BTW... I couldn't remember what you call it when you can write with both.. I'm sure some bright spark will be along in a sec with the answer...

With the exception of playing instruments, my left hand is practically a useless appendage. A three year old can write better, than I can with my left hand!

Sarah

I write with my right hand, but I pick up stuff, etc. with my left. My right wrist is wayyyy weaker than my left and tires out easily. I wonder if I wasn't "supposed" to have been left handed sometimes. I've read many times that many more babies than most would think are born left handed, but routine teaching by routinely right-handed parents teaches a tendency to use the right hand, even if the left is the child's dominant.

Or something.

DrummerDeanna

I'm right-handed, though for drumming I, of course, use both quite well - but it was BITCH getting the left hand to catch up to and be as good as the right hand.

I still can't write with my left hand well...so for all intents and purposes I'm a righty.

In reality, I am right handed and good with my left. For instance, I shoot baskets better left handed and I can shoot pool left handed. Don't write that well, though. Even though I used to practice a lot as a kid. Obviously, right handed kids are dumb.

Oh, that's right, I forgot about my special handicap. Guess I really am amberdextrous.
Anyway, I can't move my hands separate from each other. I mean, they can't really do two different things at one time. I mean, shooting a basket or pool is two hands directed at one motion.

And then if I tried to get my legs involved doing even more things...well, I have no doubt disaster would ensue. Swear to god, that's why I had to quit band in highschool. Because you had to march, and I couldn't play and march. It's quite extroadinary considering my otherwise very high level of coordination. I'm like an idiot savant. Or just an idiot. Whatever, you should see me try to drum. Tragic. Actually me even trying to do the Gold n Braid dance is tragic.
That guy reminded me, I can use chopsticks left, too.

it's definitely hard to learn a stringed instrument. it's difficult to get one hand to do melody and the other to do rhythm. when i was younger, with violin i would concentrate on getting the rhythms down with my right hand before adding the left hand, and now i do that with guitar, too.

No, my left hand is a magnificent specimen, not unlike my right, except that it's like a strange mirror image of it. My left hand will kick in when my right hand has worn out, which at the current rate of wear, will be in about 250 years :D

Hmm...I'm mostly having trouble with the whole changing chords thing. Can't seem to do it in any sort of timely manner. Of course I'm also expecting to be great in like the space of an hour - a recipe for furstration...

I'm trying to take it slower now. And I'm looking for some drums to buy as my left hand becomes weaker and weaker the longer I don't play.

oh, chord changes. yeah. i practice those with a metronome, and first i set it to something really low, like 50 BPM or something. and i'll do C, C, G, G (or whatever chords you're practicing) with one chord per beat. and once i get it down at 50, i'll increase it just a little bit, to 54, then 58, etc etc. you don't need a metronome to do it, it's actually a lie to say i use mine, because it doesn't even have batteries right now. but i start out slowly, making sure i can do it at a steady beat before speeding up at all.

WTF?I can't imagine changing gears with the right hand. you engage the clutch with the left while changing gears with the right and accelerate with the right. the sides of my brain get confused thinking about it. for us gears and clutch are all left and in motion together, it makes more sense to my brain. Also most people are right handed so having the main driving hand being the left one is like them making baseball gloves for the right hand and leaving the left to do the throwing. itjust makes more sense in my head for the drivers seat to be on the right.

I'm a lefty though and got confused when I first went to school and tried to do it exactly like the teacher when she showed us how to write so I tried to do it that way.
