My brother got a sony Mini disc and he tried to tape a concert but nothing worked. I can't explain very much as I wasn't there but he says he followed the instructions in the book and the machine shows 100 minutes of footage and yet there is nothing taped. I am hoping to use it to tape the LB shows in Canada but I need to make sure that I understand how the thing works.

Hmmm, what kind of microphone has he got for it?

I haven't a clue, but if it says you've got something there - maybe you need to uncompress it or convert it or something...
Here's a FAQ page that might help.

This directly from the box
Sony HI MD Portable Recorder MZ - MTO
Durable Media
Hi- Med Disc 1.0 GB
Conventional Mini Disc 80 Min (305 MB)
High Quality Sound
Linear PCM - Live Recording
USB Upload of recorded content
Sonic Stage and Wav conversion function(for win)
Hi -MD - WAV Importer (For Mac)
The mircophone is a small one with phones at either end and cord that attaches. It kind of looks like a mini gaval.
I have never seen one before nor used one so sorry if my answers are not helpful. I just want top understand so that I can use it for the LB shows.

I think it depends on whether the mini disc recorder has a "line in" vs. a "mic" input. BIG difference. If it is a "line in" jack, the microphone will need some kind of a preamp/power source in order to be functional. Sony "mic" inputs are usually "hot," so they do not require a preamp/power source- the jack provides the power for the microphone.
