So you're saying that there is/was/still going on, an initial wrong? Just curious...
I believe Brian's point is (and he can correct me if I'm wrong) that there were about 5 or 6 of you that perceived there to be an initial wrong who then decided to become part of the problem (as these people saw it) rather than just move on. I guess it was revenge or some sort of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" mentality.
For the record, I've found all of this to be very interesting and have already commented to the other mods that all of this would make quite a psychology thesis.

damn I must be stupid or naive or both cause I really thought all the new threads were making fun of the threadmakers themselves and/or to get some activity on the board.
I never really looked at it as "making fun" or anything like that. I think some people may want to assume that, but as Lisa stated in another thread, we know what assuming does...

Well, I suppose none of us know for sure, only the threadmakers. But there's a difference between an assumption and an educated guess. It would be quite the coincidence if the events as of late just happened to all occur at the same time. But I suppose it's possible.

Again, there's a difference between an educated guess and an assumption. Also, there may have been some things that happened that you may not know about. I don't mean that in an "I-know-better-than-you" sort of way, it's just there's plenty the moderators do that we don't advertise.
"Every chance we get," huh? I'm sorry you feel that way. Really. Fact of the matter is that the mods have intervened very little with regard to recent events. Maybe these threads have been "lighthearted," but obviously there's some folks, and not just mods, who haven't seen things that way. However, no one has been called to task on them. I entered the conversation because I'd rather we all get our cards out on the table than "assume" anything.

If you don't like the thread topic or think it's stupid, then ignore it & let it sink to the bottom (although it could very well be "revived" again a week later, so that may not work.) I think the moderators are doing a fairly good job of balancing things around here- despite the perception that some squeaky wheels are getting the grease.
The thing I find interesting is that in the five years I've participated in this forum, I've never felt the urge to "report a post" to a moderator. Even some of things that 1/2 Insane said. I mean, the whole idea of "reporting" a post seems so grade school to me- other than something like a porn link or something like that. If I feel offense or concern about a post, I either address the person who posted it or ignore them.

This was always my opinion with regard to Ethan when some folks seemed to be trying to bully him into not posting/creating threads. For Chrissakes, it's not like anyone ever said that everyone has to respond to his threads and hang on his every word! Hell, I almost never respond to his threads. It doesn't mean it's OK to make sport of him. A little perspective, folks.

It wasn't any one person's threads that raised my eyebrow (why oh why did Marty get rid of that smiley!) nor was it just the "official" threads. But all at once there seemed to be an awful lot of (IMHO) pointless, inane, stupid threads quickly on the heels of the latest Ethan brouhaha. It certainly seemed suspect to me, but if everyone is going to go all  on me, then...whatever. It's not like it made me mad. I thought it was funny, a little sad, but ultimately it was just silliness.
I think the moderators are doing a fairly good job of balancing things around here- despite the perception that some squeaky wheels are getting the grease.

Thanks. I appreciate that. :xoxo:
Interestingly, I think the anti-Ethan vibe has been curbed not so much by the actions of the moderators, but because of regular board members who have stood up and said something when he/she thought Ethan was being treated unfairly.
Ultimately, I think Kate said it best: "It's just the Internet, people."

I don't like cliqueyness, but it doesn't surprise me one bit considering the way things have been (IMO) going downhill around here lately.
I have been thinking about that a lot lately, but didn't really want to mention it. I don't post that much compared to a lot of people, so in a way it sometimes makes me feel like what I think doesn't matter. Sometimes lately if feels like I'm just finding threads and threads of what really are, or maybe should be PM's. I feel like I'm interrupting conversations. I agree with what the mods are saying about the "official" threads and I'd add the polls too. You can say it's assumption, but some assumptions are correct, aren't they? It seems pretty obvious that all of the official threads and polls poped up in response to one paticular users most likely innocent, albeit excessive and repetative posts. There's a huge difference between someone being a little overzealous and others doing the same thing purpously to make a point.
People can say "well, just don't read the thread if you don't like it", and for the most part I don't, but sometimes some good conversations come out of bad threads.
It does seem like many familiar names have faded away recently, and maybe the direction things are taking is part of the reason? I guess these kind of things happen in waves though. Perhaps it's due to somewhat of a lack of activity with the band, but then again Lindsey and Stevie are both on the road, so who knows. Winter boredom?

but i thought the whole point of this ado was that if someone doesn't like Big E's posts and threads that they should ignore them. everyone finds stuff on here that they don't jibe with and so - big deal - they don't check that thread out -
some folks may find your "lindsey lindsey lindsey' thread to be - uh - how you say "overmature" - others, like me, may have laughed their ass off while reading through it. others still may ignore it all togethr. but eithr way -
healthy debate sometimes gets trumped by prior incidents that may be the result of limited inflection and lack of body cues that is internet communication - which leads to a bunch of assuming as to what others mean - a mine field to say the least. god i don't know if that made sense. I responded to the question this thread posed...but a thank you for assembling thoughts on my posts.

that calling someone's threads or posts by a name such as 'immature' seems to be how we got in this sticky wicket in the first place
More like the repeated labeling of not only someone's posts, but that person, as immature, a troll, complete with demands to "stop posting," and "go away."

I believe the thread question was related to recent threads posted and I expressed my opinion of them. No sticky wicket here and I certainly do not feel attacked. But there's ONE subject that we're all AFRAID to even mention.:distress:If that subject is Ethan and the amount of threads & polls he posts... and from things you've intimated in this and other threads, I believe that to be the case... then I don't understand how you feel people aren't "allowed" or are "afraid" to discuss it.
It's been brought up numerous times over the past several months. The mods have also addressed the issue countless times, both publicly and privately. We've also asked Ethan to kindly tone things down a little -- which he has -- but we're certainly not going to tell him he can no longer start threads or polls.
The guy hasn't done anything wrong... he hasn't gotten into one single argument or ever once broken or even bent one of our rules/guidelines. The only thing he's "guilty" of is unintentionally annoying some people... and, hell, we've ALL done that.
You so often grouse about your disdain for "censorship"... well, guess what, telling Ethan to stop creating threads and polls is censoring him.
I've said it before, and apparently I have to say it again -- if there is anyone who is annoyed by Ethan or anyone else, then ignore them. Not interested in a topic? -- don't read it. Don't care for a certain Ledgie? -- don't bother to open the threads they create.
It might be difficult to ignore people in the "real world," but on a message board it's as easy as breathing. And I think everyone here knows how to do that.
Lastly, if our rules and guidelines are too strict for anyone, or if they're not strict enough, I'd like to suggest a few options. They're all nice places and are filled with interesting, knowledgeable Mac fans -- though I believe that each has its own set of rules and guidelines....

I believe Brian's point is (and he can correct me if I'm wrong) that there were about 5 or 6 of you that perceived there to be an initial wrong who then decided to become part of the problem (as these people saw it) rather than just move on.That's exactly what I meant.

Thanks. It's from the November 5, 1999 Entertainment Weekly. I love charactures ever since, as children, my bro and I had them done...I am amazed at the perceptions and talent of the artists.

People have started threads called the "official" whatever thread since I've been posting here. I just assumed that a few people got silly and had some fun making "official" threads. I don't see what any of it has to do with Ethan.
Since everyone keeps talking about Ethan though, I have been a big defender of him but he does go overboard with the threads. For example, why did he start a thread to post his Carrie song when he already has a thread about his Carrie song. It's annoying and it buries other threads. When I want to post about Dolly Parton, I dig up my Dolly Parton thread from November of last year.
Being a moderator is difficult, and I appreciate you all. But the big defense of Ethan while taking a few swipes in this thread at people having some silly fun on a chitty-chat board doesn't seem very fair.

I didn't, necessarily- it was assumed. Although Sweet Sugah Sue says it was an educated guess.

It doesn't.
This is why I live in a gay ghetto. When I go to the supermarket in my neighborhood, I never encounter the irritants that I would otherwise encounter in, say maybe, a Rebublican stronghold suburb.

But the big defense of Ethan while taking a few swipes in this thread at people having some silly fun on a chitty-chat board doesn't seem very fair.I probably should just follow Sue's cue and drop it, but I want to say that while some of the recent threads were just an example of "silly fun," there were others that were most definitely meant with a different intention.
The mods' comments in this thread were in regards to the latter, and we were not "taking swipes" at the people who meant their threads in a lighthearted manner.

o.k. so I sat and read (most of) this entire thread. Since we are talking about "official" and mine were "certified" I feel I don't fall into this thread. But what the hell. Both of my threads were actual threads, I just threw "certified" on there to make fun of carrie  And I know for a pretty hard fact that carrie DIDN'T start the initial official thread to make fun of ethan-as she stated. Mostly because I thought that too, and asked her  and nope.
And I think from that point on, it was just a fad. Oh...let's think of every possible thread we can and slap "official" on it. Kind of like the "what are you eating, drinking, seeing, typing, hearing, condioning your hair with, pooping, peeing, scratching, pissed off at, wearing, working on, knitting, excersing to" threads. IMO those kinda got out of hand, but no one seemed to mention anything about that.
I'm not even going to get into the ethan debate. I have my own opinions and I will either keep them to myself, or pm a moderator in the near future.
To close. someone mentioned the problem with cliques. and while I have to agree somewhat, i don't think that will ever change. Sometimes I feel "cliquey" and sometimes I feel so out of the loop I wonder what I'm even doing here  So I don't think that should keep you from posting just because people are in the middle of a "conversation". It's in the chit-chat. That's what it's there for. I've said plenty that got ignored and I just truck along. Sometimes it hurts my feelings, sometimes not  I had to learn that the hard way.
oh god - i am such a dunce -
don't delete it. I fell for it too, and as soon as I finished reading this thread I was gonna go check :o
That was very funny and worth reading through this painful thread.
I have no problem with the official threads or the unofficial threads.
thank you darlin' :xoxo:
HA!

I fell for it too,
As did I...in fact I wasted quite a bit of time this morning trying to find the new guidelines. Oh well, I'm always falling for that kind of thing.
