The Prince of Wales threw his weight into the debate about healthy eating today and told a nutritionist that the “key” was to ban McDonald’s fast food restaurants.
The controversial remarks were made as the Prince was in Abu Dhabi attending the launch of a public health awareness campaign aimed at fighting diabetes in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He visited the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre and watched as a group of children chose from a selection of “good” and “bad” snacks for their school packed lunches.
Talking to Nadine Tayara, a nutritionist from the centre who had put the children through their paces, he asked her: “Have you got anywhere with McDonald’s? Have you tried getting it banned? That’s the key.”
A McDonald’s spokeswoman said Charles’s remark was “disappointing”.
Other members of his family had visited the chain, she said, and “have probably got a more up-to-date picture of us.”
The spokeswoman added: “This appears to be an off-the-cuff remark, in our opinion. It does not reflect our menu or where we are as a business.”
Charles was clearly unaware of some of the moves the company has made, she said, such as improved labelling, supporting sustainable agriculture and nutritional changes with choice and variety.
In August 2005 Prince Harry popped into a McDonald's for a "buy one get one free" meal. He is reported to have bought two chicken burgers and a strawberry milkshake, eating the meal on the pavement outside.
His brother, Prince William, was pictured queuing up for a meal at McDonald’s in January 1992.
A Clarence House spokesman, travelling with the Prince and Duchess on their ten-day tour of the Gulf, later issued a statement.
It said: “The Prince of Wales has for a long time advocated the importance of a balanced diet, especially for children. In visiting the diabetes centre today, he was keen to emphasise the need for children to enjoy the widest variety of food and not to eat any particular sort of food to excess.”

And they felt the need to call up a McDonald's spokeswoman?
Newswriters are so stupid, I swear.

Srsly.
I don't think fast food is that bad. It becomes bad when you eat it, every day for every meal. Moderation is the key. Eating a Big Mac once a week isn't going to kill you or make you fat.

McDonald's doesn't need to be banned -- people just need to stop being whiny losers and start accepting personal responsibility. No one's shoving those burgers and fries into anyone's mouths... it's a choice whether or not we eat them.
Not to mention the fact that it's FAST FOOD and was never meant to be a staple of anyone's diet -- something that any common garden-variety idiot should know.
When I was a kid, we had McDonald's maybe once a month as a treat. Now people eat it like it's one of the four food groups.

Radio.
And no, I don't really have to deal with this kind of -who gives a crap about this story- crap.. but radio media does have its own kind of crap to deal with. Like the fact that everybody wants to kiss the newspaper's ass. Because, you know, they can totally update every hour and bring in breaking news with 3 minutes notice just like radio can. Right? Wronggggg. grumblegrumblecusscuss.
Sorry if you work in newspaper. I've done that too. It's just that.. I can honestly say it sucks and I hate it.

Nope, I'm in radio too :wavey: And thankfully, we don't have too much newspaper ass kissing. We're a pretty independent little operation, which I like.

We bought out our competition a few years back, so really, it's all been downhill since then. We act like we try to compete with the newspaper, but in my town, the people who own the newspaper own the bank. They sit on all the commissions and boards, and they've got the police and sheriff wrapped around their pinkies. I like it when they give the newspaper a pre-release so they can make their 11 AM printing deadline, but make us wait until 6 PM (after everybody gets home and reads the paper) to get full details. I stick in little jabs when I can. Dispatchers have pretty much learned to avoid the phrases "I don't know" and "I'm not sure". Like an armed robbery a few weeks ago. We knew it had happened.. radio stations in neighboring counties got BOLOs from their sheriff's department and told us. So, I call, and they're like, "Welllllll, we've got detectives on the scene, but I don't know anything else." So I'm like, "Well, do you know if it was a robbery?" "Wellll, I don't know"..click. My story? "Information from neighboring Sheriff's department in blahblah county says an armed robbery suspect wanted for holding up a local pharmacy..blahblahblahblah.. officials at the local sheriff's department said that they did not know if a robbery had actually taken place." LOL!!!!! bwaahahaha. heehee. ha. cough. The sad part is that they totally knew.. even the TBI was called.. they had a suspect description, car description, direction of travel, how much he'd taken, and the fact that the pharmacist herself actually shot at the suspect. And he wants to say he didn't know? F the po-leece.
It's a nice laid-back job most of the time, though, that's for sure. If you like to write at your own pace, it's for you, because newspaper is totally up-yr-butt kind of work. "Done yet?" "Done yet?" "Are you done yet?" "Can I have that yet?" "Is it done?" "I gotta have that by.."

Absolutely. I don't think people, even Prince Charles, should be slated for saying that certain things should be banned - he's entitled to his opinion, apparently. I think more stuff should be banned anyway, starting with everything I don't like :)

Not to mention, McDonald's specifically markets their menu structure at kids who come home to no parents in the more urban areas. Put it this way, what is the McDonald's in you area like between 3 and 6 in the afternnon. Every one I see has school kids in it and they have about $5.00 to spend, which is exactly where McDonald's menu is at.
In the end, there is nothing on the menu there that, when eaten every day, is in any way great for you. So, yes, eaten in moderation it is okay. But, when kids go there everyday essentially out of necessity, it is a bad thing.

True - but that is a bit of non-reality there. In many urban areas, you are dealing with a single mom who works two jobs and lives in govt. sub. housing. I think the vast majority of those mom's are trying their best, but they cannot be there when the kids get home. So, in a perfect world, yes it is bad parenting. But, in that scenario, which I have seen first hand, what else are they going to do?

I had not eaten it in awhile and I had a Big Mac and fries - I could not finish it and it kind of made me sick while eating it. WTF mate?I don't know exactly when I started, but for a long time, I would use the "thru" spelling. I knew it wasn't the correct spelling, of course, but I really liked the way it looked. So I used it.
Then Nancy (sodascouts) pointed out to me that she was surprised someone who loves the English language as much as I do, would continually use the incorrect spelling of something. So out of shame, I switched back to "through." :o

In a way, yes, in a way, no.
If they'd put healthy items on their $1 menu, then I'd say that they're making strides. But, when the cheapest "health-conscious" item on the menu is $3.99, that makes it prohibitive for people who can't afford anything more than whatever's on the $1 menu.
So, in their view, only people who are in the moderate & higher income & can be healthy, but poor people aren't worthy of healthy eating.

Me too. My second favorite sandwich, next to Arby's Beef and Cheddar.
When I worked at McD's, while in school, my I'd make my favorite QP......I'd use the tiny onions that are on the regular hamburgers and Big Macs. Of course that's against McD's rules(and NO rules are ever to be broken), so I'd only do it when the manager took a break! Damn I'm hungry now......

Can't you eat lean ground beef, or another lean red meat? Like, if your dinner was a nice venison steak, a great action packed salad? Or a hamburger made with the leanest, grass fed ground beef, lettuce and tomato and everything on it...with a salad? (I like salad). I also make great, tasty, healthful burritos with fake meat or lean ground beef. I guess the old saying is true, you have to want to do something. Honest to God, Amber, I admit I am exceedingly stubborn when it comes to this stuff. I'm usually a pretty level-headed, rational person -- but when it comes to eating right and exercising, my mind screams "PUNISHMENT!!!"
I look at all the people who say, "ohh, I'd love to have a Big Mac -- but I can't because I'm watching what I eat," or "I'm so hungry for bread right now, but it's not allowed on my diet," and I think "no freakin' way -- I'm eating what I want and when I want it."
Which I know is not really the right attitude.
Anyway, like I said, I know that it's my fault that I've gained weight. I also know what I need to do to lose it. I'm just not in the mindframe right now to want to.
And I still think McDonald's doesn't need to be banned. ;)

That's what I think almost all the time, too, and I kind of think in part it is the right attitude. The thing is wanting to eat different things. I don't eat things that are good for me that I don't like. Except, of course, for the unrefined Coconut Oil...
I mean, think about strawberries. Strawberries are SO GOOD, plus they're really good for you. Who wouldn't want to eat them? There is tons of food like that.
I'm lucky in that I like to exercise, and that I have to in order to get places ( ) but I still have to push myself to do it many times. And I eat like a poor white trash pig many times, as well. Last weekend most of my dietary intake was from the cheese and cracker and cookie groups. But I know that I also like to eat healthy food, so, you know, whatever.
And there is still overwhelming evidence that the entire natural world and humans would be way, way better off without McDonalds. ;)

None of those things has even close to the catastrophic affect on the environment, which is mainly what I was talking about. Human health is cool, but not really at the top of my concerns to a point. it makes sense to me, though you may talk about it like it is odd. Although making meth is really bad for the environment, too, so that is bad. To me it really isn't our god given choice to be able to go to McDonalds. Where is the choice of whatever lives in entire ecosystems that are destroyed, which incidentally, is the same ecosystem that supports us?
To me, the "choice" of being able to go to McDonalds has so little value, and does so much damage, that I simply wouldn't care if it was banned.

no processed foods. i buy just enough to eat 1500 cal/day. these days i spend more like $25/week because i got a raise at work. i don't buy really expensive stuff like cereal or bread, and the only prepackaged thing i buy these days are kashi trail mix granola bars. and occasionally i get morningstar fake chicken patties or black bean burgers, but those are expensive. usually i buy seven apples, enough romaine lettuce to make seven salads (and i don't buy the pre-cut mixes, either, just straight romaine), whole grain pasta (usually buy it when it's on sale, though, in larger quantities), eggs, soy milk, vanilla yogurt (one of the larger containers), almonds, etc. sometimes i buy extras like olive oil or coconut oil or seasonings, whenever i start running out, but that's not a weekly thing. $20/week is possible!

i'm going to respond to this and johnny stew's earlier post that he would starve:
that's not all i eat. i mean, jesus christ, what do you people expect? you asked how i eat on $20/week, and i told you. it's not that crazy, i've done it for months (aside from the entire month of february, but that's another story). i love food, i am totally an emotional eater (see february), but i decided to lose weight. in order to do that, you have to cut calories.
no, i don't eat cereal. it's expensive , especially if you want to get the kind that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup and a whole bunch of other processed crap that's bad for you. and i do! i eat eggs and yogurt for breakfast. maybe a couple almonds. grand total: 300 cals. then i have a salad. depending on what i put on it, that can be up to 150 cals. apple and peanut butter: 300 calories. whole wheat pasta and pasta sauce: 300 calories. almonds, dried cranberries, crackers (ok, i buy crackers): 300 calories. and at some point during the day i usually have a granola bar, which is 140 calories.
which brings me to a grand total of 1490 calories, and that, in addition to exercising every day, is how i have lost over 30 pounds.
if you want to lose weight cheaply, that's how you do it. if you don't want to lose weight, then fine! eat whatever the hell you want. and if you don't want to do it on $20 a week, then fine! but it can be done, and you asked, so i told you. i'm not crazy for not buying bread or cereal - that **** is high in carbs and calories. i'm looking to get the most out of my dollar and my calories.

Well, they can lose weight if the frozen selcetions reduce the caloric intake. In other words, if you eat three 300 calorie Lean Cuisines every day for a month, you will lose weight. The deal breaker there is that few people can sustain such a rigid plan and when they go back to real food, they likely will go way over the 1,000 or so calories a day and their body will horde the fat, etc.

Sheebus. Carrie will probably explain this, but it's not that tough. A few eggs for breakfast (toss in a few veggies and crushed garlic to spice em up), plus a good granola bar, or fruit, plus a bunch of water with the coffee or tea is plenty of breakfast. You can put a bunch of crap in a salad - tomatoes, black beans, chick peas, carrots, olives, some cheese, sunflower seeds, chunks of chicken, etc. Also, those fake chicken patties, with a big assed bowl of steamed vegetables and about 16 ounces of water oughta keep anyone's trap shut for 3-4 hours.
This stuff isn't impossible. About the best lunch I have is half a can of black beans with salsa and garlic tossed in, plus a tuna sandwich. Tuna has fat free mayo and spices in it. ****loads of protein, about 400 calories. I'm stuffed for 3 hours easy. I drink at least 2 glasses of water so the whole mess swells up and I am totally full. It's delicious. About my favorite meal ever.
I suspect I am wasting my breath, but I'm not trying to be hostile. I hear this crap from friends and family all the time about essentially not wanting to be deprived of their salt and grease and starch. As if those are food groups. I mean, I love my pizza and french fries as much as anyone. I just don't want to be a big fat assed 40 year old guy with a beer belly. I don't wanna live in that body and god knows no one is gonna want to see it naked. Can't have both. It's ultimately kind of funny, I suppose. Like I told my sister, "Eat all you want, whenever you want, just shut up about how fat you are already. And quit making fun of me for going to the gym or I won't send you a get well card when you have a heart attack."
Of course she told me to fukc off, then we laughed.:blob1:

As far as McDonald's goes, of course it's **** food. Most people know that.
Not everyone does, but most. But if people wanna slurp trash down their gullets they're gonna. If they couldn't get McD's they'd go home and make fried chicken. What all that strip farming for those infernal "future burger" cows in Central and South America is doing to the planet is another ugly story entirely.

Great point. it can't cost that much more to make a grilled chicken sandwich than a double cheeseburger.
You make an excellent point, Steve.
Although it must be said that "health food" is, in general, more expensive than less healthy food.
That doesn't make it right, of course, but it's not something that's exclusive to McDonald's.
Bull****. Fresh fruits & veggies, lean meats, pasta (even the whole grain kind) etc. are way cheaper per serving than convenience foods, snack foods, and ready made stuff.
And if you want fast and healthy, go to Subway - made fresh, much healthier for the most part. Right now it's $3.99 for a 6 inch sub, a small bag of chips and a pop. So get a turkey with tons of veggies, mustard instead of mayo, a bag of baked chips & a diet pop. Same price (actually, a bit cheaper, if I recall) than most McD's valu meals.
I always take the onions out. I don't ask for "no onions" though because I like the ghost flavor of the onions, without the actual onions
I like McDonalds..I won't hide it anymore, once in a while it's a nice treat, their fries are, by far, my favorite.
Burger King is ok...but McD's is my preferred bad food...I'm sure nostalgia plays some part in that.
Haha! Ghost flavor. I do the same thing.
absolutely.
the idea that healthy food is expensive is ridiculous. if you don't buy food that's prepackaged, preportioned, and processed, you can eat cheaply and healthfully.
well, naturally those specific diets are going to be more expensive. you should go on the "carrie eats healthy for $20/week" diet. i'm serious, it works.
Yeah! :p
....I actually don't know anyone who eats "twigs", and I like berries a lot.
One of the Kashi cereals lists "twigs" as one of the ingredients, I swear to God. :D Obviously, they're not really twigs (I don't think) but they look like it & they're crunchy. It's damn good too.
You don't buy cereal or bread??? What are you eating for breakfast? A granola bar? I'd pass out before 10am if that's all I had! Seriously, if all I had to eat in a day was a granola bar, a salad, and a fake chicken patty, I would not be able to function. And I'd probably be fired from my job because I strangled the first person who tried to talk to me.
Sheebus. Carrie will probably explain this, but it's not that tough. A few eggs for breakfast (toss in a few veggies ans crushed garlic to spice em up), plus a good granola bar, or fruit, plus a bunch of water with the coffee or tea is plenty of breakfast.
I mean, I love my pizza and french fires as much as anyone.
She cool like dat.
I think Supersize Me shoulda been called, "Take your golden arches and dig your grave."
The biggest change (and improvement) in my diet was to ditch most carbs in the morning. I credit Amber with reminding me that I probably wasn't getting enough protein in the am, and that's why I was hungry again within an hour or two. If I do have a carb/bread product, it's "light" or "high fiber" or fortified with protien.
I used to have a bowl of raisin bran - high in fiber, but way too much sugar & simple starch. Now I'll have a Weight Watchers bagel with a bit of peanut butter, or my own "Egg McMuffin" - a light Eng. muffin, 3 egg whites (they're equal to 1 whole egg as far as calories go) a slice of 2% cheese & a slice of ham if I have some handy. Same amount of calories (or a bit less) than before, but I'm not hungry for at least 3 or 4 hours.
BTW - I think everyone loves French fires, they're so much cozier than American ones.

Just a random note - A lot of people have a wheat allergy and don't know it, also the gluten in wheat isn't really cool to digest, it's problematic. I notice people think "whole wheat" things are good - they probably aren't. I don't have the scientific info at my fingertips, but i can get it. And essentially it rarely has much more fiber than white bread, and the nutrients are still stripped by processing. Yes, we all grew up thinking "whole wheat" was a great idea. No.
I buy sprouted grain bread. It's very healthy. The brand I buy is Ezekial bread. $2.50/loaf. More scientific info about sprouted grain bread, again not right at my fingertips. I can say without consulting my research that it has more fiber and protein and nutrients, and less cals. Oh, and wait, I think it just went up to 2.99/loaf. Still.

I've lost 8 lbs on my own "starvation diet". I can go most of the day without eating(okay, it should be noted that I'm a vampire, and get up about 1PM, and don't go to bed til about 5AM). If I must have something before dinner(about 7-8PM), I'll the the above mentioned "one slice sandwich". One slice of Aldi's Oat Bran bread, with some turkey ham, and yes, the smallest amount of mayo that I can convince myself to put on there.
For dinner, I've been alternating between healthy one night(ex-chicken, veggies and rice), and something I WANT to eat, the next night(watching the portion, though!). And I've been okay with this, so far.
The HARDEST part is not eating anything late night. Oh Gawd I can't tell you how hard that is!!! I've got some peanuts here, so I'll have like TEN peanuts, just to feel SOMETHING in my stomach!

and i'm not big on fries unless they're ultra golden brown & crispy, coated, or curly fries.
i'm big on the starvation diet, too, but mainly because nothing ever appeals to me anymore. blah.

I don't eat a lot of snack foods. I might have some Snyder's BBQ chips on occasion (the ONLY potato chips that are worth eating, but they're only sold around here). I might have some chocolate chip cookies once in a while, too.
But it's not typical for me to eat a lot of those kinds of things. In fact, when I want a little snack, I usually reach for pretzels or sunflower seeds, believe it or not.
I do, however, eat greasy pepperoni pizza. I eat fried chicken. I eat meatloaf and lasagna and bacon-wrapped steaks and tacos. And so on.
And, yeah, I know there's a healthier way to make most of those things -- but I haven't found a healthier way to prepare them that tastes the way my mother cooks, or the way my grandmother used to.
I'm glad others can do it. Honestly. And more power to you.
Myself, I prefer the taste of the bad-for-you stuff. Fried. Fatty. Greasy. That **** tastes GOOD... which is why even the most health-conscious person craves it. I've never met a person who craves rice cakes.
Mind you, I don't complain about gaining weight. I acknowledge that I have, and I acknowledge the fact that it would, obviously, be healthier for me to lose it. I also acknowledge that I do feel better when I weigh about 20lbs less than I am now. (Ironically, when I was younger, I was ultra-skinny no matter what I ate -- to the point that people commented on it ALL the time. But I've turned a corner with my metabolism.)
Life is so short, and I already don't smoke, do drugs, drink alcohol excessively, or sleep around... so I've got to have some fun, right? ;)

Wait, I don't think anyone told you to diet, did they? Did I miss something? I thought one of the discussions here was that McD's is cheap & easy, and that you said healthy foods are more expensive, so it's harder to eat well. Bacon wrapped steaks are cheaper than chicken? Lasagna is cheaper than pasta with veggies? Pretzels and chips are cheaper than fruit?
I'm not trying to harp on you, Stew. I eat all of the things you've mentioned, but either not as often as I used to, or in a smaller portion, or made healthier. I don't think anyone can completely eliminate these types of food from their diet. But to say that healthy food is too expensive is just a copout. If you want to eat this way, go for it. But don't turn around & say "but it's so affordable!"

Lasagna is cheaper than pasta with veggies? Pretzels and chips are cheaper than fruit? You might have missed it, but I explained that my "healthy foods are more expensive" comment was in reference to the "easy" half of "cheap & easy." if you don't have a lot of time (or the ability) to cook, buying the "easy" foods is definitely more expensive than the less healthy alternatives.
And, no, bacon-wrapped steaks aren't cheaper than chicken, but I also mentioned that I'm not fond enough of chicken to want to eat it more than once a week. If that often.
Of course, I don't eat those steaks more than once a week either. Hell, not even more than twice a month. But they're among the "unhealthy" things I love to eat.
I'm not trying to harp on you, Stew. I eat all of the things you've mentioned, but either not as often as I used to, or in a smaller portion, or made healthier. But don't turn around & say "but it's so affordable!"If anyone thought that I said I eat the way that I do because I can't afford to eat healthier, that wasn't the impression I meant to give.
That comment was in regards to chiliD's mention that the healthier foods on McDonald's menu are more expensive than the unhealthy ones, and I was only adding that the healthier "EASY" foods are always more expensive.
I have cut down on the size of my portions, and I've also eliminated my "midnight snack" -- but so far, after four weeks, I haven't seen any changes. Now that the weather is getting better, I'll start walking again. Maybe that'll help.
Beyond that, I'm not busting my balls to be fit and thin.

In the time that it takes to drive to McD's, order the burger, pay for it, check your order to be sure they didn't F it up & drive back home, you could throw a 93% lean patty on the George Forman grill, slap it on a bun, toss on some cheese & you're done. I wonder if Home Ec classes should start teaching children where to find healthy, quick and inexpensive alternatives to fast food.
There are some things (right from wrong, for example) that parents should be teaching their kids, but when it comes to eating healthy, some parents are completely in the dark.

Or is some of it just a youth thing? I remember in high school ALL my friends ate horribly. I was never taught nutrition, some were and still ate crap.
And now I live across from a high school, everday when I leave for work they're coming and going from lunch - and pretty much everyone has either Burger King...a BIG bag of chips or some sort and a huge soda...candy as well. I mean all of them. I'm sure not all their parents are idiots - and I'm sure some of them know it's bad - but it's a youth thing maybe?

^ I think so Dee, but I also think it's the way they're being raised. Look at you & I - we ate at McD's regularly, my fam used to order pizza once a week on top of that, plus snacks, junk food, etc. It wasn't all bad, it's not like we never ate vegetables, but I'm sure we ate crap a lot more than was healthy. And now we're paying for it, I know I've had to literally change the way I eat -and it was NOT easy. Then look at Amber, whose parents did not go the fast food route & focussed more on healthy eating according to her. Things that were common sense to her were not to me as a kid, not until I got older & did research & learned more.
So, yeah I think kids are going to eat more crappily in general. But a kid brought up in a house that has McD's once a week, pizza once a week, Chinese once a week, KFC once a week, doesn't make their own lunch, drinks pop by the gallon, etc. is already automatically at a disadvantage - because they don't know any better. This is how they think it is supposed to be.
BTW - in junior year of high school, I went to BK every.single.day. at lunch & ate a bacon double cheeseburger, large fry & a DIET Coke. I look back on that & pray my heart will forgive me. :o

Excellent points...makes sense, as the friends I do have that were raised in better food homes definitely have it easier now.
You mentioned pizza once a week - that's also a carry-over from my upbringing. EVERY Friday I get a wicked craving for pizza because that was always pizza day growing up. So I have to actually stop myself from gettin a pizza every week...I still do once in a while...because, well, I love pizza.
Anyway, I've also had to learn about all this stuff as an adult - it definitely put me at a disadvantage. Can't argue that!
In high school I would eat Reese's Peanut Butter Cups every day, along with a (real)coke or two and lunch would be either a Sonic Burger or Pizza..unless we went off campus, then it was McD's. If I ate like that now I'd be a blimp.

^I sympathise on the pizza., my fam was the same way. Of course I'm not going to stop ordering pizza entirely, but I'm not going to have it every week either, esp. if I've already gone out to dinner that week, or had Wendy's for lunch, or KFC. Man, I haven't had KFC in about a year. Mmmmmmmmm......

Exactly. I usually do one "treat" meal during the week, which means something bad - pizza or burger or something. The rest of the week I make my foods fresh...it's funny I've been craving KFC lately too - but I refuse to eat there  My sister keeps telling me just to get some fried chicken at the grocery store or something, but it's not the same...oh well.

And it's NOT the same. KFC is the best. And it MUST be Original Recipe.
I think I know your taste buds pretty well, Dee......I'll bet you're an Extra Crispy girl.
I'm eating a fukcing salad now, cuz I'm playing music tonight(and my diet too, of course).

After she passed away, Friday became our Pizza Day.

Very well could be true.
I suspect though, that everytime an Italian dies of an arteriosclerosis related heart attack or has gastric bypass, the baby jesus soils his swaddling clothes.
Damn, hasn't that infant been through enough?

Folks who diet and exercise still die every day, too. Plane crashes. Car accidents. Cancer. Aneurysms. Fat people strangling them to death.
I'll take my chances with my pizza. :D

 Stewey says "stop being whiny losers". I'm writing this down! :blob1: ;)
I do eat fast food once in a while. I agree that banning it isn't the answer. I mean seriously, are they going to have to have a french fry black market?

McDonald's tests a bigger burger, report says
Fast-food chain trying out a high-end, one-third of a pound Angus beef burger priced at $3.99, according to newspaper.
March 7 2007: 1:51 PM EST
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Fast-food chain McDonald's is testing a bigger high-end Angus burger that costs a little bit more for the extra weight, according to a published report Wednesday.
The Chicago Tribune said the new Third Pounder is currently available only in about 600 restaurant locations in Southern California. At one-third of a pound, the burger is the biggest on the McDonald's (Charts) menu at outlets where it is being tested.
It is also the most expensive sandwich, priced at $3.99, the paper said.
America's most admired companies
The paper quoted McDonald's franchise owner Scott Frisbie as saying that he approached the company about two years ago with the idea that the McDonald's menu needed a premium burger to remain competitive.
Developed by McDonald's executive chef Dan Coudreaut, the burger comes on a denser bun, which Frisbie said has more of a "roll flavor," the report said.
"The initial reaction has been overwhelmingly positive," said Frisbie, who helped conduct the initial tests of the burger during the past four months at two of his family's 17 franchises in the Anaheim area. "The sales really surprised us," he told the paper.
McDonald's traditionally has been cautious about adding new menu items. In recent years the company has introduced chicken snack wraps and salads to its menu.
Meanwhile, its competitors have also added Angus burgers to their menus. Burger King (Charts) added the $3.99 Angus Steak Burger to its menu in 2004. Carl's Jr. and Hardee's, which are both owned by CKE Restaurants Inc (Charts)., offer as many as eight variations of an Angus burger priced as high as $6.
Hardee's added the burgers, which are known as Thickburgers, in 2003. Carl's Jr. added the Angus burger to its menu in 2004, the report said.
The report said that the new sandwich comes in three versions: a deluxe with American cheese, tomato slices, lettuce, red onion strips and pickles; a mushroom and Swiss cheese; and a bacon and American cheese.
Only the double Quarter Pounder with cheese compares to the calorie count of the new burgers. The Angus Third Pounder ranges from 720 calories to 860 calories, while the double Quarter Pounder contains 740 calories. McDonald's signature sandwich, the Big Mac, is 540 calories, the report said.
