to pass?

ELIUD
03-20-2007, 01:52 PM
I'm with Sarah. A thousand bucks is too much to let sit in a pile of crap. But I wouldn't have f*ckin' bothered with retrieving the cell phone. No way.

Yeah, no way on the cell phone. The ONLY reason I would think about bothering with the cell was if my little mini SD card that holds all my pictures, videos, and music on it was plugged in. Then I might try to pull the phone out, pop out the card, and then toss the handset back in the crap.

Oh, and please do tell why gold is better than porcelain. And herrr I thought it was just a G thang.

alright...you asked for it

Gold (well, it's not ALL gold, obvioulsy) is the most bio compatible thing you can put in your mouth. It's the BEST thing you can put in your mouth. When you prepare the margin of the tooth for the crown, then go to seat the crown, you want a nice smooth transition. Not an "overhang" and you don't want it bulking out the side. Gold can be thinned to less than 1 mm and still be durable and strong. This is not the case for porcelain. They have to bulk it out to keep it from fracturing. So it makes it a tad bit harder to keep clean, and it can STILL fracture. Then...I think for this particular patient, he grinds his teeth. Metal wears evenly. So eventually, with his grinding patterns, he will wear a perforation in the top of the crown. Years down the road. Porcelain-it won't wear as nicely. it will again, fracture. Also gold is not as "porous" as porcelain, so it may be a bit smoother to the tongue  SO.... ooh...and it's not as if you don't have options. white gold or yellow gold

his was yellow

and hell yes I would  to save a grand?? I'd break out the **** strainer in a heartbeat.

and if this isn't the place for this story well then it shouldn't be told . . .

but here goes . . .

last summer at our annual fourth of july bash (come one come all) my friend, let's call her Michelle - yah Michelle was here with her husband and two kids age 5 and 3.

our house is up on a hill but most of the property (about 4 acres) is on a lower level by the river so we have an outhouse down there. (very state park like  )
well michelle is using the outhouse when she drops her CELL PHONE down down down down down the hole. about a five foot drop to the 'stuff' below.

Well it wasn't a $1,000 tooth but michelle decided to dig. I couldn't be anywhere near the outhouse while this was happening - i saw her walking toward the outhouse with a shovel and a hoe and made the mistake of asking what the hell whe was doing with my tools. she told me and was lookin for help. i instantly got in my kayak and went for a very LONG paddle contemplating the purchase of a new shovel and hoe.

When i got back i heard that she was just about to give up when she caught site of it - gross.
got my housemate to hold the hoe still while she used the shovel to get it on the hoe - grosser.
used gloves to peel off the plastic cover she had on the phone and then tested it by calling MY cell phone. GROSSEST.
f*ck - i wanted to throw MY phone out just cos she used hers to call me - lol

moral of the story?
none
point of the story?
Michelle is gross, disgusting and has a little brown spot on her ear.

(it really is a true story except for the name and the brown spot. )
